“The White House says computer back-up tapes should contain substantially all e-mails between 2003 and 2005. However, the White House recycled backup tapes until sometime in October 2003, taping over existing data. That could mean some e-mail is gone forever if it is also missing from archives.”

Remind me again, why is impeachment off the table?
hey skippy
cause nancy don’t know how to set a table and won’t let anyone else
Shoot, Suz, I learned how to set a table when I was just a wee little kiddie. Let me at ‘em.
marcy is all over it
did ya’ll see marcy got a link from froomkin (on page two of his post today)
I would not be surprised if the computers have gone missing, too.
Frankly, I think Karl Rove is right. I mean Hillary hasn’t opened up her library records!
Fucking Rove, what a slice of shit.
-G
Oh, My Friend,
If I wasn’t so damn busy, you know, WORKING for a living, would I want to be working to make a difference. Why is impeachment off the table? I should really be pressuring Sherrod Brown.
Because Nancy Pelosi wouldn’t want to let it dirty up her beautiful little mind.
Chris, I hear you. Work definitely gets in the way at times!
at least fitz had rove’s hard drive copied (or whatever the term is for making a court admissible copy)
neuro, sigh, I know. And didn’t we have such high hopes just about this time last year?
we gotta stick with the plan
That came up at work today in a totally different context. Is “abstract” the right term? We were talking about warrants, and abstracts of warrants.
But wouldn’t a computer forenzics expert need the actual hard drive, not a copy, to find any monkey business? I mean, it’s my understanding that nothing is ever really deleted, that anything can be retrieved given enough time, money and expertise. But does the same hold true for a hard drive copy? IANAG (I am not a geek.)
March 15 is just around the corner. What’s everybody going to be doing for the Ides of March 5th Imperial Expeditionary Force Crime in Iraq?

We were going over copies and hard copy issues for prescriptions needed for the (yet again) revised regs at my job. Medical is not tree friendly at ALL, but the redundancy comes in handy when the random audit shows up.
we need some geek help here with this
alias, so true — a paper trail comes in handy! ;-)
Suz, your Graham Parker YouTube reminded me of Rockpile
Maybe clone the drive… that way you get everything on it… But if you had the original HD and it hasn’t been formated at least 10 times (old standard for secure drives to be retired)then from the residual image on the drive can be read. The FBI has a whole dept dedicated to this kind of forensics. Impound the drives!
Definitely. At some point we’ll be able to adapt it so we kill less trees. For now? That paper trail is very essential when the DEA comes calling.
See above comment. Using a command to rewrite the drive ten times over usually will wipe out the residual image on the drive.
Re:
Umm, just guessing here, but maybe it’s because democracy is dead and imperial Washington is consolidating power in the unitary executive, no matter what sort of lip service they Democrats give to being an “opposition”?
Real oppositions do this. Democrats just keep begging for handouts from Wall Street Fat Cats.

It’s a simple matter to simply swap them out.
Then I wold imagine old K-K-Karl has already done that.
‘allo, Suzanne!
hiya Token!
anyone want some cracker?
hey teddy
token is currently not speaking to me otherwise i would pass on your howdy
Hey Mam,
Not found.
Sheesh, where were you with your great advice a year ago before I lost a hard drive at 2.75 years?
As I subsequently came to find out, there’s a problem with hiring consultants to build OEM boxes when their attitude is to use low-bid components. The $20 I saved by getting a Brand X hard drive on my XP box was definely no savings when I lost ~3 years worth of bookmarks. Oh, we recovered 98% of my files, but gawd it was a painful jerking of my own chain.
My new guy swears by Western Digital HDs. What’s your view?
Suz, bad link :-(
Chris, it’s hard to get anything besides his answering machine, when I call his DC office.
I’ll have to bug the local offices more.

What have you done to alienate the affections of the cutest dog in the world (nine pound category), woman?
i am zero for two on links tonight. dayam. sorry folks
I didn’t make that up. It was a method I had to use in secure information devices. It has also happened that a customer of Best buy had his drive replaced (electronic problem not the actual hard disk) and some one from across the country had purchased the repaired drive and found all of his personal info on the hard drive! Credit card, social secutity numbers, bank account numbers and so forth… He was lucky the other person got a hold of him and gave him the drive. So don’t ever just let the geek squad take your hard drive and repplace it with another one. Best way to wipe out info is to completly destroy the disks…melting works quite well
bathed him without having a blow dryer in the house
Excellent Cracker there, Suz ;-)
I was just going to say that Seagate Baracuda’s are all I will install, and the Western Digitals are the ones I see in failure-mode most often (at least they fail their SmartCheck) in Macs. But I don’t work on PC’s.
High time for a change.

Here are some dates in the Plame affaire that might relate to the disappearing emails.
OVP overwritten email on 9/12/03 ~ Cheney appeared on Meet The Press on 9/14/03 denying that he sent Wilson to Niger. I believe that this was his first public declaration about Wilson.
9/30/03 ~ WH Counsel Alberto Gonzalez emails WH (and OVP?) employees about identifying and preserving all relevant materials to the DOJ leak investigation
OVP overwritten email 10/1-2/03 and 10/5/03
On 10/3/03 Gonzalez sent an email regarding the deposition of all the relevant materials to the WH Counsels office…
For purposes of this memorandum, the term “documents” includes
“without limitation all electronic records, telephone records of
any kind (including but not limited to any documents that memorialize
telephone calls having been made), correspondence, computer records,
storage devices, notes, memoranda, and diary and calendar entries”
in the possession of the Executive Office of the President, its
staff, or its employees, wherever located, including any documents
that may have been archived in Records Management.
[Note that it did not include the “OVP”, which they havesince argued is a seperate, co-equal branch of government. Perhaps this concept was developed to legally elude the subpoena.]
Email overwritten WH 12/17/03; 12/20-21/03 ~ This approximates the recusal of John Ashcroft and the appointment of Fitz.
Email overwritten WH 1/9-11/04~ This coincides with the transmission to WH staff the “waiver of confidentiality” forms
Both emails from WH and OVP 1/29/04 overwritten
~ the same day WH Counsel Gonzalez emails (how these were recorded I have no idea…hard copies?) WH Staff regarding the January 22nd DOJ subpoenas re. Niger and media contacts.
OVP overwrites email on 1/30/04~ That day two significant events occurred in the Plame investigation.
The Grand Jury subpoenas all email communications b/w OVP and 25 named Journalists; and
Comey establishes that Fitz has “Plenary Powers” of the Attorney General.
Lost emails: WH 2/1-3/04; both OVP and WH 2/7-8/04 [possible discussions of above?]
2005
@ 2/13/05 Addington gives FBI Interview; Ari cops an immunity deal re. Libby discussions
OVP~deleted email 2/15-17/05
It’s downright odd that emails are lost that directly follow the express directives to PRESERVE relevant documents that face subpoena.
I would never ever buy a Wester digital drive … I have lost several of them… I did get a court ordered settlement from them. Fujitsu or Seagate are a better bet.
I like the Fujitsu’s for laptops. Yep.

Gotta cook with fire, S.
;>)
I never thought you made it up. I believe everything I read at FDL.
But seriuosly, what’s the best way to melt a hard drive? I don’t thing I want to throw my old one in the fireplace…
My impression is that the hard drives were not obtained of most of the individuals involved. If they had been they couldn’t have been overwritten within the amount of time that the emails disappeared. It would take months of heavy use, and even that would leave traces within the drives. In addition the losses would be random across the drive, I’d suspect. The pattern almost seems intentional, with losses on some dates, but not others…and conveniently leaving emails that are official notifications that would be known to Fitz.
It seems as if certain emails or dates were repeatedly erased, written over, and erased, written over and deleted, and written over with random characters, and then erased again. Interestingly, if one checked the drives it might reveal traces of the gibberish used to destroy the originals.
Which, of course, would indicate a “COVER UP” both figuratively and literally. And that’s obstruction of justice.
MIT had a project with several grad students working on it, and they recovered data from hard drives that had been in the ocean–and recovered data “off the edge” of the HDs. I remember Tech TV had them on, and Bunny, the guy who wrote the book on hacking the X-Box was one of them. Some of those HDs had been formatted several times. I tried to find details on that project a little while back.
I’ve learned not to be the first to click ‘em, thanks for the vetting!!
Hi db, nite Lou
g’nite LL
token’s got his dad’s hair, the scottie/yorkie straight hair. his sister, her hair knots up something fierce but not his. he’s due to go to the groomers to get his nails trimmed but i could not wait anymore.
Take it apart is has an aluminum substrate it needs to reach 1220.666 °F so you need a good ht fire or just mangle the disks works pretty good also
i must admit that your Viking comment made me smile, db. thank you :)
To destroy the whole drive you can go to any radio station and run the drive over their gauss demagnetizer several times. These are used for erasing recording tape, but they work with any magnetic medium.
Gotta flip it over and run it across in many different directions, but that should do it. The data destruction will be near total and not selective, you’d have to preserve any data you wanted by copying it onto a different drive. Oh…and there may not be a guarantee that the drive will be functional.
That’s pretty damn hot! I was thinking strong magnets and a sledgehammer…
Hi, WDD…Still got the blues?
;>)
…Other methods merely address the problem, S.
You can consider Seagate and Maxtor merged now–’cause Seagate bought Maxtor a while back.
I haven’t had any problem on PCs at all with
WD external HDs. They work like a charm. All you do is plug ‘em in and format.
For internal HDs, I don’t know that WDs have a particularly higher failure rate or any stats on that then others, but you can get Seagate Baracudas and others at steep discounts at stores like Fry’s. I got 3 of them to set up a RAID array on a one day sail for nearly 1/3 the normal price.
I gotta get some sleep. But I am having second thoughts on the election? I may have to vote for Mike Hukcabee. Now that I know he’s been endorsed by Ric “Nature Boy” Flair.
I mean that is a serious endorsement.

I have a friend who has started just such a company of recovering data from submerged drive and ones that have been through a fire, although the disks were in the casing. That why I mention ed either melt them(not really praticle for most folks) or take the drive apart and mangle the drives… a hammer does a good job directly on the disks.
Night Suzanne!

Chuck Norris ain’t so badass.
The blues? Always!
What an excellent choice. He’s making everything up hour to hour, and compared to Mitt Romney who changes positions every couple days, Huckaby has changed several in the last 3 days.
He’s flipped on the Confederate flag’s and immigration in the last day to name two positions.
Not one single candidate wants to touch the devil of the details in either party. Not one.
You won’t hear any specific answer from any of them, and it’s a question that scares Hillary girl to death. They all know that it’s possible the Hispanic vote could mean the difference in the general.
One great aspect of Huckabee’s brilliance is that he has a great eye for convenience–with him you don’t need to know the Constitution or have a copy of it if you get and study the Bible because he wants to merge them. What brilliant one stop shopping.
Instead of the 5th Amemdment and its derivative case law, you can just turn to the Book of Job or Ecclesiastes.

This whole bulldada about the Bush Administration a) not preserving the original emails and THEN, b) overwriting the back-ups reminds me of that Seinfeld sketch. Y’know the one about where Jerry makes a RESERVATION for a car, and then is told that the vehicle has been given out.
Isn’t the purpose of a BACK-UP tape to prevent the loss of information IF the original is lost? What the hell are they being OVERWRITTEN for?????
I agree… here they are again:

This whole bulldada about the Bush

I know this is being dissected and discussed a lot on EW and has been talked about but it doesn’t seem like any investigation hsa gone after the RNC servers and HDs the way they should. They were used (I suspect) a ton by the White House staffers, and I imagine the RNC has destroyed many of their accounts that were used by the WH over the past several years by now, and that they’re still using them.
Thanks for the 411. Now I’m totally confused about which brand to use. The new WD seems to be operating flawlessly here. And the defective drive we took out was a Maxtor. So, I’ll remain vigilant here.
Be glad for the weekend…’cause a well-known day’s a-comin’…
;>)
I’d suspect melting them would work. But hammering them would simply make them generally unreadable through a normal device. But there might very well be fragments of data preserved that could somehow be extracted through a special optical reader. High temperatures, like a strong magnetic field, would degauss the information. I suspect the immersion in salt water probably is more of a chemical process. Cold would actually inhance preservation.
Ray the WDs I have are working great–but they’re all external USB HDs. I love their convenience if you need extra real estate fast. It sounds like you’re talking about internal HDs you want to replace at work though.
I don’t think you have much to worry about.

Actually tapes are usually over written if they are in the daily rotation. The weeklies are usually over written about every six months or so. but there also supposed to be monthly tapes ( which contain all the info created for the current month) which are not used again but archived for a period of time which is in years. Sooo some one changed the rotation and violated standard policy!! If it looks like a cover up it is a cover up… those things don’t happen by mistake… logs and all that
shake big joe style
LOL–
You remind me of the “Moonlight” episode I watched earlier and the ways to destroy a vampire.
I wish I could find some info on the web on the MIT project because they had people working on their PhDs researching recovery.
LOL if you smash them with sledge hammers, and cut them up, I imagine there are limits to recovery.
I think the forensic computer biz would be very interesting. I ran into some recovery guys at meetings, and they were very closed mouthed. I was just trying to find out a little about how they worked, and it was blood from a turnip.
You are only as good as your last back up is… moral keep data on several drives if you don’t own a tape drive… but with the cost of DVD drives being what they are, once a month copy all your data to a DVD. You can always replace a crashed drive and only lose very recent data.
Hey, who’s Randy Savage endorsing? Ohhh Yeeeeahhhhh.
I’ll vote for anyone else, just about.
Yep. More than a fifth of my income comes from holding the tear-stained hands of those doofus-like clients who don’t take that advise.
Take a look on some of the empty wheel threads. Mad Dog and some others have discussed the backups and the WH email servers in a lot of detail over the past few days.
But there was gold in the RNC servers because they used the hell out of the RNC accounts to avoid putting things on the White House HDs.
What they’ve probably done with them now–well… we’ll probably never find out. The problem with these people is they just don’t care. They don’t answer to courts, except to pay lip service, and they don’t care about investigations. They aren’t giving up any info ever.
I’ll bet they are very closed mouth. It is really just a matter of reconstructing the index ( which pages go together) and then reading the 1’s and 0’s. Now the tools needed well thats another thing!
You weren”t supposed to be up that late watching ‘rock and roll’…I’m telling!
;>)
But if you’ve got dinero, I’ll keep my boca shut.
;>)
but i don’t have a camero
Neither Job or Ecclesiastes are Biblical books that deal with Judaic law. If anything they could be called Wisdom books. Both sort of fall out from the normal Jewish Canon so much that some scholars doubt that they were originally Jewish. Consider that Job says that no matter how much you obey God you are still likely to be gob-smacked. That’s practically a statement that God is a) either non-existant, b) not a “personal God” (doesn’t give a fig about human affairs, or c) downright malevolent. Ecclesiastesnever even uses the Judaic term for God. It’s attributed to Soloman, but most scholars think it was written in a much more poetic language, and probably plagiarized by some Jewish scribe.
The Jewish laws are in books like Genesis, Deuterotomy or Kings.
What do you expect, a little CYA goes a long way…. and they have their experts But if we could the RNC servers usually they use raid stripping across multiple drives, all you would need is the root drive… I did say they had experts didn’t I shit double shit… but there is surely ac over up going on, you can bank on that!
I found a site that says you can download YouTubes, and play them on
VLC or another player.
Anyone had any experience with this?
Augie! Doug! Flaco!
Dayum db, you’re on a roll tonight.
I use Real Player when I want to down load youtube music and its free
It has become much easier for end users to backup now. There are good programs with Wizards, like Acronis, Vista’s backup is fine, and One Care (3 licenses for $33 bucks) has a backup that will backup most things but not as muchy as Vista, and they could manually drag and drop or just move stuff to an external HD quickly.
I got a message on one box that the HD was failing on boot. With a Dell you can ctrl+alt+d and run a HD analysis on start at the firmware screen. I did and it was a bad news error code.
I had backed up well–I use Acronis and I had done it manually to my external. 2 days later it wouldn’t boot–I had a triple boot on the box of XP, Vista, and Vista SP1.
I tried to use Startup Repair several times and it said no dice–your HD is fried. So then I ran the bootrec.exe switches from the cmd prompt you can reach from the Vista DVD and it recovered my Vistas. I used Startup Repair to recocver the XP. I’ve been using them for 2 months and they work like a charm.
Obviously I must have recovered some electromagnetism enough for the HD to work again. I mean the bootrec.exe switches don’t fix HDs, they fix OS’s.
I thought about the hail marys I’ve never tried–putting the HD in the freezer for an hour, and banging the HD (gently) against a padded hard surface.
I’m using the “failing” HD now and it works great, and I bought the Seagates and a RAID controller, and they’re sitting here ready to go.
I understand. I just grabbed some names quickly to poke fun at Huckabee’s comment the other day that he’d like to remake the Constituion by using the bible.
It sounds like you know a lot more about the Old and New testaments than I do.
Lots of luck if you are backing up hundreds of Gigs of data. Takes lots of DVDs.
You are better off with a hardware RAID
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbZcslc9M78
A little change for ya all
No dinero, no camaro…You know what that’s worth, Suz…

If you’re running Firefox, try Fast Video Download, M.
Sorry, I meant on XP I used a Repair Install–my favorite and most reliable way to fix a no boot XP.
I haven’t used Knoppix “Recovery Discs” or if that’s not what they’re called Knoppix to recover Windows. Have you had much experience using them or any Linux to recovery Windows?
if i aint dead already, girl you know the reason why.
How do you do this?
You know, this one might more accurately describe the overall situation than I realize.

Back to phreakin square one. Again. For what, the 3rd time?
Worst, president, evah.
Bad gubbermint, too.
Let’s get progressive, again, folks.
Sounds like you like to live dangerously with the triple boot thing. If want to run different OS’s I just build it on another system ( it helps that customers give/pay me to take their old systems)- If you really want to find out if the disk is bad get your data off and then use fdisk and repartition the disk formatting would be required but I am sure you know that from your previous comments. Good luck computers are fun and entertaining and sometimes just frustrating!
LOL you’d better believe it. I mean it’s obvious that places like the RNC and the WH can get creme de la creme experts to set up their backups and I’m sure they did.
Hell–DOJ hired guys from MSFT who ran huge divisions (and despite that the FBI has wasted 200 million on two systems they couldn’t get running) and guys have gone from DOJ back to MSFT.
That bullshit interview where Tony Fratto answered questions (the Deputy WH Press Secretary the other day) was so much crap.
What the idiot said in essence was translated “No one knew anything about backing up at the WH–anything lost was lost by accident. He also put Fred Fielding’s ass in a sling with his statements and I hope they nail Feilding. They’ve subpoenaed him–at least Waxman has, but they’ll probably just claim Executive Privilege again.
Late to this party, but someone’s quotin Lennon.
Yes, I’m Lonely. (que band)
For Macs – TubeSock. DLoads YouTubes and converts to QuickTime. Not flawless, but pretty good.
I really haven’t used Linux much as my clients use mostly using windows and there are plenty of tools available. And I do subscribe to Technet plus… gives me licenses to all of Microsoft’s software and tools and lots of on line reference material.
for us non mac types? the video downloader thingie?
Here is one for the rethuglians

I take your point on triple boots, but I’m not running any Linux. And I always make a point to install the older Windows (or as I like to spell it Windoz OS first). When I’m beta testing an OS, I like to use a dual boot because you have spent years making files, shortcuts, etc. on the previous OS (in this case XP for years) and you can shortcut to the XP desktop from Vista and vice-versa. The way MSFT set it up they didn’t backport Vista so the restore points got zapped if you booted XP, but I just avoided having to boot much to the old OS by using a shortcut on my desktop to XP.
I don’t format that often and reinstall OS’s–some people like to do that.
What I plan to do and I’m not sure if it’s even called a Raid 1+ Raid 0 (simultaneously using 3 HDs the next time or a Raid 5–it’ll be my first but I want to have the backup on the fly, the speed in writing to the HD, and the additive space–I’m told I can do this if I use 3 HDs, and I got a “Sata 4 Channel” Raid Controller to set this up.
I must have dual booted using 20 literal or however many there were Beta builds of Vista and it worked like a charm. Every time a new build came out, I’d have to format the old one but it took not much time at all. The triple boot came as an after thought when I wanted to put a Vista SP1 on it–and wanted to see how it would work and it works like a charm.

And could you imagine sweet young S. with flowers in her hair going to a teen show featuring ruffians like these?
By golly, no wonder the swing swung right…

(laughing) there ya go with that assumption that i was sweet when i was a young thang. paul butterfield always does soothe. thank ye kindly
that depends on the codec used, other wise if there is a file available you should just be able to download to the local hard drive using FTP built into most browsers. or again Real player seems to work fine for me.
I don’t know much about forensic recovery. I wish I did. I know they are expensive, and I imagine the tools are too.
Mandatory reading as a Southern Baptist youth, then re-reading them a couple of times as an agnostic/pantheist/atheistic adult to realize just how sadistic, misogynistic, and contradictory they are. I’m a firm believer now that you can only read them as “anthropological” documents of several different eras (sadly constantly revised over time…so not very good at that).
They are not something any modern society would want to use as a model for government unless you wanted to end up like the Taliban. The only government mentioned in either the Old or New Testaments are monarchies, or Priest-run theocracies. Of course the early Christians might be interpreted to be communist ascetics who merely wanted to wait out the Roman empire until the apocalypse.
You can get a collection of some pretty eclectic, good music by just checking what shows up here late at night.
Well then, a last bit of soothing before I go, as justice for whitening your bad name, S.

That’s been pretty much my concept of the Bible too. But I was referring to Huckabee’s famous comment the other day that he wanted to remake the constitution to conform to the Bible.
How funny and ironic that a Republican trying to appeal to the Christian Conservative base would come up with a plan right out of the Taliban Training Manual. LOL.
Bill Maher or someone on his show tonight made the exact same point.

Hi Pete,
I’m unfortunately out of range of Fry’s. I used to shop their Palo Alto store until I moved to Central Oregon. I’ve had good luck with Newegg.com for hardware lately.
Ray– New Egg is a very good choice. Central Oregon must be a very interesting place close to a lot of great scenery.

Tonight I am trying to create a DVD of last night’s Colbert Report “Esteban and Lou Dobbs” show. I picked up the .avi via Bittorrent and it’s a lovely high quality version. It plays perfectly if I play it from my HD, but when I used Nero 7.0 to burn a DVD to pass along to a friend, I got a disc that “stutters” and stalls and will play through but isn’t very much worth watching.
Are either of you familiar with how to tweak Nero, or if there is a better choice of burning software out there? Thx.
Heh, I had Son House qued up earlier but never posted it.

Pete,
Re:
I once lived in Juneau, AK. It rained 300 days a year, and most of the rest of them were cloudy. I got seriously sick of rain. Bend is fantabulous for having sunshine about 330 days a year. 13 inches of rain here. Compared to 38 just over the hill in Eugene which is pretty drippy in its own right.
I moved here for the scenery and skiing in ‘97. By election time 2000 I was getting pretty bent out of shape about politics. I could see that the election was a sham, the media was a sham and just sitting around listening to Sam The Sham wouldn’t be the answer. So I took up activism on the Net, and then in the flesh in 2002. It’s been a real eye-opener. There’s an expression around about the Red States being Dumbfuckistan. Man, oh man, that is so true of Oregon east of the Cascades. There is a pathology to this place. The percentage of the population who are completely whacked-out ignorant Christian fundamentalists is probably on the same order as is the case for Islamic nutcases in Kandahar. It’s a bit scary to contemplate.
There is a tiny progressive community here, but it doesn’t seem to have grown a lot with the recent population influx. Fortunately, progressives control the City Council, but all other levels of government around here as pretty reactionary and right wing.
I keep reminding myself to smile, it’s another sunny day in paradise. Glad I don’t have to compete with the yokels for a yob. The union guys like to quip about Central Oregon being “poverty with a view”. So true.

I have been using Roxio 9 but it will only play on other pc’s as most DVD players don’t support the codec’s involved… that is one of the problems of downloading video. I haven’t tried to burn video with Real player but haven’t tried to burn videos with it yet… it does support it though… another experiment I can see…. will let you know in a latter post

Oh, Portland…
Here’s a good comparable. Last St. Patrick’s Day we had a glorious time in Bend with an anti-Bush, anti-imperialism, “Imagine Peace” event. We got one of our best turnouts, about 300 people on the street.
The next day I went to Portland for their Peace March through downtown PDX. We had 20,000 people in the march.
That’s it, in a nutshell.
Let’s leave the thought policing to the other side, shall we? :)
actually, ray, i am a moderator here and making sure that stuff does not violate the lake’s policy regarding racism in all of its forms IS part of my job.
Sorry Ray–I had to take my dog out for a short walk.
I use Nero (now 8) and it works great for most codecs but sometimes you have to use something else depending on what you’re trying to burn. I always try to go to their site to get the updates which removes glitches.
I think what you’re wanting to do is burn the video to DVD–that video has been making the rounds on the web a lot–I don’t know what version of Nero you’re using.
You can use Nero vision, but it takes a while to encode. There are a lot of Nero components I don’t even load, because I don’t think I’ll use ‘em.

Someone once did a survey of Americans and found that 90% couldn’t name two Biblical Kings and 80% thought Moses was one of Jesus’ disciples. And the evangelicals weren’t much better…a majority couldn’t even name a Old Testament Prophet. Knowledge of the Constitution, geography, history, etc. doesn’t run far off those stats either. It’s the steady diet of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and American Idol.

It amazes me how finger-wagging and domineering fundamentalists of the Abrahamic religions (Judism, Christianity, and Islam) tend to be. They tell us that God/Allah is almighty in one breath, and in the next they take it upon themselves to enforce His laws as though He were unable to do that for Himself and somehow needs their help. What kind of almightiness do they think He has?

Me I take what I have learned from the new gospel (parables) and find the meaning behind them… Jesus was completely non violent and his teachings were always gentle. Just think about the education level of those he was speaking to. I really don’t like what has been done by man in the name of god… consequently I am not a church goer but the lessons of how to live a fruitful live are there if you just let the meaning behind the parables guide you.. all texts have been written by man for their own benefit and those gospels that didn’t fit what they wanted were through out. I will do it my way and others can do what their way, but keep your forced teachings to your self and don’t try and foist it on me!

Per bonddad at the Great Orange Satan:
It’s a long detailed article that essentially says that some clever boys got rich:
– borrowing money from foreigners,
– knowingly re-loaning it to aspiring homeowners who couldn’t service the debt
– then selling those loans to “greater fools,” who felt safe because the debt “securitized” by (artificially) valuable real estate.
Ah the miracle of the marketplace, unfettered by government interference. Ain’t Reaganomics grand?

This may explain the Bushco corporate crony policy:
Fascism also operated from a Social Darwinist view of human relations. Their aim was to promote “superior” individuals and weed out the weak.[34] In terms of economic practice, this meant promoting the interests of successful businessmen while destroying trade unions and other organizations of the working class.[35] Lawrence Britt suggests that protection of corporate power is an essential part of fascism.[36] Historian Gaetano Salvemini argued in 1936 that fascism makes taxpayers responsible to private enterprise, because “the State pays for the blunders of private enterprise… Profit is private and individual. Loss is public and social.”[37]

Re:
In case you missed it, here’s the next one from the Colbert Report:
Esteban & Lou Dobbs.
Ledeen authored Universal Fascism: The Theory and Practice of the Fascist International, 1928-1936, published in 1972 —
One has to wonder about the mouthpieces of fascism today a national movement based on colors for terror alert. Limbaugh well funded and networked nationally and others like fox. One of the trademarks is dispensibility of the individual for the cause. Buying companies to form conglomerates. Remember:
William Edward Simon (November 27, 1927 – June 3, 2000) was a businessman, a Secretary of Treasury of the U.S. for three years, and a philanthropist. He became the 63rd Secretary of the Treasury on May 8, 1974, during the Nixon administration. He was reappointed by President Ford and served until 1977. Outside of government, he was a successful businesman and philanthropist. The William E. Simon Foundation carries on this legacy. He was a strong advocate of laissez-faire capitalism. He wrote, “There is only one social system that reflects the sovereignty of the individual: the free-market, or capitalist, system.”[1]
Dial-up: so, in other words, if I keep watching Colbert long enough, I may get to see whatever it is?
The process of conglomeration, (anti trust violations) broke up divisions sold off assests left millions without good paying jobs and broke unions. There is a parallel to the Musolini trade busting.
And Ronald Reagan, with help from Milton Friedman, managed to sell the free-market religion (aka “the invisible-hand job”) to the American people, who to this day believe that governmental interference would raise the cost and diminish the quality of healthcare, in spit of empirical evidence to the contrary throughout the rest of the industrialized world.
Barak Obama may have been correct, if unwise. when he spoke of the American people being ready for a change under Reagan. But I’m certain in a most unexpected way.
Given the fact that an alarming number of Amuricans have absolutely no idea what “empirical evidence” is and don’t give a spit about what’s happening in the “rest of the industrialized world” (let alone the non-industrialized world)…..those of us who do are well and truly SOOL.
In 1980, the baby-boomers, the first post-depression generation were getting into their thirties. They had known nothing but boom times, had flirted with idealism in the 60s and early 70s, but now was the time to make their fortunes, which they were sure would happen, and they didn’t want the government taking those fortunes away from them. They identified with the upper class because that’s where they were sure they’d be before long. It was class struggle, but based hoped-for class rather than actual class. Ayn Rand capitalism sounded very good to them.
————————
It’s nearly 6am and I can’t sleep. This sincere and unrelenting question about the authenticity of Edwards is haunting me. It’s a fundamental and serious question. If it isn’t answered there is nothing Edwards has said or could say which is relevant.
I can look at everything publicly known about the 3 main Dem candidates. I can say their rhetoric puts them left to right on the political scale or I can argue Edwards positions could be more to the right. None of that explains away Senator Feingold’s statement. I respect Senator Feingold and I believe he has put his finger on the question of this campaign.
We all know we need a change of direction for the country. Not only George W. Bush, but the entire period of time since 1981 has been a wandering in the desert, looking for leadership, in particular after the fall of the Soviet Union. We don’t often find politicians who are great orators and great presidents. One could argue that there was John Kennedy and Bill Clinton. But, we know Clinton made some rather egregious mistakes in cooperating with Republicans to the detriment of the nation. His repeal of Glass-Steagal, his military action in Kosovo, his passage of NAFTA and his revision of the welfare system are notable.
This year I can paint a picture that has Hillary Clinton clearly positioned to the Right, almost a Republican-Lite and clearly a status quo candidate. That’s not hard. I can also point to Barack Obama’s connection to Senator Joseph Lieberman and his many ‘present’ votes and his recent rhetoric about ‘reaching out to Republicans’ and argue he isn’t the best candidate. I can point to mistakes he’s made during the campaign and even to the use of race as arguments against him. I can’t so easily show he’s a phony or insincere. I can easily imagine John Edwards is a complete phony, as Senator Feingold and a handful of bloggers have written.
So, above all else, it seems completely clear to me that for anything John Edwards has to say to be heard he has to explain himself. He has to explain his senatorial voting record and how his current rhetoric can be different and yet honest and sincere. He has to lay bare his soul or give up the race and forget public service. The people might believe Obama is a safe bet, but they aren’t all ready to take any gamble on Edwards.
He should give a short speech and take questions from the press (who seem to dislike him so much). He should explain himself fully without trying to make an affirmative case for his campaign. He should be entirely focused on this one issue. If he can’t do this he isn’t worth spit to the voters. If he can he has a chance, not a great chance, but some chance.
Who are you Senator?
I say all this as a citizen who wants the best president we can get for these times in which we live. I say this as someone who wants to support John Edwards. But, in all sincerity, I can’t say my leap of faith to support Senator Edwards is comforting. I’d rather not have to take such a leap and I don’t believe the public at large does either.
It’s now or never.

Re:

Typical Line:
Colbert: Senor Dobbs, I see you have a new book called “The War On the Middle Class”… how do you propose we beat these bastards?
Oooo, that one sounds fun, also. Thankee for the taste.
They are going totally nuts here, wall to wall idiot local news dopes doing the same interviews at grocery stores and with the DOT. I’ve lived here 23 years and the way they freak out about the CHANCE of snow amazes me.
I’m a bit more simplistic. Edwards is the only candidate left who talks a progressive line, so he’s the only one might have a progressive agenda. And so, he’s my first choice. But the chances of him getting elected are slim.
So the most important question is which of Clinton and Obama is likely to be the least reactionary. Obama, with his RNC talking points, his attack on Krugman, and his paen to Reagan, talks a lot farther to the right than Clinton, who seems to be DLC (i.e., Republican-lite). That’s not a happy choice until you look at the freaks that the Republicans are putting forth. Then Obama and Clinton both look pretty good.
Damn I wish we could be voting for someone like Al Gore, Chris Dodd, or Russ Feingold.

Since 1992, the Republicans have been exceedingly clever in finding ways to raid the treasury for themselves and their constituents. I’ll have to give him that.
Meanwhile, it’s sounding more and more like Senator Obama is about to follow his mentor Leiberman across the aisle.
Yup, pretty much what I just checked – snow advisory ’til 9 p.m. – possible 1-3 inches. Re. your 242 – guess the difference in freak-out is between the flat-landers and the mountain people. And thankfully up here the outlanders usually go somewhere else in the winter or won’t get on the roads. Don’t listen to much local news (Aville) b/c the station is right-wing owned. You can gauge what the weather forecast is by the number of people lined up in the grocery store. *g*
Don’t mind the snow personally; it’s the black ice I loathe, hate and despise. Was heading to work back in the early 70’s before first light, did a 360 with the bonnet up against a rail overlooking a VERY deep drop to the Tuck. No damage to the car but figured I had just lost one of my nine lives.

Hell, this might have been Wellstone’s year if Cheney’s thugs hadn’t whacked him.
Would offer you whatever we might get but every drop of moisture (in any form it choses to take) is still far too needed in this neck of the woods.
Ray @ 252 -
Have you got any documentation on the subject of whacking?….have no doubt darth is capable of same. From the little I’ve heard/read about Wellstone, he must have been one of the last of the very good guys.
Going back to Obama’s quote:
I’m wondering exactly which ideas he finds so noteworthy:
– Rove’s many ways to disenfranchise black voters?
– Privatization of Social Security?
– Deregulation of the mortgage market?
– Any of the 300+ items on Hugh’s list.
– Any of Abrahoff’s clever schemes?
– Tom Delay’s many innovations?
– Slave labor and forced abortions in American protectorates?
– The use of torture?
There is no doubt they’ve been innovative and have challenged wisdom both conventional and unconventional.
Even so, there’s no way I’ll even consider voting for that man.
I once saw a list of U.S. political figures who’ve died in plane crashes, and it was truly staggering.
Re:
James Fetzer wrote a book on the subject.
http://www.assassinationscienc…..ation.html
Fetzer lectures here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vbf49kzWFw
Read about the anomalies. The AIPAC lobbyist at CNN, Leslie “Wolf” Blitzer utterly misrepresented the circumstances surround the sudden auguring in of the nation’s safest general aviation aircraft. The FBI Minneapolis field office responded with a team on site a full hour before they could have possibly arrived, had they left the instant the news was available to them in the Twin Cities. Fetzer has more.
Re:
Absolutely a stunning orator, fabulous humanitarian, ran for office from his college professor office, and regarded until 2002 as the “conscience of the Senate”. There’s a DVD out titled “Wellstone” that is a really good biopic. I recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired about what public service can really be about.
It’d be interesting to see that list…wonder how much could be chalked up to the possibility pols spend a lot more travel time in planes (vs. say, cars) than does the average citizen?
Re:
And if you correlate those deaths with political figures who were on record as being in oppositiont to intel community covert operations, you’ll find about a 100% correlation.

Good morning, pups. It’s Gail Collins and Bob Herbert in the NYT this morning. Ms. Collins has told me some things about the Nevada caucuses that I didn’t know before in her column, “Fear and Voting in Las Vegas.” Mr. Herbert points out that good jobs at good wages — lots of them, growing like flowers in a fertile field — is the absolutely essential basis for a thriving American economy.

Nope, but who says the waffle has to EXACTLY fit the waffle iron? I don’t demand that homemade food look like restaurant food. (If I did I’d starve to death!)
That looks like the list I saw. Notice that there are only about four deaths listed from ‘53 to ‘72.
