In response to a piece in Media Matters, I wrote the following and cc’ed Jonah:

MSNBC and Joe Scarborough ARE aware that Jonah Goldberg’s book “Liberal
Fascism” is a complete joke to the left blogosphere? The blog “Sadly,
No” especially, has done many pieces on it. The essential problem with Goldberg’s
claim that Mussolini was ever a liberal is Goldberg’s failure to distinguish
propaganda from fact.
To say that Mussolini was ever a liberal based on his many public statements to
that effect, is to give credence to phrases like “I’m a uniter, not a divider”
and “Iran has not stepped back from trying to pursue a nuclear weapon”
(26 October 07, LONG after the new NIE was common knowledge in the US Government)
and during the 2004 campaign, Bush claimed âNow, by the way, any time you hear
the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires — a wiretap requires
a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we’re talking about chasing
down terrorists, we’re talking about getting a court order before we do so.â
(We have dated the beginning of the warrantless wiretapping program to 11 DAYS after
the Bush Administration entered office).
The point here is that politicians don’t always tell the truth. They say many
things for public consumption that have little or nothing to do with their behind-the-scenes
actions or genuine beliefs.
If Goldberg returns to Scarborough’s program, respectfully request that a member
from “Sadly, No” be there as well to provide some balance and context.

To which he responded:

To which, yeah, he never calls Mussolini a liberal, but he fudges the distinction between socialist and liberal quite a bit, so I’m not quite ready to admit I’m wong on that.

In the past, voters have preferred to entrust the White House to those with executive credentials. John Kennedy was the last sitting senator to be elevated to the presidency. Since then, the former governors of Georgia, California, Arkansas and Texas have dominated the list of successful candidates.

All of them stumbled during their tenures in the White House, and only Ronald Reagan left the presidency with his place in the history books seemingly securely enhanced.

Apparently the WaPo spell check program replaces the phrase”Bill Clinton” with “Ronald Reagan”.

There is a netroots effort coalescing around Edwards and an attempt, planned for tomorrow, to eclipse Ron Paul’s one-day fundraising record. To my mind, if Edwards were to come out today with a hard-hitting, extended rant on retroactive immunity, the netroots fundraising for him would hit a frenzy that would be truly astounding. I urge those with direct contacts in the Edwards camp (e.g. ability to email Joe Trippi or Elizabeth Edwards and know that it will be read and considered) to make this plea to them this morning.

Again, sorry for the OT, but I know Firepups are interested in this issue. I’m going to give Edwards some $$ today and urge that he “rant” on this topic. Anyone with an in to the Edwards folks might want to make a contact.

Actually, I would like to hear alot more about the constant infringement of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights by this Administration from all the Dem candidates. I want them to stand up against a chief executive officer that breaks the laws he’s sworn to execute, and who has broken the public trust in so many different ways, including usurping the powers of the Legislative and Judicial branches. I want to hear that before I vote, so that I know they are aware of what abuse of power is, and that they won’t do it too.

I wasn’t thinking about the substance. I was thinking about the appearance. If he raised money on netroots in a highly visible way, then Hillary and Obama and the MSM would characterize him as way to the left of center, and divisive. Thus he would lose some of the middle class votes that he is after.

I think he will use the netroots, but not in the same was a Paul uses his supporters. Edwards is not an idealogue, and can’t afford to look like one.

As moderate as we know ourselves to be, the public opinion is that we’re socialists or worse.

constitutional protections have specific purposes and it’s better to point out the ramifications of violating the constitution rather then the abscure principle

Fair enough, but why not?

If it is, as Huckabee said the other day, “easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God,” what’s the basis for stopping at abortion or same-sex marriage or even at tithing or Sunday school? Why not push for an amendment outlawing homosexuality entirely? On the other hand, maybe God would be interested in passing the Equal Rights Amendment. How about a amendment banning the death penalty? Or maybe an omnibus amendment outlawing preemptive war, the touching of pigskins and the getting of haircuts?

I heard last night on the news (on Olbermann, I think) that the DOJ claims that the tapes are reused to record newer information over the old, as is the “industry standard,” whatever that means.

i agree to a certain extent that, but i question why the “center” is the goal… the center brought us bill clinton and the possibility of hillary. it leads to the amorphousness of obama. plus there are NO republicans anywhere close to the “center”… so what is the center except a form of republican lite?

in terms of policy direction, every new initiative that has become standard for the candidates come from left of center. and the longer that edwards keeps the tension on the left, the better- hopefully all the way to the white house.

This interview was awesome! In spite of the political issues surrounding the writers strike, I posted it on my own site because I felt like it had significant educational value. It was obvious that the cuts were due to Goldbrick’s inability to explain his position on anything. At the end, Stewart just leans back in his chair imitating frustrated boredom. Sheer genius. Highly recommended.
