While waiting for the New Hampshire results to start tumbling it, CNN showed live video of Air Force One ready to take off with George Bush aboard. Our Prez is leaving the country, en route to the Middle East. His escape seemed a perfect metaphor for what's happening in New Hampshire today, where voters are turning out in record numbers to express their disapproval of a failed Presidency.
CNN's early exit polls tell the story. When asked how they feel about the Bush Presidency, the results were stunning:
Those voting Republican:
Enthusiastic – 10 percent
Satisfied, but not enthusiastic – 40 percent
Dissatisfied, but not angry – 33 percent
Angry – 16 percent
Those voting Democratic:
Enthusiastic – 2 percent
Satisfied, but not enthusiastic – 4 percent
Dissatisfied, but not angry – 28 percent
Angry – 65 percent
The media are reporting huge turnout; a story earlier today said some local polling places were frantically calling the capital begging for more ballots -- Democratic ballots. Let it sink in.
We're seeing a tough battle between the candidates. But it's also clear these primaries are turning into a referendum on the Bush/Cheney regime, and the results are unmistakable.
The country is fed up with this regime and they're ready to come out in record numbers to register not only their hope for change but their disgust and rejection of an Administration that has embarrassed and shamed the country.
Before the results came in, Chris Matthews tried to spin this as a rejection of Hillary. Bill Clinton tried today to blame unfair media coverage for the Obama surge, but I think he could help Hillary more by explaining that many Americans are projecting their hopes that a Democratic Administration will be the opposite of the lawless regime we've seen for the last seven years; then he should get out the way and let Hillary tap into that hope if she can. It's a powerful force and it's sweeping the country. And it's about time.
UPDATE: Results with 46 percent of precincts reporting:
Clinton , Hillary Dem 46,206 39%
Obama , Barack Dem 43,118 36%
Edwards , John Dem 19,856 17%
Richardson , Bill Dem 5,420 5%
Kucinich , Dennis Dem 1,717 1%

caw caw! Time for all of that Bush love to come back and haunt the Retreads.
Where did they get that 6% of dems that are liking this crap? Lieberman folks huh?
It is highly likely that by the time there is a race between a Dem and a Repuke, there will also be a conflict with Iran. Bush is beating the drums, and he is on his way to meet with Israel to discuss strikes on Iran. Infuriating.
If Bushco bombs Iran, there is not a chance in hell that another Republican will ever, ever, ever be elected to any office in this country. I think the country will go ballistic and impeach all of them. I mean it.
caw caw!
Scott Spradling, who asked some really good questions in the dual debates, is on C-Span, at Clinton campaign headquarters. Well, not this instant, but C-Span seems to have NH primary coverage this evening.
It’s a little late for Senator Clinton who has refused to take questions from the press or the public throughout her campaign to start now.
She’s down and she can’t get up. She always thought of herself as the rock star, but now has realized that Obama is.
As a Senator, it’s her duty to take questions from the press and the public, and hopefully she’ll learn to do that as she serves out her term in the Senate.
If she were smart, she’d help Chris Dodd in his fight for privacy in the Senate, but I doubt she will.
I like those numbers. But they raise a few questions . . .
(1) How long is it going to take before the (remaining) GOP candidates start to distance themselves from Bush?
(2) How long is it going to take before the GOP members of Congress — especially those up for reelection in Nov — start to distance themselves from Bush?
(3) How long is it going to take Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to figure out that standing up to Bush is a good idea politically?
I’m guessing the first group will take days, the second group weeks, and the third group months.
I think Tucker’s death analogies are particularly un-apt when reporting on the McCain campaign.
Sorry for the double posts, not sure what’s making that happen….
(3) How long is it going to take Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to figure out that standing up to Bush is a good idea politically?
I’m guessing the first group will take days, the second group weeks, and the third group months.
(1) and (2)The beauty of your question as to when they’ll distance themselves from Bush, and it’s a good one, is that I don’t see anyway for them to do that now given the positions they’ve taken.
The only distance from Bush is the one that’s going to win. A rejection of him that is fierce.
(3) That’s never going to happen IMHO. They have been a colossal disappointment, and essentially they’ve been the wind behind Bush on every critical vote.
Just watch S. 2248 unfold shortly. Reid is doing everything he can to slam dunk immunity and the rest of that bill leaves what’s illegal up to DOJ and DNI.
They’ve extended the polling hours in Hillsboro due to lines. (From C-Span, WMUR, the local station in NH)
Heh. The reporter at Ghouliani headquarters just referred to him as “The 9/11 mayor.” [snort]
I think Bill Clinton has taken hands on control of Hillary’s campaign now, and probably is beginning to wrest control from Mark Penn, Howard Wolfson, and Patti Solis Doyle some of whom may be gone soon.
I don’t think he’s being that effective on the stump for her. Clinton is poetry and magic as a politician. Of course he can work a room from the podium or anywhere else in it. In trying to attack Obama and defend his wife, though, he seems hollow and perfunctory and I don’t think he believes the words he’s saying.
Perhaps it was his pitch for a staring role in Poppy and His Big Dog Go Around the World in 80 Days that contributed to Obama’s rise.
Whatever an Obama administration may bring forward, I hope it’s not a regurgitation of the last 20 years.
Folks, this got posted early and then yanked back. Everyone else is still chatting on Jane’s exit poll thread. (You can keep chatting here, but no one will join you until the post goes back up later — whenever that will be.)
is this up?
i got zed#2!
It is back!
Hiya, SK!
Congrats!
I just love the smell of Dems out polling Rethugs Big Time!
Any of the New Hampshirites here: What kind of voting system did you vote on? Electronic touch screen? Optical scan? Other?
If they haven’t figured it out by now, I don’t think they ever will.
You got zip.
2% margin

Honey, we on this site have been saying this for how long? WE real members of the rank and file actually know how regular voters feel.
Do you THINK anybody on Capital Hill will take us seriously now?
Nah, me neither

Pete - I watched her in NH on cspan this weekend take questions for 2 hours… I don’t know what you are talking about…
Teddy!
How Life in Bagdad-on-the-Bay?
What’s with all the time-traveling posters? SK, have you discovered the secret of time travel?
Spill it! Puleeeeeeeze!
The worst part of all this is that Mark “Where’s the Bounce?” Penn will end up looking like a genius.
Neither does he.
Ron Paul is letting ALL the crazy hang out…
65% of Dems are angry?
Kinda low,Of course completely pissed off wasn’t a choice.
What’s especially frustrating is that they’re actually *hurting* themselves by not standing up to Bush. Opposing him is a win-win, and they’ve chosen lose-lose instead.
This election is a ton of fun so far. The implosion of the right has been awesome. I hope that the Democratic horserace runs all the way until the convention. I know that it’s too much to hope for but I’ve got my fingers crossed anyway. Everytime I turn on the TV I want to see them talking about the Dems and talking about our issues. During the last Presidential election, as soon has Kerry had wrapped it up, the Media dropped coverage of the Dem field and we went back to pretty dead girls 24/7. Here’s to a long and hard fought primary.
IMO, what we’re seeing with the record numbers of voters is an insurgency. This November’s election may be the closest thing we’ll ever see to a bloodless Revolution! Baton down the hatches, boys, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!
In terms of number of voters, like in Iowa, the Democrats in New Hampshire are trouncing the Republicans. It is our party that has BIG MO!
Busted - you always make me laugh!

Procuratio Frutex delenda est.
Rut Roh!!!! And away we go!!
Those who supported the war should pay for it oil companies, the Main Stream Media, Haliburtron the defense companies that kept our solders waiting for bullet proof vests and armored Humvees.
Bush’s base the economic elites.
Bush may have destroyed the GOP brand for a generation.
Barring another terror attack on his watch, of course. These, inexplicably, accrue to his benefit.
Nooooo!
MSNBC with 53% reporting:
Hillary Clinton 53,878 39%
Barack Obama 50,413 37%
John Edwards 23,048 17%
Actually, I think the rookies and mid-level folks will take us even more seriously, and perhaps question the leadership a bit more vigorously. Some of the BA folks have noted how much pressure there is to not buck the leadership, and this might encourage them to ask the leaders not to buck the voters.
Not that I particularly expect RahmCo to roll over, mind you — but I’d love to see him have to work a helluva lot harder to peddle his snakeoil.
Wes: “She’s got game.”
Jeez, Wes, that makes you seem old.
C’mon now, play nice.
Atrios said it best:
…Chris Matthews: LEAVE JOHN MCCAIN ALOOOOOONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m with you, Lisa. I think the longer we can keep 3-4 people in the battle, the better it could be for the Dems — if they focus on the Bush/Repubs — and not try to destroy each other.
“Our Prez is leaving the country, en route to the Middle East.”
________
If they get Bu’ush (as they’ve asserted they will do), Darth Cheney will order the attack on Iran he so desperately wants.
More plausible, if they visibly try yet fail, it’ll pump new blood into the 911 Ghouliani Bootie Bandit’s campaign.
“embarassed and shamed this country”
I propose to add the word betrayed in there somewhere. Betrayed, embarassed and shamed.
I’m worried that ‘Waterboarding George’ is off to the middle east to coordinate the start of World War Three
I’ve lived in two towns here in NH, both of them used optical scan machines with paper ballots. So it’s partly electronic but at least there’s a paper trail… if anyone ever chooses to verify the paperwork I wouldn’t know. (not exactly trusting our election system after 2000, 2004 myself either but touch-screen voting machines might cause me to make a scene, lol)
It worries me to think about what Bush/Cheney are doing while our attention is elsewhere. I don’t think lame duck when I think of them, I think of walking disasters.
New Hampshire vs. Iowa: Hillary got the women back.
Huge gender gap, per Chuck Todd, which he attributes to, um, The Moment.
We’re not allowed to say betray. Move on.
Ron Paul on C-SPAN now.
Pretty much.
OH give me a mother frikkin break!
“Now there is a gender war inside the Democratic party”
Who was that A-hole?
I just caught it coming back in.
Maybe John Edwards doesn’t look so stupid after all, huh?
Heaven help us, Ron Paul is STILL talking…
Also, the word in Iowa was that Obama campaign was worried that McCain was pulling from their independents, and was considering going negative on McCain. Also, he didn’t benefit from Richardson voters switching to him this time.
Won’t know until later, but he could have had his constituency in Iowa was being pulled from 3 different sides.
At my caucus in rural iowa Clinton had all the older women
I find this highly amusing…
Ain’t it cool… ;-)
good one :)
I could not agree more. They seem to be so completley out of touch with reality
It worries me to think about what Bush/Cheney are doing while our attention is elsewhere. I don’t think lame duck when I think of them, I think of walking disasters.
Freedom’s just another word - for nothin’ left to lose…
As a result of the gender bashing that went on do you think? Smells like some backlash to the MSM.
Yeah New Hampshire has 80% acu-vote optical scanners, but the problem is with who counts them, who ends up with them. VerifyVoting has some great info along with Blackboxvoting about the computer voting machine problems. We need to be alert about this. California Secretary of State has said that when elections are within either l/2 or l% between candidates that 10% of the paper ballots must be manually recounted. She is being sued by County Clerks not to have to do that.
You’re right…counting the ballots is a big issue and we should not be comfortable with the given results.
I think it’s pretty insulting for anyone to imply that women decided to vote for Hillary because she cried, a little, sort of, in public. I highly doubt that minds were changed due to a few tears. Seems like she did a great job in NH and resonates with voters there… period.
The new voters who are rejecting this status quo were all 7-9th graders when Bush took us to war.
Apparently they WERE PAYING ATTENTION.
Which is more than we can say for some of their parents and grandparents.
The fruits of Bush’s misdeeds have poisoned the future for the party he rode into office on. The Republicans will play hell losing their neocon label.
Just who in the hell are these dem voters who classify themselves as “enthusiastic” about the Bush presidency (2%), or “satisfied” (4%)?
WTF? If they are so enthusiastic and satisfied why are they dem voters? This makes no sense at all.
Re:
Hmm, I just listened to Ron Paul say that America’s foreign policy needs to be completely reworked. I agree. He says we’ve been entirely too meddlesome since we overthrew the Iranian gov’t. in 1953. I agree.
While his domestic policy ideas aren’t my idea of good sense, at least he’s articulate about taming the military-industrial complex and alerting the public to the threat to our wealth and welfare being posed by the Fed printing too much money to pay for foreign adventures. I agree.
Those were bluedog congresspeople…
I think the response to her crying reminded people of what she’s up against as a woman running for President.
Hmmm…Black Box Voting has shown that the optical scans are as easy to change as any of the others. The paper gives a false sense of a paper trail since the manipulation can occur after the memory card is removed.
I suppose we should be grateful he didn’t say it was a race war…
Tweety namechecks Edwards!
…to say that he should drop out, why is he even still running.
While its great news that the Democratic party is enjoying record voter turnout, I’m a bit disenchanted that voters are buying what the corporatist candidates are selling. There is no single-payer health care, there is a bunch of reconciliatory reach across the aisle to rethugs koolaid, rethug cabinet positions available, the continuation of the occupation of Iraq, and fixing social security that doesn’t need the kind of fix they’re fixing to do to us. This is not a progressive agenda. Its better than what we’ve had for sure, but its not progressive.
No surprise with Tweety bashing Edwards. Why keep running? We don’t like you.
whoever they are there, their pants are on fire.
Funny. Those numbers just make no sense to me at all. Is it some sort of statistical abberation?
There was also a poll about what concerns they had. Iraq, economy, healthcare. No mention of the constitution or corruption. I wonder if it was ‘pick one of these’ or ‘fill in the blank’.
I’m looking at Ralph Reid on CNN, WTF and he is sitting next to Bill Bennet! I actually cannot believe that I am seein this on CNN. Is Ted Turner ashamed of himself yet?
Tweety just tried to put flowers on Edwards’ grave….saying he can’t go on…excuse me *sshole, but he was 2nd in Iowa….
This is just insanity.
Well, unless they were just funnin’ with the pollster. [hangs head, shuffles feet] I’ve been known to do that… [slinks off in shame]
I am confused. NH has 30 delegates. 22 are “pledged” and 8 are free to vote for any dem. So …. if it is 45% 35% 20% then does one person get 45% of the 30? and the next person 35%? How do they know which one gets the pledged delegates.
Yes, Teddy, I looked in my textbook and the NY Times and wikipedia before I asked.
I’m not good at math, but if these numbers hold for the rest of the precincts, are we looking at NH voters breaking 55% for Democrats? Woo hoo for the general election!
Re:
How can they be so fickle?
My own analysis is a bit different. When I looked at the map of the Iowa counties I was struck by the split between counties that bordered Illinois and those further west. Obama won every single river county. He was the surrogate “favorite son”. With New Hampshire being not too far from New York, I’m wondering of regionalist biases amounting to a vote for a “favorite daughter” might explain a bit of Hillary’s surprising strength? Just a thought, and not a very serious one at that… :)
Tweety… Edwards is finished, but leave McCain alone?! still off his meds.
ITA. If most of the country is completely disenchanted with the status quo, Why are the main Dem candidates so willing to cede the momentum?? How is this “change” in anything other than rhetoric?
My take…for whatever it’s worth…is that it’s good to keep Edwards, Obama, and Clinton all in the race at least through February. We didn’t need a situation where one candidate was coronated based on Iowa and New Hampshire wins. For one thing not having a choice would alienate later Democratic voters who would feel left out of the determining the outcome.
But I’m really worried about Edwards. The surveys I’ve seen haven’t indicated that he will be competitive in South Carolina, and may not even come in second. That would seem to be an essential spot for him to do well.
I saw that fuck head Bennett on msnbc (i think) and he said that people are going to back track on Obama when they find out he is left of Hill. What a dodofus.
Astounding. I think shes winning on the sympathy thing. I think this may be a wild campaign season.
Are those 8 delegates NH’s “super delegates?” (I’m as confused as you are about some of this primary stuff!)
No? He really said that? He wants our candidate chosen by 2 states?
We better all move to Iowa.
And Which Party had the White house…
Interesting. I’d like to know how many people this survey involved, if only to see what the actual number of persons is represented by the 2 & 4%.
Mrs. Greenspan is ’splaining how Hillary has done well - using precisely the same terms she used earlier tonight when she described how a presidential candidate *should* campaign.
She’s a self-proclaimed genius, she is.
And here I was hoping that her head would explode on live national teevee - grumble, grumble…
Hi Jane, I also think Edwards & Obama are a tough choice - both have a strong message of change vs. Hillary’s (up till last week) experience message. I personally like both Edwards & Obama but leaned towards the latter because his message seems clearer… but if Obama weren’t in this primary both I and my sweetie would have voted for Edwards. As things stand today we’d like to see an Obama/Edwards ticket.
I agree. If Bush does any more warmongering, the repubican party can kiss it off for a long old time.
Chris Matthews says he will know what will happen. He’s watching this. The headlines will say that Obama has won.
I would rather live in New Hampshire.
Do you think they tampered with the voting machines?
The night is still young.
Did you hear Tweety say that Edwards is finished?
I almost smashed the TeeVee in. What a freakin idiot!!
Tweety’s animostity for all things Clinton is only surpassed by his completely inauthenitc refusal to acknowledge Edward’s existance. Why does this nimrod still have a job? he is NEVER right–about anything
At 59% C/O has tightened to 2.2% difference.
Having lived in Maine for a number of years, I would make a guess that the “experience” message was probably quite effective over the “change” message… but NH pretty different now since I lived in that area of the country.
I saw my accountant today. He’s very rightwing — still thinks Bush is doing a good job — and he told me he watched the debate the other night and thought Edwards made a lot of sense and could even see himself voting for him.
Then he used it as proof that Democrats are crazy that Edwards isn’t running away with the nomination.
How would we know whether they tampered with the voting machines without an audit?
MSNBC saying that the reason Hillary is ahead is because the weather is good, so the old folks came out.
This is a pisser offer to the max. MSNBC is totally pissing me off. Keith included.
When I was your age, that question would not have been asked. But, now….who knows.
