On the heels of Hillary's gutty victory last night, I read this in my morning paper:
Even before the results from New Hampshire came in Tuesday, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton was already retooling her campaign, looking ahead to later contests in the primary process. Several new faces are expected to come aboard, including Maggie Williams, a longtime confidante to the former first lady, and Doug Sosnik, who served as White House political director under former President Clinton, according to officials. Roy Spence, CEO and chairman of Austin advertising agency GSD&M's Idea City, could be taking on a bigger role in Clinton's campaign, several media outlets reported.
Roy Spence was one of the founders of GSD&M, the powerful Austin-based agency which was built largely on the Wal-Mart account, a GSD&M client for nearly 20 years.
Now let me make something clear right off the bat: I don't have a problem with the fact that Spence helped build the Wal-Mart brand. If you work in advertising on the level Spence does, you're going to service brands that don't necessarily mesh with every aspect of your politics. I'm a grown up and I get that.
But what I find odd about this is Hillary already has a world-class ad man on her team, Jimmy Siegel, who produced some of the best political advertising I've ever seen for Elliot Spitzer.
Spence is a legend in the ad business and an unusually talented man, but he's lost his edge. There's a late 80s/early 90s feel to him. GSD&M has been struggling of late, recently losing a trio of big accounts including Wal-Mart, AT&T and Chili's. And he's recently taken to idiosyncratic flights of fancy, like his Forrest Gump-esque walk around the country:
Spence was criticized for stepping away from some of his day-to-day duties at the agency, turning attention toward things such as his "Walk Across America," in which he plans to traverse portions of the United States for several years, meeting with ordinary folks.
Okie-doke.
After Mark Penn's sleazy performance on "Hardball" and watching Terry McAullife last night with Andrea Mitchell, I really do wonder sometimes about the people the Clintons surround themselves with.

Carmen made some good points in the previous post, about the possibilities of voting machine tampering yesterday in NH. I’ll have more below.
oy
Blue Texan:
Typo on 1st line of 3rd para: …the
the…I dare say, connecting Hillary with Wal-Mart more will NOT serve her well. Her presence on the board when so much was happening to workers there is oneof the reasons I am so opposed to her!
Also on Walmart, this link will not help her so well with the unions.
These folks are used to big numbers.
We little folks have some work to do as they are overlooking the little numbers…
from Juan Cole, refugees need a few dollars
forgive me this ot…gotta go
jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez!

I suppose Hillary’s campaign ads might be about to take flight–from reality…
I don’t associate Spence with having built WalMart’s brand. It was there before GSD&M got the account. It was and is Southwest Airlines that he helped build and vice versa. I think you may be looking for something that is not there. WalMart did not build GSD&M. Southwest Airlines did.
Full Disclosure: My daughter worked there until she got fed up with the advertising industry and quit one day before GSD&M lost the AT&T account.
HillaryThe Walmart Approved Candidate
Oh yippee.
EPU’ed, but still media/hillary.
http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/1/9/10389/11020
Big tent, who is not a hillary supporter, by far, asks us to unite against the media and cease calling her divisive. He questions Kos (there’s a link)
This is a quote but I don’t have the source. so with apologies, it has been said, and it is worth remembering IMHO,
gone for the day. me, not hillary or the media.
Although the overwhelming evidence of tampering with voting machines in past elections in many states, and other hijinks - almost entirely by GOP-linked operatives - is well known here at fdl, Carmen was jumped for bringing up the possibility that HRC’s victory in NH yesterday wasn’t just the “Tweety Effect.” I think the premise merits more discussion.
It is increasingly obvious from the new Sibel Edmonds materials
coming outbeing buried this week, that the undermining of this Republic’s democracy knows no political boundaries in terms of poliitical affiliation. Many of the people all but named (they’re pictured) in Sibel Edwards’ outpouring are Democrats, some closely linked to the Clintons.Go look at Brad Friedman’s take on the disparities between polls and results yesterday in NH. Then come back and continue to diss Carmen. I dare you.
Every friggin’ candidate out there from both party is now claiming to be the agent of “CHANGE.” HRC is an incredibly corporate-friendly candidate. Her husband was responsible, according to the UN, for the deaths of about 500,000 Iraqis during his phase of our 18-year long war against the Iraqis. They were mostly kids.
More Bill Kristol greatest hits… missattributed quotations
Kristol on why Hillary won in NH: “She pretended to cry; the women liked it.”
I am trying to understand this, but I don’t. Are we going to start bashing candidates because of who they hire? What if her hairdresser is a Republican? What if she rode in a Japanese car? Can you become infected with it? Sounds like this guy did a job for Wal-Mart and now he’s going to work for her. I don’t shop at Wal-Mart and I support Edwards but I truly don’t get this.
In short yes - who you hire IS important.
OT - chimpy live on msnbc
I don’t get it either. (Obviously, see my post @10) What is it about the Clintons that cause even Democrats to attack? We (being the blogosphere) are doing what we accuse the candidates of doing - the Republicans dirty work.
Perfect fit, HRC and the mega-corp personified.
Thanks Edward Teller. Also if Looseheadprop is here I left a question for her at the end of the thread.
First I looked at your link - and it is not all that Dem. Or, framed another way it is very Neo-Con (of course), 2 of whom are Dems (one from NY and one from Ca).
On vote rigging in NH. If the companies are owned by Rethugs, so presumably they have the codes, why would they shift votes to Hillary. And, unlike in Fla or Ohio, have we seen any evidence by poll watchers that things were being screwed with? Or demographically have we (like Fla recently) seen a clear mess up in terms of votes and likelies.
But their loyalty is to you when they are hired.
morning ET,
is there someplace where the pics sibel edwards released are together with their names? i didn’t recognize most of the faces when i looked at the pics.
It is important to me in the sense that I am pro-union, but I don’t imagine that advertising people are union at all. That’s my point.
http://www.pollster.com/blogs/.....thread.php
Link to a pretty good prelimary analysis on why the preliminary polling didn’t match the results in NH.
Even with loyalty, they shape the tenor of things significantly (think about the Carvelle vitriol of the group who peopled the “war room” for Bill. In the end it was that in part which made the Rethugs so furious with him, and probably led to the whole vitriolic push against him.
W has that “Pet Goat” look on his face…cheek biting and shifty eyes…somethin’s up.
Advertising is one of the “glamour” businesses - ones where people kill and walk all over each other to get it and then get paid a pittance. I will stick up for GSD&M and tell you that they treated their people VERY fairly and had wonderful benefits and up until this year had NEVER laid anyone off. It is the dog eat dog industry that makes it suck.
I don’t know why, other than that the people behind the machine or data collection manipulation view her as their best choice amongst a bleak field compared to what they now enjoy for a bright, profitable political future, here and overseas.
You’re welcome, Carmen.
After seeing the Obama wave after Iowa, it’s
I guess I was responding more generally to Hillary’s long standing ties with walmart which is notoriously anti-union and anti-worker - regardless of this particular individual.
The article on BradBlog discusses the polling disparities in detail. I think that corporate america feels that they have more of a known quantity in Hillary than in Obama. Afterall Obama spent 2 years as a community organizer, and even though he’s politically playing the “don’t antagonize any Republicans who might vote for me” game, I still think he’s more likely to be less beholden to corporate world.
And isn’t it great to blunt the “Obama movement” before the race widens even further?
OK, you got me with Carville. I hate the man.
That you would believe Iranian gunmen instead of patriotic US servicemen is beyond belief…
Maybe because McCain beats her in the General Elections according to RCP. Interesting that both McCain and HRC win in NH.
Corporate boards - How many board members are there on Wal-Mart’s board? If board members start cashing in stock while on a corporate board, it is because they have a lot of insider information. When it come to influencing going the other way (a single board member to corporate governance) I don’t think any one member has that much influence.
It’s nice work if you can get it. Good pay, do little, show up occasionally, get some stock options.
I’ve seen several head-to-head polls of the top Ds vs. the top Rs and although all of the Ds beat all of the Rs, Hillary wins by a smaller amount.
I am not swayed by arguments that vote rigging played a part yesterday, but this may be a reason the Rs want to run against Hillary.
Bottom line of the election last night- damned near everyone’s still alive. That includes Hillary and Edwards, but also Rudi-toot-toot and Romney and a host of goopers. If one candidate for either party had swept the first two—it could be all over for their competitors.
We Edwards supporters should be pleased. It ain’t lookin good but there’s still life.
At her site she has posted the pictures in higher definition. I guess her attorneys have decided that she can print pictures, but can’t name names.
Again, I am not a Hillary supporter, but nationally her polls are right up there in terms of beating the Rethugs so it is not clear to me that there was enough of a motive here to warrant it, especially if there is a chance of their getting caught. Far better to wait until the election itself, or a state with a big pool of candidates -super Tues for ex.
One thought I had this morning is that the media is harping on the notion that “voters crave change.” I think they are misconstruing the change that’s being demanded. It’s not a craving for change from partisan gridlock and sniping, blah blah blah–truly the most intellectually empty notion out there right now—it’s a craving for a change from Bush/Cheney.
If you frame change in those terms, Hillary promises to deliver that change–just as Obama and Edwards do too. But no Democrat has cornered the market on change, at all.
Gnome,
Agreed. I worked at GSD&M too, on the Wal-Mart, ATT and Chili’s and others.
Wal-Mart didn’t make GSD&M, Southwest did. There’s a backstory to the GSD&M / Wal-Mart “whambamthankyouman” relationship but I don’t have time to go into it now.
Blue Tex: Roy Spence, whatever you may think of his business management style or politics, is personally responsible for this, which he funded out of his own pocket (and keep in mind, this IS Texas):
http://www.amazingfaithoftexas.com/
Gnome: we really do need to get together! I didn’t know your daughter worked at GSD&M too. Probably was there when I was. Alas, I need to return to galley slaving at the work factory now. Will send you email later…
Ah, perhaps the vote rigging was on the R side, to give McCain the victory. Although in NH I don’t think he needed the help.
As I recall he also beats Obama. So no gain there.
They aren’t worried about her beating Republicans - my dog would this coming November. They’re worried about her beating Obama, who - apparently - isn’t yet in their pocket.
Uhh…not sure what happened there…
Anyway, Did you see what happened after Obama’s Iowa win? There is such excitement for his campaign that I think the Establishment knows they won’t be able to keep a lid on it. They desparately want Hillary to get the nod. She is not and will not create a societal shift. She represents the same everything. Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton…if she gets elected, we’re talking 25-30 years of this shit. In in this time, do you think things have been improving, or getting worse? If the latter, why would anyone want the same sort of “experience?”
So, I think there’s incentive to fix votes for Hillary. Not saying that happened here, but I do feel there’s motive.
Left side of Bush’s face is droopy - Bell’s Palsy?????
It certainly is. The person you hire has been vetted inside out, upside down and backwards. No stone is unturned. Show me the people in a company and I’ll tell you a lot about the CEO. As above, so below.
Don’t confuse job applicants with being a candidate for a position. They are totally different.
A feminist journalist’s take on Hillary, and Hillary-bashing by the media:
Ties Obama.
If Carmen s around, I answered your question at the bottom of the last thread. it took forever to type, the site keeps freezing on me today.
MSM (the right corporatists) was giddy about Obama. I think many of them would vote for him over say Huckabee. I still say it was not worth the risk for them, and we have no evidence on the ground that anything happened. And, it can be explained better in so many other ways (”indep” NHers, sympathy vote for Hillary, independents who wanted Obama figured he was safe so they went with the Repub side of the ticket for a moderate, McCain.
So? These are VERY fluid numbers and will remain so for a while.
Wal-Mart was one of the cornerstone accounts for Spence’s agency for 20 years.
And my point is still — why Spence when you have Siegel?
Doesn’t make any sense at all to me.
It appears that there were several factors present that may have caused the preliminary polling to be wrong:
1) Much of the polling took place on a weekend- notoriously unreliable time.
2) Even 24 hours before the election- a significant number of voters were still undecided- that fact got ignored by the media.
3) Many college educated women said that they were leaning Obama- but when it came time to pull the lever- pulled it for Hillary.
The first place to look for an actual vote heist is the exit polling- if it was heavy Obama- then that would provide a justification for looking some suspicion- but I have not seen any evidence that such was the case.
GSD&M also did the “Don’t mess with Texas” anti-litter campaign iirc.
I’m pretty sure they are gonna hit Iran.
So true, and if you add, with the Right wing Zogby poll coming out SO high for Obama, lots of people probably said, he will win, he doesn’t need my vote, let me give it to hillary.
yes i realize she can’t name names. my question is if you know/could create a place where i could see the names and pics together. it’s not that the pics weren’t clear enough, it’s that i’m not familiar with what most of the people i read about look like. not watching tv at all.
I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, and that was close to my first take on this. As I said at comment #2 or so, this warrants further investigation, and Carmen was dissed a bit unfairly in the preceding thread. Not yet time to do any Occam’s Razor stuff, though…
BT
Is the Clinton campaign effectively using Siegel? Those ads for Spitzer were the best political ads I have ever seen.
There’s been nothing of that quality among the current candidates’efforts.
Yes they did.
Reconfirms my 58 - women who were Obama supporters, basically got fed up with the MSM bullying, figured he was safe, and voted for Hillary.
Don’t know. Good question.
And again, if you’ve got him, why do you elevate Spence, and make noise about that?
Baffling.
No doubt whatsoever at this point. We will, of course, have to put off the elections while the chimpenator in chief struts his stuff as a “war time” presdident.
Your argument is that the GOP would have nothing to gain with an HRC victory. They clearly do gain if HRC is the Dem nominee and McCain is the GOP nominee. Which was exactly the outcome contrary to the polling data. But to dismiss the plausability of vote manipulation because the GOP would not gain by an HRC victory is a little short-sighted. Granted the head to head polling is dated. I would like to see recent head to heads from the past week or so.
Blue Texan - Do you know the saying in the retail/wholesale industry?
Q. What is worse than not getting the WalMart account?
A. Gettin the WalMart account
Ever the great Dem unifier!
One more before I really really really go back to work…
Agreed that Siegel is a gifted political advertiser. That doesn’t mean that Roy can’t bring something to the table, some things beyond pure advertising.
Rumors were rampant a couple of years ago that Roy was priming up a run at the guvnership so his offerings may well be more of “political consulting and advertising and targeting and media buys and etc.” than creative direction/production on TV commercials. He’s got lots of scar tissue in the advertising/marketing bidness that could be perceived as very valuable to a previously stumbling :-) political campaign.
I have to wonder –when Clinton lost Iowa
she did not blame anybody but her own campaign
Obama loses and it is everyone elses fault and everyone is conspiring
the racists and the voting machine fraud people all got together and aaid we want this race to go on so let’s fix it for Clinton
Olmert just said that he is highly encouraged after meeting with Bush that Bush will take “exceptional” actions or something to that effect regarding Iran to stop them from whatever it is they are trying to stop them from attaining which they don’t already have but might at some point attain the knowledge of obtaining in the future but that Bush has forbidden that so he will take care of it. Get that.
A girl can dream. Can you imagine what Siegel could do for say, a John Edwards? *g*
Hilde, you can find me through facebook. My daughter is there, too, if you do some sleuthing. That’s how some of my non-fdl friends found me, by doing the reverse.
It’s just all so obvious and blatant to me. I don’t understand why others don’t see it.
The Clintons stand for nothing other than political gain.
Do Clinton supporters find it odd how often and rapidly her message changes?!? After Iowa, she’s now the Change candidate (did you see the NH debate?). Now, she’s the Underdog after nearly 10 years of Conglomerate Media telling us she’s “unbeatable” and “inevitable.” This Underdog theme has been particularly odd the last 24 hours in how coordinated it seems with Conglomerate Press. How in the world can someone say that she’s an Underdog compared to Obama. What an insult to Obama’s life struggle. The Clintons know people like Underdog stories. Cue the “Rocky” theme song.
Won’t even get into how negative and angry she and Bill have gotten toward Obama in the last week. Scary really. These are not good people.
Well done - that is as clear as Shrub’s policies. LOL
FWIW Drudge has up that Obama got 8 mill in contrib over the week-end and 500K this morning on the web.
Clearly the Rethugs are worried about Obama (the Iowa victory must have really got them thinking - and what was happening in NH with mobs coming to hear him. That said, I think they also are worried about Hillary and Edwards.
The longer this campaign season extends, the better…agree strongly with your point that this wave is a rising up for change from BushCo…
citizenry is revolting against the status quo BushCo and MSM in the best way possible…at the ballot box. Democracy is the best revenge.
Prairie Sunshine says We Don’ Need No Steenkin’ Polls….
Gnome,
That is so fricken’ true. And not just for ad agencies. All WM vendors are raked over the coals as standard practice.
Must add that the WM folks I worked with were particularly bright, fair and hard-workin’ folks. I had to swallow hard the throw-up in my mouth every time I engaged on the account due to my extreme dislike of WM business practices but, in my particular experience, their employees were pretty great to work with.
OK. NOW I’m returning to the galley to slave away my day…
1,721 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Teller and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
I’m afraid you are exactly right on with the speculation about vote tamperin’…and I believe that it was orchestrated by corporate bagmen thru the White House. I will never cast a vote for a Clinton again, the only thing I hope for now is a war off attrition between O’Lieberman and Mrs. Clinton. In my opinion, if Mark Penn remains at the wheel of her campaign, Clinton will kiss her “progressive” women on the cheek for New Hampshire and go after O’Lieberman from the right…that will leave the entire base of the Democratic Party to John Edwards.
The only thing I know for sure is that this whole campaign is a long way from over as long as Edwards stays in and continues to message from where he is right now. The stealin’ of this primary may have positive consequences in that the corporate media are walkin’ their scrawny asses buck naked down the street and nobody can stand the sight.
KEEP THE FAITH AND WATCH ‘EM BEAT EACH OTHER UP!!
And this:
(Same link as my 49.)
Becoming the first female President or black President of the USA is HUGE political gain for all of us. That is enough to scare the you-know-what out of any knuckle dragger.
So…should we expect “The Hillary Collection” at Wal-Mart…???? Pant suits, jackets with Chinese collars, towels, sheets, bath mats, etc., ????? Or, is she gonna appear at the check-out counter or on milk cartons??? WTF?
Right on. So why would anyone argue that another Clinton is the cure? They are the status quo!
I hope everyone realizes we are on the brink of attacking a sovereign country again.
Can we please stop these people!!!!!!
This was great! It is up on youtube too I think at C & L.
Anyone watching Bush. I’m at work watching on ‘mute’. He looks bored.
Just another day on the job - attack another foreign country.
Thanks, Norske!
olmert just said: “thank god i can conduct political negotiations with george bush at my side”
I just don’t see that. What if someone like Kay Baily Hutchison was running. Would you say that then, and support her just because she’s female? Dangerous slope to that argument IMHO.
After Mark Penn’s sleazy performance on “Hardball” and watching Terry McAullife last night with Andrea Mitchell, I really do wonder sometimes about the people the Clintons surround themselves with.
Its not the people that “surround” the Clintons that worry me — one of the hallmarks of the Clinton campaign is that they wanted everyone on their bandwagon — so you’re gonna get some bad apples in that barrel.
What bothers me is the quality of the people who act on Clinton’s behalf, and get sent out to speak on behalf of the campaign.
But then again, would any self-respecting person go on Hardball, or appear with Andrea Mitchell? So I’m going to be charitable, and hope that the reason that Penn and McAullife and their ilk aren’t there because that’s Hillary’s first choice — its that none of the good people will lower themselves to the Matthews/Mitchell level, and she has to go for the people who are already that low.
My Dear Departed Communications Company has a wonderful PR guy. Her skills with both fresh and salt water projects are legend.
Recently, she filmed the capture of the American Fleet by an Iranian Boston Whaler.
We need our Senators to speak up and quickly. Biden has in the past. He needs some air time again.
Yeah. It is one of the scariest pressers I’ve ever heard. Bush is insane.
I’m beginning to wonder if the boat/Navy dustup was a false flag operation? I can see Cheney et al pulling that.
Shirley Chisholm was one of the first black women to run for congress and the first to seek presidential nomination. After she lost her bid she was asked if it was more difficult to be in congress as a black or as a woman. Without hesitation she responded it was far more difficult to be a woman in politics because even the black congressmen shut her out and didn’t take her seriously.
Sexism is alive and well. Critizing Hillary for her position on issues is valid. Demeaning her because she showed a little emotion is raw sexism. Even Bush says he wells up when he meets with the families of fallen soldiers. And those are people he sent off to be killed.
No matter what Hillary does she will be hated. Even headlines love to use the word “death” when describing Hillary’s candidacy. They don’t even do that to Fred Thompson.
Every sexist blow that hits Hillary is aimed at all women. That will teach us to ever run for a male dominated position. Two weeks ago my eldest daughter says to me that this country will not allow a woman to be president. It just won’t happen. She will be smeared and discredited cruelly and with pleasure. To hear my daughter say that after a lifetime of activism so she could inherit a better place for women than I did, I put my gloves back on and I’m fighting for my daughters and granddaughters.
With this brain damaged electorate?
Certainly not.
Nomination of Obama or Clinton is suicide.
Any of the GOP Basket Cases can beat them. Especially flaky McCain.
Got it. The boy went over to get the script for the October surprise,
if they can wait that long… might use it earlier to pick our nominee
for us. Neocons in the drivers seat since 1967.
I watched the video and listened to the “Iranian” threat…honestly, I’m not joking…I think it is Borat. We may see that footage in a movie down the road. If you haven’t seen it or listened…it is actually hilarious.
Problem is, we are dealing with a lunatic Prezdinent and Co-lunatic Prezdeinent.
Well-said. We uppity women just need to stay in our place.
Well, whoop-de-do! Corporate Amerika saddles up to rescue Hillary.
Why am I not surprised.
And why am I not surprised that her supporters are as happy as pigs in shit, to see it happening.
If anyone thinks Hillary Clinton is not the CEO’s handmaiden, right down to her support of their war, here’s one more little robin, chirping away aboutit.
Did you ever consider that Siegel might prefer working with the boys than the girls? No one will deny his talent but his subjects may be of a preference he feels a greater kinship. This was one of the most common things I experienced in corporations. Women could work with (often for) men but it just didn’t work well the other way round. Where it worked added up to tokenism.
Impeach cheney/bush/reid/pelosi.
Not disagreeing with bonkers at all…I’m tickled to see the old political campaign season model being totally turned on its head.
As for Bush’s ME trip, heard someone say while I was driving the other day, too little. Too late.
And, timing, timing, timing! Why now? Just in time to get the rethugs nationally to fall behind McCain or Guili, and the Dems to go for Hillary. This is all AIP*C’s doing I bet.
You go girl! In response to Bonkers - I have predicted that the first female president would have to be a Republican because of what QuakerGirl sez. I thought it might be Liddy Dole. What I love about this “fight” is that the guys who think they can control it, don’t know about us mama tigers who have been raising our sons and daughters for this day. There are going to be bigger and bigger surprises out there for the Chris Matthews of this world. Hee hee hee.
