Hello, Links you want, here are some I have found:

In this link Ezra Klein analyzes how our own VA, CAnada and other nations handle health care (hint it’s not socialized medicine versus private health care):
http://www.prospect.org/cs/art.....of_nations

Business week article on the French health care system (and it is a no brainer, the French do it better for much less money):

Most of the basic research is indeed done in universities, at more cost than the “clinical trials”. It would be cheaper for everyone involved to just hire governemnt scientists to turn them into medicine and run them through the FDA - after all, there wouldn’t be the 2X marketing costs, plus the duplication in “me too” drugs.

Doctors are well paid, but a lot depends on specialty and your location. GPs, for example, are not that well paid comparatively and there is shaping up to be a real shortage of them, especially in rural areas and smaller cities. And there’s more to happiness than money, a lot of doctors are very unhappy with how much control they have lost over thier own practices to the insurance companies.

I believe law is the other place they stick the best and brightest.

I notice they don’t send them into science or engineering. Says a lot.

As I understand it most research is done in Universities, paid for by the NIH. Drug companies take the publically paid for research items and take them through the expensive clinical trials….

Please correct me if I’m wrong…

The “health care/medical care” issue is (greed) money.

1. Doctors are the highest net wealth group in the US, and don’t want to loose money. I know of no other profession where a doctor can graduate with $200,000 in debt at 28, and then earn enough to retire at 40.

I have a high schooler, and I’m surprised by the slant in the schools here to steer the “best and the brightest” into medicine.

2. Insurance is probably the second most profitable industry sector, after banking.

The US has a very sick social system, and conservatism is used to manipulate the system to preserve wealth.

A interesting solution would be for the winning democratic presidential candidate to reach out and ask Huckabee to become th vice president on the election ticket. Huckabee becuse he represents the socially conservative poor.

It’s health insurance on the car insurance model.
Anyone here happy with their car insurance?

I’ve got a pretty good idea how Geico will respond if my mechanic says my Honda needs a liver.

Not just that, but pharma spend twice as much money on marketing as research. And most of their research is on palliatives rather than cures, since curing someone means you no longer have a customer. The incentives are completely perverse. Most drug research should be done by universities and should not be patentable (use some rewards to direct research if you wish, but no patents.)

My apologies for missing most of the comments. I see you guys had a good conversation without me. I’ll write more on health care in the future and make sure to be around for the conversation.
