FISA debate continues on the floor of the Senate. Please take the time to make calls or send FAXes to your elected representatives reminding them that their oath of office includes a promise to defend and uphold the Constitution -- and that the foundation of American government is the rule of law. You can find contact information here. Will try to liveblog as we go below...
FYI, video of Sen. Feingold's remarksthis morning is available here, and his full statement is here.

SEN. HATCH: blah blah blah Be afraid. Run for the hills and support the Bush Administration or else. blah blah blah [CHS notes: Hatch needs better media coaching -- his disgusted sigh in the voice routine is tired and overused. Just so he knows, it's transparently coached, a bit hackneyed and utterly unconvicing, and he needs new material.] Says this will be the first time that a court order will be required to target a US citizen regardless of where they are in the world -- doesn't sound like an expansion to him. Terrorists shouldn't receive protections of the 4th amendment. [CHS notes: And terrorists who are not US citizens do not get such protection under any version and you know it, Orrin. Let's not let logic get in the way of a good conspiracy theory indeed. And those who are US citizens? Can be targeted with a warrant at any time -- just like any other criminal in the US with any other law enforcement officer investigating any illegal and dangerous activity. And the Administration still has a 72-hour emergency window to start a tap before they have to finish their paperwork. Which every president has been able to accomplish from the 1970s forward until now. Why is the Bush Administration incapable of doing their work in accordance with the law, Orrin?]
Hatch says that he's not willing to support a bill that placates fringe political groups. [CHS notes: yes, like people who want to uphold the rule of law and the Constitution while simultaneously protecting the national security. You know, Americans who think for themselves. Oooooh, scary, Sen. Hatch. By your logic, the Founders were a radical fringe group. Good to know.]
SEN. SCHUMER: Rebutting Hatch -- says that the rule of law must be upheld, not just a blank check for the executive branch. Taking a few moments to talk about the economic stimulus package being debated currently in the House.

It’s just so painful to watch Orrin.
I think I’m going to be sick.
Hello again, Christy…
and equally to just listen
I’m gonna need more caffeine if they keep putting these people up to lie like this. I just needed to say that…
gag me with a spoon. No wait, I don’t need the spoon.
CSPAN2 website for viewing is here.
OMG! Orrin just PICKED HIS NOSE ON TV!
What does this TPM article mean? Is there really hope or is this more kabuki?
View proceedings live here: http://www.cspan.org/watch/cs_.....8;Code=CS2
You know they’ve all been spanked by Cheney. Marcy of course has a post on Cheney’s Don’t Make Me Come Over There speech for the Heritage Foundation. Funny, when he decides to show his little round body. It’s not even Ground Hog’s Day yet.
I despise Hatch more than I despise most…creatures…in government. He is absolutely loathsome and vile. I labored through life for 6 years in the state saddled with him as Senator.
Just showed a crawl that said the vote is at 2pm.
Orrin “lawful tools” - and if they are not lawful, we will make them lawful.
data mining for gold?
The new material must be held up due to the writers’ strike. Damn unions.
Hatch: Can’t have sunsets because the heads of all those government employees who know exactly what they are doing would explode if the law was ever changed in the future.
Why not? He’s been farting out his mouth for several minutes now out of respect for the Boy King.
Timely to the Senatorial combat playing out right now, Digby’s got a great post up today about understanding the conservative mind. When the kabuki takes its lunch break, zip over there and read.
The synergy of the blogs will be stronger than the synergy of double-talking Specters, Shame-lesses, and their ilk.
From last thread:
Selise, the pdf for “Filibusters and Clotures in the Senate” can be found by google: Congressional Research Service RL30360
Here we go….we are a fringe political group….
Hatch is a lot more worried about the terrorist than he is about the Constitution. I don’t seem to remember terrorists being mentioned in his oath of office. The Constitution on the other hand is.
Schumer reminding everyone of the 72 hour emergency provision.
Jeez, that tie is ugly.
Punxatawny Bigtime?
Sounds like much better news than 90 minutes ago from Reid’s office. Woo-hoo!
I’m not letting down my focus, just appreciating when collective intention works. Damnation, life is so cool.
Off to the phones.
*BELIEVE*
He is so full of shit. Thank god he’s done.
All 70% of us.
The vote on the SJC amendment is at 2 pm. The arguments right now are on that amendment. They’ve said that several times this morning…
ya’ll are all patriots. i haven’t heard orrin the borin’ for many years and just the thought of that voice gives me a touch of heartburn.
Thought I’d repost the Dodd phone call widget.
Maybe it is time to slow down their data mining practices by including the “trigger” words and phrases in every bit of correspondence and in all phone calls. That will mean they will have to look at each of the millions of data that they are vacuuming.
As for Hatch, his speech has bombed with me.
If there really was a GWOT, there would have been IEDs and car bombs going off all over the US before and after 9/11. Nothing could stop that…not Homeland Security, not FISA…some would have been successful. 9/11 was, in part, successful, because Cheney was at the controls that day and no one stopped the planes. What a load of crappola.
This is all about a power grab by Bushco that was planned for years.
Schumer doesn’t want to talk about FISA, because he is following the Neocons on this, and doesn’t want to have to speak about it. What a tool.
oh thanks wdd, I missed it if you posted it earlier :)
Just wanna give a shout-out to CHS for the live-blogging! Anything that keeps me informed without actually having to watch the Rethugs “argue” is great. If I had to live-blog Orrin the Borin’ I think I’d have to start drinkin’.
Schumer is my Senator. He is a disgrace.
The fact that there was a UC for the 2PM SJC vote means that the time line has been well worked out in advance.
Hatch, as far as I can surmise, has always been kind of a 2-sided cardboard cut-out: one for when he’s in the majority, and one when (oh the horror) he’s in the minority. Must apparently have a leak-proof liner between the layers, because there’s absolutely NO discernible bleed-through of logic between the sides.
That he can carry on as he does with a straight face is a mystery, a gawdawful-given “talent”, as it were…. /s
I e-mailed my senators and phoned them. Whatever it is they always seem to need a double dose. Thank you Christy.
My, they make me tired. Off to another cup of strong English tea.
Anal Hatch needs to SIT DOWN AND STFU!!!! And Schumer is another one, he is DEAD to me after shoving Mukassey down our throats!
I hope every BushDog is seeing the LAST OF THEIR DAYS in OUR CONGRESSIONAL BUILDINGS!
Also, I’m all over the phones today calling these critters, and ESPECIALLY Obama and Clinton, who are no where to be seen!

[RBG Note; edited to remove reference to violence against public officials.]
it’s almost surreal that he’s talking about the stimulus, Bush’s Bailout

Reminds me of the Bush talking point that our troops volunteered for their duty, ‘no one forced them to join.’
The same could be said for Mr. Bush and Cheney. No one forced you to be president and vice president. Follow the rules or get out.
Schumer is congratulating Pelosi for going from $800 per to $300 per. What the heck is the matter with this idiot.
You’re welcome, but not my initial post tho (who was that masked man?) Just putting it out there for anyone who missed it earlier.
And I am really pissed at how the mortgage situation is all being framed, ie it is no one’s fault. People are at fault, and have benefitted enormously through the pain brought to others, here and around the world. We need to find a means (class action against officials in the brokerage houses?) to hold them accountable. Clearly with the DCCC in place, Congress is not a place we can turn to on this.
Geez, I just posted my latest 500 word fax to the Senators downstairs, wrote a note thanking Selise for making it possible to broadcast the fax to 17 Senators by creating one cover page and hitting send, essentially, and you’re at #40 already! Can’t keep up! (Huff, puff, huff, puff…out of breath!)
omg, you’re not kidding? gaaahhh!
Dig the hole faster.
Walmart Rejoices.
Hey Orrin, I like fringe. Many pioneers wore fringe.
Wear some fringe in support of FISA.
Only a little OT:
ask nadler 2 impeach!
C-span shows neurosurgery?
The things I miss using dial-up….

Hugh,
Somebody ought to write a bill requesting the deletion of the phrase “to uphold and defend the Constitution” from the oath of office for senators, the president and vice president. it would offer a lot of interesting possibilities for debate, especially if it were introduced by Senators Dodd and Feingold.
Well, he doesn’t want the rest of the country to think ill of his cronies in NY who are supporting his campaign and Hillaries (and Liebermans and Rahms). And, of course it meant no need for him to get his feet dirty with something as mundane as FISA. New York, you have to get someone better.
well Hi Hey anyway!
Nadler’s taking the AIP*C “high road” -supporting Bush and Cheney in thanks for bringing war to the M.E. He is a tool.
Another Bush-Push of fear-mongering, spin and lies. There is no mea culpa big enough to hide behind for missing these votes or for letting BushCo pro-actively coverup and excuse its criminal activities.
Pelosi sold the country down the river again. Totally caved to Bush. The rumor is big ~$80 billion more tax cuts and crumbs for the people who need help.
Just finished telephoning Diane Feinstein’s San Diego office (couldn’t get through to her DC office), expressing my opposition to her proposed amendment to the FISA bill, and urging her to join Senator Chris Dodd in filibuster.
Given Feinstein’s record of late I’m not holding my breath. She sure has been disappointing, to say the least.
these guys are all up there stroking one another, giving each other verbal blow jobs. porn on cspan. fantastic
Politicking
“Let’s make a deal,” said the Polytick.
Listening to him made me feel kinda sick.
“Trust me,” he smarmed in an oily soft voice,
“The baddies will get you, you’ve no other choice.”
Why is the Bush Administration incapable of doing their work in accordance with the law, Orrin?”
“Executive Oil,” is above the law….
be careful what u ask for… even in jest…
The background music up on CSpan is very doom and gloomy - how appropriate.
all the more reason to let him know.
Yeah, and all that money the rich get is going to be invested overseas, not into this economy.
Impeach Pelosi and her boyfriend Bush.
the one by richard beth?
yes, i have it. got it and a bunch of stuff printed up at kinkos last month.
Does anyone know what that piece is and what it’s about? I was wondering about this yesterday when they had music on for the quorum call.
to my ear, it’s always very appropriate to the occasion. one of the “fun” things to note, while agonizing over the shenanigans on & off the Senate floor.
for my digg mates, to pump up the volume digg Dodd’s phone widget — and all the fdl posts on FISA, so easy to do from the home page here.
Is it helpful or harmful to call Hatch’s office and RESPECTFULLY (gag!) explain the realities of the “fringe group” thing? I’ve wanted to do that, but don’t know if it would do more harm than anything?
siri
This is all about a power grab by Bushco that was planned for years.
Have you read Prof. David Ray Griffin’s “Debunking 9/11 Debunking” yet?
right up your alley, methinks. And - wow.
Also Prof Steven Jones’ “Why Indeed did the WTC Buildings Collapse?”
http://www.infowars.com/articl....._jones.htm
sorry, all for the OfT - carry on.
I am lousy at that. But a good question.
Absolutely!!
Oh man, the music. I think the soundtrack from one of Hitchcocks movies would be appropriate, since it seems we’re bound to get “stabbed in the back” no thanx to Obama & Clinton.
Yes I have.
Wow — considering the substantial amount of work that Nadler has done on oversight and rule of law issues, that is beyond harsh. Especially given a number of arguments I know he’s had behind the scenes on a lot of things that progressives care about. Truly.
Don’t make villains out of people on a single issue.
TPM notes that the WH has decided to turn over documents on wiretapping to the House requested last May in an effort to convince them to back immunity for telecoms. Another case of waiting nearly a year and then trying to get something done in a week. Brilliant.
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/005132.php
Pelosi, Boner, Treas Sec Paulson coming up soon.
Nancy, Nancy, Nancy…we had such high hopes. More socialism for the uberclass, crumbs for the working class.
Kennedy up.
Go Kennedy!
Big Ted’s up…go Sawks!
It was interesting on KO last night that the study of Bushco lies shows a “spike” of lying before needing something rubberstamped by Congress. It seems like Cheney shows up to turn up the volume on preapproved
talking pointslies. Thanks Christy. It didn’t ring true to me, but I was not sure enough of details to speak up. I’ve always been impressed with him.
Just to be clear, Orrin Hatch works for Osama and the Garden of Eden is in Missouri.
Kennedy up.
So I guess, for Teddy, the “FISER” bill is the same as the “FISA” bill?
Also via TPM the current deal is that there will be a straight up or down vote on the SJC version this afternoon around 2PM ET. Some weaselly Democrats are expected to vote with Republicans to defeat it at which point reconsideration of the Intel version and amendments to it will begin.

be careful what u ask for… even in jest…
________
yeah, guess i got a little carried away there ……..
but those pompous arses would just get all indignant ‘n stuff and act offended at the very thought of it, hypocritical fu_kers ……
Shore.
Thanks speaking up on that. I thought Nadler was a bit more progressive than a hard line bluedog.
Kennedy always has a good speech. I sent letters to all three candidates. any more suggestions?
yeah, emptywheel. Kennedy gets your point about more than retroactive immunity. Judicial review, minimization procedures, etc.
Yeah.
Like Cuber.
i like yer style. don’t hold back on my account. heh.
The criminals are the government. It is now called Bush-Cheney & company. They will never accept blame for their criminal deeds but will remain true to the criminal mind - blame the victim. Like good criminals, they loaded the courts with like minds, rewarded corruption, stuffed agencies with appointees who will do their dirty work. Listen to the hearings on the EPA. They are still denying global warming and stating some scientists disagree with the global warming findings.
Holy f*ck, this is so cool:
I’m running C-SPAN2 in one window, and playing some really wonderful and uplifting music in another, so instead of just Senatorial yakking, it’s like a movie with an inspiring soundtrack. I am *soooo* stoked now.
Sorry if everyone else knows to do that, the Hitchcock comments made we want to mention it. Though even Hitch always had an unexpected twist at the end…. ;-)
*BELIEVE!*
Christys’: FISA Fundamentals: “Trust Us” Does Not Cut It
and Janes’: Senator Edwards, We Need You To Lead
Both front page at Digg, World & Business > Political News
Folks are diggin ‘em.
I called several of the numbers listed here, I used the argument from Greenwalds article that if the Republican congress didn’t give them immunity then why in the world would the Democratic congress? I think this is a great argument.
Also, when I called Sen. Hillary I told she backs Sen. Dodds bill but they didn’t know if she was coming back to vote on it. I said if she couldn’t find the time, I may not find time to vote for her. I said as a Dem running for Prez I expect her to come back and vote for it other wise I would think that as a Pres. she might want to spy on us too.
Don’t care what their outlook is - as long as they are behind bars for the rest of their miserable lives.
at least they are not requiring 60 votes to pass it.
might make it an interesting vote.
shoot. there’s already a new thread. no way am i catching up today… *g*
“I said if she couldn’t find the time, I may not find time to vote for her.” Same here. Said Edwards would get my vote.
Oh please don’t make fun of the old timer Massachussetts accent.
I’m doing the same.
These republicans are execrable. They obviously have their marching orders from Cheney and his minions are shamelessly doing his bidding.
This is a great idea!
