Quick reminder to everyone: keep those calls and FAXes coming to your Senators. Tell them to stand up for the rule of law and for the balance of powers between Congress and the executive branch -- and to vote NO on Sen. McConnell's cloture motion today.
Glenn has background on why this is important -- and the games the Bush Administration is playing (and on how gullible Mike Allen is with an utter failure to fact check):
...The administration explicitly admits that the President won't allow an extension because he wants to repeat the success of last August -- when Congressional Democrats capitulated to every Bush demand because they were told they had to act within a matter of days, i.e., before their recess, lest they cause us all to be killed by The Terrorists. "They need the heat of the current law lapsing to get this done," said a senior administration official, courteously granted anonymity by The Politico's Allen to issue these threats.
This veto threat is one of the President's most brazen acts ever, so nakedly exposing the fun and games he routinely plays with National Security Threats. After sending Mike McConnell out last August to warn that we will all die without the PAA, Bush now says that he would rather let it expire than give Congress another 30 days. He just comes right out and announces, then, that he will leave us all vulnerable to a Terrorist Attack unless he not only gets everything he wants from Congress -- all his new warrantless eavesdropping powers made permanent plus full immunity for his lawbreaking telecom partners -- but also gets it exactly when he wants it (i.e., now -- not 30 days from now)....
We have a President, not a king -- and in this nation, the rule of law is sovereign, not a petulant little man and his behind-the-scenes manipulative number 2, bent on creating a unilateral executive empire borne of a grudge nursed since the Nixon Administration. Just say no.
True leaders understand the need to balance civil liberties concerns with national security needs. They are not, nor should they be, mutually exclusive. Let's get to work!
Let's hit the phones and FAXes. Numbers for Senators are here. Also, ProjectVoteSmart has a great compilation of information that you can search by zipcode. Credo has a fantastic tool for contacting your representatives. EFF has a great tool as well.
You can send FAXes for free through a number of internet spots, including FreeFax, eFAX, faxzero, and any number of other places if you don't have a FAX of your own. (Do read the fine print on all of these before using them.)
Toll-free numbers for Congress from Katymine:
1 (800) 828 - 0498
1 (800) 459 - 1887
1 (800) 614 - 2803
1 (866) 340 - 9281
1 (866) 338 - 1015
1 (877) 851 - 6437
Every Senator needs a call, so please take the time to call or FAX yours today. Several Senators could use extra contact on this -- uncommitted Democrats, members of the Gang of 14, and a number of wavering Republicans. Tell them to vote "no" on cloture. It is well past time that respect for the rule of law and the role of Congress in the balance of powers was restored:

hi Christy!
Hello, Christy…
Hi Christy
to the phones! . . .
I want to know just who Bush was listening to on the phone you can get regular wire taps legally to listen to Al Quieda if you can show a judge a reason. These no reason needed wire taps though seem aimed at us. An independent review of who was listened to would be good.
That’s quite an alluring pic there–at least for us hetero males…*g*
Bayh - nothing yet.
I just called Sununu’s local office and the guy there was pleasant. don’t know it it will do any good the two sens. we have here tend to do what they are told by the party.
The whole hysteria by Bushco for Telco immunity didn’t make a lot of sense to me until I read this by Marcy:
Now I think I understand why..time is running out for the criminals..Next up will be immunity for the nukes for Turkey treason.
Straight male sighting at the Lake! Woo hoo!
Epued from bellow:
On Fisa calls.
I found the 1 (800) 828 - 0498 got me through to staff immediately.
BTW if you have blocked your number your state name will appear on their screen, so no pretending that you are in Nebraska or ….
That said, I do use whatever real connection I have to a senator or state and my research involves my studying political actions in the recent past so I can say that I know x’s legislative work. Or else I say truly that I spend time in state X (and thus spend $ there) or worked and donated for state cause X (Katrina) or admire you because you are Y or took position Y’. And then give my one minute : balance of power, respect for the congress, privacy rights, rule of country, founders’ wishes. Thank you for listening and you will write that down, won’t you.
Time spent 1.15 min.
Also sent an email to BSRH junior who is an expat containing the automatic fax your senator link. Remember that expat family members or kids in college away have broader geographical networks than we stay-at-homes.
Because one constituant fax is, alas, worth 10 from the BlueBayState.
A note to CA readers: I’m sure Sen. Feinstein would appreciate hearing your dulcet tones…
You never know who might be in her “circle of friends” tho ;)
There are a few of us hanging around…
Funny if Hilary was President I bet that there is not a Republican in the Senate who would vote to let the President have this kind of authority.
If the Dems cave on this issue again I expect that in a year the GOP will all change their minds about the issue, to bad nobody in the press will ask a GOP Senator if they will change their votes if a Dem becomes president and get it on record.
I would like to see the GOP Presidential Candidates asked if they think Hilary should have the power to listen to people’s phone calls.

Straight male sighting at the Lake! Woo hoo!
Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
There are a few more of us:)
We have an imperium, not a democracy. We may get lucky if enough of the senate decides for the latter, only if. But they have caved in before for less than this.
make that call.
I guess since McConnell is the Senator from my state, it won’t do much good to ask him to deny his own motion. Oh what the heck, I’ll email him on principal anyway.
Christy,
Keep up the fight with the clown in Our White House. I’ve contacted Casey and he seems leaning this way, Arlin ,I get more response from the wood in my shop. But if you fax Arlin be sure to ask if he supports a nuclear free Middle east if you don’t want a response.
You called?
Good morning Christy, Jane.
When the GF sees me reading Blog Active and a few other sites..She wonders if I am going to trade her in on an age appropriate male.
There are a few of us hanging around…
true, that. and thanks for the West Wing marathon on Bravo today notice. Inspiration is there…
Lugar’s office line busy for the last ten minutes - interesting….
Called Sherrod Brown (opposes immunity) and Voinovich (no position). Talked to the Washington office this time. Got to say the local offices are a lot friendlier…
Members of the Congress and the Senate allowed Bush’s illegal spying and they are trying to make the TeleCos the scape goat by using the FISA bill to point out their complicity. Expect the FISA bill to be defeated and the TelCos, already burdened by what is loosely referred to as deregulation in a scheme that continues to regulate them while stealing their property and revenue, to be further punished.
Hillary, who voted for the illegal spying, has announced that she is rushing to D.C. to vote against the Bill. The thing that is becoming increasingly clear is that you don’t want to vote for any of the candidates who are currently being supported by the media and their investment banker owners.
Arlen turned off his D.C. office fax machine on Sunday, and it was still off as of 9 AM this morning. Must have been smokin’ hot from all the faxes we sent Friday night and Saturday.
Actually it occurs to me, being a straight male and slow an all, that chimpy will have a freakin breakdown tonight if he doesn’t get his way. This could be a lot of fun.
Just a fantasy taste of what could be rather than what is.
Kinda like something we used to say about someone who operates like Bush when I was growing up:
…that chimpy will have a freakin breakdown tonight if he doesn’t get his way. This could be a lot of fun.
It *would* be fun to be able to watch the Democrats all sitting there with the proverbial shit-eatin’ grin, wouldn’t it?
Good morning.
I started the calls early this morning and just completed them. If I couldn’t get through the DC office (Hillary comes to mind) I called their local office.
It is important that the senators drown in calls from us. Guess that’s another form of waterboarding :))
Sent a fax to Salazar first thing this morning. I’m not holding out hope that he’ll do the right thing, tho.
For what it is worth, I spoke to Bill Nelson’s (D-FL) office in D.C. on Friday and again today and they state he will vote against cloture and against telecom immunity.
That’s great - surprise though.
The t-shirt ads are drawing us in.
Just got off the phone with B.Nelson’s office…a very polite staffer informed me that the Senator supports stripping immunity from the bill, but as yet has issued no position on cloture.
call update:
Boxer is with us.
Feinstein office says she hasnt decided how to vote on cloture today, but last week supported a Leahy amendment against telcom immunity.
Not good enough says I and not good enough is her amendment to pull telcom good faith assessments from district courts and transfer to FISA court.
She needs to oppose cloture and telecom immunity, and not add the BUSHCO provisions to the Patriot Act.
I just got off the phone with both Senators Clinton and Schumers offices. I was told that both Sens. Clinton and Schumer are planning to vote NO on cloture.
After I expressed my message of thanks to Sen. Clinton for coming back to Washington to vote NO on cloture, the young woman at the other end of the line said, “We have been getting a lot of calls of this nature, where did you get this information?”
“From the blogs, of course”, I responded.
“The blogs”, she said, and thanked me for calling.
I find this very encouraging.
How to prepare for the State of the Union address? Make a good stiff drink and gulp it down (you may need two). Next, call the program Saturday Night Live and it becomes the best comedy.
The Decider is running down the clock while he is beating a path running out of town. Chuck Norris is behind him shooting back at us as the dust flies. What a hero! Lordy be!
she had to ask? what do they do over there for intelligence watch meat the press
‘
I assume Bill and not Ben. The two Nelsons get “lumped” together but Bill’s voting record is about in the middle of the Dems while Ben’s is the worst.. #50.
Good to see Mrs Bill is waking up. Is Obama coming to the party?
“We have a President, not a king — and in this nation, the rule of law is sovereign, not a petulant little man and his behind-the-scenes manipulative number 2, bent on creating a unilateral executive empire borne of a grudge nursed since the Nixon Administration. Just say no.”
do you really think that all the shit that has rained down on this country comes directly from george and dick? i have a hard time with that.
Yes
Quite a few heteros. I guess I now feel comfortable enough to say that at a point in every person’s life, one has to look deeply into the mirror of one’s soul and decide one’s unique truth in the world, not as we may want to see it or hope to see it, but as it is.
And so my truth is that I am a straight American. And I am blessed to live in the greatest nation with the tradition of civil liberties, the greatest tradition of civil liberties in the world, in a country which provides so much to its people.
Lugar’s office - no position yet, but the staffer said that he probably *will* announce his position before the actual vote. I think he’s a possibility.
On that note - I gotta fly - hope to be back by 4:30 for the fun.
Carry on, all.
Yes I do believe that he is, but then I thought, “Oh gawd, she is coming to vote NO, isn’t she?!”
I don’t know where Senator Spaceman is. Last I knew, he supports Feinstein’s amendment and if not, then the adminsitartion. Voted for cloture in December.
I’m straight too, but I think you’re kind of cute.
i gave my input to cornyn’s and hutchison’s minions at DFA’s emailed behest.
i talked to them enough to make them say that the doj and the telcos didn’t KNOW it was illegal.
i laughed.
loudly.
(why should i waste being civil with such lying venal cretins?)
i asked how so?
their
congress(the telcos) wrote the law and shrub scribbled on it.Still they couldn’t abide by it, so NOW they write a get-out-of-jail FREE card.
of course, it’s Monopoly!
i still got their professional “Thank you for calling!” dismissal.
I still don’t see why the game plan isn’t to let FISA revert back to protecting our 4th amendment rights.
Christy - good morning from Okinawa.
Just called my two Washington State Senators; Murray and Cantwell. Both of their offices say that they both are against retroactive immunity for the telecoms. I hope this means that they are voting against cloture - the two respective spokespersons were a bit ‘vague’ beyond stating that each senator was against retroactive immunity for the telecoms.
I hope that they and the rest of the Democratic senators are getting a lot of calls. I hope that there are other Americans out there that are fed up, pissed off, and demanding that Democrats stand squarely for the rule of law.
Thanks,
Dave in Okinawa
h/t Jim MacGrrevey.
OT..Strange times..Pat Buchanan is sounding sane..

Broken clock is right twice a day?
Doesn’t sound like Bigot Buchanan is doing McCain any good. Which assh*le does Pat prefer? I can’t tell. Whenever a pundit says McCain and straight talk in the same breath, it helps McCain - no matter the context. Then ol’ Pat turned around and punched McCain in the eye by repeating that crazy old man spiel.
Buchanan thinks Romney is the GOP’s best candidate. I heard him express that opinion on the McLaughlin Group yesterday.
Just got finished emailing everyone on your list, Christy. Thanks for the talking points everyone. Quick lunch break, then to start on the telephone.
Called DiFi’s office again and told the very nice young-sounding staffer that I want her to vote no on cloture. Also thanked her for voting the right way last Thursday. I hope I see more votes like that one.
The repubs have been brutal to McCain. Limbaugh, JoeScar this morn, Santorum, Buchanon, all have spoken out against him. And a Cheney daughter endorsed Mitt. They’re really throwing him under the bus big time. Is that why he isn’t coming for the SOTU? And, where does that leave Lieberman?
Right now, video from NYT home page of Obama rally at American University where Sen. Ted Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy will endorse Obama. Paul Simon singing “Graceland” . . . . New campaign theme song? Nobody speaking yet . . . . Overflow crowd . . . .
Christy, I hope you’re still around. I sent my faxes out last yesterday afternoon and mentioned in one of the posts that the numbers for Kohl are transposed. My fax went through just fine when I used the number 1-202-224-9787. I have been using Selise’s numbers that are found on the same website that Hugh’s list is on. With her efforts, I have found it very easy to add all the Senator’s numbers into the Address Book for Outlook Express, and then use my computer’s fax to set up a broadcast of my faxes to whichever Senators I want. So I do one cover sheet and it adjusts with each of the Senators names. I don’t know if you want to compare her numbers to the ones you have, or where you got them, but hers seem to be good, since I’ve used them many times. However, I have been unable to find a good fax number for Debbie Stabenow other than the number for her campaign. OTOH, she is not my Senator, and she voted the right way last time, so I’m not going to worry about it. Although if anyone has a correct fax number for her, they could let me know in Facebook (I don’t always read every comment in every thread, or I’d still be reading from weeks ago. It’s terrible when you’re a slow reader.)
Here’s the RAM (Real player) clip for the Obama rally if you can’t find it on the NYT home page:
[Mod Note: link fixed]
Don’ forget that powerhouse pundit booted from O’Reilly’s, Michelle Malkin. She’s slamming the Maverick, too.
Jane has a new post up about Hillary Clinton’s FISA statement!
Just off the phone with Adam, Senator Specter’s National Security advisor. He told me Specter favors the amendment offered by Specter and Whitehouse. When I reminded him that no amendments will be allowed if he votes Yes on cloture,He replied that he believes Specter will vote NO on cloture.
Just followed up with another call to Inouye’s office. He “hasn’t made a statement yet” and the lady who answered said she did not to know which direction he is leaning.
Hey Ann — those are the numbers as Kohl has them on his Senate website. Odd…
Hi folks….
How does this sound?….
As an ordinary citizen I question the Constitutionality of the “Protect America Act” (FISA/Protect America Act bill S.2248) and the so-called “surveillance gap”. Retroactive immunity and breach of the 4th Amendment is not acceptable and as a representative of the Constitution it is your duty to stand up for the rule of law as a protector of “ordinary citizens” just like me.
Allow the sun to set on the questionable Protect America Act’s effectively unchecked judicial oversight and warrants capacities on February 1st. Vote NO on Sen. McConnell’s cloture motion today.
Thank you so much for your time.
What! Mitt used to run a hedgefund they don’t report profits like normal companies do so how do we know that Mitt’s old fund did not buy a bunch of subprime loans unless he lets an independent accounting firm look at his books?
Mitt’s business expertise for all I know could be an Enron style illusion. Mitt can’t run as a business success if we can’t verify it independently.
Pat Buchanan might invest in companies that don’t report their investments regularly but America shouldn’t. We already had a Bush MBA President who drove a few companies to bankruptcy we don’t need anymore shady dealers.
Poor old joe mighta hitched his wagon to the wrong horse. Pity. Snicker.
I just got off the phone with Ben (not Bill) Nelson’s office. Interesting to note that after asking my purposely-neutral first question (What is Sen. Nelson’s thinking on the vote this afternoon for cloture?), she started to recite that he voted for immunity because the telecoms were providing a service to the country…then paused, asked if I could hold a moment. Upon coming back, she asked if I was representing an organization (I said no), at which point she let me go on. I was clear in how I thought Sen. Nelson should vote and why the telecoms (and administration) should not get immunity and she thanked me for my comments. Might just be me, but her closing seemed genuinely thankful and not the perfunctory send off I usually get (you would be safe in assuming I call Sen. Nelson’s office more often to criticize than to thank). :)
Updated above with this:
California readers will no doubt be unsurprised by this — but Sen. Feinstein continues to dither about her vote. Please give her a call/FAX and tell her to vote “NO” on cloture. She’s a Democrat, and it sure would be nice if she acted like it.

Hi!, She (Sen. Feinstein) was the first one I called and left a message. The person I left the message with appeared to be positive about the message. Hopefully I’m reading her right.
I called my senators, Sununu and Gregg, offices and was told by the staffers that both senators are ‘undecided’ at the moment. They usually vote party, not country, so I hold little hope that they will do the constitutionally correct thing today. There is always hope however, and when they are aware that we are aware it just might help especially with those who are seeking re-election this year.
Thanks much — that was the thinking on Sununu, who is up this fall…
I’ve been calling. I’ve been trying to also put together a ”tech friendly” format of this information for my aged parents and their friends. Boy, they want to make sure their rights are protected.
Thanks for all your work Christy, Jane, EW…
I copied and pasted this information directly from Kohl’s website:
Washington Office
(2nd and C St., NE)
330 Hart Senate Office Building
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
Phone: (202) 224-5653
Fax: (202) 224-9787
As you can see, the numbers listed on your list (that I printed out from yesterday’s post) are transposed. The number that you listed as his fax number is actually his phone number and the number you listed as his phone number is actually the fax number. Since I use Selise’s numbers which are already in my address book, I did not use your numbers, so I found the transposition of Kohl’s numbers by accident. I know nothing about the rest.
That’s how they are listed above — the first column is Phone, the second is FAX.
