Look at it this way – both GOP frontrunners are now madly promising “teh base” to do everything their way (nuke illegal immigrants and 5 or more furren countries, death penalty for masturbation…), but both are completely insincere, and will put on their JATO packs to try to get back within a parsec of “center” for the general. So the base will stay home in droves. Just look at the D vs R primary participation numbers – head to head, the R’s have been competing for 4th place. McCain is more viable than Romney among independents, but independents can’t win an election by themselves.
