How do we get out from under our $9 trillion dollar debt, solve the health care crisis and transition our terrorist-funding, planet-destroying, petroleum-based economy?
Capital gains tax cuts, baby!
Rudy Giuliani has launched a new ad in which the Republican presidential candidate pledges that his first priority as president will be a proposal for the largest tax cut in U.S. history one which would dwarf successful cuts by both President Reagan and President George W. Bush…
Giuliani’s multi-trillion dollar proposal, unveiled in a speech earlier this week, would reduce the capital gains tax from 15 percent to 10 percent, preserve President Bush’s 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, lower the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent, permanently eliminate the estate tax, and give taxpayers the option of choosing a simplified tax form with three tax brackets with a maximum bracket of 30 percent.
Good to see Rudy’s got bold new ideas to tackle the really serious problems that face our country in the 21st century.
Adds Giuliani: "I would lower taxes as President of the United States because it¹s not just an ideology or, or a theory for me. I made it work. I had results."
Based on his anemic fundraising, looks like he needs to give his campaign a tax cut.

Toobz are freezing. Off to read.
“Based on his anemic fundraising, looks like he needs to give his campaign a tax cut.”
That, and have his staff work for free.
Yo Blue Texan!
Rudy is a well educated buffoon. As is GWB.
Um… I thought bribery was against the law… “Elect me and if you’re rich enough you’ll probably get a refund every year.” Feh.
Rudy went to NYU law school, so I blame Greenwald.
“Look, I still got some asbestos stuck in my teeth…from 9/11.”
I heard the best comment about Rudy on Stephanie Miller’s show this a.m.
“He’s like Britney Spears. You want to help him but he doesn’t want to be helped. He can’t stop himself.” words to that effect.
“…and give taxpayers the option of choosing a simplified tax form with three tax brackets with a maximum bracket of 30 percent.”
Well, then, I’ll choose the lowest tax bracket. Yippie!
I posted this in an earlier thread:
He needs money first to get elected. Then he can make his tax cuts. Fat chance he has getting elected, even if he has as much money as Romney and Bloomberg. Which he doesn’t. He loses all around.
It would be great to actually have a discussion of taxes. The flat taxers who’ve hitched their wagon to Huckabee would create even more of a disaster for the middle class. But, once again, there are no substantive discussions, just slogans. No responsible look at the relationship between Reagan’s tax policy and the enormous deficits he left behind or the one Bush will leave.
This is just another reflection of the shallow knee jerk corporate media and shallow, knee jerk candidates.
Think it was Huff this morning (or maybe Salon) had a story that Rudy’s staff have to wait for paychecks. And by the way, that picture makes my head hurt. His teeth arrive in a room before he does.
Rudy’s campaign is in diarrhea straights. He got into Fred’s metamucil.
My good friend Nash blogged about this yesterday, also linking to this piece by George Lakoff and Bruce Budner saying in short, “taxes aren’t penalties for material success; they’re payments to support an infrastructure that helps to make material success possible. And the more one has profited from this infrastructure, the more one owes for its support. This is not theft; it’s justice.”
From the article:
OT & question for Biodun: Do you think that the Lawrence O’Donnovan statement in the previous post was intended to garner support by white men for Hillary? In other wards, O’Donovan as some pointed out is part of the big money DCC part of the party. By his telling Edwards to “get out” so as not to get in the way of a black man, who does this benefit? Certainly not Obama. Rather it (like the whole anti women stuff in NH) benefits Hillary.
Terrorist.
Jane, you didn’t read the fine print where he also says there is a deductible ( for men only) on married people for their mistresses.
;)
Glad to see he’s busy applying his idea of economics and budgeting to his own campaign, resulting in his having to ask his staff to go without pay so he could afford to compete in Fl. Of course, that only goes so far when it takes food off the campaign workers’ tables. That’s the way economics works, Rudy.
Looks like Rudy is aiming to take away Obamas hedge fund backers.
“Terrorist” is the new “commie.”
In order to convince people that continuously cutting taxes is a rational public policy, don’t you first need to convince them that everything they learned about addition and subtraction in the second grade is wrong?
Rudy is paying homage to Bush and the Bush Family by calling for more tax cuts. He will soon decide that he needs to be GWB and will pretend to pray.
Only idiot idealogues believe that X-A-B-C-D-E > X (where all values are positive).
Okay, that’s not a great bumper sticker.
Can I choose the 0% bracket?
Please forgive the OT Froomkin up “Bush coming Up Empty On Israel”
In response to Ann in AZ.. …You might have got his diet plan mixed up with his economics plan. Rudy has a plan for all of us, remember 9/11?
Ooo, Ooo I know,
It’s Simon bar Sinister from “Underdog!” Right?
Heck yeah. And we can all sell everything and pay almost no taxes! If you got something, okay. If you got nothing, tough.
Problem is, who’s going to buy it all? Oh yes, the Saudis.
Must be nice that all you have to worry about is paying fucking taxes.
The Saudis want all my old stuff? Cool! Garage sale time.
I guess that’s an excise tax.
I predict lotsa “fees” in President Rudi’s world. “Fees” to use the roads, “fees” to use the sidewalks, “fees” to use the parks, “fees” to pay our military. Lots and lotsa “fees.”
OT
I just have to get this off my chest. Today track star Marion Jones was sentenced to 6 months in prison.
Surely President Bush will not allow this travesty to stand. After all, he commuted the sentence of Scooter Libby who had been convicted of lying to the FBI and to a Grand Jury who were investigating the outing of a CIA agent. The leaking of Valerie Plames CIA status seriously jeopardized the national security of the United States. Marion Jones’ offenses of lying to investigators about the use of steroids and check-fraud pale in comparison.
I expect any time now we will hear from the President that he will commute the sentence of Marion Jones so she is not separated from her children just as he did with Scooter Libby.
Yes, but those fees wouldn’t affect the very rich nearly as much as they’d affect the likes of you and me.
A verb, a taxcut, and 9-11?
Well, that’s because rich people will use their money better than you and me.
Since this is bein’ digged and all, you might want to fix this up for all the new visitors, bt. Good post.
That’s right. While we waste our money on things like food, gas, utilities, and all the trappings of basic survival, the Rich get to support the economy by purchasing yachts, jewelry, art, designer clothing, and all the other goods that support the Robb Report and such.
“Bush coming Up Empty On Israel”
Gee, ya mean his incredibly complicated, nuanced, and thoroughly planned strategy of “hey, I want you boys to knock it off and be nice to each other, ya hear?” isn’t working?
Who’d-a-thunk it?

Such as a tiara!
Rudy’s tax proposals are so insane that I doubt even Grover Norquist would be fool enough to sign onto them. That being said, is Norquist part of his team?
another failure of noogie diplomacy.
Thanks for the reminder about Lakoff. I went to the Rockridge site linked in the article and they take you to a description of their book Thinking Points, essays on how to articulate the progressive viewpoint. Only $10 and at bookstores all around the country. I’m getting it.
Arianna Huffington I believe is an Obama supporter (she hates Hillary), so I assume O’Donnell might be as well. I don’t know for sure but I’ll dig into it.
The name of the bombing operation going on in Iraq is called “Operation Phoenix”…Phoenix operations have been ongoing for decades…it is an assassination operation…read:

You’re FDL’s Froomkin correspondent…
If by “I made it work” he means “I threw money away during a time of record tax revenues (although not on bagatelles like education or infrastructure repair or cost of living raises for city employees) to such a record extent that the guy who came in after me had to put through record property tax and fee increases to keep the city from going under,” I’m going to have to give him that one.
Well I’d just put it in an off shore account somewhere, never use it to buy things or hire anyone or anything like that.
OT: I am off to have lunch with Gnome de Plume!
I saw that and the first thing that came to mind was Gonzo lying to Congress..noooo problem. Marion Jones..six month in prison..Jeebus!!!
Yeah, for some people the rule of law is suspended and for the rest of us it isn’t.
One thought back to 95% taxes on income over $500,000, then there will be $$ to pay for things like heath care for all citizens and education for all citizens through four years in college. Also Corporations to pay the same ratio of taxes as they did at the end of WWII. Gee maybe we could fund more research as do all other countries! Those just for starters. Though out the rethuglians! Vote for progressive Democrats!
Thanks Biodun. Adriana has also had Dershowitz (sp), so not everyone up there is someone she necessarily agreeswith.
In my state, the Labor Code makes it illegal to not pay your employees at least twice a month. It also makes agreements where the employees would agree to go without wages – null and void as against public policy. And, a violation is a misdemeanor for which the fine is up to $1000 per person unpaid, per day unpaid.
Rudy, now a petty criminal, too.
another failure of noogie diplomacy.
well, he could never have seen *that* coming…
P.S. I am so stealing “noogie diplomacy”. LOL.
You’re welcome, carmen. Yeah, good stuff there!
That is the Republican way. Slash taxes for the rich, with a little for the middle class so you can tell them you cut “their” taxes, and either skip putting anything away for a rainy day (if the economy is good) or defer maintenance on everything (if the economy is bad.) Then when your Democratic successor actually cares about making government work, blame him/her for raising taxes. It’s a twofer!
He also apparently thought that when he visited the Palestinian territories, a joke about how his motorcade didn’t have to stop for any checkpoints would go over well. Really.
Huckster’s new ad has the tagline he used a coupla weeks ago that I love: “Most Americans want a President who reminds them of the guy they work with, not the guy who laid them off.”
Todd Beeton at mydd sez it’s freakin’ brilliant and I agree.

And would Rudy’s plan get rid of the AMT too?
Yep.
Green is the new Red.
And the greatest domestic threat to America is….?
Nope, not Osama or Al-Quaeda wanna-bees.
Nope, not the guv’mint hating paranoid armed to the teeth “compounds” scattered around the backwoods.
Nope, not Timothy McVeigh or his admirers.
The FBI sez: “The No. 1 domestic terrorism threat is the eco-terrorism, animal-rights movement.”
[note the deft conflation of all animal rights activists with “terrorism”]
Yep – tree-huggers turned arsonists.
Green is the new Red.
When fear of Islam won’t keep the budgets going, a good witchunt here at home will do the trick.

Now, that was weird. Mods, I was replying to kirk murphy@67. Now I’m replying to myself, and no kirk murphy in sight.
P.S. I am so stealing “noogie diplomacy”. LOL.
all yours!
A hard-refresh should solve this. Kirk’s comment is visible.
Ah! All is well with the world again. Thanks, mods.
Tax Cuts On Steroids
I’ve always felt the tax rate on steroids was way too high.
OT..Here is the transcript of Cuomo’s “comment”..was it “dog whistle” against Obama? I don’t know..but it is less certain now in my mind.

This is a general statement applicable to all sides in the Demcratic Party.
It’s great to see the Democrats embracing the California strategy that destroyed Phil Angelides and allowed a victory Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Proceed firing away at all the Democrats weak points.
Looking forward to the McCain/Bloomberg Unity Tour.

The phrase “shuck & jive” is racist on its face. No dog-whistle required.
. . . on 9/11.
Well, that and 9/11.
He’s been spending money down here in northeast Florida like a drunken sailor. I would have thought his money would have been better spent elsewhere, like in the panhandle area with that message of his, 9/11 all day and everyday. Watching his ad you would never think another issue even mattered. Well, enough of that.
He’s done. And everyone knows it.

Give him a break. Remember 9/11!
You’re pretty far afield from 9/11 here.
Hi, everyone. Did someone say, “9/11″???
Jeez, even Reagan conceded that shit doesn’t work.
OT, and sort of a rant.
Here’s a pipedream.
Imagine FDL going an entire week without posts or commentary on the horse race and the distractions du jour — the latest campaign gaffe, stupidity, or puffed-up controversy committed by candidates, their spokesmodels, or our blinkered media — and instead devoting post after post on the genuinely important issues of the day and the Democratic candidates’ official positions on them.
One after the other. In depth. And when it turns out that a candidate’s position on a subject is ambiguous and/or insane, we perhaps convene a blitz of calls for clarification or correction.
Not just the positions of those Democrats still running, but also those of candidates who’ve dropped out but whose ideas are worth sustaining, examining, and, as needed, throwing in the faces of the remaining contenders (cf Kucinich on impeachment and single-payer, or Dodd on the Constitution).
Nothing but substance. No polls. No talk of tears, or shucking and jiving, or sexist provocations, or responses to sexist provocations. No balance sheet on fund raising. No acknowledgment or ridicule of anything said or written by any pundit of any stripe. Those could be addressed to anyone’s satisfaction a gazillion other places. But not here.
Just positions, demands for clarification on the positions, and informed (and doubtless impassioned) responses to those positions.
One life-or-death subject at a time.
For just one week.
Could it be done?
Here? Anywhere?
[end pipedream]
That was my impression.
Realize all your pipe dreams…
If I were KOS, I’d be pushing for a Huckabee win in Michigan. Romney can spend his own money.
Huckabee would force the GOP to choose between spending money or sitting it out.
-G
And by the above, I’m not in any way implying that FDL lacks substance. But imagine a post lining up the Clinton, Obama, and Edwards health plans in detail, side by side. And similarly for Iraq withdrawal plans.
And nothing else.
Like one of those detoxifying diets.
I don’t know if it’s doable or even desirable. But there are days when I grow so tired of the horse race and the sideshows and the inability of even my top go-to blogs to ignore them.
Fair response, but then it would buh-bye day job.
By the way, I can smell Giuliani burning from here.
-G
Ya! now schwartzenegger want to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and the middle class, cut funding for medical and pull 4,000,000,000 out of education. NO New Taxes the rich don’t have enough $$ they need more for their yachts. More rethuglian wrong headedness.
Greg we in California need to figure out a way to start a recall on this asshole. Maybe on the late late late night we can engage in a conservation on this subject. I am just sik of this crap from the RW.
If supply-side really worked, Arthur Laffer would not be so obscure today. The real reason Republics like it is that they get really rich when it’s in play. They really don’t care about anyone else.
Plenty of that stuff does go on here. Given that we are in the heights of the primary campaign season, it is only natural that substantial attention is given to the “horse race”.
What a novel thought…It would sure be interesting conservations!
I’m all into piling on. Besides, I loved KO’s remix of Rudy’s new commercial last night.
Y’know, this one.
You can get all the 9/11 you could possibly want, there.
Didn’t Ghouliani say that his health test results would be coming out after Christmas???? Whatever happened? I’m wondering if he’s going to bail out and go back to his private business life with Judy…
LOL! As Christy once said: This is Jane’s livingroom, and no one should telling her what to do in it.
The problem with detox diets is that they’re so intense they can only be sustained for short period of time. We keep to the light side quite often to avoid pure burnout. We go over plenty of substance during the day and someone up above has it right. Right now the horserace IS substance. Particularly our criticism of it.
The irreverence is needed. What’s a day without satire and laughing at idiots and fools? I can’t be serious all the time, and even the substantial posts here during the ‘working hours’ of FDL? Are downright hilarious. US politics takes itself way too serious. Mocking it is only right and fair, considering so many of see the end of their boot or the short end of the stick.

That’s why I suggested no more than a week. Maybe it could only work for a day. And googling the body of my blog commentary will reveal not just an appreciation but a firm dedication to the lighter side. And I know and respect that this is Jane and Christy’s house; my pipe dream is not directed toward any one blog in particular. I cite FDL because this is my primary (no pun intended) hangout.
(It could also be that I’m just desperately burbling to avoid work on an especially mind-numbing PowerPoint presentation; caveat blogtor.)

“Can I choose the 0% bracket?”
Only if you are very, very wealthy. :-)
On comparing health care plans:
Would it be alright to put up Edwards plan and then wait six months before putting up Clinton’s copy and Obama’s close try?
After all, that’s how it happened in reality.
