The GOP primary in South Carolina is today. The weather is evidently for shit and CNN says turnout is low.
The AP has already called Nevada for Romney.
Discuss.
Update: CNN entrance polls have Ron Paul in second place in Nevada. Very high Mormon turnout.
What would happen if the election was held on Digg? Shorter version: Ron Paul blowout.
The authors of Crashing the Gate argue about what it said.
Obama trailing 13-14% among whites in the south, relative to what he does nationally. Whistling Past Dixie, anyone?

Hi Jane!
The AP has already called it for Romney.
Nevada maybe?
So who emerges with he “Big Mo?”
Feh.
How can they call it already?
Well, right across the Savannah River from SC it’s a persistent soaking rain that we’re glad to have. However, it’s not really a day that makes you want to leave the house.
Chuck Todd sez Romney won Nevada because of large Mormon turnout. Ascribes his ability to go forward in other states with large Mormon populations.
I would think that this would be Huckabee country. Is the AP doing a little wishful thinking?
Romney in Nevada he isn’t in the running in SC
I am very confused. What state is doing what?
I am con.fu.zed.
Entrance polls.
Seems to me that if Huck loses SC he’s in very deep trouble.
Mitt and Blackwater will win the puke nomination so it seems to me…
breaking news: a progressive will be on sunday talk show:
sorry, fixed
Yes, this is the state where the pukes kill one another politically – a la the 2000 McCain shiv in the back. What few powers are left in the puke party must have strength in SC to do the bidding of someone.
Could we see a religious war within the GOP between Mormon and radical right evangelitcals? A boy can hope can’t he?
OT
Bill Moyers on MLK and LBJ
It might be kinda fun to run against a robot with nice shiny hair.
SC’s republican citizenry is down and dirty, kill off the upstarts, McCain has a black child, redneckish kind of place.
I assume.
You haven’t seen rednecks until you’ve seen southeastern SC rednecks. They’re a breed apart.
Like in ‘Deliverance’? I hated that movie. Had nightmares for weeks.
You need to visit the Fresno area in California….
Deliverance was in Northern GA.
Here piggy, piggy.
I know. But true rednecks are scary no matter what the geography.
I’m rooting for Romney. As phony as he is, I think he’s the least dangerous of the repubs.
We may need to keep this in mind: No state is red or blue. They are all shades of purple.
Dr. Dean’s 50-state strategy is painstaking, but it is working.
OT but shit: EPA Invokes Executive Privilege In Denying Emissions Waiver In California Over at C&R http://www.crooksandliars.com/…..alifornia/
What fucking kind of bullshit is this?? Where is Hugh… Add this one to his list!!
She’s been on there before. I think she was on there last week?
Thinking of the repubs. I used to be most afraid of Rudy. But, let me tell you, Huck is just as scary. Not as a nominee, but as a pres.
I think Romney would be our most difficult opponent.
It appears that this is going to end up being a pocketbook election.
More than any other Repulican candidate, Romney’s background suggests, real or not, that he has some economic acumen.
Here is something about Obama and Chicago poitics.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/…..879/439500
Wonder if this will blow up?
None of them give me the feeling of calm confidence.
Huck is much more dangerous as prez. He is ignorant, stubborn, a rightwing nut, and a religious zealot. Rudy just wants to have fun /s
Well we’ll see if he has the Teflon facade that Regan had. Perhaps another thing that Obama could compare himself to
Gotta be frustrating for Mitt; he’s won three states and no one will call him the frontrunner.
And he’s not a businessman; he’s a private equitist, or a corporate pirate. No business acumen required in the Main Street sense of the word. Just buy companies, lay off workers, break up the assets and sell them off. It’s not business at all; it’s piracy.
Enough Americans have seen this happen — or had it happen to them — that Romney will be toast in the general. And I am not even counting the magic underwear factor.
Teddy, that’s the definition of republican economics, isn’t it?
Sent some more loot to Edwards yesterday. He may well be the last one standing after the corporatists get zapped. Here is hoping.
CA failed to promise sufficient kickbacks to Republic politicians and their supporters to qualify for a waiver. In the Bush era, things are done differently.
that is my hope as well.
Better now than later
Well said TSF. He is a fu**ing leech.
I did too. Hillary and Obama poll less than John in the general.
The fight between Romney and the AP reporter that was heavily broadcast helped Romney. It made him appear more manly for getting mad and standing up for his foolish self.
Some OT linky follow up to yesterday’s comment.

What the Research Shows
It’s not really new … but there are some questions that hopefully will get cleared up. Note that the article opens with:
”The Illinois senator isn’t accused of any wrongdoing. And there’s no evidence Obama knew contributions to his 2004 U.S. Senate campaign came from schemes Rezko is accused of orchestrating.”
and the issues raised have been brought up before … we’ll see what actually happens but everything these days is being spun from all sides with a lot of frenzy …

Per The Devil’s Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce:
During the primary season my mantra has been:

Strong progressive majority.

Obama boasted about his Chicago background recently I think in response to being tough. Unfortunately this is what that means – getting down and dirty. I will be interesting to see how the worm turns. If there is nothing to it let’s hope Fitzgerald can say that’s that and be done with it, rather than it turning into another Whitewater where there was nothing there.
Where does MSNBC get these assho**s?
I don’t think so. He was accused of being a liar, and he split hairs to claim that he was technically telling the truth. I doubt that was balanced out by the fact that the robot facade partially broke down. But in fact, I doubt that the story made any difference at all in Nevada.
Was that the incident where Romney kicked the photographer for trying to “capture his soul” while he was kneeling down for prayer?
Same place ABC gets theirs. They are all the same.
Teddy, is there a difference between an arbitrager (?SP), a venture capitalist, and a private equitist (a term I don’t believe I’ve heard before)?
Geez, this sabattical stuff is doin’ somthing to me. I’m not really interested in any this. I think that’s not good but I’m not sure. Back to sabbatical.
CSPAN has Paul in 3rd place.
Romney at 50%!!!!!!!
Romney won Nevada Mormons, overwhelmingly. But he also won Catholic and Protestant caucusgoers, as well as Latinos and those who identified themselves at Republicans.
I think it’s interesting that the WaPo head of polling thinks that 33 percent is “about a quarter.”
I made that up! Though given some of the stuff these guys say…
“Where does MSNBC get these assho**s?”
They surgically remove them from rattlesnakes.
You can say what you will about Romney and you may well be right, in fact, I think you are more right than wrong with your glib but rather too thin assessment of his business acumen, but this autumn with the country mired in a recession, I still contend he would pose our most difficult adversary.
Fundies won’t like Romney because they don’t support marriage between a man and a robot.
on msnbc, noron and chuck toad giggling at Bill Clinton for saying the union members were being intimidated by the union bosses…
how do these two know that isn’t happening? I’m guessing they don’t…
Do we know if Harry Reid voted for his fellow mormon?
The dollar is down. A third is now a quarter. Same folks say 1+1=3. And Giuliani is still in the Republican race.
Sure you’re not thinking about this guy?
I don’t think Romney wins on pocketbook issues in the general election; as others have pointed out, his “business” experience consists entirely of downsizing and shipping jobs overseas, not creating them. And trying to paint himself as a “CEO president” just makes it easier to tie him to Bush. “Running government like a business” is a standard Republican brand; in the current climate it may help in the GOP primaries, but it’ll be poison in the general election.
I am thick as a bloody brick. Very good. But how was one supposed to know it was fiction?
An arbitrageur makes money on moving money, simply banking on international spreads. A venture capitalist provides seed-money startup companies. The first creates no jobs, unless you count his/her assistants. The second can create huge numbers of jobs.
A private equitist uses some of his money — and lots of money from others — to buy up companies “in trouble” and, in their words, “turn them around.” These turnarounds usually involve exporting jobs to low-wage countries, laying off American workers, breaking up the companies into smaller components and selling these components off to competitors, and disposing of hard assets like plant equipment, real estate, and fleets.
I invented the term private equitist, so you saw it here first, Ann.
Given the number of businesses laying folks off, the obscene bonuses Wall St is paying for failure and so on, Huckabee’s crack about people not wanting to vote for the guy who laid them off is and will be a devastating comment against Romney and his so-called business acumen.
2% of voting in for Nevada: Obama two, the others 0.
Also, Bill Clinton on tape saying he saw voter intimidation (WTF?)
both per TPM
Speaking of which, is Star Trek TNG’s “7 of 9″ still a Republican?
“Running government like a business” is a standard Republican brand;”
And look how well it’s working out. Let’s hope they continue to run on that.
Yep. I didn’t think Huck had an ounce of clever in him. I’m certain he didn’t come up with the line, but he delivered it perfectly, and it will be back.
United States Equitist League Civil War Broadside, 1864
Fundies won’t like Romney because they don’t support marriage between a man and a robot.
Fundies won’t support Romney because they don’t support plural marriages between women and robots.
IIRC, private equity firms buy up publicly traded companies and part them out. In terms of market value, with corporations as with automobiles, the whole is often worth less than the sum of the parts.
Well, the thing that was pretty questionable was that Bill seemed to be saying that he had personally witnessed intimidation. The idea that the boss did it in front of a former president, and that he didn’t take any action other than talking about it on TV, seems pretty ludicrous, and suggests that he was just repeating a rumor for campaign purposes. (And unless you’re going to take official action for something real, repeating accusations of union intimidation is not good Democrats.)
Perhaps Huckster should propose an anti-robot marriage amendment. Help bring out the base.
seems like an awful big risk to take…
I know! Let’s ask Chelsea!
John Edwards getting his 15 seconds on MSNBC.
Your perspective on Romney’s business record certainly has some merit, but, frankly, I think it is more multi-faceted. Moreover, I expect, if he is the GOP’s nominee, that their propagandists will expose the public to a much different tale.
An interesting fact that I learned a couple of years ago is that, when European firms merge with and/or acquire U.S. firms, it’s the Americans that get canned even when there is no wage difference. Apparently, there are a lot more government protections for Eurpoean workers, making Americans easier to get rid of.
Who, exactly, does Romney appeal to? What do his supporters see in him? I see nothing, which is better than I see in the rest, but I just can’t figure out why people support him. What’s his appeal?
I sure dislike the ”don’t make it easy for union folks to vote” bit and the attacks on the unions as enforcing a vote of Obama … bad way to build our party
Well…on the “economic savior” front…Bloomberg is doing some rather odd things for a non-candidate.Bloomberg Consulting With Perots 3rd Party Advisor
Then there’s that stuff about him hanging out with Lance Armstrong in Texas…the State that he’d need to run in first.

The googles are at it again.
I really think he’s gonna run. I wish I could say the same for Gore :(
I agree. It is also stupid.
Holy Cow, with 19% in, Romney is killing the opposition.
Who, exactly, does Romney appeal to? What do his supporters see in him?
White? Check
Wealthy? Check
Male? Check
Married, with children? Check
Middle-aged? Check
Christian? Close enough. Check
The perfect Republican candidate.
The other numbers are interesting, too. McC and Paul tied at 12%, Huck and Tommy tied at 8% and our very own Julie at 4% !
That’s all of them.
I don’t doubt they’ll try to manufacture the appearance of a positive business record for him, but I don’t see how he’s multi-faceted. Other than running the Olympics, his entire business experience is Bain and Bain Capital. “My father was an auto executive” doesn’t cut it.
Whoever they nominate, they’ll try to make him look good. That’s not the question, the question is whether it’s easier for us to make him look bad than for them to make him look good, and in a foundering economy following a Republican administration, I don’t see making him look good as a particularly easy case to make.
This Cesars Palace thing is weird. Now, I understand what Bubba was talking about.
Most are the culinary workers – committed to Obama.
There are only 2 Edwards supporters in the room.
It is the results of this particular site that is being reported.
There are 8 other sites in Nevada, not reporting yet.
So, this is far from over.
Howdy, y’all!
Nevada is a real slug fest for the dems. Hillary and Obama are currently tied. The numbers are coming on quite frequently.
http://www.nvdems08.com/
I concur with the first part…but I don’t know what is happening at the Caucuses. Nevada is odd in that participants caucus and then vote elsewhere, in secret ballots. Could be embarassing if a Union steward didn’t “bring in the vote” at a particular polling site near where the caucus was held. In many Third World countries this is precisely the method used to manipulate voting.
I was also a bit upset at the “independent union group” that aired ads in Spanish that said that Hillary Clinton was holding back “La Raza”. In Spanish this term is very slippery and can either mean “our people” or “the race”. And the ad clearly played on that by not simply saying “the unions” or the “Culinary Workers”. Even John Edwards thought it was extreme and asked Obama for a renunciation of the ad.

About Gore . . . my deepest, most fervent hope? Re-elect Gore in 2008.

Bill Clinton, aka first guy, says he personally witnessed voter suppression in Vegas. How do you believe anything Bill Clinton says? Please advise.
I guess they are the same as CNN’s.
The Nevada cite seems to be swamped. You can also get results as they come in from here http://www.politico.com/nvcaucuses/index.html
I don’t know what he saw or didn’t see.
Do you really thinks thats the reason?
It would cost their money backers to much of their precious money…this admin is just enablers for the greedy bastards!
the caucus seen on CNN live sure doesn’t look like people are intimidated …
You all know that there are reports of machines not working is SC? Voters being told to come back later.
Nothing works under BushCo. Nothing. Can’t be an accident.
seems unlikely with tv cameras there that that would be possible… I would imagine that at the other caucuses people will have their cell phone cameras at the ready so if there is any funny business, it can be recorded…
Government is the problem! Drown it in the bathtub!
Cheating, cronyism, and corruption all work well under BushCo. They are, after all, the Bush family businesses.
Whistling Past Dixie? I wonder what effect the Bush Administration’s response to hurricane Katrina will have on the voting results in the south?
I have been whistling past dixie for years

TPM seems to have good, recent numbers:

Weren’t you paying attention? Didn’t you hear Barbara Bush say that those people are better off as refugees than they were before the flood?
I hope you are right and that Romney will pose virtually no threat in November.
I believe we will win in the fall. Yet, I fear, if Romney is their nominee, it is going to be more of a struggle than if they nominated one of their other contenders.
I see what you thought I was saying after re-reading your comment…I was referring to his dissatisfaction with the culinary workers voting in the Casino (not his comments about witnessing voter suppression that he made today)and the delegates attributed to it.(which became the big story) and, because they had endorsed Obama, other voters at other sites could get influenced possibly by the media coverage…and/or not have enough delegates to compete fairly or something like that. I don’t agree or disagree, but it seems to me that is what he was saying was unfair…
I’m probably way, way wrong and off-base about it. The whole system sucks if you ask me.
It’s already been underwater for a while. I hope we can revive it.
Amen, sister!!

Jeezus these people are driving me nuckin futs! The link has Bill Clinton’s audio where he sounds all like a whiny baby again, just like in his “fairy tale” rant in NH.
http://www.crooksandliars.com/…..airy-tale/
He has such hatred for Obama and it’s so obvious in his voice. Where does this hatred come from? Say what you will about Obama, but for me he has been a breath of fresh air in terms of campaigning. Talking strictly about the candidates/spouses themselves, the Obamas have been running one of the most positive campaigns I ever remember. Anything that could be construed as negative has been in response to attacks against him, and even then he’s been above board. Frankly, I wish he’d get more aggressive toward the Clintons and all their personal attacks.
So Bill, you want to get in Obama’s face? Seriously, what goes through your head when things start getting all hot and heavy with an intern in the freakin White House fer chrissakes?!? As your pants get undone, did you ever think to say, “You know, this is not a good a idea.” As it starts, do you think, “I’ve got a wife and daughter, and this whole country is counting on me, maybe I shouldn’t do this.” Did you ever think those things Bill?
I had moved past many of these feelings, but the last few weeks have really brought back how odious the Clintons are to me, especially Bill. I said it at the time, and believe it to this day that Bill’s bl*wj*b is why Gore didn’t win in a landslide. As soon as the Monica stuff happened, I knew right then that Gore would not be able to overcome his association with the Clintons (and then he named Lieberme his VP!…yeesh)
I’m very Liberal. I won’t be happy until Russ Feingold is considered a “centrist.” But as a husband and father myself, I’m still completely embarrassed and disgusted by Bill Clinton’s actions in the WH, and what they did to the DemocratIC Party and America. Disgusted! AND THE CLINTONS WON”T GO AWAY!
Damn right it’s a “new politics” Bill. Get your tired ass off the moral high-road, you disgusting human. Time’s passed you by, so get out of the way.
Go Obama and/or Edwards!!!
I agree, mainly because, while the other Republican candidates manifestly look and sound like the batshit loonies they are, Romney looks and sounds like maybe he’s not a complete lunatic (if you don’t really listen to what he says).
Interesting that Romney was handily winning almost all the State of Nevada (not just the Casino districts)…but that Ron Paul was #2 in most of the Western and Northern parts of the State gathering between 13-18% of the votes. McCain got second as the counties neared Arizona.
I’d say that the Nevada vote about kills it for Giuliani since there are some patterns of similarity between Nevadan Republican voters and Californias. But the same pattern might be worrisome to McCain, as well.
“Heck of a job you’re doing there barbara!”
With 22% reporting Hillary 49% Obama 44% Edwards 5.5%
One thing I know for sure…I am always wrong about what appeals to the
“other side.”
WOW did you read that, hear that wanabe first guy?!

I really don’t think Bill Clinton reads these blogs.
ooo – I hear a lot of yelling on CNN at the Dem caucus…
Got back from fishing about an hour ago. Caught three catfish. One for my auntie, one for my lady, and one for me. My lady caught them all. I hooked zero. This is unusual. I will clean them. Lahoma will cook them and I will do KP.
Lahoma has read this post and reminds me that she and i have been the subject of ridicule because of the brownness of our skin. She is angry, (I am thinking about Obama here), that there remain people out there who will not vote for someone because of their gender, religion, sexual preference, or the coloration of their skin. My lady and i are as one on this.

No impact in the south because the Republics will keep it from being an election issue. They want their voters to be greatful tthat he Republics stand ready to keep them safe from gay marriage. Even homeless people sleep better knowing that, right?

Here, hear.
It is imperative to defeat the Republicans.
Edwards is not having a very good day…
I ‘ll grit my teeth and keep reciting the fact that Justice Stephens is in his 80’s.
No Romney, Mccain, Mcrudyhuckabeefredpaulhunter.

Count me in on that point. Judge them on their stands on the issues…. nothing else. I will support the eventual democratic nominee but for now I support Edwards!
who knows what first guy does or does not do except be a complete waste of everyone’s time.
when I’m trying to find things I like about Clinton, judicial nominations is certainly one of them… I think she would choose well.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Ron Paul took at the very least second place. Very Libertarian state in the rural areas
When I lived in Reno, you wouldn’t believe how many people couldn’t stand Cali because of “all the laws, regulations and taxes”
Romney scares me silly. In case you didn’t read it, Charlie Savage had the 10 questions he asked all of the candidates in December about such things as inherent powers to conduct surveillance, presidential powers, signing statements, torture, etc. Romney is the only one of the candidates who thinks all of these things are just fine.
You can read it all here.
Sorry, haven’t read the entire thread yet. Has anyone heard how our Friday netroots fundraiser for Edwards went?
How you gonna cook ‘em?
I don’t think it will be easy, but I don’t think it will be especially hard. I agree that Romney is one of their toughest contenders on the merits, but mostly because he’s not a complete nutball and he has lots of money, not because his business experience will play well. I think McCain would be the toughest, and McCain with Romney’s money would be a real threat.
I think Romney is the “least bad” to be running against. He doesn’t have a particularly good chance of winning, and if he did win, it wouldn’t be a complete disaster like Huckabee or Giuliani. (They might be easier to beat, but I’d rather not take the chance.)
More politics as usual…
http://hotlineblog.nationaljou…..mp_gi.html
The sheeple, and that apparently includes many Liberals, complain about all the political games that are played. Yet, they never seem to demand or support better. Hey, look now! Hillary’s the Underdog candidate still! Wow, seems they’re going to stick with a theme for more than one week. I guess there is change in the air at Camp Clinton after all.
Just like NH, these crazy polls are gonna be all wrong again, huh? There’s such a groundswell of support for a Clinton! She’s the Engine That Could!
(better stop before I puke)
KO showed this yesterday. Painful.
Doesn’t look good for Obama. Clark County (Las Vegas) is still about half out, with Clinton taking about 55% of the vote there. Obama doing better up North near Reno and Carson City…but less population (and delegates) up there.
new thread — Nevada Caucus
John ~ Totally agree, but you get the same sentiments in the foothills and some parts of the Central Valley, Redding, Bakersfield…down to Riverside, Barstow. That’s Red-Meat land…although changing a bit in places like Fresno and Modesto as they get refugees from the high-priced Bay Area.
BTW we should get together sometime…maybe with Mary. I just got back from a half year in Asia but live in Sacramento. Heard there was a FDL meet-up in my absence.
Welcome to the BlueBayState.
Unbelievable! And taking the “Unclear On The Concept” Prize for today is the remarkable Mr. Moulitsas…
From Kos:
Huh? WTF? Earth to Kos: Edwards was speaking for me, for my brothers in the Carpenter’s Union, for the Steelworkers, for all the working people of the nation. He was specifically not distorting what Obama said. He was taking that saccharine and essentially pointless pandering to the Reaganites and making a non-trivial statement of our struggle to take back our country from the forces of malevolence and mendacity who have stolen it from us.
Dear Markos Mouolitsas, what part of “unity within our ranks” don’t you understand?
“Which Side Are You On?”
Come all you good workers,
Good news to you I’ll tell
Of how the good old union
Has come in here to dwell.
CHORUS:
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
My daddy was a miner,
And I’m a miner’s son,
And I’ll stick with the union
‘Til every battle’s won.
They say in Harlan County
There are no neutrals there.
You’ll either be a union man
Or a thug for J. H. Blair.
Oh workers can you stand it?
Oh tell me how you can?
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?
Don’t scab for the bosses,
Don’t listen to their lies.
Us poor folks haven’t got a chance
Unless we organize.
They surgically remove them from rattlesnakes.
Is that before or after digestion
That’d be great. And actually I’m in Citrus Heights (who knows where that is right? unless you’re from here). But tomorrow I’m coming down for the rally.
I guess the meetup was in the Bay Area, but Nefarious Leslie is the local coordinator for Drinking Liberally (which I’ve missed attending for too long) and the local chapter of the ACLU has started a monthly meetup which I think is also the second Thursday of the month — I don’t have the info right now but can get it for you (I’m on the board so I should know this, but we just began it last month)
Yea, and we have to bring Mary as well as Nefarious Leslie and Donna and LindaR and scarecrow’s son fierro (probably incorrect spelling, sorry).
You know … they’re all really great people and I feel very fortunate to have met them
Mitt to Nation: Bite my shiny metal ass!
You and me too! Of all the potential Republicans running, he scares the daylights out of me. Think of a Jim Baker in Billy Graham clothing with the charisma to charm the socks off the evangelicals and the gullible. Beyond that, he has no comprehension of foreign, or fiscal policy.
Personally I think, make that hope, that the Repub party will somehow put an end to his run, one how or another. I don’t think they want to be saddled with this fanatic.
As for SC, they have always been the renegade people of the South. Think Strom Thurman. They voted for him well past his senile years without regard to his ability to be effective, just because they …..? Got me beat. Some South Carolinians can be downright contrary.
