I have a question – John Edwards “suspended his campaign” – having never heard of that I’d love to know what that means, exactly. Dare I hope he could jump back in or somethin’ ?

Nahant is a small town on the north shore near Boston. It is only connected to the mainland by a causeway. I spent much of my youth there in the summers until my parents built a permanent home there in 63. My parents,sister and my father family are buried there overlooking the Atlantic. There are two aspects to this-

One is that Edwards theoretically retains delegates pledged to him on the first ballot. I’m not sure if these are legally required to support him, or can be released.

The second is that he has borrowed against his public matching funds that are supposed to be released once the FEC acquires a quorum. Apparently he needs to stay in the race to meet certain deadlines to obtain full funding. I suspect he needs to remain “in the race” until the end of March (first quarter) and make the necessary legal disclosure requirements.

Now some additional stuff, once Edwards pays off whatever campaign debts he has accrued (or perhaps beforehand) any additional moneys can be donated to political campaigns of his choice. I suspect he’ll be helping out various progressives in their primaries and General election campaigns. At least that would be the most appropriate use of the moneys, IMO. He can’t use the money for any non-electoral purposes (other than legal defense funds that relate to campaign issues…which shouldn’t arise). He could donate it to the Presidential nominee, but these would likely be getting loads of cash.

Or he could simply bank it for use in a future campaign.

“R”s recognize Mitt is a plastic cut-out who will move to the right on issue after issue, in other words, on demand. Plus, he’s handsome (that always helps), he’s young and vital (that helps), he’s got money (that always helps) and he has no skeletons, no scandal, just a reasonable amount of exaggeration when it comes to his record, and (that can be argued, which is expected.)

“R”s do not want McCain even though he holds far more crossover appeal. Their banking that they can “Sell Romney” to overcome the difference and they don’t care he used to be a lefty because he’s convincingly a righty now.

McCain is a maverick. That means he’ll do the deciding.

I still worry Cheney’s gonna step down as vp, and whoever the old line GOP wants to be the next prez will get appointed as vp, making it easier to run for prez.

What I can’t figure out is, who do the repubican “powers that be” want?

Last thread someone suggested that Reid bring up McCain’s immigration bill at some point in the future. It’s drive the right-wingers absolutely apoplectic. I thought that the most useful point would be just before McCain was getting close to winning the nomination. It would pull the wooden stake out of Mitt’s campaign and sour the Republican immigration nativists on him just as he’s about to be coronated. Might drag on the race for another month and lend hope to Romney…so we’d either end up with a flip-flopping McCain, or a frothing Romney who’s Dad was born in Mexico to Mormon fugitives from the polygamy laws.

If I had an “R” vote to throw away, I would throw it to the Romneybot. Reason: McCain scares me more…he is clearly the “war” candidate, yet he has the ability to attract votes from independents because of this myth that he is a “maverick”–they overlook all the times he has voted the way Bush wanted him to. He would probably draw a lot of votes because of his record as a “war hero” and POW–the argument that he is best prepared to be commander in chief, compared to Obama and Clinton who have no military service. Romneybot, on the other hand, I think would be easier to beat–he’s a flip-flopper and you can’t believe anything he says; he made himself enormously wealthy by buying companies and laying off employees to cut costs; he belongs to a religion that many “Christians” do not believe to be “Christian,” and because they have begun talking about McCain as the “front-runner” since the Florida results came in, I see it as advantageous to keep Romneybot in the race, hammering away at McCain until perhaps the time of the R convention, and perhaps overtaking him (which I see as good for the aforementioned reasons). Thus, whichever of them ended up being nominated, the memories of their negative campaigning against each other would be fresh in the minds of the voters in November.

I’m not saying I have thought all this through, it’s just how I feel at this moment in the campaign.

When the GOP catches a cold, everybody at Fox News is ailing. No wonder its ratings are in the pits.

… Bottom line is that Fox News is in for a very rough 2008. And the umbrella reason for that is quite simple: Eight years ago the all-news cable channel went all-in on the presidency of George W. Bush and became a broadcast partner with the White House. Proof of that was on display Sunday night, Jan. 27, during Fox News’ prime-time “Fighting to the Finish,” a “historic documentary” on the final year of Bush’s presidency. Filmed in HD and featuring “unprecedented access,” according to the Fox News press release, the show was pure propaganda. (I must have missed Fox News’ “Fighting to the Finish” special back in 2000, chronicling the conclusion of President Bill Clinton’s second term and his “extraordinarily consequential tenure.”)

The point is that Fox News years ago made an obvious decision to appeal almost exclusively to Republican viewers. The good news then for Fox News was that it succeeded. The bad news now for Fox News is that it succeeded.

Meaning, when the GOP catches a cold, everybody at Fox News gets sick. As blogger Logan Murphy put it at Crooks and Liars, “Watching FOX News getting their comeuppance has been fun to watch. They made their bed, now they’re having to lie in it and it’s not too comfortable.”

Surprise image from Mercury Messenger

The Messenger spacecraft that sped past Mercury on Jan. 14 sent back pictures of a geological formation never seen before in the solar system: a central depression with more than 100 narrow troughs radiating out from it.

Called “The Spider” by scientists analyzing the trove of images and data coming back from Messenger, the puzzling feature is the kind of surprise that researchers live for.

“Messenger has sent back data near perfectly, and some of it confirms earlier understandings, and some of it tells us something brand-new,” said principal investigator Sean C. Solomon. “The Spider is definitely in the category of something we never imagined we’d find.”

It has to do with matters of scale. Sure, it took leveraging America’s most brutal and heartbreaking tragedy in a generation to pull it off, but does the fact the administration exploited 9/11 like a pedophile exploits a child take anything away from the astonishing depth of the abuse?
