In case you missed it over the weekend, Greenwald took down John King, the CNN journalist personality, for his recent nausea-inducing "interview" with St. McCain. King didn’t appreciate Glenn’s criticism and has responded in a completely unhinged e-mail, which begins:
I don’t read biased uninformed drivel so I’m a little late to the game.
Take that, Glenn, you uninformed drivel-peddler! Because if Greenwald has any reputation at all it’s for being uninformed.
You really need to read the whole thing, but I love this part:
The portion you cited was aired by one of our programs — so by all means it is fair game for whatever "analysis" you care to apply to it using your right of free speech and your lack of any journalistic standards or fact checking or just plain basic curiosity.
So in other words, King’s upset with Greenwald because only the tongue bath portion of his hard-hitting, probing, take-no-prisoners interview with St. McCain got aired. Makes you wonder about the content of the stuff that didn’t get on the air, doesn’t it?
Memo to King: your beef should be with CNN, not Greenwald. In the meantime, instead of being St. McCain’s lap dog, why not start practicing some, you know, actual journalism?

Damn! Arizona is FAST today!!
Hey Blue Texan!
Ah yes, that Greenwald, noted for spurious accusations and no facts to back them up.
We are really seeing just how ugly a monster the mainstream media has become.
A pack of spiteful insiders without a shred of integrity.

I feel sooo bad when a journalist gets their feelings hurt. Poor boy.
I love also how King accuses Glenn of “bias” and asks questions like, “Isn’t it funny the Democrats aren’t talking about Iraq? Don’t you feel vindicated, Sen. Surge?”
Ass.
Well, AZ Matt, you’d expect that since the post is sort of about our Senator (although I want to disclaim any responsibility for McC in any way. He’s Senator in spite of me, not because of me. I going out on a limb here and say that goes for AZ Matt, too!)
Who are we, who collectively (and probably individually) know a lot more than John King to criticize the poor dumb thing? It’s not PC to be mean to your inferiors.
King stupidly tried to defend himself by claiming (probably correctly) that his work had been edited. But that defense doesn’t fly unless he criticizes the editing, which he did not. He merely claims that ex-post-facto editing relieves him all of responsibility for the final product’s silliness and therefore any criticism is de facto invalid. What a loser!
Never, ever voted for Republican in my life! Swear that on a stack of Bibles(various versions so as not to upset anyone).
Exactly.
He should be thanking Glenn, apologizing, and storming the gates at CNN for making him look like a total fawning jackass.
Poor John King…cut him some slack. He just got engaged to Dana Bash and probably isn’t thinking too clearly
OT
Rangel is going to speak to the New York Assn of Business Economists at lunch on Feb 4. Location is Harvard Club on W 44, $85 for nonmembers. Anyone interested? The meeting size will probably be around 60 people, so you can probably get your Qs asked & answered.
Yeah, it’s a shame to have to point out to journalists that they might not be ridiculed by us peons so much if maybe they weren’t so fawning, showed a little more skepticism, got out a little more to discover that they are not where 70% of the people are.
Heritage guy on C-SPAN2 is arguing that permanenting W tax cuts is key to economic stiumulus to avoid recession. LALALALA I won’t listen.
You mean do actual work?! Naw! That is too hard. You might have to talk to someone who is below your income bracket. You might get mugged! If you do go then you probably need hand sanitizer aterwards. Nope, better to just wing it, make up stuff.
and his new bride to be will get such a supreme package of excrement in Mr.King
gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what a supreme mess our shallow preening RICH AS HELL media is……..saw the cute Katie outakes at Huffpo 30 million dollar tinkerbell

No John, you manufacture it.. which is the point. Observing John King has always left me with the impression that he has no curiosity whatsoever.
Phone it in, like they all do, with the exception of David Shuster. If there are any more like him out there, I can’t think who they are offhand!

I’ll ask for suggested Qs from FDLers in advance.

Good Morning BT and Pups.
Quite a day yesterday. Gee. I’m so far outta the loop, I’m still proud of Greenwald and definitely proud of all the Democratic candidates for President.
I need to catch up.
I know where to find Mr. Greenwald.
Can you tell me where there’s video of the terrific combo on MSNB* late last night? That would be Pattycake Buchanan’s meltdown, with a side of Tweety’s manic-antics and a dash of KO’s giggle. I gather it was a doozie of a show, and I’m ashamed to admit I missed it on purpose, ’cause I was afraid I’d never get to sleep.
Sure is a shame about Johnny Kinglet. I hope he recovers his former -um- stature. And poor poor PattyBuch. I fear he may have broken a tonsil. Is it true Tweety blurted, at one point, “We have no candidate!?!”
S’cuse while I giggle along with you and KO, BT…
OMG! Frosting! Newsietrailer today (CNN? MSNBC?) just said latest polling indicates it’s a dead heat tw’ the top 3 Dems!
*faints* ;->
What I don’t get is the constant conservative claim that tax cuts increase tax revenues.
So they are for taking more of our money, just in the form of tax cuts.
-G
Oh, yeah. I guess I subconsciously put K.O. in a different category; something like “commentator” or “anchor” as opposed to investigative reporter.
From Glenn’s response:
“That love was glaringly evident in King’s “interview.” Judging by his response, King quite clearly knows this, too. It’s not actually that complicated. The next time you or your colleagues interview McCain, keep your affection to yourself; skip the part where you lavish him with praise; exercise journalistic skepticism; and just ask real questions.”
Oh Glenn, you poor dear. You are hopelessly naive, aren’t you? *g*
I have one question that I want to ask every candidate: “Do you support the prosecution of war criminals, regardless of nationality?”
Ann,
Did you see the grumping that the Maricopa County Supervisor have about the “self-promoting” booklet the District Attorny put out? He is only keeping up with the Toughest Sheriff in America.

Tom Johnson, who once ran CNN, confirmed to reporters a few years ago while he was still on the job: “Larry King is not a journalist. He’s a talk show host.”

Assuming your Q is serious & not sarcastic, the arguement about tax cuts increasing tax revenues centers on dynamic influences. That is, lower tax rates will stimulate economic growth by so much that: (higher incomes) times (lower rates) will result in higher tax revenues.
That is the mental arguement. The actual outcome is an empirical issue. In fact, the bulk of the evidence is against the mental model. For example, Clinton tax hikes were followed by higher economic growth and much higher tax revenues. But since so many different factors are working on the economy at the same time, it is difficult to isolate the influences of tax rate changes. Thus conservatives may persist in their model (which is an ideology, not a matter of evidence) no matter what.
Modeling schools.
“Mr. Rangel: Why are you really supporting Hillary Clinton for president?”
That’s it! Exactly! King fobs himself off as a journalist, and sincerely believes it. And CNN vouches for it. But, in fact, he was hosting John McCain, not journalistically interviewing him.
John King…..A bit thin skinned isn’t he? Can’t take constructive criticism gracefully. Makes you wonder how he ever decided to be a journalist. Well, he not really a journalist, he just plays one on teeveee.
I’m afraid I haven’t paid much attention to local politics since I stopped working. But with a publicity hound like Sheriff Joe in town, it would surely be hard for former mayor and current State Attorney General to compete for the title of blowhard. Besides, that isn’t my take on Goddard. I like him, alot. I would have liked to see him elected Governor when he ran, but that was not to be, then anyway. But Janet is the best governor, IMO, elected in this state since I’ve been here in 1985. That’s when Goddard was the Mayor of Phoenix. I thought he was a great mayor of a major American city with many, many growing pains, since this town’s biggest product is growth. So I’ll be sure to go thru the link you sent and check out what kind of fuckery the County Board of Supervisors are putting out this time.
Take a look at the picture of John King in today’s post from Glenn. Then compare it with this: http://gardenofpraise.com/art39.htm
‘Nuff said.

I saw that too. Looks like Kute Katie is a bit of a bee-yatch, doesn’t it?
Not to mention that she appears to be a person desperately in need of *getting* some news, as opposed to attempting to present it.
yes i believe so
she is EXTREMEMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMLY self absorbed it looks like
Wrong King, sorry… Mea culpa. That John King is also not a journalist. He never asks tough questions but always butters the toast of the person he’s “interviewing.”
Not sure that Q is appropriate, as it is an economists meeting, not a political one, and Qs will probably center on what Rangel thinks should happen to the structure of fiscal policy, including short run stimulus. But maybe I can figure out a way to work it in. (E.g., compare & contrast the economic policies of the three D prez candidates.)
But why do you think Rangel is supporting Clinton?

Glenzilla mentions something that is one of my pet peeves:
Adolph Hitler was critized by both the left and the right. Does that make him “fair and balanced”?
I truly apologize. Haven’t even had my daily cuppa yet. I was slumped in recliner, with 2 lapcats vying for my attention, and “surfing” thru channels with a gerry-rigged mess of cables & silly instructions from our ‘puter-guru-son for eke-ing the last eency bit of usefulness out of our nearly-dead tv (said cables routing our cable signal thru the vcr to translate into a live pic through the speechless, brainless tv).

Yes. See my 50.
What surprises me about all this is that King thought he had to respond to Greenwald. It’s not as if Glenn is a household name. It shows two things: one, that the infomercial media is paying attention to what goes on at these sites and are worried about how it might affect their bottom line, since they mainly cater to news junkies anyway; two, that from the stuff BT quotes, King is a real piece of work. These guys have had it their way for so long that they think it’s their way or the highway.
Think again Mr. John.
My (favorite) country congresscritter, Hinchey, is up to ask Qs on C-SPAN2.
The only thing this McCain lap dog is missing is the choke collar.
Hi. Back with coffee. ah! But not with particularly helpful news.
I meant to say before that the tv trailer about [latest poll(s?) showing a dead heat tw’ top three Dem. prez. candidates] was devoid of any hint about whose poll, exactly when, linkie, anything. I HATE that as much as you do! And there was no mention of it by hippydippyanchor droid.
Does anyone here know a good place we could go to track down such a poll?

“Recycling” just a cute way to say obstruction of justice..
Sorry, AZ Matt, I just read your link and apparently you were talking about a County Attorney publication. I don’t know anything about the County Attorney or the Supervisors, including their political parties. Guess I’ll go find out.
Tricky Dick should have just taped over that 18 and half minutes. If only he’d known.

They use ”tapes” and they ”recycle.” WOW.
Stop all contributions to NPR! National Public Radio has become National Propaganda Radio. When progressives and liberals begin to defund NPR maybe they’ll get the message. At that point I suppose they will merely reach out to Richard Mellon Scaife.

What the fuck has happened to professionalism in EVERY damned thing from journalism through politics to basic three dimensional thinkin’? We have a president whose personality and persona are duplicated in every area of public life…JEEzus H. keeeRIST on a God damned crutch but folks like John King and Tim Russert woulda been laughed outta the studio even in the banal ’50’s and certainly in the 60’s and 70’s. Where are the McNeils and the Lerhers and the first big duo (awe shit, I can’t remember their names now but they ruled the airwaves on prime time network in the 1960’s and 70’s until the one from the University of Minnesota died of cancer and his sidekick stuck around until they had ta mercifully take the formaldehyde syringe outta his hand and send ‘im on his way.)
Anyway, has anyone else noticed that since 1980 the level of professionalism and sophistication in public discourse and what we expect of our leaders has dropped ta somewhere around third grade level? In every area of life, the marketing of personality and likeability has taken over for intelligence and competence…anyone else notice that all this happened with the consolidation of corporate control of our lives with the ascendance of neo-fascism and Ronald Reagan?

Nuclear safety watchdog head fired for ‘lack of leadership’: minister

Federal Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn said Wednesday that he fired the head of the nuclear safety watchdog for her “lack of leadership” and “failure to manage the work.”

I thought this poll, posted last night, was interesting.
He spread the word that in 1998, he encouraged her to run for Senate from NY. He’s always been a fan of hers. I don’t know why. All he says is: “She’ll be a good Senator” “She’ll be a good President.” He’s already sitting on and running the most powerful House committee. And AFAIK, chances of him getting a cabinet in her admin is nil.
Some journalism is still going on at the WaPo..
707! = ?

Me neither, though I’ve noticed everything you’ve pointed out. Don’t know if I could get to your point in the context of the meeting. But perhaps I could find an opening to chat him up before or after the formal meeting. The key would be to craft a Q that’s likely to get an honest A, and I don’t know what that would be. Could you think of one? The one you originally suggested just won’t work because he’d give a vapid response. Also, guests of such stature often arrive at the last minute & leave promptly, so I don’t even know if there’ll be an opportunity for more casual interaction.
mebbe she’ll become the next co-host with regis, or an alternate, when that other tinkerbell retires.

You probably mean Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. The first time I noticed changes in the objectivity goal of journalists was following the first debate between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. I watched and thought Carter won with vastly more specific knowledge. Then I heard the ABC analysis and found out that Carter lost and that “There you go again,” was astoundingly great communication. The commentator, who I didn’t know, was George Will, who it turned out had coached Reagan for the debate. I was astounded.
Re:
Yes, but this should never stop us from making the case that tax fairness a la the Clinton example is in itself a stimulus to the economy.
Perversely, what rich people do is to hoard cash when the tax rate goes too low, and find tax writeoffs if the tax rate is reasonably high.
So, the higher the tax rate, the more that rich people are incentivized to invest their income in economy-expanding investments in order to avoid tax confiscation of their wealth.
Gosh, eCAHNomics. That seems perfectly crystal clear to me for the first time. As Mencken quipped, “for every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong.”
Perhaps you would be kind enough to tell me what’s wrong with my brilliantly simple analysis? Thanks.
An example of excellent practice of journalism, from the press gaggle on Air Force One today:
If you ever get a chance to chat him up, just ask him to give you three concrete reasons why he thinks Hillary would make a good president. But don’t sweat it. Just curious, that’s all. He never passes up a chance to talk up Hillary on teevee.
Cha-lee Rangel is listed here as a superdelegate supporting the Empress
Journalists used to be people with history or english degrees, if they
had college, who took a low pay job that put them on the street with
cab drivers, cops, working people in general, to cover the news beat
at all hours. Definitely not a glamour job… all that changed with the
TV curriculum at university, six and seven figure incomes and the world
of making a “reality” of Reagan as a POTUS. Kool-Aid in the watercooler
and here we are, bloggers have had to rescue a once proud profession
from the professionals. Nixon knew a thing or two when he created the
press room over the FDR swimming pool in the west wing, made them staff
gave them status up town… he was too nuts to benefit from it, but his
successors have mastered the art and changed the profession to that
of stenographer… 5 o’clock follies in Saigon sound familiar? Oh well,
I’ve said too much…
Thanks. It is indeed. The other “mystery” poll we’re also looking for is supposedly showing the top 3 DEMS. in a dead heat. Naturally, important to know source & credibility yadda yadda.
He didn’t just coach Reagan, he had Carter’s stolen debate prep notes
as well.
On topic: No idea, really, who John King is but if he is some CNN pundit I’m sure Greenwald would wipe the floor with the pundit after curiously spilling facts from his vast reserves of journalistic integrity.
John King = CNN “newsreader”, i.e., empty head who reads whatever is placed in front of him on the teleprompter.
Kinda like Little Boots in that respect.
I had forgotten that. I finally heard the ultra conservative argument which supports the whole change; that there is no such thing as objectivity so it should not be a goal among journalists.
Hi Adie,
Re:
Let me offer you a bit of perpective to go with your morning coffee. :)
Ciao!
Sumbuddy was wondering what candidate Bay Buchanan was “working” [I believe the word used last nite was “shilling” - heh] for.
Bay was burbling (?screeching? YIKES what a voice!?!) away on the telly this a.m., ecstatic over Mittie’s phenomenal WIN!!!
So there you have it.
I’d hate to be in the same room with her when she’s mad, if she sounds like that when she’s happy. But that’s just me.
Ironic, isn’t it? My reaction was exactly the same. Glenn Greenwald is a household name for me, but … John King? Who? And, I’m serious. I’ve never heard of him.
OT–
Breaking from AP:
Thanks! “newsreader” somehow I think the teleprompter would more interesting to watch.
Oh Dog. Make that Greenwa
kld. I want edit back. That is an opinion, not a matter of evidence. I agree with you on grounds that involve more than just economics, related to what happens to democracies when income distributions get too skewed to rich vs. poor. But that’s a poli sci arguement, and that’s not my field. As a matter of fact, Clinton’s tax increases were billed as deficit reduction measures, not as tax fairness. With the current configuration of the R party, raising taxes on the rich as a “tax fairness” measure is probably a non-starter politically.
I think you don’t characterize accurately what the wealthy do with their “marginal” income. All we really know is that the wealthy have higher savings rates than poor people. Savings are usually invested (e.g., stock market) which stimulates the supply side of the economy. That is not hoarding. There is an incentive to create tax shelters when tax rates on the wealthy are too high, but I think that is not an important factor with current tax rates well below 50%.
I agree with Larry Sommers, a point he made repeatedly on this morning’s JEC hearings, that supply in the economy depends much more on the strength in demand (mostly consumer spending), and much less on marginal tax rates. And especially now, the problem with the economy is deficient demand. Given higher savings rates among the rich, demand stimulus should be oriented toward the middle & lower ends of the economic spectrum, who are much more likely to spend it.
That is the Kool_Aid in the watercooler, “we make our own reality”,
and they called us hippies, go figure.
Now that’s a good suggestion.
Agree, but he also does a lot of on-site interviews. He never asks tough questions or even follow-up ones. A few years ago, when he was on air, talking with Carol Costello, who was in the studio of American Morning, Carol asked King a question. King replied: “Carol, I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He then repeated it. I was quite embarrassed for both of them.
:)
John King would bristle at being called a simple[ton] newsreader, even though….
He’s been known to stand out in the cold blowing snow outside the whytehouse looking dedicated and dashing as he reads in his upscale-looking best long bidness coat.
He also sometimes fills in at the ANCHOR chair, INSIDE! at the news desk!!!
Re:
It’s alternately called Nat’l. Pentagon Radio. We’ve thought quite a bit about the funding issue among friends in Oregon. Most have stopped ocntributing, but the problem with that is that Congress will never do the right thing and provide an adequate budget, and the corporations are being actively solicited by the management of Oregon Public Broadcasting without a hint of embarrassment that their on-air acknowledgement of sponsorship are growing ever more like standard commercial advertising.
Thanks.
the drivel made me do it.
Didn’t NPR get a HUGE donation from on of the McDonald’s heirs a few years ago? Don’t think they’re hurting for funding. My local NPR stations do a lot of their own, very good, programming & I support that, but wouldn’t give a dime to national NPR.
New thread
Thanks Ray.
Yep. I think I’m suitably skeptical at this stage of my life. I did enjoy the fact that the MSM actually noticed JEdwards for seemingly the 1st time. But I put no stock whatsoever in a quick trailer like that.
And polls schmolls is pretty much my attitude. Especially a poll that was undoubtedly a single-occurrance event, with no backup info.
I mentioned it here, and someone else quite rightly wanted a link to check it out.
Re:
I don’t care how it’s labeled, I just want the rich to pay their fair share. Recently Warren Buffett announced that in his office in Omaha that his secretary was typical of the staff, none with large pay checks and that she paid overall taxes at a rate of about 33% of her income, while Buffett paid a mere 17% on his multi-million dollar paycheck and nothing at all on the vast increase in wealth he enjoys every year. The system we have in place today is so perverse that Buffett cracks that there’s a class war on, and his class is clearly winning.
Re:
Now there’s a good argument for firing all the “R” bastards from the Congress.
Re:
That I find quite preposterous. For a short time I made my living as a stock market speculator. Never ever since I was a naive tyro did I believe that the stock market was anything other than a privileged gambling casino for the rich. My study of the markets led me to conclude that over the long run, 90% of all IPOs go tits up and the punters who get in after the initial bonanza for the issuers are all chumps, for the most part. The very best way for the stock market to pay off is in the fashion that Steve Schwartzman used it to capitalize on his interest in the Blackstone Group. I think you’d be very hard pressed to say that Schwartzman’s fabulous payout had anything whatsoever to do with his meager “savings” invested in Blackstone.
Re:
Joan Kroc donated $200 MM to the San Diego NPR affiliate. They didn’t share it with national system.
The Ken Doll Doth Protest Too Much!
You’ll get no opposition from me on higher taxes on the rich and for getting more & better Ds in Congress. I was just trying to use language that’s less inflamatory, more mainstream, and code in the current political configuration to get what we want.
What you say about IPOs is accurate, as far as I know. First in gets 200% (or more) of the benefits, and those that follow get left flapping in the breeze. Where I worked, those who got the shares of the original IPO were the big clients, who mostly were institutional investors. But I’m sure a lot of rich individuals probably got in on the ground floor & then flipped out too.
A more moderate way of stating your point would be to ask your interlocutor how much of physical investment is financed through the stock market versus retained earnings of corporations. Remember that debt is also an important financing mechanism too.
The financial innovations starting in the 1980s have made it much more difficult to trace through any benefits to the real economy that stem from financial markets. That seems to have polarized positions between: financial markets suck and are a net negative to the economy vs. financial market are the all-important grease that lubricates the economy. Neither is a productive way to approach the subject.
According to what I googled, San Diego got $5 million out of the $200 million, and national NPR excellence fund (or something to that effect) got the rest.
I stand corrected. I just got the initial reporting, and nothing after that. And god-damned Google for being such know-it-alls! (wink)
Wasn’t trying to catch you out, but googled out of genuine curiosity since my memory of the initial reporting did not mention San Diego. I would have googled it before posting my comment, but I couldn’t remember Kroc’s name. So, working together, we discovered the “truth.” *g*
Good catch!
“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Excellent take downs of King over at Glen’s place at Salon. That a CNN reporter like King should release such a poorly written, sarcastic, arrogant, emotional defense to a first amendment litigator and popular liberal blogger – who would be sure to publish it – rather makes Glenn’s point about how sloppy King is.
The MSM just hate to be caught out not doing their work properly. And they hate blog media for making it public. The Kings and Tweety Birds and Russerts have made it to the top of the heap, so, like Bush, they’re supposed to be immune from criticism or consequences. Tough. Like every novelist, quarterback, stock broker and fire fighter, you’re only as good as your next story, play, deal or fire fight. Deal with it. Or Keith Olberman will get ya.
Folks, I worked at CNN for 11 years. Y’all are forgetting one thing. All the “journalists” at that dinner didn’t “get” Stephen Colbert’s brilliant performance. That tells you all you need to know.
Am I the only one making repeated visits back to Glenn’s place, praying that King has written Glenn another e-mail?
I click on my Glennzilla bookmark, chanting “please be updated, please by updated…”
