That article covers more than satellites. I well understand the march of technology in matters like this since I participated in technology at a pretty good level. I am simply pointing out that, given the choices at hand, covering your ass when doing anything like the Iran sailors were purported to have done would be prudent. I certainly cannot conceive of a large body of Naval vessels without air cover and electronic surveillance!
