Josh Marshall:

Just to be clear, I don’t have any brief for Edwards campaign. I think it’s clear his support is falling off now as the race becomes more and more a Clinton/Obama race. The result in Nevada must have been a sobering wake-up call. But I don’t see where insider know-it-alls get off saying he’s under some sort of obligation to ‘do the right thing’ and pack it in.

Atrios:

Julian Epstein just told all 5 of us watching MSNBC that "the honorable thing" for John Edwards to do would be to drop out if he does poorly in South Carolina.

Could anyone explain the details of this particular code of honor to me? I mean, there are certainly arguments that can be made for why John Edwards should drop out, but I have no idea how any of them include a concept of "honor."

I am announcing today that I am resigning from my position at Acme Publishing because I failed to empty the Flavia™ coffee-maker bin earlier today, despite being prompted to do so by the machine. This egregious failure of responsibility, this heinous act of nonfeasance, can only hinder my growth at the company and make it more difficult for my more popular fellow employees to enjoy their morning beverage.

Moreover, I will fall upon my sword tomorrow morning at dawn because I did not vacuum the living room as I had sincerely intended, thus breaching the unspoken code of behavior I owe to my wealthier neighbors who have the inalienable right to live their lives without having to endure the possible migration of dust mites that inhabit my apartment.

In addition, I plan to engage in an extended period of self-flagellation for my blatant presumptuousness when I unintentionally sabotaged the dry cleaners’ narrative. By forgetting my laundry ticket and asking him to look up my information on the computer, I needlessly introduced stress and uncertainty to his job, quite possibly foreshortening his life span by as much as 30 seconds. Such thoughtless, selfish behavior must not be allowed to stand.

Finally, as a "preemptive strike," I will sell off all of my worldly possessions and retire to a cave in the wilderness, where I will live out the rest of my life denied of any creature comforts or human companionship in order to prevent any of these horrible atrocities to happen ever again.

I humbly thank you for your time.
