While a few dozen Iraqi deaths a day is somehow hailed as progress and while that occupation's financial costs spiral ever upward, the other place -- the generally bi-partisan Afghanistan occupation continues to limp along to its inevitable conclusion -- failure.
For the past several months we have been hearing that NATO is winning, that the insurgency is running out of steam. Each suicide attack is a last gasp, a sign that the Taliban are becoming desperate.
As the enemy melts away only to regroup, we are expected to believe that this time, surely, they will stay put in their hideouts. The head of the Afghan National Security Directorate described the Serena attack as a sign of the Taliban’s weakness. “An enemy that cannot hold territory, an enemy that has no support among the people, has no other means than suicide bombing,” the security chief, Amrullah Saleh, told assembled reporters.
But those of us who have covered the steady decline of hope in Afghanistan over the past three years know where the relative strength lies.
Not with the central government, whose head, Hamid Karzai, has largely lost the respect of his people with his increasingly bizarre behavior: weeping at the plight of children in Kandahar, begging the Taliban to send him their address, confessing that he is powerless to control the warlords, auctioning off his silken robe to feed widows and orphans.
Not with the foreign troops, who have been unable to provide security or usher in the development that Afghanistan so desperately needs. Civilian casualties, often hushed up or denied, have made NATO a curse in some parts of the country.
Not with the international assistance community, with its misguided counter-narcotics policies, high-priced consultants and wasteful practices. Out of the billions that have supposedly come into the country, only a trickle has been used to good effect.
The Taliban, under whose brutal regime Afghanistan became an international pariah, are steadily regaining ground. Even those who deplore their harsh rules and capricious behavior welcome the illusion of security they bring in their wake.
Forget several months, that's pretty much the story of Afghanistan for the last four plus years. It is the story ever since Iraq became the "Central front in the War of Bush's biggest Screwups".

Morning everyone:
Two bits of news:
NPR had something about the Pentagon! (not state department) trying do cram down an “Understanding” (meaning treaty) that would keep US troops/bases in Iraq 4-ever.
All over the web Nadler (NY -city) is the one who is stopping Impeachment (what is that about? AIP*C?
Mornin’ all!
great…well he can pack up his office, and get the hell out too….we do have a constitution, rare in this world, forgotten by our congresscritterz…little vassals all
On the same program the person interviewed also said that the next president would be bound by any “treaty” worked out with the “government” of Iraq as all treaties continued one administration to the next. Oh really!!! What about Kyoto. I do not think that any agreement made by this bunch of traitorous bozos should be accepted by any other administration.
Winning what?
The US had inserted itself into two countries and this is not going to go down with enough of the people such that they will fight back, push back and do whatever it takes to get the US military out of their land. It is a simple as that.
Who are these people who want us out? They are all sorts including so called “terrorists” who despise the US polices as well a normal people whose lives have been ruined by the occupation and bombing.
We picked a fight in someone’s home and we think there is something to win?
We still have a constitution? Not if the Dems continue to pretend it is written in invisible ink. I think you said down stairs how disappointed you are in Pelosi as our first woman leader. Amen, and then some.
Here is info for the AI*AC representative.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler
2334 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
Tel. 202-225-5635
NY Tel. 212-367-7350
we need to STOP stealing their resources, and killingoff their future generations
and the president was warned presicely of these results as well, as we are told by his own aid under oath, richard clarke, the president was informed in no uncertain terms he would be opening the gates of hell if he diverted attention from afghanistan into Iraq
this is all deliberate
i really am not SAD anymore…im enraged
imo….i think this needs to be done en masse….one or two calls will not be taken seriously…time is running out for us and soon..THE PARDONS WILL BEGIN …retroactively of course
Chimpy was spoken directly to by GAWD and he was told to go get the muslimterrorists in Afganistan. He was surprised to later find out that Afganistan is not a city in Iraq.
Sorry to go OT so early in the thread, but I just found this poll from CSPAN and Zogby:
Democrats – South Carolina
1/21-23 1/20-22
Obama 39 43
Clinton 24 25
Edwards 19 15
With the margin of error at 3.4%, by my math, that puts Edwards in a tie with Clinton. I find this encouraging.

And today in NYT Bush is tryin to push through another Justice Dept pro-torture tool. So the Dems are saying, we want to bend over backwards to help the Preznit try to sort out the economic mess he and his idiot corrupt & crony Greenspan were responsible for. And what does the Preznit do in response? Push them for more, deeper, crap. The Dems are idiots.
The Afghanistan invasion was as bad as the Iraq one, but it appeared to have some merit because we were led to believe that OBL had done 9.11 and he was the hidden partner in the Taliban government so we had the excuse to invade another sovereign nation. WRONG.
Even the CIA will not state that OBL was part of 9.11. So the case to invade is not there.
It was all about giving the MIC a new enemy for decades of wealth transfer once the USSR decided to go capitalist.
morning!
i’m so behind, even my “good morning” got epu’ed in the last thread.
Good morning Attaturk!
Oh yes, the opium fields and the death squads are doing very well in Afghanistan (and Iraq I may add!) under the leadership of the Bush Regime. Welcome to the 1980’s!
Hi stranger. Welcome back. We’ve been missing you.
they are NOT idiots
(hold your ears)
THEY ARE HIS PARTNERS (in crime)
The dems are played like fiddle by this administration and the Dems don’t get it.
FIGHT. close the government down if you have to.
Get real… the world is at stake.
woooooooo hoooooooooooo wb Selise!
The CIA/bushco needs the opium money to continue their assassinations, coups etc.
the dems obviously are VERY comfortable…EXACTLY with the way things are…have you seen ANY contempt of CONGRESS hearings?
thanks bilbo. only a short break while the primaries dominate the blogosphere. ES mailed me yesterday to warn me that today was FISA day. getting ready to make my phone calls and got my new c-span2 cable tv hooked up and hopefully recorded…
And these are the people that Obama says he wants to compromise with! Ain’t gonna happen.
can we do that? i want in!
and chimpy threw ABU under the bus,to quiet the natives, who were restless, thats about it
I forgot about the coups. Maybe Bhutto’s assassination was a taste of one? Could be. Again, welcome to the 1980’s! We’re going back in time now. At some point under the Bush Regime, we women will be wearing long dresses with aprons, bonnets, and will be making our own water buckets (to use to mop the floors with) from the trees our husbands have cut down on our property! Spit.
Rachel and KO,are our only hopes,to press for ACTION,..well i shouldnt say ONLY!
Stop complaining and churn that butter wench!
To say nothing of funding the Repub elections. Anyone wonder how they are going to fund the new campaign with so little in the bank? Other than the AIP*C-linked freedom fighters group (and do we know where their money is coming from really), they are really short of cash.
Big bombing in Mosul.
there we disagree, he kept abu torture for as long as was possible
They have around 12 billion from Iraq.
I argued earlier that the US (Cheney in particular) may have been behind the Bhutto assassination - as payback for Musharaff letting US troops (!) have free access to Pakistan to rout out Al-Quaida there. Everything in the assassination spoke to Black ops. This also was a typical Cheney slap in the face for Condi and her (state’s) attempts at diplomacy here.
WOULD IT NOT be very kewlllll if Rachel gave one of Keiths….personal message chats on IMPEACHMENT for the good of the Republic?
Ah Jeez, how did I forget that?! And, with the Dems giving them billions more of unaccountable funds, the Dems are actually funding the Rethug candidates who will be promoting more ME war. Wow. Mine eyes have seen the glory!
oh how horrible
From Juan Cole:
we must STOP the maddness…batshit insane people are leading us over the cliff
And when the CIA recently “found” the Pakistani “culprit” in this assassination - a couple of kids (going against, as I recall Scottland Yard) I thought, how appropriate.
And NYT is saying today, surge working? not so much because the Iraqi’s seem bent on killing each other.
does ANY body believe this tripe anymore?
ALL OUR HARD EARNED DOLLARS are going to sustain the LIES and CRIMES of very few rich old men
That was so pathetic, almost laughable if it weren’t so sad.
oh but last week on NEWSHOUR Mark Shield s in his loudest voice ever proclaimed the SURGE a huge success!!! for real ,i heard him
Some mornings I shake a little before reading Juan Cole’s blog just because of possible lead stories like this one.
Just noticed an oops- in a hurry & left JC’s 2nd header on Dems in the snip…
Alas, I think alot of people do. But I would hope people increasingly would be willing to speak out, but MSM is even worse than before (look at Air America, even) slowly they are putting in more conservative people (There is nothin of merit in the AM) and XM has replaced Hartman at noon with Schulz). Other than the web there is no real means to address this. And, what I really fear is that with the new moves by verizon etc to do sweeps of emails and blogs (austensibly to make sure people are not downloading stuff) and their push against net neutrality certain types of sites will be marginalized or shut down.
i just see NOBODY ,nobody saying enuf….havent seen the old congress critter whos name escapes me now …for ages
Jeez
History ( not that the rethugs know any) tells us that the afgans are ruthless and unrelenting. There is nothing to win. Just ask the Brits and the soviets. Regime change must start here. IMPEACH….Cheney first and then Chimp !
well i guess that kinda spells doom, imo
FWIW now on the News!!!! shows: protecting kids from crime (FEAR! FEAR! FEAR!) and the importance of religion (in the markets, for bringing people together), selling the new techno treats (hairdryers that can be used without hands).
The new mantra: for MSM: NNATT (No News All the Time)
‘morning all - coffee is perking.
362 more days of Bush.
We have all decided it is not worth waking up today (well, some of us). With each day counting, there will be more and more push to make the Bush agenda permanent - internationally and nationally. With each day counting, there will be more and more ways that the Dems can show how well they learned the postures of rolling down and playing dead.
Senator Byrd? He pulls no punches on the ME mess.
I left out Prof. Cole’s parenthetical comment on the Mosul ammo dump blast:
well guess he SAW the light
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/new.....rge101.xml
I sure hope the next congress can roll back everything done in the last 8 years… aside from the death and destruction
Why not?
i meant Murtha…oh we need some NEW blood in DC
alas ,i think it is too profitable!…Dwight Eisenhower called it the military industrial congressional complex
Even the CIA will not state that OBL was part of 9.11. So the case to invade is not there./i>
And OBL is not on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List because “we have no hard evidence that bin Laden was involved in the attacks on the World Trade Centers”.
Also, Afghanistan was scheduled to be attacked anyway, because the Taliban was refusing to allow U.S.-backed Unocal to run an oil pipeline through there, having given the contract to an oil company aligned with another country…
Agreed. Some cleaner, less tainted blood would be great, too.
Yup, and now more than even then. I don’t think Eisenhower never envisioned an armaments company such as GE owning one of the major television stations.
Alway a good morning when Selise enters. Anything to report on the committee front?
MSNBC - Fred Phelps and his gang are planning to demonstrate at Heath Ledger’s funeral - Brokeback Mountain, ya see…
Maybe John Gibson can join them?
Church plans to protest Ledger’s memorial
I also don’t think Eisenhower ever envisioned that a foreign country would play such a determining role in US foreign policy, financially supported by individuals here whose commitment in part lies elsewhere. There were fears then of course that Russia (Marxism, Communism) was becoming a factor in the US - hence the violent and illegal moves to black list those seen to be involved. In many ways the Congress today is no better than Congress then in addressing this issue. (And what in heavens name is Congress doing at this point in particular in going after sports stars for steroids. Priorities much? Nah. Too much to ask.
maybe somebody could give John Gibson a fake slap on the back - and leave a “Kiss Me, I’m Gay” sign on his back first…
Here’s an excellent comment on Gibson’s Heath Ledger rant from yesterday’s thread on TP:
Interesting how, in demonizing Heath Ledger for his role in a “gay-themed” movie, he overlooks an earlier role that may have been more to Gibby’s liking: the young man who gave his life for his country’s freedom in the Mel Gibson historical epic “The Patriot”.
I mean, if an actor’s choice of role makes such a difference to Gibby, shouldn’t Ledger have been given credit for taking on such a patriotic role in a depiction of American history?

“Not with the international assistance community, with its misguided counter-narcotics policies, high-priced consultants and wasteful practices. Out of the billions that have supposedly come into the country, only a trickle has been used to good effect.”
kinda says it all for me - the rank incompetency that fills the “leaders” of the world is shameful to admit to as a human being. Are we that stupid and greedy and so filled with our own inflated self-beliefs that we don’t recognize our limitations? Have no idea why I just asked that, I already know the answer. Judy Miller was “proved f’in right!” and Middle America (centrist) is angry.
How ironic that Russia is rising again, buoyed by it’s energy reserves.
Will we be borrowing from and begging them for some help?
Hey,
We’re competent at dropping smart bombs!
Christy is upstairs with a call to FISA action!
