Excellent take downs of King over at Glen’s place at Salon. That a CNN reporter like King should release such a poorly written, sarcastic, arrogant, emotional defense to a first amendment litigator and popular liberal blogger – who would be sure to publish it – rather makes Glenn’s point about how sloppy King is.

The MSM just hate to be caught out not doing their work properly. And they hate blog media for making it public. The Kings and Tweety Birds and Russerts have made it to the top of the heap, so, like Bush, they’re supposed to be immune from criticism or consequences. Tough. Like every novelist, quarterback, stock broker and fire fighter, you’re only as good as your next story, play, deal or fire fight. Deal with it. Or Keith Olberman will get ya.

You’ll get no opposition from me on higher taxes on the rich and for getting more & better Ds in Congress. I was just trying to use language that’s less inflamatory, more mainstream, and code in the current political configuration to get what we want.

What you say about IPOs is accurate, as far as I know. First in gets 200% (or more) of the benefits, and those that follow get left flapping in the breeze. Where I worked, those who got the shares of the original IPO were the big clients, who mostly were institutional investors. But I’m sure a lot of rich individuals probably got in on the ground floor & then flipped out too.

A more moderate way of stating your point would be to ask your interlocutor how much of physical investment is financed through the stock market versus retained earnings of corporations. Remember that debt is also an important financing mechanism too.

The financial innovations starting in the 1980s have made it much more difficult to trace through any benefits to the real economy that stem from financial markets. That seems to have polarized positions between: financial markets suck and are a net negative to the economy vs. financial market are the all-important grease that lubricates the economy. Neither is a productive way to approach the subject.
