[Please welcome Alan Grayson in the comments. As always, please stay on-topic with guests. Any off-topic discussions should be taken to the prior thread. -- CHS]
It's been over two months since Blue America has endorsed a new candidate (Gretchen Clearwater in Indiana's 9th CD against reactionary Blue Dog Baron Hill). In the interim we've been urging progressives to donate to the progressives in early primary battles, particularly Donna Edwards (MD-04), John Laesch (IL-14), Mark Pera (IL-03), and Vic Wulsin (OH-02).
Today we've invited a truly exceptional candidate on for a chat, someone who has already accomplished a great deal outside of government and who wants to run against corrupt Republican rubber stamp Ric Keller in central Florida. Before we get into just how Alan Grayson has been working on our behalf as a private citizen, let's take a look at the district and the race as it's shaping up.
Keller has been a rubber stamp backbencher from FL-08 (Orlando area) since 2000 and has accrued an unremarkable, albeit abysmal, voting record across the board, supporting the far right line on everything-- from choice (anti) to gay rights (anti) to Bush's ill-advised war and occupation of Iraq (pro). The district, which has seen a huge influx of new residents-- something like 150,000-- many of whom are from Puerto Rico, has been trending blue. Since 2002, Keller's majorities have shrunk down from 65% to 61% to 53%. The more people get to know him, the less they like him.
Last year he ran against a reactionary old-line Democrat, Charlie Stuart, part of the Central Florida establishment -- at least by marriage -- with no personal accomplishments whatsoever (a kind of mini-Bush in that respect) and with policy positions that should ring alarm bells... loudly: anti-choice, pro-corporation, unwilling to speak out against the Iraq fiasco. He wants to run again this year. Fortunately, Alan Grayson can prevent Florida voters being stuck with a choice between a horrible Republican and a nearly as bad Democrat.
Last Sunday DWT carried a story, The Crime of the Century: A Scandal of Epic Proportions That Will Haunt the Legacy of the Bush Regime. In many ways that -- and the Vanity Fair expose it's based on -- is the perfect introduction to Alan Grayson and what makes him the perfect progressive candidate, and someone Beltway Insiders, and especially everyone inside the Bush Regime, needs to be very, very afraid of.
Alan knows exactly where all the bodies are buried-- and he can't wait to get to Congress so the judicial gag order he's under won't apply. And it goes beyond "just" Halliburton, KBR and the usual war profiteer suspects. You know all the crime always being alluded to in regard to members of Congress and defense contractors? They better pray with all their might that Grayson doesn't wind up with "Representative" in front of his name.
When I asked him, for example, about Duncan Hunter, Duke Cunningham and Jerry Lewis he replied "I wish I could tell you about that actually, but the rule about sealed cases is such that I'd get locked up if I did." But not on the floor of the House. Instead he was able to speak in generalities:
I think what the Republicans, particularly the ones in California and the Southwest in general have recognized is that you can make an awful lot of money from government contracting. In regard to Iraq, I've described those people as 'war-whores.' But it's not limited to Iraq, and in Southern California -- particularly in the area around San Diego [Howie says: this is Duncan Hunter/Duke Cunningham-Brian Bilbray/Jerry Lewis/Darrell Issa/Dana Rohrabacher/Ken Calvert territory; sound familiar?] -- there's an awful lot of companies that exist, basically, to rip off the government.
And I think that's one reason why the U.S. Attorney in San Diego was replaced [by the Alberto Gonzales Justice Dept.]... concerns that there would be legitimate investigations into that whole scene. Government contracting generates a huge amount of profit -- some of it legitimate, some of it illegitimate -- that is doled out to people in accordance with a very subjective process that's subject to all sorts of favoritism and manipulation. Sometimes the people who are in a position to dole out this money are influenced by the people who end up receiving it. And that's what we call in general terms 'corruption.' ... The only part of the Defense Department that's actually been cut since Bush took over has been the auditing staff.
Alan Grayson has been investigating and prosecuting corruption and, particularly war profiteering cases, for quite some time. Few people -- other than someone like Dick Cheney, of course -- know as much about it as he does. We need this man in Congress... now.
For those who haven't had a chance to read it yet, let me quote from the end of the Vanity Fair article:
In the more distant future, a Democratic administration might open up the vaults and expose the American public to the scale of what has been looted. "What we have seen up to now is the worst of the worst in terms of a deliberate cover-up," Grayson says. But if and when it comes to an end, he thinks it's entirely possible that Congress will appoint a special prosecutor-- one whose targets might one day reach "an extremely high level."
After Jane sent me this, I called Alan and read it to him on the phone and asked him if he'd be advocating impeachment for Bush and Cheney now if he were in Congress. He didn't hesitate or hum or haw. He just said:
"Absolutely. The right wing's worst nightmare would be Alan Grayson with subpoena power. Gag order and the threat of criminal contempt have kept me and my clients quiet up until this point but if I get elected to the House of Representatives that's all gone. The speech and debate clause protects me entirely. At that point I can tell everybody everything that I know and, on top of that I'll have the ability to actually hold hearings, launch investigations, assign staff and subpoena people... Just on the basis of what I know of government contracting alone I think that there are strong arguments in favor of impeachment."
I'm eager for Congressman Grayson's first tete a tete with Madam Speaker. If you want to see that too -- and to see a progressive leader and fighter from central Florida, someone who believes with his whole being that "you don't beat Republicans by imitating Republicans," please consider 2008's first Blue America plea. Let's help this guy get the Democratic nomination and then beat the Republican rubber stamp.
Earlier today Alan put together a special little video clip for Crooks and Liars and I suggest you take a look.

Howie!
Welcome to the Lake, Alan…
I’m really glad to be doing this. I wish that every candidate had to take a spelling and typing test. If we did that in 2000, then maybe George Bush wouldn’t be Perzident.
Hello Alan Grayson, welcome to firedoglake!
Welcome to FDL, Alan. Do you think FL-08 is ready for not just a Democrat, but a progressive Democrat– and one who’s talking about impeaching Bush and Cheney to boot? I mean isn’t this a district that has been electing a right wing extremist to Congress over and over?
Thanks. The water feels just right.
Hi Alan Grayson, welcome!
Oh, yes. FL-8 is a district with over 100,000 new registered voters, net, since the last Republican gerrymandering. By November, the registration will be Dem 36, Ind 26, Rep 38. And this year, a 2% cushion is nowhere near enough for a Republican.
Wow … welcome Alan Grayson!
So refreshing! we certainly need you in office!
Welcome Alan
Welcome future Congressman!
Now that former EPA administrator Christine Todd Whitman has tesified before Congress that the Clear Skies Act of 2003 would increase pollution, would you repeal that awful bill?
if only.
He’s kinda like “no failure left behind”
well actually he is “no failure left behind”
Anytime the Bush Administration names something “Clear Skies,” watch out. Maybe everything passed between 2001 and 2006 should be repealed. We’ll call that the “Waking Up from the Nightmare Bill of 2009.”
Howie, our district is a long skinny meandering “a la Tom Delay” contrivance that packed for Reps. Thanks to new people, as you mentioned, that’s changing. What’s also changing is that new Democrat registrations in the Red county portions of the district is also up, surpassing the efforts of the Reps in the last quarter. Dem are mobilized. Go Blue!!!
By the way, am I allowed to go to the bathroom during this? No? What if I really have to go?
Cross your legs and think of the empire.
Welcome, Alan.
if only the Bush admin were the last episode of Newhart.
Welcome Alan - “The Waking Up from the Nightmare Bill of 2009.”
Wow - that could be a loooong bill…(that I would love to see)
I am thrilled that FDL and the netroots is interested in Alan. A couple months ago, I offered to volunteer with Alan’s campaign, though I’m about 30 miles outside his district. One reason: I’ve studied government-contractor fraud for about 5 years and started blogging about it last year. For several reasons, it IS one of the biggest issues facing us taxpayers.
I prefer to think of it like the show Dallas, where it turned out that a whole season was all a bad dream.
Welcome Alan! Are you excted about a strong progressive majority!?
There are nine candidates in my district. I’m sure that I’m the only one who gets the reference. England . . . England . . . England.
Alan - could you tell us a bit about your district and what issues the voters are most interested in?
Oh, yes. That means that we get to show the world what it’s really like to live under true progressive government — government of the people, by the people, and FOR THE PEOPLE.
Alan, what do you think is the recovery time for the DOJ? Now that the precendence is established that they are tainted, is it even possible?
Besides limiting the seal period for False Claims Act actions is there anything else you would like to see changed regarding that particular piece of legislation?
Hello Alan,
What do you think of EGTRRA, which will reduce estate taxes to zero in 2010 before zapping them back to the 2001 level in of 2011? Do you have any feelings about how that should be reformed, if at all?
Thanks for all your work,
Sara J
As opposed to “for the Profiteers”
Alan, it’s my fondest wish in the world to see some of the Republican criminals– top to bottom– who have run wild in the last 7 years, spend their remaining days in prison. Should I just give up on that dream or is it really possible? I mean I know you have been working on a lot of cases that involve corruption. Do you think there’s a real chance for Justice to ever come to fruition in the cases against some of these crooks? I mean you told me about the Cheney case involving gasoline for our troops in Iraq and it sounded pretty open and shut for a long, long prison term for that character.
My district, like Central Florida and Florida itself, is a cross-section of America. It’s a little more Latino, and a little more transient, but it’s America. Hurricanes, flood insurance and global warming are big issues here, but so is the War, the economy, and our miserable health care system.
‘Sorry that my comment is so far away from what it’s answering. I’ve never done this and haven’t yet got the rhythm down.
do you have any particular knowledge of, or interest in, the claims made by Sibel Edmonds?
good primer ->http://letsibeledmondsspeak.bl.....monds.html
I’d like to see the law REQUIRE the Administration to pick up meritorious cases. Doesn’t that sound right? This Administration has turned a blind eye to case after case of contractor fraud in Iraq. The President took an oath of office to uphold the law, and he’s ignoring it.
Welcome Alan,
What’s with the old line progressive democrats up there in DC? Why are they so ineffectual? Can we hope for the spell to end?
Oh, yes. The limitations period for major fraud can be as long as 10 years. The crooks don’t have to get away with anything, if there is the courage to prosecute them. As I told the Senate when I testified there, we don’t need new laws — we need new leaders.
Well that sounds like a good range of issues to take on … voters I find are much smarter than many operatives give them credit for … if our candidates talk honestly with them instead of spinning nonstop.
Sounds like you’re the kinda guy to do just that!
And welcome to the Grayson volunteers and constituents joining us today - it’s great to have your input too!
Amen, Howie. Accountability. What a concept.

I’m always curious as to how candidates would label themselves. I think it’s a possible true test of a candidate’s authenticity. “Courage” if you will. How do you rate yourself Mr. Grayson. Left of center? A centrist? A progressive? A liberal? Care to comment?
When is civil disobedience valid and in what forms?
Which one is your favorite Disney character and why?
Can we hope for the spell of ineffectual progressive Democrats to end? If I’m elected, you can do more than hope for it — you can count on it.
Thanks, Suin. It’s a pleasure to hang with all the fine FDL folks.
When is it not valid?
Thank you, Peter.
Music to my ears… If you are going to do that… I’ll go to DC and work for you.!
Mr. Grayson. Why do you want to be elected?
I have a head and a heart. That makes me a Progressive. I belong to the Conscience Party.
Alan …. could you fill us in on your positions on Iraq?
What committee did you tesify before?
To join with all of you, to make the world a better place. Justice. Equality. Peace.
My policy is that we should have left Iraq a looooooooooooong time ago.
I live in the next C.D. My rep is Tom Feeney. He and Keller are both reprehensible and corrupt. Best of luck Alan. Just a note: One of my friends told me she went to a House party for Stuart and signed up to volunteer but there was no follow up from him. There’s very few things she would lie to see more than Keller out on his butt. So, there are lots of interested people out there and I hope you are able to do a better job of following up with them than was the case two years ago.
Welcome, Alan Grayson. And, thank you for your courage and persistence. Not only are you up against the Republicans but many Democrats, as well.
It seems for my entire adult life (and I’ve been around the block a few times) a very active powerful subculture of military and former military people (I’m including CIA, NSA, etc.) have been involved in the war business. In the mid 1970s I came across former Pentagon people who were selling arms to “third world companies”. They said if you want to make lots of money, it is the most lucrative business out there. America, to them, was nothing more than a giant piggy bank. Government contract firms grew by giant leaps.
If you are in any government agency and work for or invest in any government contract firm, that is an egregious conflict of interest. Can we identify the culprits by name and publish their names in an expose? They always seem to be hidden under a rock or in some dark hole. How do you shed light on them and expose them specifically? Like, by name and association.
We just heard from a candidate you testified in front of the United States Senate that “we don’t need new laws — we need new leaders.” Right now we have 4 donations to Alan’s campaign. We’re less concerned about amounts than we are about the number of people who chip in. Even a $5 or $10 donation is going to add to that and make a statement to the local media in Alan’s district who treat these races like a horse race, rather than a serious campaign. It means more to them that x number of people contributed than something of substance he proposes. So… please consider going to the Blue America page and chipping in.
Three times before the Senate’s Democratic Policy Committee, and once before the House on a bill to strengthen whistleblower safeguards
TaxpayerTom, we have only a limited time with Alan, I hope we can focus on questions that are respectful and substantive.
Howie.. if you are reading… can we mount a challenge to Eliot Engel with a real progressive? Please.. pretty please.
As a former resident of Orlando, Altamonte Spgs and Winter Park, I am so thrilled that there’s a real fighter showing up for Central FL. It has been so disheartening to see how reactionary Florida has gotten since the days of Lawton Chiles and Bob Graham. I am in between Visa cards at the moment, but as soon as it shows up in the mail, you will be the first on my list for a donation.
How about the former Secretary of the Navy? I have a lawsuit against him right now, alleging that he and one of his cronies lined up contracts for Custer Battles in Iraq (CB received over $100M in 13 months), and then arranged to buy the company for A DOLLAR.
Sounds as though you could have a great deal of rewarding fun as a member of Congress pricking bubbles and greedy pri*ks. As you tear the shrink wrap off those bundles of looted bucks, consider shrink-wrapping the looters, and using the immobile dummy/mummys as exhibits in your cases.
You have chosen a Herculean, Sysiphean task.
Good luck, and what can we do to help get this whole ball rolling?
The venues are out there as exampled by Taxpayers Against Fraud.
Thank you!!! And think about moving back to Orlando between now and Aug. 26, so you can vote for me in the primary!
Excellent question. And I would take it a step further. What do you, Mr. Grayson, think is the best approach to settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian situation?
Taxpayers Against Fraud named me Attorney of the Year, for my cases against contractor fraud in Iraq.
I’m in for $25 if 5 people want to match me for $5 each
I’m in the City Beautiful, Alicia. Seems like whoever isn’t reactioary is apathetic. That has to change and it can. Alan can do it and if he can get Keller out, Feeney won’t be far behind.
This is one of the reasons we’re started now, and giving ourselves time for real outreach.
I hate him too– especially because of his collaboration with Bush on Iraq– BUT, there are far worse Democrats all across the country. We’re working our asses off to help with a campaign against a real Satan in Chicago for 2010. If progressives in Engels’ district find a good candidate I’m sure we’d try to help. Meanwhile we have great candidates around the country running as fighting progressives– Donna Edwards, John Laesch, Mark Pera, Vic Wulsin… and now Alan. Let’s maximize our potential with these folks.
Since Howie has given us some time off on Blue America, I’ll add another $25 … can we hit 10 $5 donations!
Alan strikes me as precisely our kinda candidate and I want to make sure we have his back!
Put me down for $25
Israel and Palestine. Let me tell you a story. In 1980, I spent several months in Kenya. There were a lot of ANC refugees from S. Africa. One of them became my friend. He told me that he was absolutely certain that one day, there would be democracy in S. Africa. I asked him how — strikes, civil war, invasion from neighboring countries, economic collapse? No, he said, none of that. “People will change their minds,” he said. And that is always the answer.
Suin, Alan’s positions on Iraq are more fleshed out here. It’s enough to make your progressive heart go pitter pat.
When I lived in Fla. I voted for Mr. Chiles and Mr. Graham. Those were the good old days. Weren’t they? ;0)
It’s a lot easier to beat Keller than Feeney. The registration numbers are much better here. And no one, even on the other side, has anything good to say about Keller.
OK, I’ll match all the $5 donations that come in between now and 4pm (EST)– up to the legal limit. Again, here’s where you can do it.
Alert — better days ahead!
I tossed a few, but I am not working much these days.
I suspect when we get out econo stim a lot of money will go to act blue.
Let’s stim the congress~
Wow, give this man a round of applause!! Come on, I want to open my window and hear those hands clapping!
Not a bad idea! My vote would certainly count for more than it would here in LA. If I can’t do that, I will get in touch with my progressive O-Town friends and tell them all about you.
Donations:
I’m in. Does that count as hands clapping?
Howie is and the FDL girls are truly amazing people. And their smart too.
Bravo! And thank you so much!
They sure were, OK. We’ve always had nutballs in the Sunshine State (Cassadega, anyone?) - it’s part of its charm - but they weren’t in charge of everything!
Alan, What did you think of Shine?
I am a bigger Joni fan than you are!!!
Soo good post..
Hi I’m Alan I’m sane and I’m six foot four…the same hieght as Clinton and Lincoln…I have brains, balls and character…Tittle… ‘Mr. Payson goes to Washington’..C&L video is a must see…Alan is in your face you scum dogs lying stealing alley rats in the WH…
Whoa hoo..let’s bust out the knuckles, take some numbers and kick some serious ass!!! Go Alan you are the man. More of this please… And by the way thanks for recovering $10 million of our stolen take dollars…do the crime do the time…where’s the popcorn
Great! If you can’t/won’t move to Orlando, then tell your friends about me, and go to the DFA Grassroots All-Stars website to vote for me.
Taxpayers Against Fraud named me Attorney of the Year, for my cases against contractor fraud in Iraq.
THAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ALONE is worth a contribution - nothing makes my blood boil faster than the thought of someone using this tragedy to line their pockets with gold…
Better to send a few dollars Alan Grayson’s way via Blue America…
Bush has increased the size of government by more than any other president, except for Medicare, Part D did we get anything for the money?
Something as progressive as following the existing laws and holding people accountable (Mr Wolfowitz ha???) can we finally get cash out of politics and get public campaign finance so we don’t have to ante up (all the time) to get what is ours… by law - a democracy?????
Will you do that for us Alan?
Alan, do you have a webpage that I can pimp on my blog?
Wonderful! They are welcome to email us at jetATgraysonforcongressDOTcom if they want to volunteer as well. We are always looking for more people.
You think that you’re a bigger Joni fan than I am? Not possible, my friend. Only Howie can said that.
I preordered Shine, and it’s sitting right here on my desk. Ballet dancers, beckoning to the Moon.
You are cruisin for a bruisin.
Alicia you can find our website at www.graysonforcongress.com
You rock.
Now that Siun’s in, I guess we need another 5 for $5!
Sandman, all that money is lost in the sands of Iraq. Ozymandias = Bush.
passion - check
humor - check
ability to cut to the heart of it: “we don’t need new laws, we need new leaders” - check
i’m in for $100.
Rosalind, I would give you a hug, but 21st Century campaigning doesn’t always allow that. So give yourself a hug for me.
Thanks! I’ll have a post up today.
Jetsnet - wow! Alan’s Iraq postions are great …
In fact, I’m going to send an extra $25 to thank him for actually mentioning that the Iraqis don’t want us there. Our so-called progressive leaders never seem willing to acknowledge that Iraqis should have a say in what is done to them … Go Alan!
Would that be Five for Fighting?
Yes, I will do that. No more laws for sale.
Keller, who I’m running against, took money from 30 restaurant PACs, and then introduced a bill to prevent you and me from suing restaurants. I’m not kidding. The law is for sale. It has to stop.
Bangin’ website, BTW.
I never noticed Howie adoring Joni until I saw the lovely video i assume he produced with Chinese Cafe today. But I wager I am the Joni fan of all time.
We could start a quiz.
What are your thoughts regarding a North American Alliance that essentially removes the borders and unifies Canada, the U.S. and Mexico and the potential issuance of an Amero to replace the dollar?
That’s the part that most people don’t understand. What right do we have to be in Iraq, when 80% of the population (basically, everyone but the Kurds) wants Americans to leave, and over 65% support armed attacks on Americans?
Do you believe there should be a cap on immigration?
AWESOME..YOU WILL HELP TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY…OUR CONSTITUTION…OUR REPUTATION AS A GOOD NATION NOT A THUGGERY BULLY MURDERING FACSIST CORPORATE DICTATORSHIP…BUT A REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY WITH A SECULAR GOVERNMENT. OH I HAD A DREAM
What makes Keller stand out among so many awful Republican members of Congress? I was so happy to see Dave Weldon announce his retirement yesterday. Florida would so much better off if it was followed by 8 or 9 others with almost identical voting records. But is there anything that stands out about Keller– aside from him being completely homophobic, 100% against women’s choice, 100% in favor of the war… all the regular Republican crap?
Great idea — a Joni quiz. Who wrote “Twisted”? No, wait, I’m getting off topic.
