In case you didn’t know, the Surge Worked and We Won.
A suicide bomber blew himself up in front of a high school north of Baghdad on Tuesday, wounding 22 people including teachers and students arriving for the beginning of the school day…U.S. commanders credit anti-al-Qaida fighters from Sunni groups, a six-month cease-fire by a Shiite militia and the dispatch of 30,000 additional U.S. soldiers last year for the reduction in violence. But there has been an uptick in high-profile bombings in recent weeks, suggesting al-Qaida remains a potent threat.
…
On Monday, a suicide bomber apparently targeting a senior security official blew himself up inside a funeral tent, killing 18 people in Hajaj, a village about midway along the nearly 20 miles between Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit and the oil hub of Beiji, 155 miles north of Baghdad.
…
The attack comes one day after a 15-year-old suicide bomber walked into a party carrying a box of chocolates and detonated hidden explosives, killing himself, his cousin — a Sunni fighter working with U.S. and Iraqi forces — and four others.
I wonder what Proconsul Petraeus’ military strategy is for dealing with teenage suicide bombers bearing candy?
Meanwhile, a military spokeswoman said a soldier killed over the weekend south of Baghdad was the first American casualty in a roadside bomb attack on the newly introduced, heavily armored MRAP, or Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected vehicle.
After 5 years, our men and women are still getting blown up by IEDs. No end in sight.

Blue Texan!
Good Morning!
Woohoo we won!
It’s criminal our people didn’t have those vehicles years ago when they were begging for them.
A lot of tore up people resulted in senior managementy dragging their feet.
Bah.
You go to war with the army you have.
i have a SURGE in my tummy, must hit the WC
Meanwhile, Petraeus might be rotated to NATO…
tell EDWARDS…it is NEVER honorable to be a QUITTER!
rotated to NEPTUNE would be safer for the world at large…he is another itty bitty Napolean
Hi friends on Facebook:
I forwarded to you all a photo of a kid peeing on the head of a soldier (presumably US) posing for a shot (so to speak) in I presume Iraq…
I’ll be so nice to have a dem in office so we just bomb the shit outta iraq instead of using troops as IED fodder :/
The surge is working because we’re entered a target poor environment. The ethnic cleansing (That’s what we called it in Bosnia) is complete, there are no Sunni’s left in Shiite areas to shoot at and vice versa.
IMO the Shiites were better off under Saddam than the Sunni’s are under us.
Iraq, like it or not, is America’s mess. Yeah, we can blame Bush, but he acted as our leader (*spit*) and now our grandchildren will still be cleaning up the mess long after we’re gone.
Let’s hope he doesn’t get an excuse to hit Iran, his comments in Israel indicate that he doesn’t trust the NIE and still wants to hit.
Boxturtle (I hope one day to have to deal with the embarassment of seeing a former US president indicted by the World Court)
Good morning everyone :)
Wow, bumpy day at wall street, I hope it doesn’t get as bad as it seems to be going..
Completely OT, but some one (on another thread) was wondering why Bush/family would be buying land in Paraguay? Apparently not only the property on top of a huge fresh water aquafeir(?), but there may be Oil business there too.
‘(Pantera Petroleum”) is pleased to announce it has signed an exclusive share purchase agreement to acquire up to 85% of two companies that have 100% ownership rights in five concessions representing approximately 16,000 square kilometers in Paraguay in the Chaco Basin, a well established hydrocarbon area where oil and gas has been produced in Bolivia since the 1920’s. These five concessions represent combined potential reserves of 6.7 trillion standard cubic feet equivalent (”TCFE”) of gas or 1100 million barrels of oil.’

Jackie, you just hit on my most favoritest conspiracy theory!
Happy morning to you then :) :)
Wolfie says McCain says the surge is working. I think Lieberman would agree.
That sounds an awful lot like the republican party line.
no matter what the failure, no matter how much damage is done, this minsitration “retroactively” changes the goals to tell everyone they were successfull
Juan Cole will keep you up to speed on current events in Iraq. IIRC, sometimes his website is shown in the blogroll here. All Bushco spun propaganda is all you’ll get in the MSM. The Surge reminds me of a guy I knew named Sergio. We called him Serge. They have about equal context to what is going on in Iraq.
It’s odd that no one from Bush’s family is willing to serve in his wars. Perhaps it’s time to stop viewing them as promilitary just because one of them served in World War II.
It is tragic that the media so fears Fox News that they will not even ask the questions that need asking, especially the follow up ones when they are so obviously being spun.
/snark
If you ascribe to the theory that the MSM is not just lazy, but complicit, you could appreciate the reasons for this tragedy.
Raven, Media = Republican party line. You tell me, what’s the difference?
And saddlyyes, Edwards doesn’t need to be told…he’s shown over and over he understands. He’s been in David vs. Goliath challenges all his life. It’s the throughline of his legal career. The throughline of his life.
Fresh food for thought over at my place today about 40 Years in the Wilderness.
I recommend this article by conservative history prfessor Andrew Bracevich from Sunday’s WaPo: http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..inionsbox1
Well, there’s a cheery thought. Remember Pogo’s oft-quoted, “We have met the enemy and it is us” (rough translation).
Our nephew just completed Marine basic training. His mother is a Christian righter. His father and grandfather were career military. And we must watch and wait for him to become fodder in George’s war. What’s wrong with this PICTURE??? Sorry. Got a little exercised there.
man, I would love there to be a law that you are not allowed to vote for war unless you have skin
in the game
don’t kid yourself, this is not fear of fox, it’s promoting only those strategies that help the corporate owners and the corporate sponsors
and the strategies that promote lawmakers that will do what they say

Wolf Blitzer asked the worst question: Rangel says black voters shouldn’t vote for you (Obama) cause it makes them feel good, but because it’s good for the nation.
Er Wolf assumes everyone’s voting according to race and gender?

Even when they have the answers, e.g., who smeared McCain in SC in 2000, they refuse to publishe them if they reflect negatively on Bush. See this by Glenzilla from yesterday.
i worked in a blood bank once…it takes about 20 to 30 pts of whole donor blood to stabilize a gunshot wound…PEOPLE NEED TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM on a sat. nite in the inner city….THEY HAVE NO BLOODY IDEA!
Just a friendly reminder folks: In the comments at FDL, please don’t suggest harm or acts of violence towards people, even in jest. Thanks!
Brilliant!
of course,i shall be very sad if that happens/
Well, see, we aren’t even allowed to view military caskets, so what’s the likelihood we’ll ever be “treated” to the full magilla?!
You know, you really ought to write a detailed article about this. I’m seirous. It’s so easy for Congress critters ‘r us to wax theoretical about blood and guts.
Meanwhile, Condi spews some more empty words:

It’d be great to have a law requiring the President’s eligible relatives serve if that President starts military actions. It’s not like they’ll be on the front lines, anyway. They’ll get the celebrity treatment, but at least they’d be serving.

A couple years ago, IIRC, I saw a claim by Juan Cole that Al Qaeda won’t last a month in Iraq once we leave, i.e., that the locals would immediately drive them out. A couple weeks ago I googled all over for it. Do you recall such a thing?
Condi continues her campaign to cement her legacy as worst sec’y of state ever.
Great article by Glenn Greenwald. He nailed every one of those so called journalists on the McCain smear (not perpetrated by Bush and Rove) but that occurred out of thin air.
You quit and restart your browser lately?
javascript tends towards buggy the longer you have the browser open.
they weren’t there before we occupied the country but I kind of doubt they will dissapear if we leave
al qaeda is now a generic term they use whenever they want to claim our country faces insurgents against us, these “enemies” are all al qaeda as far as this adminsitration is concerned
Excellent, wigwam. Thanks.
John McCain says we should stay in Iraq for 100 years, if that’s what it takes.
On Saturday, 300 pounds of fertilizer and a detonator defeated a $1.5 armored vehicle in an area onto which 100,000 pounds of high explosive had been recently precision-delivered.
“The U.S. dilemma remains unchanged: continue to pour lives and money into Iraq with no end in sight, or cut our losses and deal with the consequences of failure.”
I’m afraid we’re gonna be pouring in Iraq for a long, long time.
she is also in the running for worst human being imo…13 level hell,Dante
I’m sorry wigwam, it doesn’t ring any bells
ALQUAIDA = Goldstein=boogeyman= THE OTHER
I’m sorry but “Never Give Up”, there are times when you should. That kind of thinking kept us in Vietnam for years after we should have di di maued.
That use of the passive voice is the sort of thing I try to notice. In fact, any use of the passive voice sort of sets off my shit detector. But I completely missed that particular obscuring of agency.

Re: Condi Rice: This NYTimes article in 2000 is quite laughable in hindsight:
Ny bold.
The NY Times got it wrong. Rice was an expert on the Soviet Union, not Russia. Ws, I said. Two different countries. He expertise is now very very useless.
That’s what YOU are talking about.
There is great determination to stay in Iraq so that Multinational (American) Oil companies can extract and sell Iraqi oil. The Military funded by our tax dollars is being used to protect the oil companies’ profit motives. A key element of fascism (that is often overlooked) is the collusion of government with big business.
That’s where the Bush family has an entire wing reserved for them.
I’m having some difficulty determining whether those who think we can “win” a clusterfuck that belongs to a dozen other factions that have nothing to do with us, are dumb as shit, just pretending they’re dumb as shit or think their listeners are dumb as shit.
yes,…not giving up on a lost war …is just stoooopit imo
where they will meet Saint Ronnie
Yes, my friend. The java link is working now. It has its own mind…
must be feline
lol, yeah, javascript has a mind of it’s own :)
One must make the distinction between the self-delusional stubborn never change course…that would be BushCo/Vietnam Redux.
Or the paladin on a righteous quest. Who is willing to risk all to see that quest through. That’s the never give up I’m talkin’ about.
me too,well said
OT–
This might help. But who knows?
Yep. Aspects of which might be unknown to itself…We need to psychoanalyze it…*g*
I love to play poker against people who “stay the course” throwing good money after bad. It give me a warm feeling to see their determination, their persistence, the dedication to the cause, their courage, their hope. They don’t want the dollars they’ve lost already to have been lost in vain. So by god they go down fighting.
soon they will pay banks to take dollars instead of euros
last nite the PUNDITZ said Edwards, should do the HONORABLE ,thing ,and quit
OK, I give up! :)
Exactly. Her expertise is now very useless. The USSR no longer exists. Russia and its neighbors exist as a states run by splintered elements of the KGB and m*fia-styled chieftains.
Condi’s jargon is ridiculous on its face. The US is paying Musharraf billions (a military dictator who overthrew the previous government) to keep things democratic in Pakistan.
lol! Now that is a debugger I’d like to see! :)
What risks are being taken by Bush in his quest? He works out daily and goes to bed early. His family doesn’t even pretend to serve.
Staying the course is the only honorable alternative, if you’re a Republican.
Quitting is the honorable thing to do, if you’re a democrat.

Dear Senator Edwards:
It was good meeting with you yesterday and discussing my father’s legacy. On the day when the nation will honor my father, I wanted to follow up with a personal note.
There has been, and will continue to be, a lot of back and forth in the political arena over my father’s legacy. It is a commentary on the breadth and depth of his impact that so many people want to claim his legacy. I am concerned that we do not blur the lines and obscure the truth about what he stood for: speaking up for justice for those who have no voice.
I appreciate that on the major issues of health care, the environment, and the economy, you have framed the issues for what they are – a struggle for justice. And, you have almost single-handedly made poverty an issue in this election.
You know as well as anyone that the 37 million people living in poverty have no voice in our system. They don’t have lobbyists in Washington and they don’t get to go to lunch with members of Congress. Speaking up for them is not politically convenient. But, it is the right thing to do.
I am disturbed by how little attention the topic of economic justice has received during this campaign. I want to challenge all candidates to follow your lead, and speak up loudly and forcefully on the issue of economic justice in America.
From our conversation yesterday, I know this is personal for you. I know you know what it means to come from nothing. I know you know what it means to get the opportunities you need to build a better life. And, I know you know that injustice is alive and well in America, because millions of people will never get the same opportunities you had.
I believe that now, more than ever, we need a leader who wakes up every morning with the knowledge of that injustice in the forefront of their minds, and who knows that when we commit ourselves to a cause as a nation, we can make major strides in our own lifetimes. My father was not driven by an illusory vision of a perfect society. He was driven by the certain knowledge that when people of good faith and strong principles commit to making things better, we can change hearts, we can change minds, and we can change lives.
So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father’s words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud.
Sincerely,
Martin L. King, III
I play poker, it’s really incredible how committed a person becomes to money that they put in the middle
here’s a great story all poker players will enjoy;
I’m at a 20-40 stud game, the low card is to my right with a 6 of clubs
he doesn’t know he’s low and he folds, the dealer gives him his cards back and tells him he’s the force
I fold which isn’t important, what is important is the betting was capped before it got back to the low card who wanted to fold instead of putting in 5 dollars, but since he was forced to pay for 5, he put in 60 dollars more when it came to him at the end of the betting round
I’m sure all poker players have a similar story to tell
NPR said this morning that all the republican contenders are doing well and are still viable.
wow, nice letter!
Re: useless expertise:
The current Russia is definitely a different country from the one that was part of the Soviet Union. A lot of people don’t realize this distinction. And I mean a LOT.
Yet if Johnson’s domestic reforms owed a debt to his own identification with the disenfranchised, Mr. Dallek also suggests that his tragic mishandling of Vietnam stemmed from his need to see the war as a personal test of his judgment. Even as Johnson’s ’’lifelong compulsion to be the best, to dominate and win’’ made him reluctant to become ’’the first American President to lose a war,’’ his deep-seated insecurities (combined with his competitive mistrust of Robert F. Kennedy) compelled him to demonize critics of his Vietnam policy and cut off reasoned debate.
’’Though no one can say with certainty what Johnson’s fundamental motives were, including Johnson himself,’’ Mr. Dallek writes, ’’it is not too much of a stretch to conclude that the Johnson personality was inhibiting him from a more realistic and sensible resolution of a war policy that seemed certain to lead to more losses, more domestic divisions and greater limitations on his capacity to lead at home and abroad.’
well for them, not well in general, I don’t think there’s anything on the planet that will give us a republican president next cycle
except of course republican voting machines or suspension of our consitution and elections by the standing administration
well kids!!!!MISSION IS ACCOMPLISHED
http://money.cnn.com/news/news…..RTUNE5.htm
Thnaks for this. This is exactly why I’m supporting this guy. I hope some kinda miracle happens. Obama and Hillary can continue to snipe at each other. The problem is I hope they don’t take the Dem Party down with them.
have i mentioned lately how much i hate these people? ( zillionaire pundits like Beck etc)
OT – MSNBC says HRC to get endorsement of United Farmworkers Union today.
Im meant Thanks at 91…
Sorry for slow response — got the boot and had to log in again. Was it something I said? Is it because I have a very bad attitude about Republicans? Is it because . . . oh, never mind. *g*
I do wish it. Will I be able to stomach it? Probably not. Do I need to? Yup. Then we can send it to our Congress critters (every dang one of ‘em, more than once if need be — need is great!)
Even Rudy (who won’t even attempt to caucus for fear of getting his as handed to him like Ded Fred) was portrayed on NPR as being equal to the other 3 republican front runners – Robo Rom, McCain and Huckleberry.
Further, NPR played Huckabee’s Fair Tax soundbyte (to replace the IRS with a national sales tax). Naturally, there was no discussion regarding the merits of the fairness of the fair tax.
yes,can you imagine if they really had a VIABLE canidate…hahaha, like chimp hahahahaha
Big f*cking deal…Excuse me, I’m really pissed at this woman right now…
You seem somewhat stressed this morning and the ALL CAPS are hard to take.
I keep remembering the paintings of GWashington leading his troops. Okay. He wasn’t prez yet, but he was out there, visible, and leading. And every time he screwed up, he got up and tried to make it right. Why? Because (ready for this?) he was a patriot!!! Well, probably not. I don’t recall seeing a little flag pin on his macho chest.
sorry,im just,ya know…OUTRAGED!
Yep. Me too. Maybe because of last night at Myrtle Beach? Last Night at Myrtle Beach…sounds like a song.
Breaking: Biodun receives the Grumpy Commentwriters Union endorsement.

Quitting is the honorable Dem thing? Ah. Which is why Gore and Kerry lost. They gave up and did the honorable thing. Hmmmmm . . . . .
That’s true. I’m suprised the Republics didn’t try to rename everything named after him by naming it after Reagan. He wore lapel pins.
go down fighting John….we gotchour back….those lilly livered sap sukkerzzzzz
it’s because Edwards is running that Hillary and oboma take on their more progressive platform
Edwards needs to stay as long as possible in order for us to get commitments from these two
and in the end, he can still win and will win if the press would cover him
WAR is a racket. It always has been.
It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.
A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small “inside” group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.
In the World War [I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows.
How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them parried a bayonet thrust of an enemy? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?
Out of war nations acquire additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few – the selfsame few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill.
And what is this bill?
This bill renders a horrible accounting. Newly placed gravestones. Mangled bodies. Shattered minds. Broken hearts and homes. Economic instability. Depression and all its attendant miseries. Back-breaking taxation for generations and generations.
LOL!
Never has the Alfred E Newman comparison been more appropriate then when examining Shrub’s relationship to the military.
No wonder every retired general thinks he is the biggest as-h-le on the planet.
Actually Shrub is Alfred E Newman if he worked for the phone company
only ONE difference i can see…Alf was funny…chimp just EVIL like a troll under the bridge
Edwards is the next best thing to Gore. And you’re absolutely right about his elevating the dialogue — to the extent that shouting and blaming and finger-pointing and accusing and snarking and baiting is “dialogue.”
The Gray Lady this morning, in an expose on the noncandidate:
Punch drunk.
OT:
ACLU is asking for help to petition Reid. Please sign the petition and get Harry to quit cowering to Bush and the Telco’s
we need to federalize all war profits to pay the bill incurred
boy, a platform like that would be great, dangerous for the person proposing the platform, but that is what we need
Out of war nations acquire additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few – the selfsame few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill.
Smedley was right. The public pays for the war, big contractors make billions, as the land and oil go to the oil companies.
A little more on the pugilist:
(Same linky as my 114.)
he should do the HONORABLE thing imo…QUIT!
YUP!
Smedly Butler ,the most decorated General ever, said these things in the 30s another war profiteer was one of the suspects…Presscot Bush ,hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
He sure fought hard to insure that the firefighters got the worst radios. IIRC, Rudy fought hard to turn $400,000 into 4 million for the radio bill.
Rudy as a boxer. Its f**king laughable. Now Rudy as a stud muffin, perhaps.
OUR media doing its job!!!
http://www.prisonplanet.com/ar…..stcoup.htm
federalizing war profits makes too much sense.
and 3000 are dead
Rudy could be an actor. He’s a classic villain. Bring in Kerrick as a goon…
good retort to the draft question tho

Re: my 130: I forgot this part; it’s easy to see why:
Did someone say Smedley?
http://www.warisaracket.com/
This links to the entire book. It’s short so a quick read if anyone’s interested (please pass it on). Yep, 1935 he wrote this after years of warning about war profiteers. Generals Butler, Eisenhower, and many others for years and years have been sounding the alarm bells about these people, yet the sheeple spend hours debating he said/she said’s in politics and sports (all for entertainment, but it’s about balance).
Some understand and are doing something about it, like future (I think?) Blue America candidate here:
http://www.graysonforcongress.com/
Cindy Sheehan has been promoting General Butler and “War Is a Racket” during her campaign, even telling Tweety Matthews that he needs to read it. You think Pelosi has read it or Eisenhower’s speech?
http://cindyforcongress.com/
exactly. Bush takes none. Which is why his quest is not righteous.
Very true.
Actually, it’s “Alfred E. Neuman”. Just being picky.
• SURGE, in GENERAL, WARNING to W: Quitting Smirking Now Greatly Reduces Serious Risks to the Health of the Nation
707!
OT but weird and important. I haven’t read all of the comments so hope this hasn’t already come up.
I wonder why Rohrabacher would be against this bill? I am glad but suspicious.
“It’s not often that we agree with Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach. But he was right on target in voting against an inflammatory bill by Rep. Jane Harman, D-El Segundo, on “violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism.” This bill (HR1955/S1959) whizzed through the House 404-6 and awaits action in the Senate.
Harman’s bill would create a new national commission and yet another university-based Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence for $22 million. Rohrabacher believes that money would be better spent on existing law enforcement efforts to counter terrorism.
He’s absolutely right, but his objections don’t go far enough.”
http://www.sacbee.com/editorials/story/650840.html
hey, egregious. sneaking in a workday actually, it should more appropriately read:
…Greatly Reduces Serious Risks to the Health of the Nation
Morton Kondracke sez it’s working.
So, there.
I’ve had dengue and malaria (fortunately not at the same time) and knowest whereof you speak. Except that either will certainly make you into a “weak pussy”.
Underlyng the gist of this post is that we’ve sadly all become desenstitized to this awful war. Illegalities (send them all to The Haugue) aside, just imagine how we would have felt if, back in the spring of ‘03, we opened up the paper and read about a sucide bomber in a school that killed 22 students. Unless we start getting real coverage on the war instead of focusing on what has become an American Idol race for the presidency thanks to the MSM bobbleheads, we’re never going to get out of there. Think about it, every time there is violence over there it involves exploding brains and guts, either American or Iraqi. The thing MSM is most guilty of is sanitizing this war from the very start. I imagine we’ll get a bump in war coverage from the MSM when we hit 4000 (Four thousand!) but that will be about it. Makes me ill.
I think you are forgetting that we are not supposed to ask questions. We are at war, thus it is the best war ever and to even doubt that aloud is to endanger freedom in the most fundamental way.
