For sure the ecomics have to be straight to make the administration work. I think they have to rip the subprime tranche holders by changing everybodies loan so no one walks away from their homes.
That is an easy solution no more pain for the investment banks or the Feds. The capital demands ease quickly as they don’t have to keep covering their bets (reserves. The paper is bad but the mortgages get paid at a very much lower rate. The equities will recover in time as the housing vsalues return, End of story.
New chapter…we start the new deal put people to work the housing industry will be happy to build some low income and badly needed housing. The energy industry can run with solar and wind farms and wave energy. We reduce energy demands and prices ease so inflation is checked. That stabilises the global econ too. Lots of other stuff to do as well.

It is interesting in reading emptywheels post a discussion yesterday about language and using ways of changimg meanings and softening alarm bells that way.
Look at the run up to war or any events like Naomi Klein describes in shock doctrine. The neocons are highly skilled propogandists in that respect and can define actions to give them altogether diffrent meanings. Like war is for peace..so got to have it! That stretch would take some fancy wording. The PNAC people realise they have to spin it all. I don’t watch the media now I know what they are doing. The english syntax has been morphed. Good is bad and bad is good.

Krugman considers how a Dem President next year could wind up in the same, hamstrung spot as Clinton did after the 1992 election.

PK takes as his example the health care program, and how Clinton’s lack of a definite plan when he came in to office gave the rightwing opposition the initiative on what could have been the major contribution of his presidency. I’ve been thinking over the last couple of days that something similar could happen if the candidates don’t start soon to engage the mortgage crisis and related issues. Something also similar to the result of the agreement to disregard the S&L crisis in the 1992 campaign, a bit of forbearance that might have helped get us both the present credit crisis and the second Bush presidency.

In those days, I was horribly naive.

We were earlier discussing the history of Iran. Here his a fascinating long-term history.

With apologies, I’ve got to crash now. Early meeting tomorrow. Take care.

Wow that is really funny…I was accused of being a narc as well by street people. In looking back the Black Panthers had been hassled by the FBI as well as the Angels were active so there may have been some eyeballs on the street scene in Berkeley may be some political operatives?
I was into Mountain climbing buddhist Ningmapa Acenders run by a retired CIA who had ties with the Dalai Lama. I was also into Swami Sat Chid Anada not dope. But a lot of dope was moved threough the Bay area across state lines so no doubt some of those people accusing people of narcing were probably covering for their own minions. Strange things can happen when you are not informed.

I was living in Berkeley that summer and got back into town from Palo Alto while everything was going on. Fool that I was, I had to go down there to “check things out.” Everyone, both student and cops, thought that I was a narc. Sigh! So I just walked talking to people, mostly cops.

I shoulda been prone long ago, yer killin me. *G*

And the biz, war, and family ties come together. Well done, there, hoss.

Same pages we are on. Some I recall reading, some I need refreshing.

Two heads are better than one.

Gotta go . . . some families go back to robber baron’s, some issues trace to 1917 Russia.

And some of it all, has been with us since Plymouth Rock.

Go figger how we ended up so bad, when so much of our history was due to simply surviving new opportunity to live free. Too bad our freedoms have meant taking the freedoms of others in the process.

Nitey. Oink me, hoss, would LOVE to chat more off list.

People’s Park Defense fund got most of the demonstrators released. I was a peaceful yoga student hippie. I came over the night before and someone gave me a red pill probably seconal I was groggy. As I wandered around I saw the fence tear gas, angry sherrifs and was arrested. I had come over from the Haight where I worked in a health food store. Sort of a mistake checking out the Peoples Park but not aware of the level of action that had taken place before the fence. Had I known the full story I would not have been there. I did attned and march in peace rallies in the Bay area but was nore interested in the cultural changes that were taking place including the music. I did someone elses 30 days. The defense fund did not help me.

After Ike, our side didn’t get much: three years of Kennedy, five years of Johnson (who wasn’t a peace candidate after all), four years of Carter, and eight years of Clinton (the best Republican president since Ike).

Kennedy was a military adventurer, but he was smart.

Johnson ran as a peace candidate and immediately turned Vietnam into a real war. But, God bless him, he got the civil rights stuff straightened out. For that, he should be recognized as a major hero.

Carter was a damn good president but not a good communicator.

Clinton was DLC, i.e., an Eisenhower Republican. I don’t mean to comdemn him, but he sure as hell didn’t restore the New Deal. Also, he was lucky to be president during the dot.com boom, which bouyed up the economy a hell of a lot.
