I’m thinking of doing a post at my place about banning plastic shopping bags in ALL Alaska. Anybody here with ideas on how that works where they have been banned?
Christine, I got lost in google trying to find that restruant. It was named Couvé Notredam. couvé, if I spelled that right, is something like a batch Notredam was the owners name. So, something like “Notredam’s special mix.” Hopefully there are some language people here :)
I haven’t been to philly sine 97. I really miss the museums and easy access to NYC.
ET, good on you. Are those dreadful plastic 6-pack holders still being used on beer and cola cans? Aside from the obvious, those things are (were, hopefully) deadly around water critters.
In previous statements, former President Jimmy Carter – who has a global reputation as one of the foremost authorities on election procedures – has frequently pointed out that the United States of America does not meet international criteria for electoral security.
Thanks for the info tw3k, I’ll ask Patty about it. She needed to get to the Met recently, and took the Chinatown bus from Philly to NYC. Amazing, only $20.00 each way. See what cities can offer…
I got my first robocall at the end of last week – it was on one of the propositions and was full of that faux indignation that the r’s never tire of using.
Wow CT, that is cool. The New Yorker had an article some years ago about a man who “snagged’ bags in trees in Manhattan, much to the chagrin of his wife (who missed him). He invented a snagger that reached into trees…
Sure! The greyhound from chinatown is very convenient and much cheaper than amtrak. There is(was) a way to use the metro line but you have to switch trains and it was too long ago for me to give proper directions.
That is a great area and it good to hear that your daughter is marketing good use of it.
I got the union organizing gig. Don’t know if I can actually do it. It is an endurance issue more than anything. There are no “locals” anymore. I would be traveling around the country a month or more at a time. And the pay sucks. It is a salaried position. This means that they really don’t want to add up your hours. 60 hours a week is the norm. I object to this because if I worked on an hourly rate I would make a decent wage. Sort of pisses me off. I need to organize the organizers.
Everyone in EssEff has adjusted really quickly to carrying our own bags to the supermarket. The problem is, you have to be sure your baggers see your own bags before they get started. I felt so bad today — I had to run get bread, which I’d forgotten, and when I got back to the checkout the entire load of groceries had been packed into brown paper (still legal) bags, including my YKos bag with all my reuseable bags in it. Our Safeway employs people with limitations to do the bagging, so I couldn’t get angry — so we all just laughed about it.
If two cities as diverse as SF and Beijing can do it, so can Alaska!
For her recent birthday, my wife received a present from her daughter who lives in Chico, California. It was a ChicoBag, a reusable fabric shopping bag that folds up into a very small pouch that can easily be carried in a purse or pocket. It is made in China, but marketed by a Chico, CA company. Of course, if you are buying a week’s worth of groceries for a family of five, you would need several of these.
Betsy still here? IRT to a $500 student machine check out some mini itx/atx machines. I’m currently on that $200 gPC one.
Great for a student because they typically come with linux installed with access to many programming languages and environments. Additionally they add ram and video cards as their needs increase.
Congrats and sympathies all at once. It sounds wonderful, but when the pay sucks and the hours are even worse, one wonders. Still, what do you think? Sleep hard on this and decide with family?
Our kids got us to start doing it. Ms ET is better at remembering her bags than I am. Which is too bad, ’cause I’ve got real cool bags from Balducci’s (a deli in Greenwich Village) and Whole Paycheck Foods…
I do understand. This is how it would be if I wasn’t 58 and have physical junk going on. I want to do it. Five years ago I would have. I fear I will find myself in Colorado Springs, or Memphis, or Philly exhausted and out of funds. I hate to whine but I must be realistic.
* Common Cause issued a statement this week, announcing that former Rep. Jim Leach (R-Iowa) has been named as the chairman of the group’s national governing board. Think about that one for a second — a Republican who repeatedly supported Tom DeLay for the congressional leadership is now going to help lead a good government group.
I hate to say this…but I hate THAT song and it’s faux flamenco. It is played by every kid in every bus and tourist cafe throughout SE Asia. The only thing interesting about it for me any more is how the lyrics get transformed into completely absurd gibberish. How long have the Eagles subsisted on the same repetoire. Twenty odd years of touring (how many “The Final Tours”- and they finally have a new album…which has about the same stylisms that they had in 1980. Sheesh!
The best way to guarantee yourself of having funds in the future is to join a socialist revolution today. Are the Republicans going to honor their commitments to you? Of course not. They have a history of being frauds. You’d do better to join up with a socialist revolution that promises to preserve and protect all pensions, including yours, and social security, medicare and all People’s rights and give up on the status quo which is guaranteed to ruin you and me. George Bush promises to ruin you, his mentor Grover Norquist promises to steal your wealth and use it against you. What have you to lose by fighing against these bastards who would ruin you for lunch money?
It’s time to organize. It’s time to take our country back.
AND I was in California for the Reagan gubernatorial years and in the US for the Reagan presidential years. And yes I think everyone is very much misinterpreting what Obama said. The Reagan presidential years were the years in which it became almost criminal to admit you were a liberal. He DID change the direction of the country. Obama wants to change it again, in a liberal direction.
Disclaimer, again: I’m an Obama supporter. I was up in Carson City for his town hall meeting there. He discussed restoring civil rights, restoring habeas corpus. He’s a liberal. I don’t think the netroots are his focus right now.
The Reagan presidential years were the years in which it became almost criminal to admit you were a liberal. He DID change the direction of the country.
Hitler did change the direction of Germany. Lenin did change the direction of Russia. And, Ronald Reagan changed the direction of the United States.

oh damn. well, i’ll have to go watch one of the other versions to see one of the hands down best rock n roll guitar riffs EVER. great to see don felder doing it–he and joe walsh are magic together.
Random question (if anyone’s still awake): Has anyone noticed what a madhouse TPM’s comment section is? I just got yelled at by some Obama supporter for questioning his Reagan statement. What did he/she find most repulsive? Me quoting Obama!
Honestly, I’m amazed how insane people can be. They never address the question or criticism, just go off the rails.
Sara has a post up at TGNB about tweety’s female trouble:
Note to Chris Matthews: Any desperate hope you may have had that this whole ugly sexism business would just blow over — well, just give it up now. Because it’s not going away. And if a lot of really angry and powerful women have their way, it won’t go away until you do.
That’s what I like to hear. Sexist comments are still just A-OK in our society, and it’s really maddening.
Jimmy the Greek makes racial comments about black male athletes, he gone.
That schmuck Imus makes horrible racial and sexist comments about women college athletes, and he went but it took them a long time, and he’s back.
the real heat over imus was his racial comments and the fact they were women being denigrated was secondary. i refuse to watch him, just as i refuse to watch tweety any more. i catch maybe the last 30 seconds of his show before KO starts.
I never could stomach that ass… he a waste of my time, eyes and ears… I shudder when forced to watch him after the debates… I end up giving up on him and switch to music real quick like
That was John Edwardss quote.
But Joan Baez has a voice that takes you to that place where we all belong… brotherhood. She was so high up there in all the amazing things that were happening. That was a few links from where she sang in Italy “We will overcome” on utube.
It’s like this get up in the morning pull on your freedom boots and go to war for peace inner and outer battle in simulcast.
Thanks for all the memories. I did not make it to Woodstock but I wanted to and this is next best thing 38 years later…all good things come to he who waits.
Obama keeps talking about reaching across the aisle, but I don’t think he knows where the aisle is. So far as I can tell, he’s on the same side of it as DiFi, Pelosi, Reid, Specter, Lindsey Graham, Warner, Rockefeller, Bush, Cheney, Rice, etc., i.e., the establishment side. And he wants to effect change from there.
Fine. Let him reach across the aisle to Feingold, Dodd, Kennedy, etc. Show us some of that bipartisan-change leadership in blocking immunity for BushCo and their telco friends. Show up for the vote and lead the charge against continued funding for the war. Voting talks and bullshit walks. Let’s see some leadership for a change.
Yep. Very uncomfortable with the company he keeps in the Senate. And really, if it weren’t for that company, I might be willing to believe that, for instance, his bluster about taking an aggressive stance against Iran, was his attempt to not repel moderate hawks.
Suggestions that he hasn’t taken his cues from the likes RGJoe are so much “la-la-la, I can’t hear you” posturing.
He’s not the worst Democrat (although he is close) IMO, but his “appeal” as genuine leaves me cold.
What would think if one of candidates called for Bush’s Impeachment? And Got behind Rep Robert Wexler bid to begin Impeachment hearing in the house???
check out his website and his video there http://www.WexlerWantsHearings.com
And if you haven’t sign the petition.
Any democratic candidate who calls for impeachment and promises to prosecute Americans who have perpetrated or commissioned war crimes gets my wholehearted support.
You cannot really BAN them but here in Australia they charge 10c per plastic bag but tote bags are wonderful which sell for 99c each – they do have a logo of the marketer but it doesn’t seem to concern most people I see around – and they these bags are made of sturdy canvas, roomy, come in attractive colours – including green, blue, white, purple, pink, etc and very reusable and long lasting.
It is a persuasion tactic rather than an authoritarian ‘I say so’. It seems to work in big (by Australian standards) cities.
1?
Hi Suzanne. One of my favorite songs.
I’m thinking of doing a post at my place about banning plastic shopping bags in ALL Alaska. Anybody here with ideas on how that works where they have been banned?
TB! You are Numero Uno!
Hey Tex. Tis one of mine also. The accoustic guitar work just blows me away.
Me too!?
Ask Teddy cuz I think SF was trying that.
ET, San Francisco recently passed an ordinance banning all plastic bags.
Yeah, I read that in my research.
We are listening to “Brothers in Arms” by Dire Straits. Wow, what guitar.
Ugly at WaPo for the Thursday columnists line-up – Novak, Broder and Will.
Hi Suz! We saw this concert at Shore line… absolutely frigging great One I will not forget… at least until Alzheimer set in, then who knows:)
Besides China?
On the lawn up high, or down low?
I was there as well :-)
I wish I had seen it. I’ll just have to be content with my memories of Jimi at Oakland and the Beatles last concert – Candlestick.
Shee-it! Poor Suz!
ET, good on you. Are those dreadful plastic 6-pack holders still being used on beer and cola cans? Aside from the obvious, those things are (were, hopefully) deadly around water critters.
Quote of the Day:
Couvé is “incubated”. Might it not have been Cuvé (batch, vat, or tank)? Cuvé is often used in the wine industry for “special batch”
We have PSA’s saying; “If bags flying about and out to sea is not your bag, knot your bag…!” It’s pretty cool…
marymcc, left you something prevthread.
Thanks for the info tw3k, I’ll ask Patty about it. She needed to get to the Met recently, and took the Chinatown bus from Philly to NYC. Amazing, only $20.00 each way. See what cities can offer…

In the seats off a bit to the left but can’t remember exactly which row but it still was great. Shore line is a great venue …if you buy seats

No sheet sigmund. America is a joke. But the sad thing is, the inhabitants don’t get it.

It is a persuasion tactic rather than an authoritarian ‘I say so’. It seems to work in big (by Australian standards) cities.
