What is different between 1964 and 2008 is that in 64 there was more diversity and independence in the media. Today’s media is corrupted and complicit. They have as much to lose in 2008 as the Republican Party and for that reason they will pull out all the stops to insure a Republican victory. For anyone to think the U.S. has a free press is just another myth that far too many Americans subscribe too.

He would be more in the dumps if he saw the NY Times-CBS poll released this weekend.

Party identification: Republican- 28% (up 2) Democratic- 40% (up 5) Indep.- 27% (down 4)

No group has been at 40% since Democrats in early fall 1996.

Still, no one should take anything for granted, I still beleive this election will be very difficult. It’s not unusual for us to lose 8 or more of our points crossing over to Republicans for presidential elections.

Our two front runners represent potentially controversial candidates and that means assess polls with a grain of salt.

Everyone should support whoever wins the Democratic nomination. I’m afraid, given the emotional involvement in identity and overinvolvement of independents, that universal support for the eventual nominee may not occur.

This is probably going to be a very difficult, very close election.

Re:

On the Dem side we have a woman and two men for candidates. Or, put another way we have a black and two whites. Or, put another way we have a southerner and two northerners… Perhaps just as odd is that the white southern man in the race is the most Progressive, rather than being a Conservative.

First of all, it is crucial for all Lefties to realize that all three of these candidates are righ-wing authoritarians. Frankly, there isn’t a dimes worth of difference among them. All will continue the Empire’s bidding and be no impediment to the destruction of the Republican for which we stand.

Don’t be fooled by their rhetoric. They may be the more kindly face of fascism, but that is just a pose. With any of these three you will get Wall Street continuing to dismantle the regulatory regime that was created in the New Deal to tame the excesses of predatory capitalism. With all three you will see continuing capital flight and offshoring of the great fortunes of America. With all three you will see the meddlesome nature of American militarism destroying innocent people across the planet who happen to have the misfortune of living on or near resources the Empire wishes to exploit.

Beware the Corporatist Party, for what you will see in the fall the choice of cloaked evil or a candidate making a blatant appeal to the creation of a proto-fascist dictatorship.

Re: Iskra

I’m about to found a newspaper here in Bend. We’re going to call it “The Spark”, because this town is too rich for a publication called “The Masses”.

The NY Times gave me an idea for the masthead. Their’s reads “All the News that’s fit to print.”

Ours will read: “All the News that gives you fits.”

Well, dog-coyote/dog-wolf hybrids are apparently all over the South. One of the biologists at U of OK when I was there was a specialist in the souther Red Wolf and he maintained that all modern specimens were hybrids.

Regarding canids…there have been apparently periods in the past when coyotes and wolves hybridized. And dogs are, of course, descended from wolves…possibly several times…starting about 30,000 years ago. But dogs and wolves are no longer NATURALLY hybridable. No dog could ever integrate into a wolf group, establish alpha male or female status and reproduce. And wolf-dogs usually have to be from a wolf parent raised from puppyhood to imprint on dogs, otherwise they don’t recognize the right cues. Dogs on farms probably would never mate with a wild wolf…they’d get killed.

It was largely created by a self-promoting British journalist, Elaine Morgan, not a biologist or biological anthropologist. It served as sort of a feminist rejoinder to many speculative ideas of the 1950’s…but sadly was just as speculative. In that sense it may have been useful. But it quickly was displaced by much more realistic ideas. One problem is that Morgan seems to suggest that everything in human evolution happened from one factor, and all at once. We now know that human evolution was “mosaic”. The split with the closest living Africa apes may have been relatively inconsequential, and bipedality, dietary changes, our increasing neural development, tool use, hair loss, etc. did not have occurred at the same time.

Since then biological anthropologists have actually focussed a lot more on female roles in Primate groups, as well as in human groups. New comparative methods have been developed which examines the distribution of traits in a group of organisms to determine evolutionary trajectories (cladistics). And our knowledge of human evolution, and the environmental conditions involved, has vastly improved. Today it’s really the fact that the problem is finding what the generally pattern is from a mass of details. We know so much, and the general outline is clear, but there are certain detailed debates (e.g. was there any hybridization at all between Neanderthals and modern H. sapiens; which of the plethora of Early Pleistocene Australopithecus is closest to our own lineages ancestry).

We live in strange times. It’s truly the weird Bush era.

On the Dem side we have a woman and two men for candidates. Or, put another way we have a black and two whites. Or, put another way we have a southerner and two northerners.

The black northern man is from the very highly Democratic state of Illinois. Chances of him having been elected to the senate from any other state are problematic. He smoked marijuana and used cocaine and admits it publicly. After Bill Clinton admitting thinking, merely thinking, about smoking weed and having problems for that, it is truly amazing that Obama is open about his drug use.

The white woman is from a Republican background and was a Goldwater girl! She is also originally from Chicago, but went to school in the East and then lived in Arkansas, but now resides in New York and Washington D.C. Her experience is primarily as a corporate lawyer, board member for WalMart and as a one-term senator, but most of all as First Lady for 8 years.

Is there any other presidential election in the past where candidates such as these would be considered viable?

Perhaps just as odd is that the white southern man in the race is the most Progressive, rather than being a Conservative.

Lord have mercy! Is the sky gonna fall next?
