Eric Boehlert has a fine, carefully researched piece up at Media Matters documenting how a comment made by Rachael Maddow on the night of the New Hampshire primary made its way through the blogosphere and ended with Matthews apologizing for the strange sexist ramblings about Hilary Clinton that may in fact have contributed to her victory there.
It’s characteristic of Boehlert’s work, as Eric has taken years to really try and understand the blogospheric counter-narrative, how it gets constructed and how it travels. His book Lapdogs is indispensable to anyone trying to puzzle their way through the blogs.
So why oh why do people keep asking Matt Bai to speak about the blogosphere? His truly awful book was a sales disaster…and deservedly so. Matt Bai doesn’t actually do research, Matt Bai just finds opportunities to talk about his preconceived notions of a blogosphere that doesn’t exist. Well, that and Matt Bai.
Take, for instance, the recent PBS documentary (featuring Matt Stoller) on the Lieberman/Lamont and Donna Edwards races (timestamp 11:00):
Hinajosa: [Al] Wynn actually has gotten very high approval ratings from some kind of grass roots organizations. NARAL for example, civil rights… So people would say well "he looks like a good Democrat."
I thought my head was going to explode. Surely anyone who has spent even a day in the blogs knows what a battle we wage against groups like NARAL who rubber stamp establishment people like Joe "Short Ride" Lieberman, and how they told their members to thank him for his vote that put Samuel Alito on the bench. Good lord, there have to be a gazillion blog posts about how these interest organizations have long ago forgotten what they were there for and are a huge part of the problem progressives face in Washington DC, sucking up all the money and enabling establishment hacks like Wynn against people like Donna who would actually fight for their cause.
Hell, I wouldn’t even expect Bai to know about the vote Wynn took with Republicans to allow people who blow up abortion clinics to escape legal judgments by declaring bankruptcy, something Donna Edwards would never have done. (Though it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect that someone passing themselves off as an "expert" might.)
Instead, this is Bai’s answer:
Bai: Well ideology here is very hard to parse out.
Check the look on his face. He has absolutely no idea what to say, so he reaches for his trusty axe and starts grinding:
Bai: These progressives are focused on a method of governing, that is, are you working with Republicans or are you voting the party line every time are you stopping everything Republicans tried to do or are you making compromises and if you tried to work out an agreement, or if you voted outside the party ranks they consider that a betrayal.
Because that’s Bai’s personal thesis, which has absolutely nothing to do with the question he’s been asked. His tired mantra doesn’t even make any sense on the face of it. Progressives in the blogosphere battle the Democrats all the time, encouraging legislators to break away from what the party brahmins are trying to enforce. We have values, things that are important to us, strong ideologies that we fight for. What we get pissed off about is when the party doesn’t hold its ranks together to support those values, and that usually starts with leadership. But Bai is always peddling this stupid assertion that things would just get better if only we’d let Democrats be free to "work out an agreement." Who exactly does he suppose is going to work with you toward children’s health care or ending the war? The Republicans?
Bai’s narcissistic attempts to circle the conversation back around to his favorite subject, "and now a little more about Matt Bai," are always tedious and guaranteed to be insight-free.
When Eric Boehlert is available, who truly does know what he’s talking about, why would anybody bother?

Jane!
Jane!
hi jane!!
I read Lapdogs. It was great. But sickening to see what has become of our media.
Eric just isn’t considered to be one of the kewl kids like Bai is. Why, even his last name is spelled kewl so he must be kewl!
Jane, if you’d only be a little more direct — you know, say what you think and quit hiding your ideology — then perhaps it would help poor Matt with his parsing.
Is anyone here a Kewl Kid? Maybe they could explain to me what’s so great about it.
Jane’s Edwards post is now on the front page of Digg due to the high number of recommends.
If you would like to see this post do likewise, digg this post.
Perhaps — just perhaps — the narrative Matt Bai peddles goes better with the narrative TradMed peddles about the blogs. Maybe — just maybe — TradMed doesn’t really want to explain the blogs and how we work. Could it be that TradMed’s real interest is in pigeonholing the blogs? In marginalizing our role? In minimizing our influence?
Because that’s what Matt Bai does, whenever he’s asked. Funny, that.
Great post, Jane. Hope to see more Eric out there. But I’m not holding my breath.
The bolded text makes the answer to your question clear: Matt’s just angling to get David Brooks’ job when he’s gone. Today it’s the blogosphere, tomorrow the world.
Good evening all-Bai is evidently neither informing or entertaining, so my guess is he is running interference.
Damn is it good to be back!!!
But Matt isn’t one of us and he works for the NYT so he must be impartial and an expert on who we are and what we stand for. /s
Although I am not a Kewl Kid, I did hear Matt Bai speak on a panel at YearlyKos I. I was not impressed. The only think I can remember him saying was that he had never met a cocktail weenie.
Nice to see you Ron.
Nice to have you back, ronD
sorry…the only thing I can remember him saying…
Bai: These progressives are focused on a method of governing, that is, are you working with Republicans or are you voting the party line every time are you stopping everything Republicans tried to do or are you making compromises and if you tried to work out an agreement, or if you voted outside the party ranks they consider that a betrayal.
That’s one sentence? Oral diahrrea.
working on that
Be a good time to buy Bai stock–buy it for what it’s worth and sell it for what it thinks it’s worth.
That Jane Hamsher, too subtle by half
Left blogosphere to Matt: Bye bye, Bai

good night!
Reminds me of the line Christopher Lloyde has in One Flew Over the Cookoo’s Nest. About Jack Dunphy who has told Mr. Harding about what really happened to McMurphy and that he didn’t escape as rumor had it:
“Matt Bai’s fulla shit!”
That can only mean he averts his gaze from mirrors.
bye bye bai sounds so so so capitalist when verbalized
‘Night, Cassie.
And the fact is the Dems did work with a lot of Republicans on SCHIPA but a few dead-enders scuttled it.
Matt Bai is fulla shit!
He seemed to be trying to make the argument that because he had [allegedly] never been to a D.C. Beltway Cocktail Party, and because he was a member of the Media, therefore the blogosphere’s entire critique of the Media for sucking up to the Beltway establishment was without merit.
And by the way, if you haven’t read Eric Boehlert’s Media Matters article, which includes cameo appearances by our own blogmistresses, you really should:
and also:
The entire article is an amazing, and well-deserved, paean to the distaff blogosphere. It was so fun to read about these wonderful women, from Rachel Maddow to Jerilyn Merritt to Pam Spaulding, who are changing the world we inhabit.
My goofball conressman endorsed Williard. Rudy and McCain and Willard have signs sprouting up. Is Jane or anybody commin down. No Democratic game bein’ played but you could see the death of Rudy. Worth the price of air fare.
hey bai: parse this ideology
Didn’t Bai moderate the pres candidate forum at Yearly Kos? Why?
isnt there some deal about dems not advertising in florida? i remember hearing hillary’s team trying to bash obama’s team for an ad that is playing there.
You around Suzanne? I’m not whoring te Giants tonight. Did it all day at work. I’m tired.
Tim Russert is not the only Mockingbird controlled by
Darth Cheney. I am guessing the incompetent, Corporate hack Matt Bai is also controlled by the Government. Mockingbird Matt.
There you are. Yeah. They pledged not to campaign here. You won’t see so much as a bumper sticker. I’m gettying Edwrads t-shirts from the website. I guess Howard Dean will punish me if I wear them before the 29th.
here ya go
RonD!!! Where have you been?
BFL, you’re in FL? Anywhere near Tampa?
(((Loo Hoo)))
Hey! House got struck by lightning in Dec, and cooked most of my hardware and cable.
Hear tell the organizer has a little Matt-crush.
Good grief, RonD. Well, you sure came back just in time for a great article, huh? Victory in the blogosphere!
ouch ouch and ouch
dayam, i start to go through withdrawals after 24 hours of no tubes.
Another long night for the Wall Street Wizards and Plunge Protection Team.
The action in the After-Hours market is negatory. NASDAQ -33 points.
It was almost five weeks-no cable TV or toobz. Now I know where all that time I used to spend reading went.
Wow Heath Ledger is dead. Didn’t know him well but…not a good week for young actors.
Yes. Saw this about 6 EST…may he rest in peace and dignity.
I’m so sad for Heath’s little daughter :-(
On Hardball tonight, Matthews two or three times expressed the opinion that Hillary was overly and unfairly harsh with Obama at the debate, when she mention his working in Reszko’s side-yard. Matthews opined that Obama’s provocation was mild by comparison. When I saw the entire clip on CountDown half an hour later, it was clear that Obama had started it with a hit below the belt. Her rejoinder was effective but too harse.
the Hamsher takedown continues to bring woe to the blagging pontificator. Master Bai will be waking up sore and ache-y come morning. if he hasn’t read this post by then he’ll wonder where the bruises and switchmarks on his flabby arse came from.
Little bit away from Tampa. Not far. I’m closer to the middle of the state, more towards the ocean. The City Beautiful.
what dat?
California health care plan legislative deal fraying around the edges, not looking good
…………..this comment is just a drive-Bai………………….
Wow. Another ‘pup in FL…I’m just S. of Tampa.
A great description of Matt Bai. He masquerades as an independent voice but is really a mouthpiece of the Conventional Beltway Wisdom. He acts like he is tuned into what is going on in the web but endlessly recycles the tired “me professional, you dirty unwashed bloggers” meme of the most prejudiced and least informed segment in newscasting. Media seek out his opinion, not because he has any insight into anything, but because he has made it into the holy sanctum of their Rolodexes.
tis your gold star for not pimping
John Edwards is going to be on Letterman, soon.
I haven’t read Matt Bai’s book, but I did hear him make that comment on the PBS show… and I’m thinking “Boy, he’s pretty clueless to make a comment like that…. unless it was taken well out of context.” Guess I’m kinda glad now that I didn’t take the time to read his book.
spew!!!
*no spoilers for those west coast types please*
but please, let us know if it is worth watching
Hey RonD!
That happened to me a few years ago, and I feel for you.
We on the left coast would rather you don’t describe any blow by blow on Letterman. It is better see it “live”…you taped for the west coast..
Welcome back, RonD! Sorry to hear of current events.
Barbara Comstock BFF and former Thompson partisan Mark Corallo has this to say about Fred08:
Who else is down here? I’ve tried to keep track but haven’t. We had a shitlaod of those nasty people running for president make their way through orlando yesterday. And there will be more and more and more. They were tripping over each other to see who will spend the most on the space program, these good fiscal conservatives were.
I knew that
thank you. i deserve it don’t I?
I talked to a friend today who had been working with the Ca. Labor Fed. and he said that he and most of the other folks from Itsourhealthcare.org had been laid off. He said that the whole process had become unwieldy and imploded.
No Mr. Bai, there is no Santa Claus. Capitulation, centrism and reaching across the aisle has put the US in the predicament it finds itself in today. Endless war, housing foreclosures, recession, gigantic deficit, heathcare crisis, insurance rates and property taxes out of control, degradation of infrastructure, womens’ and workers’ rights under attack, Katrina, Haliburton, Cheney shoots a guy in the face and makes him apologize, admin offical rats out a CIA asset, stock market tanking, complicit media…
Or, he was just a B-list actor that people tried to turn into the second coming of St. Ronnie.
Shit. I gotta see if I can tape it.
Yay! Another loss for Big Insurance (and Nunez’s ego).
Hope it goes over the side soon.

Asian markets are mostly up but have not recovered all the ground they lost yesterday, not to mention the day before. I sort of wonder how long it is going to take the markets to realize that the drop in the Fed rate will have no real effect on the economy.
Yeah and he tells ‘em what they want to hear. His book got a glowing review from the NYT and I was curious how that would affect sales. That day it was doing in the 8000s on Amazon. The next day, it had only risen to like 7000.
For comparison, Glenn Greenwald’s “How Would a Patriot Act,” two years old and with no marketing budget, which had gone all the way to #1, was at 5,300 or something.
Which says to me the only people interested in Bai’s book got their copies for free, and they’re the ones booking Stephanopoulos.
Kuehl is instrumental in stopping Arnold’s proposal, presumably in favor of her plan.
BFL, I don’t know any.
Mary, I’m genuinely sorry to hear of your friend’s plight (and that of all the good folks who were genuinely working for health care for all).
The CA union/Dem honchos who are responsible have a lot to answer for.
Prolly a day or three.

well summed up, hackworth.

I’m in the Daytona Beach area. Take I-4 all the way to the north east.
Yeah, Thompson not only could have done it in his sleep he would have done it in his sleep.
This gets back to something I said in the last thread. Conservatives create a narrative, stick to like glue, and never let facts get in the way of it.
Does this guy listen to what comes out of his own mouth?
I would LOVE to see the leap of logic drawn out on a chalkboard explaining that last statement.
Move over Einstein and gimme that eraser.
oh good – Mary, I was so concerned my “Yay! was insensitive or callous.
now I can join you:

Edwards coming up on Letterman. No spoilers or live-blogging, I promise.
I saw Rachel Maddow’s comment about tweety when she made it. The problem is that she came out a day or two later to make nice with tweety and MSNBC and then get a position on the channel as an analyst. Check out the Daily Howler to get his take.
I’m in Miami for a few days and then will be in Tampa for two. Does that count?
Actually, I think CCMask is in the Miami area. I remember chatting with her about orchid growing awhile back.
Be careful, Gnome! You’ll get sand in your shoes!
Good evening dear friends.

Order is overrated.

as you wish, ma’am
I’ve been a fan of Eric’s for a long time. Ever since he wrote a series in Salon explaining the radio industry consolidation and what role Clear Channel has in the process.
Eric’s book should have gotten coverage all over the media, but it didn’t because they didn’t REALLY want people to know just how lame they really are.
Also he criticized reporters BY name and the media don’t really like that, it just seems too personal (”There but for the grace of god go I” feelings).
And we can’t discount the roll that the Right Wing Media play in book sales about the Media.
Eric doesn’t run with the Right Wing narrative of a LIBERAL bias, so the two groups that could have pushed the book, (talk radio and cable TV) didn’t have him on. He was pointing out the ways that the media failed that was NOT because they were too liberal.
Then when it came time for the legit press to cover the book or talk about it, they decided not to look at it because it would show how messed up they are. Why would they want to do that. For example PBS’s On The Media should have done a segment on the book, but they didn’t since they had their own smug little role to play where they look down their nose at the rest of the media.
So the only place that his book could find an audience would be through the blogs and the internet. We are gettting there, but but we don’t have the same power and TV and Radio yet.
BTW, I talked to Eric when the book first came out to help determine what stories that the regular press MIGHT be willing to tell there were examples of the way the Rove/Huges crowd abused the press. I think a LOT of people should here about the phone calls to the publishers and the swift loss of access that the Rove crew handed out to the media.
Eric had a few stories that I think the media might not have minded telling (like how Cheney kicked the ABC reporter off the VP plane) but those stories would also have shown that the rest of the media didn’t bother to stand behind the ABC reporter and say, “If you are going to kick them off you will have to kick ALL Of us off.” The craven careerism that they exhibited kept them from standing together. And of course the White House knew this and played them off against each other.
Slip down the Humboldt Current to visit me this weekend at this revolutionaries’ ball:

Parking meters eat?
marymc! Did you take the union organizing job, Mary? Orderly and organized??
Our last meet-up was at a county park and pecan tree grove, with a pair of donkeys in attendance. No parking meters.
I have missed you all terribly, yet must go to bed.
Good night, all. The best of all possible tomorrows to you all.
Did I miss something? Did somebody ask what states we all live in?
sleep well rond
Well…dimes and quarters only. They’re fussy eaters.
FunnyD
I think some Floridians were looking for others for some reason, a meet up perhaps. Or to talk about lightening strikes. I’m not sure which.
Good night, RonD.
Without spoiling anything, you West Coasties will enjoy Sen. Edwards on Letterman tonight.
I didn’t take it. They wanted folks to travel out of state for up to a month at a time, work 60 hours a week minimum and start in Colorado in the snow talking your way into people’s houses. If I was 20 or 30ish I would have done it in a New York second. I knew if I did it I would be back in California in a matter of weeks. So, I am still looking. I would love to do the same job in Northern Cal.
The Fed rate cut will effect inflation and deficit spending.
China is raising interest rates and reserves to cut inflation and deficit spending. The Chinese call it sound banking, which our Fed would never stand for.
Speaking of Tweety, here’s another gem:
Though you may be inclined at some point to contact Letterman about a particular matter.
Socialized medicine will go nicely with our socialized military, socialized road system, school system, meat inspection system, National Institute of Health, etc.
And let’s not forget the socialized police and firefighters.
Understandable. I like to look at snow on Christmas cards.

Hey Betsy and all Firepups,
How did it go with Cassie and the new laptop? Well, I hope.
Rather ambiguous ya think?
night hackworth.
christine, Cassie is in love with the laptop. Got it all set up, including the wireless, which was tricky.
g’nite hackworth
haven’t figured out where yet, nahant
We had to resort to begging our college age kids to help us. It turned out that we had FIVE people here on wireless (at one point) about three years ago.
Apparently it’s gonna be a Republican Dog Fight in Florida if yo believe that Rassmussen Poll. He shows Mittens is up ahead with about 25% and McCain and Rudy back at about 20%, Hucky has dropped down to about 13% from actually leading in Florida at 17% for awhile. But the wildcard is Thomson drooping out. He was right behind Huckabee at 12%…and most of the respondants viewed Huck as the most Conservative along with Thomson…though some think that Mitty is in there too. So if many of Freddies support shifts to the Huckster he’s right in there with Mitty.
And it’s even a more volatile explosive kettle of toxins that THAT! 6% Undecided and 12% admit of those that say they support one or another of this nest of vipers say they’ll probably change whatever is left of their minds in the polling booth! Gonna be interesting. I’m pulling for Rudy, Huckabee and Mitt in that order. Rudy for chaos value, Huckabee to get the neocons/paleocons to panic and throw more money at the other candidates…and Mitty…well, because Disney wouldn’t have to develop any complicated animatronics at EPCOT to create a “boxing Republican robots” exhibition.
Next door neighbor set up our wireless. Three levels of security, etc.
Dear Senator Edwards,
I have been a supporter and contributor for some time. I am currently out of work and have offered my services to your campaign. I am not writing to you about that now. Instead, I would like you to join Senator Dodd in being the champion to stop the Gooper FISA bill being presented in the Senate. Challenge Obama and Clinton to join the filibuster and go with them to Washington.
If we cant have impeachment–I agree it is impractical–then lets at least have Democratic presidential candidates who challenge Bush and his woeful administration now.
Why do we need to wait 364 mroe days to have real change. Let’s bring it on now. With you and your colleagues in the campaign for the Democratic nomination taking the lead, we can stop Bush now.
please help.
I’ll tell you, three levels of security sounds great. I asked a friend two years ago to help me, and he added AntiVir and SpyBot. They have helped me a lot. Without neighbors (co-workers) I’d be lost.
*standing on chair clapping*
that is a wonderful letter, peterboy
indeed!
suzanne, come down from that chair.
Just making sure you know that chili and pie will be on the menue
Thank you.

Hey Suz,
On your tower?

yeap, up in the mod tower. i’ve got new nomex curtains and a nifty new sportz zapping button i’ve been waiting to try out
We win… can concentrate again
Anyone talked to you about this issue regarding talking to yourself?
Sox!
Yanks!
Cardinals!
Sharks!
OK, Suz – give her a try…
I know you are either rich or crazy… I will let you guess :>)
I would however say that this is untrue in the Media Matters article
FDL does NOT “normally focus on gay and lesbian issues.”
It’s a “progressive site” and while those topics are normal, they are not the focus of the site. I suspect that gay and lesbian issues ranks somewhere like #7 in the general topical areas discussed. I see more discussions of Iraq, electoral issues, privacy concerns, gender equity, healthcare, media control and bias, the Attorney General scandal, and the Plame-Wilson issue than I do specifically gay and lesbian issues. There might be one every other day – hardly a FOCUS!
Hmmm,
Now nomex curtains are new to me…are they fireproof window treatments? And I do like the sportzapping button.
YIKES! It Burns!
(((nahant))) – good luck!

That makes me want to pound my head into a wall. Trying to convince voters and undo the damage that groups like NARAL do by giving jerks like Lieberman a rubberstamp, is one of the most frustrating, hairpulling things I can think of. It defies description. Twilight zone maybe?
