Hey ES!
Hey ES
Eureka!
Sweet tune. And I like the collage.
Delurking…
I’m hittin’ it early, got that place to go to in the morning.
It’s bad enough they expect me to show up on time, but then they actually expect me to do something!
Gooooood Nite!
Eureka! How is it?
What’s on my mind? Nobody has attempted to do this before.
Nice. Do you also get into West African Music? I am a big fan of the djalis and the Mali blues.
Had graduate student daughter home for a week. She is in a program for students of material culture (decorative arts) in America. University of Delaware, where her parents met.
Not much. Just relaxing a bit after a nice long nap. And revelling in my SciFi nerdiness. *grin* The Terminator TV series started tonight. The Sarah Conner Chronicles. Of course, i’m downloading it since i don’t watch TV to begin with, too many damned commercials. Though i may look up the local air times so i can catch it when i’m not working too. If it’s worth it!
That and i’m still debating on whether it’s worth it to vote in the primary tuesday here in michigan. If i do, i’m likely to be in the Uncommitted crowd, mostly because i’m leery of voting for Romney even if our Democratic part of the ballot is bloody useless.
Wow!! I am so freezing…
WOW. What beautiful pics…and what an adventure. I’ve bookmarked it so I can read it fully later. Thank you.
Eureka!
How is it? Is this a trick question? *s*
Brrrr!
Well, back to work. I didn’t get anywhere near enough done this weekend. Best to you all.
g’nite busted
just finished reading comments in previous thread. kinda funny to watch the GOPness swiftboat each other. One group torpedoing McCain, another going after Romney. Who do they really really want to do the losing for them?
ET – Looks absolutely beautiful. Wish I were in AK right now.. I often sleep outdoors in winter. It’s to warm this year.
Nice. Do you also get into West African Music? I am a big fan of the djalis and the Mali blues.
I have a lot of African music on vinyl. Love it but don’t know a lot about it.
She is studying to be a museologist?
How wonderful, Christine! Carrying on the family cultural studies. Congratulations!
g’nite laura d
Good night, Laura. I enjoyed your exchange earlier with RooBradley?? Sorry, that name isn’t right…
Connoisseurship studies are the thrust of this program. I worked here in the library many decades ago.
Thompson. The lying sack of eye sacks.
BooRadley?
Yea! Thanks, so nice of you to respond. I miss it so.
Well I am done with the news. Time to get some sleep.
Dozens upon dozens of new posts are here. Six new ones today if you click my name.
That looks “more better.”
DWBartoo. Such a sweetie. His way of discussing ideas is so compassionate.
And now, truly g’nite. Wish I could stick around, but I haven’tt figured out how to get reports to write themselves….
pain free sleep wishes, tex
Can’t say I know a lot about it either. I really like the
Djali tradition of West Africa(widely dispersed as a result of the various Mande empires). Based on the kora (a 21-string lyre-lute) and balaphone (like a marimba). One of the major foundations for American jazz and Blues. Ali Farka Toure , who was raised a Djali (a hereditary Mande bard), took a liking to American blues and brought it all back home, creating a new guitar-based genre, Mali Blues. Recorded and album with Ry Cooder. His stuff is really wonderful. Toumani Diabate is an excellent example of the traditional style,
Ali Farka Toure Talkin’ Blues
Thanks Suzanne. Good night.
Absolutely beautiful! But for me seeing the pictures and reading the diary is as close as I will get to AK in the winter. ME and the cold and snow have an agreement, they can stay where they are and I will never bother them. Se real simple, I love to have my moisture that comes from the sky run down the sewer and leave. No shoveling, spreading salt, plugging my car in at night (just to keep it warm (does the car really care about that??) and any other thing that requires the use of multiple layers of clothing just to maintain my body temperature. Did I mention the blood in my hands and feet seem to have a mind of it’s own, at the first hint it might be cold it just heads for a warmer clime, whats with that?
Well the pictures are beautiful but I think I will just look at the pictures and stay warm and cozy here in California!
Afropop.org for all your music needs.

I got it already. Have everything he ever recorded that I can get my hands on. Check out Toumani Diabate, Boubacar Traore, or Rokia Traore for more traditional styles.
I love Ali Farka Toure!
hey nahant, alaska is on my list of places to visit and ET says if i get up there, he will take me fishing. i plan on going in the non-snow/ice season
I got introduced to Ali Farka Toure because I’ve been a huge fan of Ry Cooder since his “Into the Purple Valley” album in the 70s

Thanks for the links to the other African hands.
OK, I need to go to bed. Got a busy week finishing my wintersession class (14 weeks in 13 days, Yeee-Haa!), putting the finishing touches on my classes for Spring Semester (starts a week from Tuesday), and moving my office. Take care and enjoy the music.
Excellent!
Billy the Shitheel Kristol has his correction at the bottom of his column. Maybe my yelling at him last week made him do it.

g’nite dr (pause) dick – enjoy the planning of the corrupting of young minds
Tell me more about this. What does she particularly gravitate to, what art forms?
Another picker some might like is Bob Brozman, a master at Hawaiian slack key style guitar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
Some evidence that the classical form of West African griot music travelled north with the Almoravids into Spain. They had no gourds for the koras, so created a wooden equivalents called guitarras and lutes…they also brought poetic forms that replaced the long epic poetry and religious chants present in Europe until that time. These poetic forms contained romantic themes and praise poems with repeated verses called stanzas . Travelling musicians called trabadors carried these into the courts of Christian Europe. Today they form the basis of Western popular music.
Thus these two West African traditions, much changed and evolved, met again in the United States to form the essence of Blues, and, later, Rock and Roll.
Me to bed as well! Good night pups!
I was gonna mention that. ;)
g’nite c’ape
This may be way out of line, but I’ve always wondered if people like Ry Cooder didn’t borrow their work from real black blues guys that didn’t get the credit or the money. I’m not accusing, just wondering.
Night!
What and where?
“All the interesting music is coming from the frontiers of colonialism” –Musicologist, anarchist, anthropologist Bob Brozman
“Commercial music is designed to make people stupid.”
More likely that the knew Gods when they heard them.
Like I mentioned when it cold and snowing but during the summer well thats another story all together! But if I want to go fishing I visit my son in Portland Oregon, he is an avid sports fisherman. He goes as often as he can. He has a drift boat and lots of friends who love to fish and own sleds (not the snow kind). I was up visiting when he became a nurse last June and we managed to get a few days of fishing in. I got lucky on the Sandy river(water comes snow melt of Mt Hood) I landed a spring run steel head 27 inches. Great eating done on the barbie. Hope to get back up there come spring or summer for more fishing.
I only take people who I want to scare away ice fishing. You get the primo summertime salmon-halibut-trout combo, my dear.
Sounds great, where do I sign up… I did my ice fishing in Maine, never again! I will stick to warm weather fishing, well maybe slightly cold, ya know when you still have to wear the long johns in the morning and then slowly peal off the outer layers as the sun warms it up!
Freaking walking encyclopedia.
nahant, i get spawning steelhead in my creek. should be some coming through pretty soon after the big storm last week.
thanks et (big grin) i don’t think there is anything (other than a double dog dare) that could get me ice fishing (unless, of course, there was one of them ice huts with a heater and wifi)
Kristol corrects his mistake from last week, confusing creepy, rightwing moral nag Medved with attractive but bile filled rightwing cheerleader Malkin.
As to him and me. I saw him departing from the Ramada Inn in Manchester last Monday night and I yelled at him: “You screwed up your first cloumn in the NYTimes.”
He quickly ran from me. Cut and run. Probably because Frank Luntz must have told him that he was loudly berated on a streetcorner in front of a pack of Paulians by a 300 pounded bearded man who looks like Hezbollah ldeader Nasrallah.
-G
loohoo, i learn something new here every day.
My comic buddy jokes about ice-fishing saying he has advide for guys who enjoy ice-fishing: “Go ahead and get the divorce.”

advice…
“Cooder has been compared to a musicologist, exploring bygone musical genres with personalized and sensitive, updated reworkings of revered originals.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ry_Cooder
It has been my impression that Cooder has not been ripping off original artists’ works, but rather honoring them.
It’d help if you got s many people to donate to Diane Benson as has Suzanne. Here’s Diane’s web page. Benson is going to take Don Young’s place in the US Congress.
Hi Loo Hoo,
You have a reasonable concern. The sort of exploitation that you describe is certainly endemic to imperialist exploiters and the most blatant recent example is the race by BigPharma to exploit native cures in Amazonia and across the planet where there are indigenous healers.
I’ve been a fan of Ry Cooder since 1973 and I’ve made quite a study of his work as an ethnomusicologist. As with Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mombasa, there have been people who have talked of exploitation.
But the opposite is actually what is going on. Simon was wrongly accused exploiting Ladysmith, but that band would still be a regional sensation in South Africa and unknown if Simon hadn’t teamed up with them.
Cooder made an audience for Ali Farka Toure, and he’s done so for many other, most sensationally in the case of the Buena Vista Social Club. In that instance, Ibrahim Ferrer was a 90 year old shoe shine boy when Cooder traveled to Cuba to record them. Without Cooder’s input, the Buena Vista Social Club would have never happened. In the event, these communists have made millions of dollars because of Cooder’s intervention. If you call this exploitation, then I’m ready to be exploited to. The only problem is my skill is on the wrong style of keyboard…
My favorite fish meals include really good bread made into garlic bread spread after baking with blue cheese. A really good compliment to BBQed fish.
Well it has been a big weekend with company dinners, delivery of firewood, and getting up early this am to make breakfast for the youngest so he and his sweetie could drive back down to Orange(sounds warm) to college Chapman.
Good night all you pups and thanks for all the politics and great music shared by all This weekend!
Night night.
Night all.

g’nite nahart and gregb
Oy, ET. Reminds me of the ONE time I went ice fishing on Lake Bemidji in Minnesota as a kid. Seems like we had an outhouse sized building next to a perfect circle of ice cut out for the fishing. I was just 10, and it is a memory I will not forget, or repeat… (no potties, I distinctly remember!)
Night Suzanne.
:)
This is awesome. A musician who is just about a genius, and an anarcho-communist because it feels so right. What a video, this is unique in my experience on YouTube. This is the real deal:

[Some will find this a repeat.)
Ray, I think Ry Cooder and Mavis Staples album was my over all favorite last year.
drive by: nice tune, ES!
deploying spike strip
hey pun
I’m not clear on this. What are Paulians? Are you the 300 pounder rattling his sensibilities??
Oh my gosh, me too! Isn’t it great fun?
Just remember you can’t catch them, unless they re opened the season. Here in San Mateo county all streams are closed to fishing. Did manage do some fishing before they closed them but darn never caught any. I did catch a stripped bass 37″ in the slews of Redwood city near Pete’s Harbor a while back. Fishing here in the bay and out of Princeton just isn’t the same as it was in years past. My neighbor said this year the Salmon fishing was the worst he’s experienced in years.
Well good night again all you good pups!
catch ya next time, Suz. Sleep beckons.
Hi, pups. I’m back from my family visit and am exhausted. Between running after an adorable 2 year old and dealing with an ill elderly relative, I need a vacation after this vacation. It’s unbelievable I have to go back to work tomorrow.
am above the ‘dam’ in ben lomond so no fishing up here. just lots of folks watching fish sex
g’nite pun
spawn until you die! – steelhead tattoo
And keeping the work alive, I understand and appreciate. I’m just wondering about the greenbacks, you know?
You have such a way with words. Love it.
Oh you!
hey TOW – recovered from your trip?
The river and starry sky are calling my name.
Good night firedogs
Ray, I love the Buena Vista Social Club. Have the DVD. Thanks for your answer and expertise.
Proof again, huh, Suz? What an amazing crowd.
Ry Cooder did the soundtrack for Paris, Texas and I swear you can feel the heat of a Texas summer in that music. Blew me away.
tis true – there will be 6 or 8 folks standing on the bridge over the creek, watching them spawn. there is a spawning pool under the bridge that sees some heavy duty action.
g’nite eureka
Not even close. I’m glad I didn’t take my laptop with me since it wouldn’t have been touched during the week, and I feel really behind.
It was a good trip, but I’m drained.
advantage to not having a laptop and using a desktop – when i leave home, i’m not wired
disadvantage to not having a laptop and using a desktop – when i leave home, i’m not wired
Re:
Curiously, though steelhead trout are an Anadromous species, they do not have the lifecycle of the salmonids. Steelhead can spawn in freshwater and then return to the ocean.
The motto, ’spawn ’til you die’ is apt for chinook, coho, sockeye, chum and humpies, but not for steelhead.
Back to realityland. Never an exciting thought, even just after a weekend! After a full-on vacation, more difficult. You’ll make it, just tune in to FDL as needed. (Non-addictive prescription, at least physically non-addictive!)
this is true – they head back downstream after doing the deed – and look quite exhausted as the water carries them back to the river
Yup. Daily doses of FDL will help immensely.

So true. But right now, I’ve found, it is crazy expensive to use your laptop while not at home. Not in most parts of the world, but crazy expensive right here in the USofA. No wifi permitted here, without serious liability. THINGS MUST CHANGE IN AMERICA.
Terrel Owens had a Hillary moment, he was wearing sun glasses but boy was he crying because the media was asking about his vacation ” if you mention vacation it’s really unfair(voice breaking repeatedly)its just unfair if you mention vacation. What a fucking baby! I am glad he is not on the 49ers…. my first Obama ad hot shit the election is coming here to California!!
Well I mean it this time Good night… closing lap top crawling off to bed….
Jackie Speier kicked off her Congressional campaign for Tom Lantos’ seat in Foster City today.

Does anyone know how far Paris, Texas is from Palestine, Texas?
This T Bone Burnett piece is a chance for your daily two minute hate. The object of our hatred is George Bush.

Presidents come and Presidents go,
They rise like smoke and fall like snow
When you come out of this self-delusion,
You’ll find you need a soul transfusion.
The President is already gone,
He’s already gone,
And he’s Already Gone,
And he’s Already Gone.
Good f*cking riddance.
Exhausted and happy, I bet. :)
Nite, nahant.
Mine Teddy. And we are pleased beyond measure with Jackie!
Thanks Margot,

Little bit ‘o luck and we can party all night long…
In his song “Will to Love” on the 1977 “American Stars and Bars” album, Neil Young used an extended metaphor of a salmon swimming upstream to spawn. I could not find a YouTube of Neil perforning the song, only a couple of covers, but here are the lyrics:

Thanks, Teddy. Shot that off to the guy running against the devil of CA49.

Oh, for crying out loud. I thought you were being serious. jk!
My San Diego Chargers are doing quite well. Don’t know how that fits into your winning teams. I just know that I had to rearrange a family get-together that was planned for next Sunday because the Chargers won today!
Congrats Loo Hoo. Conference Title Games. The best weekend of the NFL season.
there is never any ‘down’ time for sports. as soon as football is over, its basketball and then the sport which must not be named until spring training starts.

Loo Hoo – The Niners and Owens and the local fans have a “very special” relationship. You would have to have been here to understand it.
It’s not that he cried, it’s that the smug Cowboys are out. Owens is just a symbol. But a damned convenient one.
ok pups, time for me to (sob) finish waxing the forking floors. the little cottage by the creek in the redwoods has to be looking shipshape by saturday. i seriously major dislike housework.
This, from Huffpo, then I’m off too:
Mullen, whose previous visit was in December 2005 as head of the U.S. Navy, noted that President Bush and Defense Secretary Robert Gates also have spoken publicly in favor of closing the prison. But Mullen said he is unaware of any active discussion in the administration about how to do it.
“I’m not aware that there is any immediate consideration to closing Guantanamo Bay,” Mullen said.
Asked why he thinks Guantanamo Bay, commonly dubbed Gitmo, should be closed, and the prisoners perhaps moved to U.S. soil, Mullen said, “More than anything else it’s been the image _ how Gitmo has become around the world, in terms of representing the United States.”
Critics have charged that detainees have been mistreated in some cases and that the legal conditions of their detentions are not consistent with the rule of law.
