Oh boy, I know this has been discussed in some places before, but to touch upon the "touched"...
Last evening, between commercials for American Idol, FoxNews decided to spend some quality quantity time with Dear Leader's "legacy" so the latter would stop talking about how horse thieves are really inspiring pastors.
The result? Well, good enough for Fox News:
We talked a lot about President Lincoln. And there’s going to be a lot of people out there who watch this hour and say, is he trying to equate himself with Lincoln?
I tell you what — he thinks about Lincoln and the tough times that he had during the Civil War. 600,000 dead. The country essentially hated him when he was leaving office.
And the President reflects on that. This is a President who is really reflecting on his place in history.
As Keith Olbermann said Friday night, if this is Bret Baier's understanding of history it's bad enough...if it is Bush's interpretation of history, we all be move to a different country this weekend.
Did John Wilkes Booth obtain sovereignty or something?
You know it's true at certain points Lincoln's popularity was not high, but that was certainly NOT the case in say November 1864 when he defeated George McClellan (the David Petraeus of his time). This was documented in one of those, what do you call 'em? ... oh yeah, historical facts:
Electoral Map of 1864
The 19th Century, a time when things were so different that red states were blue states...
Lincoln won the popular vote by 10% and the electoral college at a 10 to 1 rate -- that would be a landslide by modern measurements and something George Bush wouldn't recognize.
Of course, we could also get into the statement about when Lincoln left office, since Lincoln did not exactly go "voluntarily", and it occurred five months after the election and as the war was ending (Lee's surrender occurred five days prior). Lincoln plainly was at the peak of his popularity at the time of his death. I suppose a 3rd Grade level of history is a little much to expect from a FoxNews reporter with an hour-long special about the topic.
But Bret Baier and George Bush did very much LOVE "Our American Cousin" (it was about Methodist Missionaries right?).
Of course, I suppose if we want to define "country" the way many modern Republicans do... you know the kind of Republicans that used to be "Dixiecrats" (anachronistic states rights, racist Democrats like Strom Thurmond) I suppose they may have a "Country" in mind.
The Confederacy (aka today's reddest States) ...which counted as a member Texas and Bret Baier's home of South Carolina.
These assholes really have to stop thinking they're Harry Turtledove.
Here's a pretty clear distinction between Bush & Lincoln (and there are literally hundreds of differences) summarized by Robert Kuttner when reviewing Doris Kearns Goodwin's Lincoln Bio, "Team of Rivals":
Lincoln's priority, always, was to preserve the Union and to reduce the sectional and ideological bitterness. As Goodwin brilliantly shows, he did so by the force of his personality and the generosity of his spirit. Lincoln had an unerring sense of when public opinion was ready for partial, then full abolition of slavery, and he would not move until he felt he had the people behind him. He governed by listening and persuading.
By contrast, Bush's entire presidency is about eking out narrow victories, not about building national consensus. Even when he prevails, Bush wins by manipulation and stealth. His legacy is deepened division and bitterness.
Bush is said to live in a bubble. His tiny inner circle protects him from realities that might upset him or challenge his dimly informed certitudes. Lincoln, by contrast, had the confidence to reach out to critics and seek out widely divergent viewpoints.
Of course, Lincoln was perhaps the most eloquent of all our Presidents. So you can see how Bush thinks there is a similarity as well:

Doris Kearns Goodwin is amazing. She was on Meet the Russert a coupla weeks ago and they had Peggy Nooner plopped down next to her. What a freakin insult!
You could almost see in Doris’s face that she was thinking, “I can’t believe I have to “chat” with these maroons.”
Despite all that, Doris was masterful jumping in first to dictate the direction of the “debate,” or fellate in the case of Nooner…seriously:
http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/8360.html
Doris Kearns Goodwin is a breath of fresh air in the BigMedia. So subtle, yet so in control of the discussion. Brava!
Obama has written very interesting things about Lincoln. Apparently Lincoln’s portrait is one of the few to hang in his office.

Bush was America’s last gasp at imperialism. Thank God, we got our asses kicked. Hopefully, we’ll elect a president who’ll put it all behind us.
Modern munitions and tactics make hostile occupation of a population impossible, short of genocide:
— the U.S. defeat in Vietnam
— the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan
— Israel’s multiple defeats in southern Lebanon
— the U.S. (almost completed) defeat in Iraq
— the U.K.’s stalemate in Northern Ireland against a strong minority.
— the defeat of the whites in South Africa.
— the fall of the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe.
The U.S. is looking at that full range of tactics and weapons in Iraq today, except that it doesn’t include the highly effective shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missles that we provided for use against the Soviets in Afghanistan.
See! All that shipping of arms to every tinpot dictator throughout the world over the last several decades was good after all. The war profiteers have armed and trained so many nutjobs, America can’t invade countries anymore. It worked perfectly…genius!
Those Neocons are so smart.
Hmmm…
“Separated at Birth?”
Bret Baier looks suspiciously like Jimmy Olson. Seems to have the same intellectual curiosity and talent, too.
George W. Bush - A buffoon by any other name is still a buffoon.
Ha. Chief White House Correspondent for Pox? There’s almost nothing comparable between Lincoln and Shrub. Nothing. Yet cub reporter Jimmy Olson proudly advances an obvious Repube talking point.
Ruturd Murdoch is surely bringing more of these first rate stenographers to The Wall Street Journal as well.
The History channel aired two great documentaries on oil last night. One thing is clear. America’s irresponsible corporate and political leaders have chosen to conduct a “War for Oil” instead of a “War on Energy. 35 years ago our economy fell into the abyss because energy needs and the profits, trumped reason and logic. America’s civil war for economic reasons. The South did not want to grant freedom to slaves. Slaves where the backbone of the South’s economy, as oil is the blood of our economy. “Executive Oil” and the interests they represent have hoodwinked America and like the Southern slave owners, will not give up the “energy” they need for profit! Fox like the pro slave interests of the civil war is a mouthpiece for corporate oil interests who have placed their business interests ahead of the nation’s general welfare and the planet. Meanwhile over a 60 minutes we find an FBI agent confirmed via Saddam what Bush/Cheney lied to US about. The justifications to invade Iraq are and where complete lies and fabrications. The goal……… to steal the sweet crude beneath Al Anbar. Second largest untapped oil reserve next right next to Saudi Arabia.
Much can be said for parallels in history. Slave owners and Oil Whores have much in common. Myopic self interest at the expense of life…………..
Natural Selection Corporate Treason and Executive Oil!!!
Wonder if W enjoyed Andy Young’s masterful recital of Lincoln’s speech at the MLK tribute last week.
Is the era of stiff-necked entitlement winding down?
Countrywide’s Mozilo forgoing $37.5M
Not to worry, he’ll still be limping along with about $50m in pensions and “deferred compensation.”
OT: The Clintons have been suggesting that Obama can’t win the Hispanic vote. Someone forgot to tell the the highest ranking Latino in the House and former chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus:
http://my.barackobama.com/page.....lsen/CGjl8
C-Span1 is rerunning Q & A w/Bill Buzenberg (Exec. Dir.) from Center for Public Integrity on the 900+ lies project and other topics. Saw it earlier and highly recommend.
WJC was impeached for lying under oath about a sexual affair in the WH! Bush/Cheney are fabricators for the benefit of Corporate oil interests. No one wants to hold these “fucking creeps” accountable! Guess we are all compromised by our “instilled” dependence on oil!!!!
The Iraq Oil Plot. Powell, you ain’t no Maj Gen Smedley Butler!!!
Why does 60 minutes not interview Bill Buzenburg??
With Hinkley’s death last night, betcha we’re going to be hearing about the LDS non-stop for a while. Good or bad for Mitt?
Just saw this for the first time.
The Tax Whisperer: Starring Mittens.
http://www.crooksandliars.com/.....y-whisper/
my immediate reaction was: it’s going to be bead for Mitt. Guess it also depends on how smooth a transition there (LDS) is.
The whole interview gives you a pretty good perspective as to why that ain’t likely to happen…rather lengthy comments back & forth between Lamb & Buz. about how little coverage their study has rec’d via MSM. Also lots said about the sad state of journalism these days.
Thanks, I really want to see that. Have to check it out later in the day - currently dial-up impaired.
perhaps the acoustics at the debate were as freaky nifty as they are at the Mapparium at The Mary Baker Eddy Library and Christian Science Center in Boston. “You can whisper on one side of the Mapparium and the person on the other end will hear you.”
to explain from wiki: The hard spherical surface of the globe reflects sound and produces striking acoustical effects. It forms a remarkable whispering gallery so that visitors standing at corresponding locations near opposite ends the bridge can speak to each other and be heard as if they were standing next to each other. One visitor writes:
“There are many whispering galleries around the world, such as in St Paul’s Cathedral in London, or the Echo Wall in Beijing’s Temple of Heaven. However, the Mapparium is different in that speaking in any direction, since it is a full sphere, will result in the same effect. Furthermore, standing in the middle of the sphere and speaking produces the unnerving effect of hearing yourself in surround sound with startling clarity.”
Succession by revelation seems potentially fraught.
Oliver Sacks the guy from “Awakenings” noticed that the Receptive Aphasics watching one of Reagan’s speech’s on TV in the mental ward were laughing everytime Reagan lied.
I would love to watch some Receptive Aphasics watch Bush’s last State of the Union Address.
I would love to see them watch Chris Mathews commentary on Bush’s speech.
But most of all I would love to see how they reacted to all the speeches Bush gave about the war in Iraq.
Good morning, pups. It’s [groan] Kristol, Cohen and Krugman in the NYT today. Bill “AWATT” Kristol has a thing called “Desperate Husband” where he says Bill Clinton has been playing the race card, and doing so clumsily. Roger Cohen’s column is titled “Obama’s Youth-Driven Movement” and he says this election is about the past versus the future, not black versus white. Mr. Krugman has written a cautionary tale about the “Lessons of 1992.” His question is has everyone forgotten what happened after the 1992 election?

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. I’m praying that my mute button doesn’t break during the SOTU this evening. I can watch the thing, but refuse to listen to the sound of that voice. Have a good day
I should have mentioned this before, Receptive Aphasics according to Oliver Sacks laugh in response to lies.
Re Lincoln, iirc, a lot of the votes against him came from two areas, (1) border states who had people who were going to lose their slaves; (2) Northern immigrants, Irish and Italians, who didn’t want to compete with the freed slaves for jobs.
Am I right in assuming that receptive aphasics have lost the ability to understand spoken (and written?) speech and rely on body language? This is not an area I’m in the least bit familiar with so I’m floundering a bit.
I feel it’s my civic responsibility to listen to The State of The Union Speech no matter who the President may be. But like I said the other day, I’ll likely be shooting beers.
Well, duh… What I meant to say was spoken/written language… Spoken speech. Duh..
You’re a braver soul than I. I read it in the paper the next day.
This is an argument scarce worth refuting.
One might point out, however, that the American Civil War technically ended before Lincoln “left office”, and considerably before the end of his term.
I liked the color scheme in the map above.
Bourbon helps as well.
(Gotta be American whiskey for the SOTU).
you’re right, Drink American!
Who else, other than George Bush, would have the nerve to even hint at a comparison between themselves and Lincoln. It’s not worth even considering excepting in noting the brazenness of the suggestion.
I really don’t think there is any prior president to whom he can be compared. At times, I thought of James K. Polk, simply because of Polk’s insistence on the Mexican War and coming up with false reasons for the invasion. However, Polk was a little more understandable as a man of his times (he didn’t invent Manifest Destiny) and, he was a lot more competent and successful.
Good lord you are brave. I have not listened to the lying this pri*k at any of his sotus and have no intention of torturing myself this evening. I am just counting it as one less day that this petty dictator is in the WH. As for chimp vs. Lincoln I have no doubt in my mind that chimpy would be happy if we were all slaves so he could put on his codpiece and strut his stuff with condiboots behind him whipping all she could reach.
NOTE:
Someone pointed out to me and my early early morning brain that the Edsel was a spectacular failure from pretty much the beginning. So the title is changed for accuracy.
I wonder if Receptive Aphasics can detect when a Sociopath is lying?
“Profile of the Sociopath
This website summarizes some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths.
* Glibness and Superficial Charm
* Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
* Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”
* Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
* Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.
* Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.
* Incapacity for Love
* Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.
* Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
* Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.
* Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet “gets by” by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.
* Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.
* Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.
* Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.
* Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily. “

Hmm? I wonder what would be worse for Bush’s self image and *cough* legacy? The thought that everyone knows that he is lying, or the thought that he maybe a redne, er Sociopath. (Sorry Rednecks I was just reading the criteria list for Sociopaths above and then flashed on Foxworthy’s “You might be a Redneck ” bit. As I thought about President Bush and all the weird stuff in that Kitty Kelly book on the Bushes.
The thing is we do have video of all of Bush’s speech’s. We also know that the President has lied about a number of things, like punishing the person who leaked Valerie Palme’s identity. We also have Receptive Aphasics who laugh at lies. Sooner or later someone will play Bush’s speechs to a room full of Receptive Aphasics and then we see if they can tell if Bush is lying. If they can’t then Bush is a Sociopath, if they can he is guilty. Assuming that Sociopaths can fool Receptive Aphasics that is.
Good morning pups! Packers coming this morning…eeek.
Or perhaps how horse thieves are really president and vice president. How did we get here?
Good morning Attaturk and FDLers.
Yes, Krugman revisits the early days of the first Clinton term and laments the failure to implement a truly new, progressive direction. He then expresses his fear that an incoming Democratic Administration might well suffer the same fate. He concludes,
As almost always, he’s right on the mark.
Attaturk, somehow it’s ironically appropriate that Fearless Leader unwittingly has a portrait of a horse thief on display in the Oval Office.
If Wernicke’s area is damaged in the non-dominant hemisphere, the syndrome resulting will be sensory dysprosody - the lack of ability to perceive the pitch, rhythm, and emotional tone of speech.
Speech is preserved, but language content is incorrect. This may vary from the insertion of a few incorrect or nonexistent words to a profuse outpouring of jargon. Grammar, syntax, rate, intonation and stress are normal. Substitutions of one word for another (paraphasias, e.g. “telephone” for “television”) are common. Comprehension and repetition are poor.
Example:
I called my mother on the television and did not understand the door. It was too breakfast, but they came from far to near. My mother is not too old for me to be young.
Example: [1]
If excessive, this may be confused with the psychiatric signs of “pressure of speech” and “word salad.”
Patients who recover from Wernicke’s aphasia report that, while aphasic, they found the speech of others to be unintelligible and, despite being cognizant of that fact that they were speaking, they could neither stop themselves nor understand their own words.
The ability to understand and repeat songs is usually unaffected, as these are processed by the opposite hemisphere. “Melodic intonation therapy” has been pursued for some years with aphasic patients under the belief that it helps stimulate the ability to speak normally, though recent research calls this into question. [1] Patients also generally have no trouble purposefully reciting anything they have memorized. The ability to utter profanity is also left unaffected, however the patient typically has no control over it, and may not even understand their own profanity.

This isn’t my area either but Oliver Sacks “The Man who mistook his Wife for a Hat ” and “An Anthropologist on Mars” does make the material interesting and easy to understand.
Say hi to Bret Favre for me.
Gag. How dare he compare himself to Lincoln? Lincoln was raised a poor boy who had to read by candlelight to study. W. has never known want of hunger, or darkness, or needing to walk to wherever he needed to go…he’s had everything handed to him on a silver platter.
…and he would never lay down his life for his beliefs.
OT: in light of Sibel Edmonds’ allegations, Consortium News republishes 1997 investigative article Turkey’s Drug-Terrorism Connection.
I wonder if people who get angry about politicians lying might be tapping into whatever Receptive Aphasics use to tell when people are lying? Or maybe after being lied to enough do most people say 70% of the population just stop believing anything the liar says?
On the other hand 30% of the population it seems will believe anything that plays into their own belief system,prejudices, what is convenient for them etc no matter how much you lie to them.
Morning Attaturk. Nice post.
Two of my hs classmates (brothers) were given new edsels when they first came out. We were plenty impressed - most of us were lucky to borrow mom’s station wagon.
Good morning everyone:
Must Read for the day: On PNAC, the Neocons, and the press back to 1998 to invade the middle east by Rumsfeld, Perle, Kristol, and the rest.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/.....018/444438
This needs to see the light of day. (the comments are good too!)
What I disagree with here is the source of the demonization, I saw most of the early demonization coming from the Clinton side. And as far as this election goes, with the Clinton’s press for the suit in Nevada against Culinary, and with all the caucus “irregularities” there on the Clinton side, I basically said no to the old style Dem politics.
“* Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature

Do Nancy and Harry have no friends that recognize these symptoms?
Yup! And the current situation brouht about by the neocons and others of promoting nuclear proliferation by selling nuclear secrets to rogue states.
“We talked a lot about President Lincoln. And there’s going to be a lot of people out there who watch this hour and say, is he trying to equate himself with Lincoln? ” And Perhaps wonder if Bush is Sociopath who
“Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.”
( My bold) Extremely Convincing well to be fair he does have the entire Fox Network fooled.
I watched part of this documentary too last night. We’re running out of oil? Hardly. The question should actually be, “How much oil can we steal from the Arabs?”
Dave of the Jungle, who is a long time commenter on AMERICAblog, always asks the question: Why did God put the oil under the Arabs?
Maybe to test America’s Christians? Could be. ;-)
I refuse to give those creeps that much credit; they know they are lying, and probably brag to each other about it.
“When he was leaving office”….?
He was ASSASSINATED. And it wasn’t NEAR the end of his term.
Where do they find these morons, and why are they on my television?

Just to be clear. Lincoln died in the early hours of April 15, 1865. Lincoln’s assassination came in the month following his second inauguration as president which occurred on March 4 and less than a week after Lee’s Appomattox Court House surrender which occurred on April 9. At the time of Lincoln’s passing, the Union was in the midst of a great celebration and the sixteenth president’s popularity was at its all-time height.
