Suz! And Joan Jett!
Joan Jett is HOT!
newton!
greg b - i almost went with her cut of i love rock and roll but the anger in this cut matched my pissy mood.
GregB,
Me too.
found the link to i love rock and roll that i almost used

From GSD’s (GregB) link on previous thread…
“The White House says computer back-up tapes should contain substantially all e-mails between 2003 and 2005. However, the White House recycled backup tapes until sometime in October 2003, taping over existing data. That could mean some e-mail is gone forever if it is also missing from archives.”

skippy’s got yer joan jett right here…

Remind me again, why is impeachment off the table?
hey skippy
cause nancy don’t know how to set a table and won’t let anyone else
Shoot, Suz, I learned how to set a table when I was just a wee little kiddie. Let me at ‘em.
marcy is all over it
did ya’ll see marcy got a link from froomkin (on page two of his post today)
I would not be surprised if the computers have gone missing, too.
Frankly, I think Karl Rove is right. I mean Hillary hasn’t opened up her library records!
Fucking Rove, what a slice of shit.
-G
Oh, My Friend,
If I wasn’t so damn busy, you know, WORKING for a living, would I want to be working to make a difference. Why is impeachment off the table? I should really be pressuring Sherrod Brown.
Because Nancy Pelosi wouldn’t want to let it dirty up her beautiful little mind.
Chris, I hear you. Work definitely gets in the way at times!
at least fitz had rove’s hard drive copied (or whatever the term is for making a court admissible copy)
neuro, sigh, I know. And didn’t we have such high hopes just about this time last year?
we gotta stick with the plan
That came up at work today in a totally different context. Is “abstract” the right term? We were talking about warrants, and abstracts of warrants.
But wouldn’t a computer forenzics expert need the actual hard drive, not a copy, to find any monkey business? I mean, it’s my understanding that nothing is ever really deleted, that anything can be retrieved given enough time, money and expertise. But does the same hold true for a hard drive copy? IANAG (I am not a geek.)
March 15 is just around the corner. What’s everybody going to be doing for the Ides of March 5th Imperial Expeditionary Force Crime in Iraq?
Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?
Keep up the pressure.

We were going over copies and hard copy issues for prescriptions needed for the (yet again) revised regs at my job. Medical is not tree friendly at ALL, but the redundancy comes in handy when the random audit shows up.
we need some geek help here with this
alias, so true — a paper trail comes in handy! ;-)
Suz, your Graham Parker YouTube reminded me of Rockpile
Maybe clone the drive… that way you get everything on it… But if you had the original HD and it hasn’t been formated at least 10 times (old standard for secure drives to be retired)then from the residual image on the drive can be read. The FBI has a whole dept dedicated to this kind of forensics. Impound the drives!
Definitely. At some point we’ll be able to adapt it so we kill less trees. For now? That paper trail is very essential when the DEA comes calling.
See above comment. Using a command to rewrite the drive ten times over usually will wipe out the residual image on the drive.
Re:
Umm, just guessing here, but maybe it’s because democracy is dead and imperial Washington is consolidating power in the unitary executive, no matter what sort of lip service they Democrats give to being an “opposition”?
Real oppositions do this. Democrats just keep begging for handouts from Wall Street Fat Cats.
All Power to the
SovietsPeople!I recomment to my industrial clients that they replace their hard disks every 2.5 years. Just chuck the old ones and replace them with new ones, freshly formatted and all data restored from non-cloned sources…
It’s a simple matter to simply swap them out.
Then I wold imagine old K-K-Karl has already done that.
‘allo, Suzanne!
hiya Token!
anyone want some cracker?
hey teddy
token is currently not speaking to me otherwise i would pass on your howdy
Hey Mam,
Not found.
Sheesh, where were you with your great advice a year ago before I lost a hard drive at 2.75 years?
As I subsequently came to find out, there’s a problem with hiring consultants to build OEM boxes when their attitude is to use low-bid components. The $20 I saved by getting a Brand X hard drive on my XP box was definely no savings when I lost ~3 years worth of bookmarks. Oh, we recovered 98% of my files, but gawd it was a painful jerking of my own chain.
My new guy swears by Western Digital HDs. What’s your view?
Suz, bad link :-(
Chris, it’s hard to get anything besides his answering machine, when I call his DC office.
I’ll have to bug the local offices more.
try this one
What have you done to alienate the affections of the cutest dog in the world (nine pound category), woman?
i am zero for two on links tonight. dayam. sorry folks
I didn’t make that up. It was a method I had to use in secure information devices. It has also happened that a customer of Best buy had his drive replaced (electronic problem not the actual hard disk) and some one from across the country had purchased the repaired drive and found all of his personal info on the hard drive! Credit card, social secutity numbers, bank account numbers and so forth… He was lucky the other person got a hold of him and gave him the drive. So don’t ever just let the geek squad take your hard drive and repplace it with another one. Best way to wipe out info is to completly destroy the disks…melting works quite well
bathed him without having a blow dryer in the house
Excellent Cracker there, Suz ;-)
I was just going to say that Seagate Baracuda’s are all I will install, and the Western Digitals are the ones I see in failure-mode most often (at least they fail their SmartCheck) in Macs. But I don’t work on PC’s.
High time for a change.
;>)
Here are some dates in the Plame affaire that might relate to the disappearing emails.
OVP overwritten email on 9/12/03 ~ Cheney appeared on Meet The Press on 9/14/03 denying that he sent Wilson to Niger. I believe that this was his first public declaration about Wilson.
9/30/03 ~ WH Counsel Alberto Gonzalez emails WH (and OVP?) employees about identifying and preserving all relevant materials to the DOJ leak investigation
OVP overwritten email 10/1-2/03 and 10/5/03
On 10/3/03 Gonzalez sent an email regarding the deposition of all the relevant materials to the WH Counsels office…
For purposes of this memorandum, the term “documents” includes
“without limitation all electronic records, telephone records of
any kind (including but not limited to any documents that memorialize
telephone calls having been made), correspondence, computer records,
storage devices, notes, memoranda, and diary and calendar entries”
in the possession of the Executive Office of the President, its
staff, or its employees, wherever located, including any documents
that may have been archived in Records Management.
[Note that it did not include the “OVP”, which they havesince argued is a seperate, co-equal branch of government. Perhaps this concept was developed to legally elude the subpoena.]
Email overwritten WH 12/17/03; 12/20-21/03 ~ This approximates the recusal of John Ashcroft and the appointment of Fitz.
Email overwritten WH 1/9-11/04~ This coincides with the transmission to WH staff the “waiver of confidentiality” forms
Both emails from WH and OVP 1/29/04 overwritten
~ the same day WH Counsel Gonzalez emails (how these were recorded I have no idea…hard copies?) WH Staff regarding the January 22nd DOJ subpoenas re. Niger and media contacts.
OVP overwrites email on 1/30/04~ That day two significant events occurred in the Plame investigation.
The Grand Jury subpoenas all email communications b/w OVP and 25 named Journalists; and
Comey establishes that Fitz has “Plenary Powers” of the Attorney General.
Lost emails: WH 2/1-3/04; both OVP and WH 2/7-8/04 [possible discussions of above?]
2005
@ 2/13/05 Addington gives FBI Interview; Ari cops an immunity deal re. Libby discussions
OVP~deleted email 2/15-17/05
It’s downright odd that emails are lost that directly follow the express directives to PRESERVE relevant documents that face subpoena.
I would never ever buy a Wester digital drive … I have lost several of them… I did get a court ordered settlement from them. Fujitsu or Seagate are a better bet.
I like the Fujitsu’s for laptops. Yep.
It’s late here in EST-ville…funny how that happens. Good night all!
Suz I use to bathe Tucker but groomer said it caused knots… it does so we wait… but boy when they get wet stinkley
Nite Lou
sweet thanks db
Sheer concidence.
You know life is funny and stuff happens.
War criminals get off and innocent people serve 20 years for frame jobs.

Gotta cook with fire, S.
;>)
I never thought you made it up. I believe everything I read at FDL.
But seriuosly, what’s the best way to melt a hard drive? I don’t thing I want to throw my old one in the fireplace…
My impression is that the hard drives were not obtained of most of the individuals involved. If they had been they couldn’t have been overwritten within the amount of time that the emails disappeared. It would take months of heavy use, and even that would leave traces within the drives. In addition the losses would be random across the drive, I’d suspect. The pattern almost seems intentional, with losses on some dates, but not others…and conveniently leaving emails that are official notifications that would be known to Fitz.
It seems as if certain emails or dates were repeatedly erased, written over, and erased, written over and deleted, and written over with random characters, and then erased again. Interestingly, if one checked the drives it might reveal traces of the gibberish used to destroy the originals.
Which, of course, would indicate a “COVER UP” both figuratively and literally. And that’s obstruction of justice.
MIT had a project with several grad students working on it, and they recovered data from hard drives that had been in the ocean–and recovered data “off the edge” of the HDs. I remember Tech TV had them on, and Bunny, the guy who wrote the book on hacking the X-Box was one of them. Some of those HDs had been formatted several times. I tried to find details on that project a little while back.
I’ve learned not to be the first to click ‘em, thanks for the vetting!!
Hi db, nite Lou
g’nite LL
token’s got his dad’s hair, the scottie/yorkie straight hair. his sister, her hair knots up something fierce but not his. he’s due to go to the groomers to get his nails trimmed but i could not wait anymore.
Take it apart is has an aluminum substrate it needs to reach 1220.666 °F so you need a good ht fire or just mangle the disks works pretty good also
i must admit that your Viking comment made me smile, db. thank you :)
To destroy the whole drive you can go to any radio station and run the drive over their gauss demagnetizer several times. These are used for erasing recording tape, but they work with any magnetic medium.
Gotta flip it over and run it across in many different directions, but that should do it. The data destruction will be near total and not selective, you’d have to preserve any data you wanted by copying it onto a different drive. Oh…and there may not be a guarantee that the drive will be functional.
That’s pretty damn hot! I was thinking strong magnets and a sledgehammer…
Hi, WDD…Still got the blues?
;>)
…Other methods merely address the problem, S.
You can consider Seagate and Maxtor merged now–’cause Seagate bought Maxtor a while back.
I haven’t had any problem on PCs at all with
WD external HDs. They work like a charm. All you do is plug ‘em in and format.
For internal HDs, I don’t know that WDs have a particularly higher failure rate or any stats on that then others, but you can get Seagate Baracudas and others at steep discounts at stores like Fry’s. I got 3 of them to set up a RAID array on a one day sail for nearly 1/3 the normal price.
I gotta get some sleep. But I am having second thoughts on the election? I may have to vote for Mike Hukcabee. Now that I know he’s been endorsed by Ric “Nature Boy” Flair.
I mean that is a serious endorsement.
-G
Nice to see ya around DB.
Night gang.
-G
g’nite greg b
I have a friend who has started just such a company of recovering data from submerged drive and ones that have been through a fire, although the disks were in the casing. That why I mention ed either melt them(not really praticle for most folks) or take the drive apart and mangle the drives… a hammer does a good job directly on the disks.
Night Suzanne!
-G
Bill Maher on…. gotta watch
Yeah, I guess locking down Abdullah the Butcher was too hard.
;>)
Chuck Norris ain’t so badass.
The blues? Always!
What an excellent choice. He’s making everything up hour to hour, and compared to Mitt Romney who changes positions every couple days, Huckaby has changed several in the last 3 days.
He’s flipped on the Confederate flag’s and immigration in the last day to name two positions.
Not one single candidate wants to touch the devil of the details in either party. Not one.
You won’t hear any specific answer from any of them, and it’s a question that scares Hillary girl to death. They all know that it’s possible the Hispanic vote could mean the difference in the general.
One great aspect of Huckabee’s brilliance is that he has a great eye for convenience–with him you don’t need to know the Constitution or have a copy of it if you get and study the Bible because he wants to merge them. What brilliant one stop shopping.
Instead of the 5th Amemdment and its derivative case law, you can just turn to the Book of Job or Ecclesiastes.
g’nite nahant
I like these guys. Absolutely no service, but cheap and fast.
Yes New Egg is very good. I have a lot of friends that are fond of them and use them all the time.
I didn’t say It was beddie bye time I just going to pay more attention to the toobz… but for the blues you can’t beat:

newton, is it forking cccold on your side of the hill? i’m down to 36 up here.
they are good but sam and dave’s version is the best, dood.
Nothing like in your neck of the woods…
about 50 and dry.
I’ve been able to find all kinds of great stuff on You Tube and some of the new sites that are like it. It’s been a great way to find music fast without even having to download it.
This whole bulldada about the Bush Administration a) not preserving the original emails and THEN, b) overwriting the back-ups reminds me of that Seinfeld sketch. Y’know the one about where Jerry makes a RESERVATION for a car, and then is told that the vehicle has been given out.
Isn’t the purpose of a BACK-UP tape to prevent the loss of information IF the original is lost? What the hell are they being OVERWRITTEN for?????
I agree… here they are again:

I know this is being dissected and discussed a lot on EW and has been talked about but it doesn’t seem like any investigation hsa gone after the RNC servers and HDs the way they should. They were used (I suspect) a ton by the White House staffers, and I imagine the RNC has destroyed many of their accounts that were used by the WH over the past several years by now, and that they’re still using them.
Thanks for the 411. Now I’m totally confused about which brand to use. The new WD seems to be operating flawlessly here. And the defective drive we took out was a Maxtor. So, I’ll remain vigilant here.
Be glad for the weekend…’cause a well-known day’s a-comin’…
;>)
I’d suspect melting them would work. But hammering them would simply make them generally unreadable through a normal device. But there might very well be fragments of data preserved that could somehow be extracted through a special optical reader. High temperatures, like a strong magnetic field, would degauss the information. I suspect the immersion in salt water probably is more of a chemical process. Cold would actually inhance preservation.
Ray the WDs I have are working great–but they’re all external USB HDs. I love their convenience if you need extra real estate fast. It sounds like you’re talking about internal HDs you want to replace at work though.
I don’t think you have much to worry about.
m word day
SRV!!!
xxxoooxxxoooxxxooo
Actually tapes are usually over written if they are in the daily rotation. The weeklies are usually over written about every six months or so. but there also supposed to be monthly tapes ( which contain all the info created for the current month) which are not used again but archived for a period of time which is in years. Sooo some one changed the rotation and violated standard policy!! If it looks like a cover up it is a cover up… those things don’t happen by mistake… logs and all that
shake big joe style
LOL–
You remind me of the “Moonlight” episode I watched earlier and the ways to destroy a vampire.
I wish I could find some info on the web on the MIT project because they had people working on their PhDs researching recovery.
LOL if you smash them with sledge hammers, and cut them up, I imagine there are limits to recovery.
I think the forensic computer biz would be very interesting. I ran into some recovery guys at meetings, and they were very closed mouthed. I was just trying to find out a little about how they worked, and it was blood from a turnip.
You are only as good as your last back up is… moral keep data on several drives if you don’t own a tape drive… but with the cost of DVD drives being what they are, once a month copy all your data to a DVD. You can always replace a crashed drive and only lose very recent data.
Hey, who’s Randy Savage endorsing? Ohhh Yeeeeahhhhh.
I’ll vote for anyone else, just about.
Yep. More than a fifth of my income comes from holding the tear-stained hands of those doofus-like clients who don’t take that advise.
