Remember my referring to the utter bogosity of the conservative antigay crowd trying to label as a "new gay disease" a staph variant, MRSA, that afflicts people in all walks of life, and has for years? Jim Burroway at Box Turtle Bulletin goes deep into this nonsense and not only debunks it, but stakes it out on an anthill:
According to the medical literature — which Diep ought to be well acquainted with — the USA300 variant of MRSA is already widespread in the general population. And gay men, who are in the general population, had little to do with it. If the medical literature is any indication, it’s the “general population” that’s responsible for spreading MRSA into the gay community.
Over the past decade, community-associated MRSA (mostly USA300) has been reported in Atlanta, Albany, Birmingham, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, El Paso, Houston, Las Cruces (NM), Los Angeles, Memphis, Minneapolis, New York, Oakland, and Sacramento, and as well as in the states of Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, Tennessee and Washington. (This list is not complete, by the way). CA-MRSA has infected inmates in jails and prisons and children in day care, as well as American Indians on reservations, rural residents of Southwestern Alaska, and Pacific Islanders of Hawaii.
Internationally, dangerous forms of MRSA have been reported in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands (where one study showed how it can be transmitted in families), New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Uruguay and Western Samoa. Again, this is not a complete list by any means.
All of these outbreaks were among the “general population” and not one was blamed on gay men.
Burroway goes on to show the following:
-- The more than 750 articles published to date almost never bring up homosexual activity; it's simply not a major vector for this disease.
-- What is a major vector? Any form of contact sport, including wrestling and football. MRSA is a big problem among athletes, affecting the USC Trojans, St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins, and Washington Redskins, as well as college and high school programs across the nation. Yet we're not seeing any screaming scare headlines about "the flesh-eating jock disease".
-- In addition to being prevalent in contact sports, MRSA has been found in daycare centers and prisons, on Indian reservations, on military bases, and even a religious community in upstate New York. But nobody's calling for shutting down any of these places.
Burroway then mentions the shockingly sensational way in which this latest smear-in-pseudoscientific-garb was presented to the press and the public, and the utterly predictable way in which the right-wing antigay crowd recited verbatim the same old "gay plague" scripts they've used since 1981. He closes with this reality check:
MRSA is dangerous if left untreated, and while it is resistant to some forms of antibiotics, it’s not resistant to all forms. In some cases, the wound might have to be lanced and drained. Only very rarely is surgery required.
And the best news is that MRSA is easily preventable. Cover any cuts, scrapes or sores, and wash your hands and shower regularly — ordinary soap and water does the trick. And don’t share personal items — toothbrushes, razor blades, sheets and towels and so forth. Preventing its spread is just that easy.
You mean it's as simple as not being a stupid slob? That would explain why we're not seeing most people's flesh fall from their bones as they go about their daily lives.
It’s time we all took a deep breath, calmed down, and learned a few lessons from all this. MRSA is not new, and gays aren’t spreading a new and deadly disease into the “general population.” It’s already been there for decades. If anything, all the evidence indicates that the “general population” has spread MRSA into the Castro and other places.
One of the big ironies is that one of the 'tells' of an Eeeevil Gay Guy is a fondness for things like soap and clean, neat clothing -- because as we all know, Real Men look like slobs and smell like landfills. Yet the hatred of gays is based upon their being 'unclean'. Go figure.
So the first lesson is this: When the media — and especially anti-gay fanatics like Peter LaBarbera and Matt Barber — scream about a new gay plague threatening the “general population,” your first instinct should be to get the facts for yourself. AIDS was passed around for 30-50 years as a heterosexual disease in Africa long before five gay men died in Los Angeles in 1981. And MRSA has been a problem in the general population long before Dr. Diep “discovered” it and hyped the latest festering gay man’s curse.
Which brings us to the second lesson: White-coated “professionals” sometimes carry with them all the baggage of prejudice and biases as anyone else. And “professionals” aren’t always pure in their motives when they speak to the press. Some are just as hungry for publicity as anyone else, and some are just as prone to making unconscionable comments. We’ve come to expect contemptible and scurrilous statements from the likes of LaBarbera, Barber and World Net Daily. They have no qualms about exploiting the suffering of others to score cheap political points, and grossly misrepresenting medical science is their stock and trade. We have no idea whether Dr. Diep shares any of their bigotry or whether he just let his ambition or simple carelessness getting the better of him.
And that, my friends, is that.

ZED?

You got the MRSA zed?
OT: Sorry, but the judge that sentenced Padilla said that because he wasn’t linked to any specific acts of terrorism…he’ll only get 17 years instead of life. Say wha???
I can’t speak to all the learned studies, but I can speak to the fact that, as a medical transcriptionist, I have been VERY familiar with the term MRSA for some years now. I work for ENT physicians and they’ve been seeing it in sinuses and in children’s middle ear infections in the office setting. This is NOT anything new, and it MOST PARTICULARLY is not a “gay” problem. The fact that those knuckle-walking, mouth-breathing throwbacks consider it so is an insult to the rest of thinking humanity. There. Now I feel better. /rant.
OT: Sorry, but the judge that sentenced Padilla said that because he wasn’t linked to any specific acts of terrorism…he’ll only get 17 years instead of life. Say wha???
Thought crime.
OMG… I have been a nurse for over 30 years… MRSA has been in the General population for years…. before HIV & AIDS became an epidemic.
Oh lord.
I’d LOVE to see headlines screaming JOCK DISEASE! JOCK DISEASE!!! EEEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!! COOOTIES!!!!
But we won’t, will we?
No something worse…. the cancer one
Hey, remember this is the bubba-lovin’ Gawd, Gunz and Gaze crowd. Prevention? That’s so 20th century.
You don’t suppose that they’re going to call for a cancellation of the Super Bowl, do you? What would emptywheel do with her famous football trash talk threads?
MRSA
Discovered in 1961….. so it has been in the general population for 45 years world wide. It used to be a hospital based infection which has now moved to a community based which increases its exposure to the wider population.
After they a. tortured him b. Subjected him to years of sensory deprivation c. drove the poor fucker over the edge They give him 17 years. Makes you proud to be American, doesn’t it? I sure am thankful for those Constitutional Rights, they’re really what set us apart from those dictatorships, ya know…
Katymine, just wondering here… Do you think it’s possible that the frenzy to “sanitize” everything has possibly led to the increased resistance of Staph aureus? And/or the overuse/abuse of antibiotics?
What we need on this issue is a real expert.
Senator Tom Coburn (R. OK) said:
I guess the only question I have would be how far away from Washington, D.C. does one have to get before encountering an adult?
SOOOO,
being a dirty fucking hippy, on top of being a greasy fucking mechanic,
I should be good to go.
No germ I’ve met yet can stand up to aerosol brake cleaner anyway.
“Would that be ‘Old Europe’, Alex?”. Next question? :-)
There have been several studies related to the “anti-bacterial” frenzy…. one where children who were allowed to crawl and become dirty had better immune systems than those who didn’t.
Part of our immune system is building antibodies against bugs… if we are not exposed to them how do you build them?
There is reasonable cleanliness standards and there is overboard.
I used to run a printing press — blanket wash would probably eat your aerosol brake cleaner’s lunch!
Actually it has. I still see an over prescription of antibiotics for some people that drives me batty. I only go to the Doc when i’ve got something i can’t shake on my own. In that case it usually needs antibiotics then anyway.
But you can bet the giving of antibiotics for a sniffle to paranoid patients is a huge part of the cause. I can see it in those patients with the compromised immune systems that have real issues with beating them off in the first place. But perfectly healthy patients? Or the paranoid parent that won’t let a kid get dirty or get sick to build up those immunities? Those are the ones i usually just want to strangle. Instead i just roll my eyes after they leave and go back to work. It’s all i can do!
Thanks. That’s what I’ve thought for years, but it’s nice to hear that I’m not nuts!
Good stuff huh?
Can I get it by the case?
I deal with some pretty tenacious grease.
Hah *laughs* katymine and i had the same idea on that one.
OT..From last thread..Jane re: Senate procedures..Google CRS RL30360 and that should get the link to Congressional Research Services and their Report “Filibuster and Cloture in the Senate”
It is an interesting read on what and what can’t be done to block a bill.
It’s a HELL of a solvent, but all kinds of warnings — don’t touch it, don’t breathe it, don’t look at it, don’t be in the same room with it, etc., etc., etc. I used to get it on my hands and I’m still alive. If you know someone at a print shop s/he would be able to tell you more. It’s been about 15 years since I had my hands on a press.
Gee , could ‘IT’ cu,,, I mean come from:
… all those Churchy Het-Married DownLow men who mouth a man’s manly member ‘n such ? ? ?
“But THAT don’t make me GAY !” They cry ( while wiping “him” off their upper hip or lip )
‘Cuz there’s NUH-THING wrong …(BlahBlah…) …with HYPOCRISY , , ,
Is der’ ?
Coburn and Paul..What is it with OB/Gyn’s?
After they a. tortured him b. Subjected him to years of sensory deprivation c. drove the poor fucker over the edge They give him 17 years.
The way I heard it, the judge gave him “credit” for having undergone all that (i.e. mitigating factor)
Makes you proud to be American, doesn’t it?
Not at the moment, no.
Hi Marion,
Re:
I’ve no real opinion or expertise on the either proposed cause, but I do know that “Science News Digest” had an article following up on another peer-reviewed journal article that stated that far too much “santization” has led to a depression of natural immune system responses among the general population.
On the matter of the excessive use of antibiotics leading to antibiotic resistance strains of bacteria, that’s a pretty well established fact, according to a senior ER nurse at the Oregon Health Sciences University hospital who told me a decade ago about bacterial strains in their facility that were resistant to every agent they could think of. To consider that in the future some bugs are going to thrive in bleach is a bit of a bummer.
I am one who believes that AIDS was spread by the Fundies (don’t believe the sex-with-monkeys theory) as a back door way to get rid of them or to “prove” that God is punishing them for their “wicked ways”. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if the same Fundies have created this superbug, MRSA, and have spread it amongst their patients as another way to attack the gays.
Unless you’re a Fundie, you shouldn’t trust these people. LOL
Well, if you look at the “bright” side I suppose life in a regular jail will be like a vacation on the Riviera compared to what he’s been through…
The issue that needs to be discussed is the transition of MRSA from a hospital based infection to a community infection. That is a serious and major transition of an infectious process. Since the good old USA does not have a Public Health system anymore, we probably will never know.
The issue is that MRSA is contacted by our vulnerable populations. Children with poor nutrition, HIV & AIDS patients, Cancer patients, homeless and the elderly.
What is “blanket wash”?
My brother died of a staph aureus infection contracted after surgery at a hospital in Brooklyn, NY. Martin was not gay, which is really neither here nor there since MRSA has been a problem for years. The simple fact is that hospitals in the US (they do much better in Europe)take pathetically few steps to control MRSA–people (including small children) walked in and out of the ICU at the hospital in question (a branch of Mount Sinai) as if it were Grand Central Station. As for washing, the wearing of gowns and gloves –these practices are simply not enforced with any vigor whatever.
The assertion that this is a condition of Gay folk does a terrible disservice to the Gay community and to the many people who die from this infection every year.
Oh, cripes! For real? I’m feeling happier and happier that I’m on the downslope of life… That’s something I don’t necessarily want to live to see.
Thank you for the CRS link. The House operates pretty straightforwardly but I find the Senate hopelessly & archaically mystifying.
Binh An Diep’s “study” isn’t even real science. Read how he determined where the “gay neighborhoods” are:
In other words, the correlation between the incidence of the MDR USA300 bug and gayness is based on eight-year old census information about self-reporting of same-sex couples, not about the self-reporting of the patients who have the bug.
It’s not epidemiology. The fact that Peter LaBarbera of Concerned Women of America has taken up the cause tells you all you need to know.
If there’s a “cluster” that needs investigating (19,000 Americans dies from MRSA every year) it’s probably high school sports teams. Not gay men.
Re:
Uh, too much staring into the abyss…. Oh, never mind. I guess that was pretty politically incorrect.
I have a good friend who is a semi-retired Ob/Gyn and he’s staring into the political abyss at this website: http://911dvdproject.com/
Well, these are pretty much the same folks who too many times have to consider the ER their primary care physician. It seems to me that it’s a short jump from the OR to the ER for an overworked resident and housekeeping staff, which may be how this bug started getting out.
We are eating BL&T’s with pan fries and lots of ketchup and watching Olbermann.
Re:
According to my very well informed friend at OHSU they have had instances where a pure bleach flood was used to sanitize certain hard surfaces, and when swab samples were taken the next day, there was a bacteria that would grow on the agar.
It’s a solvent that’s used to clean the “blanket” of a printing press. That’s the roller that carries the ink image to the paper, usually rubberized. When the press has been running for a while, or if there’s a problem with the consistency of the ink, the blanket can get dirty and you get a lousy image on the paper. That’s when it’s time to stop the press and clean the blanket. Oh, and always at the end of the day. I hope that answers your question.
Luckeeeeeey
Your brother died from a nosocomial infection. I’m so sorry.
Bleach does not kill this bug with any reliability. Even IV Vicodin can be ineffective, especially because it can’t be given for more than about 5 days without a risk of fatal side effects such as renal failure.
The geneticists are on MRSA. They can trace the genetic fingerprints of different strains, and it seems to come from multiple sources -hospitals, use of antibiotics in farm animals, and unkown sources in the general community. I read an article where they get city wastewater and farm runoff and swash it over fancy microchips -micro-arrays and can search of thousands of genetic markers.
More evidence of evolution, I suppose. Wonder what the fundamentalists will make of that.
I’m very sorry for your loss.
Wish we could send you some. ;0)
Elmore and I will be celebrating as my lab work came back nearly normal after getting scared to death that my remaining kidney was failing BUT it was a reacting from the antibiotic for the Valley Fever….
Marion–Thank you. IV tubes aside, any sort of line into the body after surgery, such as feeding tubes, puts you at serious risk.
ok, conspiracy hats on but does anyone think there might be some kind of “depopulization”thingy being worked on?
I really think the antibiotic overkill in animals we eat and the overuse of antibiotics for every little symptom, has something to do with various immune and auto-immune diseases that we’ve been seeing since, I guess, something like the mid-20th Century. I’m extremely worried about the bovine growth hormone in milk too. Maybe much of it has been around a lot longer and was not identified, but it makes you wonder. JMHO
No human being in history would every think of doing such a thing..
Na not with MRSA…. that will be the Avian Flu… like the Spanish Influenza that struck in 1918 and wiped out huge swaths of the world.
hitler?
To say nothing of the chemical overload in the food we all eat. When I was a kid we ate real food. They may have been feeding the animals antibiotics, but I wasn’t fed a diet of fast food with high fructose corn syrup and Red Dye #5 and a whole bunch of things even I can barely pronounce. Heaven only knows how all that stuff mixes around in our bodies and possibly plays with our RNA/DNA. As I said before, I’m getting gladder and gladder that I’m an older person with no children to be terrified for.
We are pleased. Extremely pleased.
L. and okk.
in that same breath
so we can now supposedly just strike with nukes as some kind of pre emptive defense
you know, the type of pre emptive defense this nut launched against Iran
we are out of conventional options, this was the plan, cheney has been itching to go newQUElar and now it seems we are claiming the authority to do just that
I do. Aids and mersa might be two of them. A friend is a microbiologist at Univ. of Miami. He is currently examining the plague (a bacteria). There are live strains in prarie dogs in the midwest. The best cure is prevention. Stay away from prarie dogs and keep your body clean. Bacterias are generally meaner than a virus (aids is an exception). A bacteria can generally survive much longer than a virus outside a host organism.
Re:
The Fundies, as a general rule are dumb as fenceposts. It’s far more likely that superbugs have been created at Ft. Detrick’s AMRIID facility or at the USDA facility at Plum Island off the coast of Connecticut. More here.
A truly excellent, albeit somewhat dated book on biowarfare was written by current CFR fellow and former Newsday reporter Laurie Garrett. Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health is highly readable for the layman and I highly recommend this book as the best survey of public health I’ve ever read.
Let me try to parse this sucker out. We’re gonna nuke someone because we don’t want them to have a nuke? Paging Gen. Buck Turgidson…
In so far as Obama and Hillary continuing their sandbox boxing match, I believe my lady has the perfect solution. She says eliminate them from contention. Vote Edwards.
Your lady is wise.
You mean Iraq. But I get your drift. ; ) They are megalomaniacs hellbent on global hegemony and full spectrum dominance.
ah-YUP. Pretty smart (and pretty, smart) woman, your Lady!
FunnyD
Oh, my. You do know about the really scary places, don’t you…
FunnyD….. big wave HELLO
The Spiritual Entity or Father/Mother God I perceive ‘allowed’ AIDS to occur thru human negligence as a lesson in this school called life . It was in order to see if (what survived of) the Great Teachers ; Jesus , Mohamed and the I AM’s words and admonitions to Love were actually followed , or if the Majority of the so-called ‘Church’ would do as they chose 2 do .
FREE WILL , you know.
The collective ‘Church’ chose to hate , harm and judge in defiance of their own delusions of self-importance . It is obvious , the ‘Church’ failed that test and continues on that doomed path , , ,
the insane part is that ‘they’ expect different results while perpetuating the same violence of lies .
Ob La Dee , , , Ob La , D’UH !
I made this point sometime yesterday and don’t know if anyone commented;
if we look to the story of “atlantis” where doom was deliberately brought upon themselves through their own technology, a society that had more knowledge then the combined societies before them, and now with global warming, bug warfare, etc, it almost looks like the story of atlantis reads as one of the most accurate prophesies of all time
that would make one nice thread if someone wants to put it together here on on their personal blog, I think it would be very attractive
Hey, Katymine!
Glad to hear your medical news is good!
FunnyD
Please let me say, we think it imperative to keep our eyes on the prize. And that ‘prize’ is to rid the White House of the Republicans come next November. We will continue after that event, with all that is within us, to deal with naughty Demos in a very appropriate manner.
Lahoma.
Well said. I have a little list of “naughty Demos,” starting with my Congresscritter, John Barrow….
Thanks Ray. For some reason I can picture in my mind a Fundie minister at one of our prisons across this country infecting a gay prisoner to help in spreading the AIDS virus.
I’m telling you Ray….I don’t trust the Fundies and it’s scary to me that they have their own “scientists” to do this kind of crap!
*adjusting tin foil hat a smidgen*
Re:
I was looking more for the chemical composition of the solvent, eg. Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Benzene, Naptha, organo-phosphate based or other?
Well, at least he did vote for SCHIP… so he may be redeemable…
There are a number of factors in the ID lit that have caused both hospital acquired MSRA and community based MSRA, and promiscuous, inappropriate prescription writing, including using antibiotics for viral infections where they have no efficacy is one of them.

Re:
Channeling Fundamentalist propaganda mongers I can here it now… “What we have here is a sign that God is at work with intelligent design continuing the Creation to this very day.”
Just like the AIDS virus, the Fundies really thought it would stay in the “group”, but it didn’t. Now look at MRSA! Oh boy. Everyone can be affected with it. *slapping my forehead*
The Fundie “scientists” really need to study “aiming”. LOL Just kidding…good gawd, if they perfected that, everyone with green eyes would die of some mysterious Fundie illness.
Oh, dear! That’s WAY, WAY out of my area of expertise. For that you’d have to go to a print shop that still uses real presses. As I said, it’s been something in the neighborhood of 15 years since I had my hands on a press. I did find this MSDS on Teh Google, however.
actually I don’t mean Iraq I mean Iran, this vice president has been itching to create false data to attack Iran and he has deliberately expended conventional assets, the only way to really attack Iran is newQUElar
when he wants to invent fear he does it without any compunction
have a read, that is a frightening story, he replayed it in Iraq and he’s replaying it again in Iran
Rachel and Keith O are talking about spending on infrastructure and Edwards is getting Props for talking about the economy!
Perris, a new war would stimulate the economy, wouldn’t it? Yep! Bush & Cheney must be frothing at the mouth right about now! Spit.
Re:
AMRIID works all the time at “antidotes” for superbugs. In the aftermath of the unsolved post-9/11 antrax attacks, research funding for biowarfare defenses ballooned to multi-billions of new research dollars.
As Laurie Garrett points out in “Betrayal of Trust”, it is impossible to create an antigen/antibiological agent to a super bug unless you’ve created the super bug first.
Clearly the Bush Administration is in the back pocket of the clique that signed on to the Project For A New American Century. In PNAC’s 2000 white paper, “Rebuilding America’s Defenses” there is a call for the development of genotype-specific biowarfare agents. You better believe that they are developing them right now. This isn’t conspiracy stuff. This is easy to determine simply by reading the Federal Register for the line item authorizations.
war does NOT stimulate the economy, that’s a myth, it puts middle class assets in the pockets of the very few, it takes the lives of our young for the purpose of profit, the price is the economy, it doesn’t thrive it declines
there is a peace dividend, there is no war dividend
Well, I’m not sure. It appears that when we’re attacked or, on the other hand, attack some other country who didn’t attack us, all the Current Occupant wants us to do is shop. The recent economic unpleasantness has put paid to that, so that’s not an option. Nope, I guess another war would just auger us in even deeper…
Provided that we win. Provided that we can afford the war and occupation which is something the WH never considers. I agree with you but I’m angry that the WH never learns from their own mistakes.
when I say that’s a myth, I really mean that’s propaganda, they want us to believe we are at least getting something from their depravity
we are not
I see there are three or four responses that have fallen for the propaganda that war is good for the economy
it is not, that is nothing but propaganda, win or loose the economy is better without war
Okay, let me clarify. LOL In the minds of the neocons, it stimulates the economy, which is why ole George H.W. Bush went into Iraq back in 1991. He was hoping it would help the economy and also hoped it would help him get reelected. See?
They have minds??? Who knew….
I understand what you are saying, but in their minds it also does not stimulate the economy, it enriches their bank account so they claim it stimulates the economy
they know what they are doing, they just try to make believe to the rest of us
Absolutely! I wasn’t promoting war at all. I am completely against it and because I despise the individuals in the White House and because I know how they are, they’ll use a strike against Iran to help save themselves. Besides, they’ll do anything at this point to make sure the next president has the biggest mess to clean up after they’re gone. They honestly don’t care if the stock market crashes or if a Depression happens because they’ve been laundering money for years overseas and will be all set.
It was a shock to me too to find this out. LOL
