After 7 years in Afghanistan, no end in sight:
The Pentagon is preparing to send at least 3,000 Marines to Afghanistan in April to bolster efforts to hold off another expected Taliban offensive in the spring, military officials said Wednesday...Last year was the most violent since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
Nearly 5 years after "Mission Accomplished", Americans are still dying in Iraq:
Nine American soldiers were killed in the first two days of a new offensive to root out al-Qaida in Iraq fighters holed up in districts north of the capital, the U.S. military reported Wednesday...All indications are that al-Qaida fighters retreated north from Diyala, presumably to Salahuddin, before the offensive began Tuesday, the top U.S. commander in northern Iraq, Maj. Gen. Mark P. Hertling, told reporters in Baghdad.
"Operational security in Iraq is a problem," he said, noting that the Iraqi army uses unsecured cell phones and radios. "I'm sure there is active leaking of communication."
I'm getting to the point where the first Democratic candidate that expresses the appropriate level of outrage at these calamities gets my vote. Sens. Obama, Edwards and Clinton? I'm waiting.

Zed?!!!
So what I want to know is why the Rethugs still think we can “win” in Iraq and why the traditional media never ask them what that means.
Thanks to the Dem videographer that got McCain on tape saying we could stay in Iraq for 100 years. Yeah that wouldn’t encourage muslim extremism at all.
Oh and that last post. Mwahaha!
They say some bullshit like, “a stable, democratic Iraq that can defend itself and fight terra.”
I’m going to go with “no Americans getting killed” myself.
“Operational security in Iraq is a problem,” he said, noting that the Iraqi army uses unsecured cell phones and radios. “I’m sure there is active leaking of communication.”
All of those goddamned pallets of cash and we can’t buy secured cell phones and radios for the goddamned Iraqi army?????
There are also reports of heavy US aerial bombardment–40,000 pounds of bombs in or around Baghdad. These were to hit “Al Qaeda” hotspots. Of course that flies in the face of the statements that Al Qaeda was all but done in Iraq.
I mean these people, Kristol, McCain and much of the media were reporting that the surge was a success and the war was over.
When will people learn the Charlie Pattern with these folks. Over and over and over again with the lies.
There is indeed no end in sight and all we hear from Bush now is an escalation of threats and rhetoric against Iran.
-G
Charlie Brown pattern…..
Seeing as how they have no history of democracy whatsoever and we have to change their entire culture, to which there is just a tad bit of resistance…um might take the 100 years that McCain is willing to stay there.
Do you think he could add up the money he is willing to spend and try to sell it that way?
Personally I was against it from the start if for no other reason than the opportunity cost. Imagine the gold plated toilets we could have in the pentagon if we didn’t go to Iraq (snark). Well if not gold plated toilets, maybe some healthcare for kids and maybe a few cancer patients too.
I am just saying!
Thanks for the post Blue Texan!
2 lost wars you can add to the ignorant bastards resume.
The guy is an epic failure.
Epic.
If they couldn’t get good radios in NY why bother giving them to the brown people over there.
Juan Cole:
Oh, come on! The surge is working.
Holy Joe says so:
http://online.wsj.com/article_.....79631.html
This whole business is getting to look more and more like the Thirty Years War, which is about the closest parallel to what we have been witnessing over the past seven years. It’s the perfect storm of international politics and religion. The big and thankful difference is that unlike that conflict, which involved France and the Habsburgs, we are not yet in direct conflict with the Russians, who could if they thought it was important to their national interest, easily ship arms to the Taliban.
We need hard thinkers in the next administration, who can see through the fog of ideology to the underlying realpolitik of our greatly eroded position.
The reason why we have a State Department is to prevent debacles like this. Oh, I forgot. We don’t have one anymore.
And one year after Bush announced the surge, Pelosi notes this:
There’s more at the link, in a fact-sheet, bullet-point kind of style, with links and citations to back up her quotations and stats.
It’s fine, as far as it goes. Sadly, it does not go nearly far enough. The only “failure” she notes, is a failure on the part of the Iraqis. Surely the fine minds that conceived and continue to push for a failed policy deserve a little of the credit, don’t they?
This begs another question, Madame Speaker: why, given the failure you outlined, does the Congress of the United States of America continue to fund such a failure?
I think the “no history of democracy” thing misses a more critical point. The bigger problem is there’s no middle class. They’ve fled the country because BushCo has made such a mess of everything. And it goes without saying there’s no MC in Afghanistan.
No functional middle class, no functional democracy.
Unfortunately I think that you reap what you sow. We have sowed much misery in Iraq and other places. No suprise that we are facing resistance to an indefinite occupation. No surprise that we are now facing a terrorist threat.
Now, the Chimperor is in Isreal to bring peace before the end of his term.
Why do Presidents at the end of their terms think this is doable?
Why not try to end tooth decay in Kentucky? That is much needed and doable.
That is putting it mildly.
100 years may be optimistic. The Brits tried their hand at the “Great Game” in the middle of the 19th century. How’s that working out for them?
Understand the snark, but when it’s our troops getting killed in joint operations with the Iraqis due to security leaks, it seems the goddamned Pentagon would get a bloody clue.
The most corrupt administration ever.
I equate the war with a rape in the middle of the night except in this case the rapist surges sometime in the night then as morning comes we tell the victim to get over, it get cleaned up then go fix me some breakfast.
As seen on CSPAN’s Washington Journal this AM, Conrad Crane from the US Army War College thinks the staggering successes he sees in Iraq can apparently best be measured by the number of Tootsie Pops our troops are giving to Iraqi kids.
Mr. Crane was shocked by the amount of success he saw in iraq. He always knew we were gonna win, but the amount of success currently being displayed is astonishing and jaw dropping.
Well it is as criminal as they firefighters on 911 not having them, and as criminal as the humvees not being armoured properly and well…the whole war is criminal on so many levels. From the war profiteering to the war crimes of torture and indefinite detention. Many, many war crimes.
No functional middle class, no functional democracy.
Another shocking demonstration of the shock doctrine’s suck-cess…
Holy Joe is coming to Phoenix for an A*PAC event sometime this month…. Wonder if good buddy St McCain will be there too…. did not remember the date but I bet our peace group will be protesting the event….
A local Iraq vet calls McCain …. Bloody John McCain..
Asiatimes has a great analysis of Bush’s two-faced peace/war tour of the Middle East.
Bush as Captain Ahab.
-G
Shock doctrine was a success for the big international co’s who got the Iraqi people’s treasure at a discount. Not so for the democracy.
From that article:
“Thus, in a careful pre-travel media stage setting, in addition to leaking a Pentagon plan for the invasion of Iran via Iraq, named “The Big Right Turn”, Washington orchestrated a flurry of activities aimed at conveying the impression of “mounting tensions with Iran”, which convenienced Israel’s get-tough approach with regard to the Palestinians.”
Does anyone know anything about this?
-G
as someone said earlier…the surge is working
we are still there
ot
the media is pimping the kerry endorsement but this from msgobama’ web site
is more important
“California congressman George Miller (D) is also backing Obama’s presidential campaign. This is perhaps the closest thing to getting a Nancy Pelosi endorsement as you can come without actually getting it. Miller is incredibly close with her politically. He wouldn’t be doing this without her consent of sorts.”
GregB @6: “There are also reports of heavy US aerial bombardment–40,000 pounds of bombs in or around Baghdad. These were to hit “Al Qaeda” hotspots. Of course that flies in the face of the statements that Al Qaeda was all but done in Iraq.”
NPR this morning also reported that several citrus groves were destroyed in the bombing.
Terrarist limes, lemons, and oranges. I’m feeling much safer now.
You left the authorship out of your post so we could get look who’s
going together moment at the link. Thanks for the treat!
Republicans have been touting the success of the surge, e.g.: http://www.nypost.com/seven/01.....136042.htm
Wexler disagrees: http://www.gather.com/viewArti.....4977224520
As does Reid: http://firedoglake.com/2008/01.....nt-1195414
The mainstream media like to say that the surge has been a military success (a 75% drop in fatalities for the past three months), but has not yet achieve political success. The fact is that, as troops end their tour of duty in Iraq and come home, we do not have sufficiently many troops to replace them. We are being forced to withdraw wihtout having achieved our mission. In the rest of the world, that’s called “defeat”.
Bush: “I’m a war president. I have war on my mind.”
Us: you’re a failed warmonger! and a failed president!
That photo puts me in mind of Steve Earle’s “Rich Man’s War”…
OT Kerry is announcing for Obama (Don’t know if this helps or hurts him) - but it looks as if by the end of the campaign there was no love lost between Kerry and Edwards.
NPR this morning also reported that several citrus groves were destroyed in the bombing.
Wonder if they’re using napalm?
Mark Penn is riding high again. With his Iraq war supporting, fear mongering candidate. And as to rock star Obama? He’s a real pip too.
Another OT (sorry Blue Texan) but I don’t know where else to put this:
I see the tee-shirt ads up at this site and they look pretty close to the edge of kiddie porn. I don’t mean to be a “prud” on this, but the facial expressions, poses, angle of shooting, age of the models is pretty out there. Even as ads, I don’t think this ad speaks to who/where most of us are.
It seems that whenever we send our own troops in to do something the US casualty figures mount. So over the last couple of months of the surge Petraeus has turned over large sections of the country to both Sunni and Shiite militias as long as they promised to keep “foreign fighters” out. The Shiite groups have started jockeying for control in their “zones of control” while the Sunni have taken it hard from Al Qaeda…and are yet to be recognized as members of the Iraqi National Guard. The US pays the regular “Defenders” US$300/month, a small fortune in Iraq, and supplies them with arms. Yet they face decapitation, bombings, and kidnappings of family members.
And there is no sign that Maliki’s government will allow these units to continue or bring them into the Iraq military. He has said they will be disarmed when the ING is ready to take over. That could result in a fresh outbreak of revolt, this time from forces trained and supplied by the US.
ON topic: That is a fabulous photo at the top of the post - and a GREAT post (and topic). Thanks Blue Texan.
Let me see if I get this straight. HRC and Obama are the best my party can come up with? Whoever wins the presidential sweepstakes had better clean up the Iraq mess and our economy. Otherwise that prez will be a one-termer.
That is almost the same article that was written three years abo by Rich Lowry and was on teh cover on The National Review.
“We’re Winning”
They ignore the facts that if the strategy is working why are the Iranians feeling so gutsy as to harass US naval vessels.
Why is the situation in Afghanistan such that the US is planning on a surge there?
Why is Pakistan destabilizing precipitously.
Why are terrorists using Iraq as a safe-haven to strike Turkey and Iran?
Why is Al Qaeda still releasing videos?
These were all areas that were supposed to have been made better by the US/Iraq war.
-G
Terrarist limes, lemons, and oranges. I’m feeling much safer now.
And to the families who owned those groves, bombs away. Of course their homes/property were designated Al Qaeda hotspots. How will we ever know that designation is accurate?
Well it just is, ok!?!?
Am going to drive in to work now before I start some major cursing of this morning’s news. Read you all later
Gawd, I hope we don’t see any more photos of naked little kids running in fear and agony.
And no, I will not quote Robert Duvalle…*g*
Obama, Nancy, Harry and Hillary. Doesn’t get any better. Right?
I am curious about something. At the time of Bhutto’s death, someone here I think indicated that as of January the US had secured the right to have troops in Pakistan. I read this as implicating Cheney to some degree in the death, because no way would Musharaf let US troops in (and risk the HUGE flack locally) unless there was something else at stake.
Does anyone know if there was such a troop agreement? If there was, don’t you think this could be part of why this is happening now. In short, they can go at this situation from both sides of the frontier.
The thing I like about my party’s (Dems) two frontrunners is they are so very vibrant and dynamic. Just bubbling with new and viable ideas. Such statespersons.
Bush true to his Orwellian form has named a US General as the the monitor of the the roadmap to peace.
-G
I can’t begin to guess what these people have up their sleeves anymore.
Well, other than war profiteering and general mayhem.
Look for the whole region to continue a downward spiral now that Reverse King Midas has committed himself to bringing peace.
Always expect the opposite.
-G
Per McCain and Lieberman: “Gen. Petraeus’ leadership this past year, and the conduct of the troops under his command, have reminded us of our capacity for the wisdom, the courage and the leadership that has always rallied our nation to greatness.”
In fact, Petraeus’s only success has been that he decreased fatalities, both Iraqi and U.S., from their peak by 75%, and that decrease has been sustained for three months:
http://icasualties.org/oif/IraqiDeaths.aspx
http://icasualties.org/oif/US_chart.aspx
By contrast, there was a 90% reduction in fatalities when the British pulled out of Basra.
More to the point, Petraeus got much of his reduction in fatalities by withdrawing from Anbar province and arming, training, and funding the Iraqi insurgents who had been killing our troops and threatening the stability of the Iraqi government. Given that the stability of the Iraqi government is, per Bush, the objective of fight in Iraq, Petraeus tactic for success has to be seen as a retreat from our objective in this war. Moreover it must be seen as an act of treason:
That’s why they only let us see the *happy* photos of soldiers passing out tootsie rolls…
I gotta go back to work. And I am glad. Why? Because the excitement over the two frontrunners is almost overwhelming. I need something to calm me down. Trig and algebra should do it.
That speaks volumes.
Why Kerry wouldn’t endorse his former running mate.
John Edwards’ Changing Tune on Iraq
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11.....nted=print">Edwards and Kerry - A Mismatch that Haunted The Campaign
Given that the stability of the Iraqi government is, per Bush, the objective of fight in Iraq, Petraeus tactic for success has to be seen as a retreat from our objective in this war.

Kerry and Edwards- A Mismatch in a Lost Campaign
The other thing that Petraus did was to cordon off every sector of Baghdad so hat no one could get anywhere. If you want to consider urban areas as a warren of non-interlinking cells where people are kept semi-imprisoned for their own good and that of others, then OK, whoopie, what a success!
Associated Press Jan 10 10:37 AM US/Eastern: “JERUSALEM - President Bush calls for an end to what he called the “occupation” of Arab land, referring to Israeli military control over the West Bank.”
Whaddya mean? There’s nothing quite like solving the quadratic equation for x to set the blood to pumpin’.
Richmond, read this analysis about Pakistan from the Asiatimes…this one focuses on Pakistan.

With warlords and thugs as their helpful, friendly neighborhood watch.
Seems to me there were Soviet Politburo members calling for sustained occupation in Afghanistan and insuring victory there shortly before the Soviet empire collapsed. Hmmmmmm.
Very interesting article. Thanks!
I doubt Bush cares about the deaths or the wars. None of his family or relatives is willing to even pretend to serve. While I’m not suprised by that, I remain suprised that their lack of service is not even an issue.
Thank you Blue Texan. Continue this topic and let’s probe deeper.
While we are raising our voices and demanding an end to war, the War College is in full swing making long term plans for Iraq among other countries. It’s their business. Asking the War College and Foreign Policy Board to think outside the war box is asking them to give us their relevancy and lucrative dollars.
Yes, corporations are part of the war business but our own government agencies are in control of keeping war alive. It doesn’t matter who we put in as president, all they can be is an empty voice. They can either cheer on the war business, like Bushco, or wag their finger at big bad war while war plans are implemented.
I make it a point to listen to the War College panelists on C-SPAN because from them I know the plans for the next hundred years. That’s where McCain got it.
We forget that a president can be marginalized by greater forces within the government. Truman said the great mistake he ever made was to approve the CIA as a secret organization. He said a secret organization has no place in a democracy. The NSA was not created by the president and his cabinet. It created itself, separate from the government, and took matters in its own hands. They was great upset in congress when they flearned what the NSA was doing but congress was marginalized and the NSA continued in secrecy and illegal activity.
The War College operates much the same way. It has its own objectives regardless of the body sitting in the Oval Office. No matter how sincere and committed any of the Democratic candidates may be on ending the war in Iraq and bringing the troops home, that person has little sway with the War College.
Could we have a thread on The War College, its members and its objectives?
GOL (Grrrrrr out loud)!or is that SOL (Snark out loud)? good one.
Another OT (can’t concentrate on 1 thing this morning). Up at Kos, possibility if Hillary loses that she will be installed as Majority Leader in the Senate. Help! No! Could be even worse than Presnit because she will oppose, down-tone every initiative for change. http://www.dailykos.com/storyo.....948/434330
Jenna pretty much told us that we’re too stupid to understand why she can’t serve. But she “understands” why we don’t understand.
We are trying to stabilize Iraq’s government by arming its main enemy, the Sunni insurgents. And we are sticking around to keep Iraq’s civil war from becoming too deadly. In the meantime we are arming and training fighters on both sides, which will to nothing but maximize their lethality. What insanity!
I agree. That ad sends the wrong message. I do not mind subsidizing Coulter but she’s an adult.
Now… I really get pumped solving for XY and Z using Cramer’s Rule. And the unit circle is the next best thing to nirvana. I’ve got two minutes ’til my next class starts. I love my job. What’s the difference between Hillary cubed and Obama cubed? ;0)
If there was a god, the earth should’ve opened up and swallowed chimp whole in “the holy lands,” QED. My atheism remains intact.
The Irakis of course don’t warrant even a passing mention.
Erdla
And, by the way this finding that Blackwater is using gas is a BIG deal and should be brought to Congress. If we are going to use privateers, they need to be brought into the chain of command. They are REpresenting us as much as the U.S. military is to the world. Who commands them in these contexts and who do their commanders fall under? Who decides what missions they do and how?
Hey! Credit where credit is due please. Two lost wars and one lost economy. That trifecta is nothing to sneeze at! You could go with Two Lost Wars, One Lost Economy, and One Lost Constitution and make it really bigtime.
2863
And it is in the details of these losses where all the “fun” begins to show!
Hillary gets nailed well and truly.
http://www.salon.com/opinion/p.....=whitelist
Every time the CIA is “all over the place” they are there to create chaos on the ground. This is what they did in Indonesia and the classic example, Chili. In the fifties, they were crawling all over Vietnam. Bless Graham Green for memorializing the CIA’s activities. The Quiet American is as timely today as it was in 1955. It is the CIA signature mode of operation. And so it is in Pakistan.
Please show your work.
Or the sum on Hillay cubed and Obama cubed would be hydrogen peroxide.
John Kerry is hoping that Obama gets your vote. (Kerry throws Edwards under the bus.)
“John Edwards is not a viable candidate at this point.” –Andrea Mitchell to Monica Novotny on MSNBC this morning.
H is the 8th letter of the alphabet. O is the 15th. 15^3 - 8^3 = 2863.
LOL -very nice!
So true.
Andre Mitchell is not a viable reporter/journalist. Who died and made her Queen? I guees being married to the former Fed Chairman lets you chose the candidate for America.
you made me go to Camille Paglia
now I have to go throw up
It’s true that she said that. It’s outrageous that she got away with saying that. We should be demanding that every Bush serve in Bush’s war, but we won’t. When it all dies down, we’ll all just go back to accepting that the Bush family is honorable because of service during WWII. Disgusting.
But what’s he doing with the other hand?
New Rasmussen for SC (per TPM) bounce for McCain but none for Hillary: Obama 42% (+0), Clinton 30% (+0), Edwards 15% (+1). Survey was completed yesterday.
We’re not too stoopid to understand why Jenna “can’t serve” in the military. It is because the military and fighting wars is for the little people. It isn’t what people of her “stature and potential” do, sillies.
Barbara Bush has also told her that it would be wrong to dirty her pretty little mind with the realities that her family foists upon little people.
Good morning, all.
CIA creating chaos on the ground?

Must see video
http://www.boomantribune.com/s.....6147/71670
Did you see the date on that Obama piece? We have gone through this who business here alot. I would say that Obama and Edwards are our (Dems) best bets for ending the war - which is why the Bloomberg people at AIP*C are putting out there that he will run - and potentially throw the election to McCain.
I’m not a Hillary fan, I’m an Obama supporter. But I thought that Salon article was pseudo-psychological bullshite.
LMAO
Astonishing video, thanks eCAHN. Highly recommend.
Camille Paglia is a self-serving drama queen. She is just silly and irrelevant.
Bush couldn’t possibly do it by himself. It’s Congress’ wars too; they’re the ones who keep falling over each other to keep them funded.
They’re all in it together. The blood is on everyone’s hands.
Brilliant video - It would be great to get that one up at the TOP of a post so more could see it.
Looks like the Dems are going to fold for Bush’s spy bill again: Link
I hope Dodd fillibusters the possible temporary extensions as well. I guess Democratic Congressional leaders do not realize that having the TSP law expire gives them the upper hand in negotiating a good bill. Why are our Democratic members in congress such wimps?
It is so easy for me to criticize candidates who don’t agree with my antiwar stance. Realistically, none of them are the enemy. I’m shaking my fist at the mirror. As I look at it, a president either supports the deeds of the CIA, NSA and War College Board (Mc Cain, Bushco) or they quietly object or make a weak statement to the press about opposing the escalation of war. Can they DO anything? None have been able to do anything so far.
What can Kucinich or Dodd do when they sit in the Oval Office? Just what when it comes to secret operations and war? Someone needs to enlighten me on what they can actually do to stop it.
I figure when I face the reality of what the person can actually do and who is really in charge, I’ll be able to come up with a different strategy to tackle the problem.
Camille Paglia pokes coals at the bottom of a fire.
OT–
People often say we recognize recession only when we’re no longer in it. Is this true? And if so, why? Thanks.
If one wants a candidate who is outraged by this war, one who has consistently followed their conscience; look no further than Dennis Kucinich. Truthdig.com has tried to be egalitarian in reviewing all of the candidates and has some excellent commentary. I think it’s beyond time that we really started voting for who is the best candidate versus ‘the lesser of evils’. This strategy has been clearly shown to be detrimental!
I’m not trying to deflect from FDL, but what I would like to see is more exposure here. He’s got great ideas and legislation that answers so many of what has been thoroughly discussed here.
One True Voice on the Trail. Please read the interview associated wit the article. I think some of you would enjoy his perspective.
Congress is expected to stop wars by refusing to further fund them.

Yes. True. But when push comes to shove, we have to be practical about those who are electible. Plus, didn’t his wife say he would happily sign up with Ron Paul to make a run. Outside of the war, there is NOTHING about Ron Paul that would lead me to vote for him. If true, the statement, also was DUMB.
1. Three civilians wounded by an explosion near Kirkuk.

3. Eye-witnesses report the killing of two American soldiers and the wounding of a third.

5. Americans bomb more than forty targets in an air raid southern Baghdad - that’s a heavily populated area too so there’ll be “collateral damage” or to put it in plain English the American airforce and army joined forces and killed civilians.
