In her campaign's first chaotic flailings after losing the Iowa caucuses, Hillary Clinton and her husband surrogates clumsily sought to differentiate her from Barack Obama by claiming bluntly that she was "a doer, not a talker." With the breathing space afforded by a week and a come-from-ahead-and-then-behind win in New Hampshire, they've found a slightly more artful way of questioning the value of Obama's indisputable speechmaking skills, as the Associated Press reports:
Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton suggested Sunday that Barack Obama's campaign had injected racial tension into the presidential contest, saying he had distorted for political gain her comments about Martin Luther King's role in the civil rights movement.
. . . "Dr. King didn't just give speeches. He marched, he organized, he protested, he was gassed, he was beaten, he was jailed," she said, noting King had campaigned for Johnson because he recognized the need to elect a president who could enact civil rights into law.. . .
. . . "If you are part of American political history, you know that speeches are essential to frame an issue, to inspire, and lift up," Clinton said. "But when the cameras are gone and when the lights are out, what happens next?"
As the Clinton campaign has been quick to promote, Hillary asked the same question specifically about Obama and Iraq:
[In 2002] he gave a speech opposing the war in Iraq. He gave a very impassioned speech against it . . . . By 2003, that speech was off his website. By 2004, he was saying that he didn't really disagree with the way George Bush was conducting the war. And by 2005, 6, and 7, he was voting for $300 billion in funding for the war. The story of his campaign is really the story of that speech and his opposition to Iraq. I think it is fair to ask questions about, what did you do after the speech was over? And when he became a senator, he didn't go to the floor of the Senate to condemn the war in Iraq for 18 months. He didn't introduce legislation against the war in Iraq. . . . So I think it's important that we get the contrast and the comparisons out.
Of course, if I were Obama, I'd be wondering, "What contrast?" After all, Hillary knows exactly what Obama did about the war after he entered the Senate in 2005. He was cowering in the corner, trying not to draw any flak... right behind Hillary, who was hiding with him.
If either one had possessed the courage to be a leader in trying to end the war this past year, he or she would have a much stronger case now. Instead, they're left to bicker over who was more of a political coward. In truth, it's probably a tie.

hi swopa
Swopa!
Swopa! Oh, wait…
Edwards for Prez!
Why is it always about Hillary and Obama? Isn’t anyone else running for prez for the dems?
ding!
I hate this. How about who’s gonna put more Bushies in jail? Why not run on that??
And as Frank Rich says,
In the nightmare scenario for their party, they could both fail or take each other out or self-destruct, inducing the public to settle for a Republican who can somehow persuade voters that he’s the change agent by default. It behooves Democrats to notice that Mr. McCain’s brand as a straight-talking rebel is so strong that even those voters in the New Hampshire G.O.P. primary who don’t like Mr. Bush or the Iraq war gave him most of their votes despite his outspoken support of both.
If either was a leader in any sphere of interest to national politics! Hill’s used her senate seat to finance her prez run & Obama’s been careful ever since IL legislature days to never vote on anything that might influence his prez run. And these are the D front runners. I’m so discouraged. (Although I do like precedence setting of female & black.)
A race to the bottom?
Nah.
Just standard political cover for a couple individuals who
Edwards is behaving like he’d like to be Obama’s running mate.
oops hit enter
…
a couple of indivuduals who have essentially been running for President since thir elections to the Senate.
While I expected more from my Senator (Obama) as Senator, the psoturing is expectable, if not respectable, from a Presidential candidate.
Were that we had a candidate with a clear and unambiguous stance from Day One, but last time I looked, Feinstein was not in the running.
Present.
You mean Feingold, mack?
That’s who Hillary should tap as her VP.
Rich’s analysis is completely bogus. Those are Rs he’s talking about, with such a piss-poor choice they had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to vote for anyone. (Even the wingnuts at the lodge admit they’ll have to hold their nose to vote in 08 prez.) H&O are both much better than any of the R candidates.
Of course, Edwards would be a much better choice.
That was Chris Dodd.
No, it’s not a tie. Hillary wins but not by much. When you want an office as much as they do, principles are quickly forgotten. Hillary never took a principled stand in her life. Obama did once. Hopefully, should he get the job he craves, he will rediscover the principles he lost on the way.
Well, in that case a three way tie, for last.
Here’s a stat for the “making us safer at home” crowd:
yeesh - can’t do anything tonite

Traumatised veterans ‘have killed 120 in US’
At this point, and a lot can change between now and the GE, unless Edwards gets the nomination I’m calling the GE for McCain/HuckaBee!
Obama has nothing to run on…nothing but ‘hope’. Voters are gonna want more than some ‘hope I don’t lose my house, hope I don’t get sick, hope I don’t lose my job….’ That’s NOTHING he’s got to run on!
The Hill, what’s the diff between her and McCain as far as The MeatGrinder? She wants to retreat and McCain sez we are winning. So does the corporatist press…so we’re winning. HuckaBee!’s ground troops will overwhelm what few folks ‘The Rabbit’ Emmanuel and the Dead Loser Caucus can put in the field because…..
Very few progressives are gonna show up to give Miss Nance and ‘SellOut’ Reid their ‘Supermajority’.
Four years of McCain/HuckaBee! and the country and the Dead Stupid Democratic Party will finally be ready for Edwards.
erm
as I said - I am not all here
What ever happened to killing them over there so we don’t get killed here?
Well….
Please send out for the rest of yourself.
New article up on the Clinton/Obama fight.
“The Clinton campaign, in turn, issued a statement by Robert Johnson later Sunday afternoon that sought to clarify his remarks and deny that he was alluding to any past drug use by Mr. Obama. “My comments today were referring to Barack Obama’s time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else,” he said. “Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect.””
President Obama or President Clinton. I am so beside myself with excitement.
McCain has it on his teleprompter….no fear. You will be hearing that and it will be garnering him votes.
That ugly noise you hear is me being sick in the corner.
Go Dodd! Maybe he should be Hill’s running mate!
Funny Man. :P

Beerfart Gloat-o-the-Week:
“New York Football Giants and the points.”
Didn’t need ‘em.
Phil Who? Eli’s goin’ t’ Disneyworld. Stop in and say hi when ya get here, Eli. And bring bagels!!!!!
AP - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton suggested Sunday that Barack Obama’s campaign had injected racial tension into the presidential contest, saying he had distorted for political gain her comments about Martin Luther King’s role in the civil rights movement.
Even though returning U.S. soldiers are killing us here?
It’s the first thing I read this morning. The bitch is that we know so much more than we did 35 years ago and, as always, “it don’t mean nothin”! Drive on.
I wish I could play in the sandbox with Obama and Hillary.
Dinner bell has rung (figuratively speaking). Back later.
Why don’t Obama and Clinton shoot themselves in the head instead of each other. Or maybe it would be six of one way, half a dozen of the other way.
Geez. Boring fools.
Us who?
then you’d have the MSM not reporting on any of them.
How many ‘folks’ know that?
And….
Didn”t affect ‘Nam as far as I could tell.
Korea nor WWII neither.
Drive On
I agree with Loo and Rich.
Not on the details of the two of them taking each other out. Even if they don’t do that, McCain could win. I wouldn’t underestimate McCain. Especially if “The Surge is working” continues to build to a crescendo.
Anybody see Michael Barrone on C-Span this weekend. Schmuck.
As I see it, Hillary was trying to say that Obama is running as a war protestor whose judgment was better than hers. He claims to have been passionately against the war but his subsequent remarks on it were not so passionate. Then he gets to the senate and has a chance to distiguish himself, to really take the lead against war funding - but he doesn’t.
You are right that neither of them has been leading in this area, not that it would matter with the Republicans holding everything up. But Hillary is not running as the passionate anti-war candidate.
That is how OBAMA distinguishes himself from everyone else. Now that he’s i the senate, he should be delivering the same kind of rhetoric on the senate floor and what do we hear from him? {{crickets}}
Whatever you think of Clinton’s war vote, and I happen to think it was a mistake, she’s been consistently opposed ever since. Yes, I want her to be more aggressive now and maybe she’ll see that there is no political downside to doing so. But Obama can’t get a check in the plus column for a vote he never had to cast and about which he has done nothing.
Sorry. I should write out “Loo Hoo” or say LH. No offense.
Greenwarrior!
Everyone is positioning for an appointment in a key position after the race. There can only be one winner in the end. What would Richardson like? What would Kucinich like? What would Edwards like? Edwards has been clear on his position and issues.
Hillary has some really questionable advisors. I don’t expect her to improve there. No one has had more opportunity to surround herself with good advisors than Hillary.
I think Edward’s is in for the long haul. He will bring some serious delegates to the table.
In the meantime, Hillary and Obama are eviscerating each other. This is who they are. They just can’t stop slicing each other up. That’s what we’ll get after the race as well.
Dodd/Edwards, or the other way around works for us. Obama we like you as a Senator. Same for Hillary. For president? Not so much.
I can’t wait for super Tuesday. Then I will know if I am voting for a Democrat, or casting my ballot merely against the Republicans.
Bush and Cheney have something locked away and ready to give up in October. McCain can win if the situation is right.
The major item on my list is which candidate is likely to punish the criminals in this administration. It isn’t going to be Obama, who apparently believes this get along with the r’s stuff he keeps spouting. Maybe HRC has will, but after Bill’s failure, I worry she’ll think she needs to move towards bipartisanship. Edwards has the edge here for me. If we don’t hurt them, they’ll be back.
Prosecute, or name and shame, but hit them before they can hit us.
The October surprise.
No problem. It’s my own fault for naming myself after Cindy Loo Hoo (who was no more than two).
What “didn’t affect Nam, Korea or WWII”? PTSD? Really.
Yeah. from his Senate record, I question whether he would have voted against it. He voted to fund several years later. What? Did the war look better then? C’mon. Easier to buy Edwards change (and apology by the way).
I think Wes Clark is probably #1 on that list.
I have about four and half hours left on my promise not to attack HRC. Soooo, I am unable to call The Senator from NY boring. But… I can refer to Obama that way. Senator Obama, you are terribly boring.
Prediction: Hillary will never become progressive enough to do that!
Will you be announcing your entry into the race soon?
Is that who that’s after. Really? C’mon. Really? I just didn’t want any of these wisenheimers sayin’ that a loo is the terlit in England.
Loo Hoo - Do you think Hillary and Obama will be the last to know because they would still be wallowing in the mud? They both feel out of control.
Oh heck. without reading any comments, I’m still with Edwards, with Dodd PROMINENT somewhere in the mix.
I gotta go afore i git in more trubble….
luv u guys. ;->
I can’t see an anybody + Edwards ticket.
Seems to me the reason neither of them are leading a peace parade is that if the October Surprise is a war that can be sold to the American people, they’re toast.
Never underestimate the stupidity…I won’t say it.
I gotta run. gotta go to ew an’ gloat about pickin’ the NY Football Giants.
Been there. Done that.
{{{{hi darlin’}}}}
The Wilson’s were working hard for Hillary this weekend in LV. Las Vegas should be interesting this week..Politicians and a P0rn convention.
Will you run on my ticket?
This will pass after February 5th, I hope!
I nominate Kiddo and Greenwarrior!
Second?
If Obama and Clinton take each other out, it will leave Edwards standing as the victor. I like that idea a lot.
Edwards/Dodd or Edwards/Feingold would work for me. But I’m a dreamer. :)
i think he meant that knowing it in those wars didn’t bring them to an end.
Las Vegas is a zoo in normal times. I’m expecting to have lots of good belly laughs. Reno is trying so hard. In the end, the gaming industry rules. They rule over the city council as well.
Hmmmm? Interesting idea.
Then they’d start taking each other out. Woman/Minority and all that. Sheesh.
I’m inclined to vote for Edwards here in Massachusetts on Feb 5. He might pick up some delegates. If he keeps scooping up 15-20%, he could use them at the convention to inject some spine into the eventual nominee.
Where’s CT?
Stupido, I call them. The two of them are stuck and that sucks.
OTOH - if they did run strongly for peace and act in the senate for peace and support dodd with fisa, that could create a climate that would make it harder for bush and the more evil one to start fucking with iran (for their pleasure and profit).
Yahoo!!!!! I just got off a phone survey where I stated strong support John Edwards, slammed Obama and Hilliary for their present campaigns, and all Republicans.
Licking my wounds from the drubbing my prognosticating inflicted this weekend…!
I’m scanning for him. Don’t see him yet though.
Do you think Edwards will have enough delegates to do that? I hope so. I’m afreaid though that Edwards gets ignored by BO & HRC unless they need his delegates to put them over the top and I don’t think that’s gonna happen. hope I’m wrong. I hope Edwards gets more outta this than time to make a stemwinder that msm will totally ignore.
indian prez with jewish veep. sounds like a winning ticket to me.
as long as you promise to stay alive. i’d prefer to be the veep. my first act in office would be to get rid of the man-sized safe.
I’m sure it won’t happen, particularly after this week, but if Obama and Clinton could get together on a ticket, it would be a steamroller.
LOL
Wow! Who was conducting the poll?
San Diego Super Chargers!!!
I don’t see any of those 3 as truly Progressive. If you want a Progressive,
support Dennis Kucinich. I can’t get the link thing to work, but here’s my .02:
http://airitoutwithgeorge.blog.....e-has.html
The two Demo frontrunners are in our view, a couple of very off putting characters. All they are doing now is screaming at each other. Let’s do issues you two babies.
in response to mack @ 22
Well….
Please send out for the rest of yourself.
And when you do find and return the rest of yourself, remember to leave yourself a nice tip…
I didn’t read all of yours at ew. just the one that counted. I’m not gonna do next week’s New York Football Giants game from the heart. I’m gonna logic it out. They lost twice to Cowboys in the regular season and won in the playoffs. they only lost once to the Packers in the regular season. Therefore……………. I’m probably gonna go with the heart.
At this point in the game, things seem pretty mild to me between Hillary Girl and Obama considering how close they are to Feb. 5.
After all, the scheduling has 4 quick states in a two week span of time and Sup Tue 6 days later (whatever in the world Michigan is with Hillary on the ballot, none of them going there to campaign) and both Obama and Edwards doing everything they can to get people in Michigan to vote for Mr. or is it Ms. Uncommitted.
And the irony is, that people already seem to have the idea who is running in the general on the Democratic side where there is far more interest than in any of the bozos running for the Republicans, and there has been only one caucus/one primary 5 days apart by Jan. 8.
I’m probably gonna go with the heart.
Sounds like the logical thing to do…
I didn’t quite catch the full name. The surveyer had a cold, and I missed the exact name. I did get Public Research group out of the name. They asked fair questions about all three candidates.
Second, already!
This is not gonna be pretty with the Queen of Diamonds and the Jack of Hearts. I’m sticking with Edwards.
go GIANTS!
Or maybe I should have said a Pair of Edwards.
I can handle that. But be advised Lahoma will be a major player. ;0)
Speaking of Jewish veeps..Wes Clark’s father was Jewish. Before Wes was a Clark he was a Kanne.
Name change?
This HRC and BO thing has gotten me thinkin’ about taking a break from FDL and C-Span and the all election coverage. i know I’ll see the headlines when i read the paper, but I’m really just tired of it and it’s just beginning. He can’t be mean to her ’cause he wants to look hopeful. She can’t be mean to him ‘caause that would make her look unhopeful. So they’re (to steal Suzanne’s word) sniping. Little digs. Almost like trying to inflict political death by 1,000 papercuts. And then I gotta deal with the media analyzing each one. I may just take a break. i think the answer is for how long. I’m gonna vote for the nominee anyway. As long as Edwards is being totally ignored, these two are boring me.
Same here in NJ, Edwards get my vote in the primary and the candidate gets my vote in November.
Loo Hoo - Don’t do that to me. My glasses are steaming up. Get me a cool glass of water (rapid fanning self).
What spot will Lahoma have in the Cabinet? I see lots of potential…
New York Football Giants.
To you, Marty Glickman. Cheers.
We need to send money to Edwards. Ignore the other two.
I know the feeling. But stay with us. ;0)
Sorry, QG!
Beerfart
I have taken a couple of breaks. I find that all I need is a few days. But I have an addictive personality.
She will be THE cabinet. ;0)
that, of course, will only be to everyone’s benefit.
Glad to see NJ move their primary up. Look what happend to me. I live in NJ my whole life and they have their primary in June when it is completely irrevant. So they move it up. So what do I do? Why move to a state with zero fucking delegates, of course.
Are the pollsters still polling after NH? Who’s putting their toe in the boiling cauldron?
I’m of a like mind. If I watch too much more of this, I might want to burn my vote with the Greens. I like Edwards and will tolerate the other two. But what makes me sad is that I wanted to vote on the affirmative, not another anyone but the gooper vote.
I’m afraid of that too. I’ll see a headline and just have to read the story.
