First off, let me say that I have total YouTube clip envy of Christy's Chet Atkins video in the last post. So to curb my jealousy I'm going to lay down a little Oscar Peterson, who passed away last week at his home in Mississauga, Ontario.
It’s a rainy day in LA, with buckets on the way. What’s The Spin You’re in today???

Zed? my first of the new year, if so. and only my 3rd.
We have been remembering Oscar Peterson all week in the BlueBayState, on WGBH’s various evening jazz shows.
Hey Donita! Happy new year!
Donita and Fini! Fini did ya spend New Years at home?
Hi Donita, Hi fini
Thanks this is a treat!
Hope you feeling better this week, fini!
*waving to Young Jess, CTuttle and BSRH
*waves back*
Wow, that’s quite a play list this week.
Thanks Donita…and welcome back Fini.
Oscar Peterson? Oh yes!

Hope folks don’t mind the OT, but I just found the comment on this CQ article highly amusing. Did you know that the reason Biden didn’t win Iowa last night is because the media picked the candidates and participants voted sheeplike for who they were told to?
Apparently it’s a pretty fine line between enthusiastic and delusional…

The Spin I’m in? You mean what’s currently going on in our lives?
I was celebrating my mother’s birthday today.
Other than that the new year started with a job interview for me that went suboptimal. Basically I’m not the perfect guy for the job and vice versa. I have another job interview next week. Wish me luck.
Hello, Donita! Happy New Year!!!
Here also it’s raining. I was far away from FDL because of several problems, but now I’m back!
My band rehearsed again and our cover of L7 is getting better, we’ll record songs soon! I’m sad because I don’t still have enough money to watch your shows here in Brazil… I need to buy the tickets to travel for Sao Paulo, but I’m without work and I don’t have enough money, because the trips here cost very expensive. I live in the Northeast and the shows will be in the Southeast of the country. To watch your shows would be my birthday present, because I’ll be 17 years old on January 24! You will make a new tour after the release of this new album?

I’m worried about the huge swarms of stinging jellyfish now off the coast of Ireland.
I hope Van Morrison doesn’t stumble into the waters.
Shouldn’t at least a few of those read
WIND!!!
?
(We’ve been warned to expect something-or-other, but what we’ll actually get is still unclear. The hard rain is still north of here a long way: SLO and north of Fresno, last I checked.)
Stay dry in CA, it’s really a mess from what I hear.
The spin I’m in?
eating that long anticipated croissant with chipped ham and melty cooper’s sharp on top. *s*
all week I’ve been craving this. I can now pass on to the great beyond happy. Oh yeah, and that Iowa Caucus turnout, that’s spinnin’ more smiles here too
Oops. I’m thinkin’ there may have been a small technical problem. I just refreshed my screen (after having been to the front page) and there are more songs in the playlist than when I first arrived here.
Just in case other early birds might have missed it
Samson the Cat - tons of luck to you - i’m familiar with that scenario. Sucks. But i got a job - sorta temp to perm (with “unexpected corporate buyout, let go, brought back” in the midst of that).
Jeebus
I just got my first reverse 9-1-1 call telling me that I am in a “high flood area” and not to travel.
It isn’t even raining yet but I will go button down the hatches.
Greetings People! Sorry to get here a bit tardy.
So trumpets please… Finifinito gets out of the hospital today!!! Send my man some love.
Mucho thanks to RBG who helped with the tech stuff today.
That’s great that he get’s out today!
buckets of rain
buckets of tears
got all them buckets commin outa my ears
i really ain’t in no spin or don’t know what it is. i guess i’m still into Iowa and pissed that msm isn’t giving edwards a mention. But it’s warmer in Central FL.
Nice. I love that song.
hwy, good luck to people in the rain areas. you guys are smart, so i.m sure you’ll be ok - as much as you can be. ahrd to do much about floods i guess.
From to Lahoma.

How bad is it up there Teddy? We’re still waiting for the “terrential” part.
Hi, LA kids, and thanks for the jazz. Portland, OR is fairly dry right now, but apparently they had to close 80 miles of highway in the Columbia Gorge due to high winds and low visibility. I’m sure it’ll rain like hell this weekend, which is too bad, because I want to try my new quad skates outdoor.
Eat good food and laugh a lot, everybody!
Don’t let the Rain Come Down.
Just got a call from emergency services to watch for mud slides.
happy new year donita
great show
al
Since we’re on the topic of rain…..

Samson, good luck to you.
I mean what records are you spinning this week on your turntable? Or what’s spinning in your head or other hard drives?
Thanks for the wonderful news about fini, Donita!
and I’m really enjoying you playlist today.
sorry you pups on the west coast are drenched.
Lotsa of love and good energy to fini.
Yes sweetie. I’m hoping to come back to Brazil sometime in August as well as this February. If you can afford to get to any of the shows, I’ll put you on our guest list, so don’t worry about the cost of the tickets to the show.
70 mile an hour gusts on the Golden Gate bridge;
trucks overturned on the Richmond bridge; it’s now closed.
76 mile an hour winds on Twin Peaks, here in the city.
Half a million without power
hey donita
happy new year to you!
what exciting things do you have planned for 2008?
RIP Oscar Peterson.
love the video & playlist
nora
sounds like a total disaster, hope you safe and dry.
wow. You guys are getting what we in michigan get on a semi regular basis. the summer thunderstorms and late fall tornado seasons get those kinda windbursts. Good luck to you guys and keep safe!

I have to go now, see yous next week
In response to Kathryn in MA @ 22 and Donita Sparks @ 35
Thanks for wishing me luck! :-) I guess I’ll make it somehow.
In response to YoungJess @ 12
Thanks for the link. I just checked out the related songs from the same band.
In response to Donita Sparks @ 24
Good news. Hope to see him here again soon.
In response to YoungJess @ 34
Great song. Thanks for posting!
RIP Andy Olmsted, aka G’Kar, he was tragically killed in Iraq! Obsidian Wings has it…

Teddy - holy shit!! take care of yourself and Paul.
Happy thoughts to FINI!!
Jesus! That’s so sci fi about the monster jellyfish swarms. Great, another thing for me to worry about.
Minus the torrential amounts of rain though. *raises an eyebrow at the 8 inches of rain* But the wind? oh boy do we get the wind.
Hell’s Bells, TSF. You & fiance in an ok area? Stay safe.
Maybe it just wasn’t the perfect job for you. Not getting that particular job could have been the best thing to happen. I’ve found that to be true sometimes in my experience. You’ll find out later and wipe your brow.
Sounds pretty bad. Hope you are OK.
Donita, I’m usually offline when your thread comes up- this jazz is primo. Listening to Art Blakey right now. So fine…
Should be some mighty fine skiing in Squaw where I used to live (Tahoe City) after this thing is done. ;0)
Reverse 911s AND giant swarming jellyfish! HELP ME!
We are fine, but getting a little housebound-ish. Power still on, yay!
The zoo is closed again today, due to trees down which may enable animals to escape.
Glad to hear Mr Fini is getting out of the hospital today!
Thanks Al
Dang. Stay safe, Teddy.
Rain and WIND! here in Folsom. Big rigs blown over while sitting still on hwy 80. Looks like whiteout tonight over the Sierra. We’ve had 60mph gusts with 40 mph sustained winds since early this am. Wind dropping now, moving up into the mountains. Another blast tomorrow. Stay dry CA pups!
When Mrs. Peterr was pregnant with our little seven years ago, she rode the ferry across the SF Bay to and from her lab. She never had any morning sickness, but a couple of days she had to deal with storms on the Bay close to what you’ve got today, and she came home more than a bit pale from the experience.
Time to grab a festive Friday beverage, Teddy, and snuggle up with someone to keep each other warm.
They are predicting over 10 feet of snow by Sunday night in the ski areas around Tahoe. It’ll be great when you can finally get to it. Most of the ski areas closed today because of the high winds.
For a very special pal of ours in Lake Tahoe. We’re thinking of you in all this weather. Wish we we’re going to Squaw to shoose down. Lahoma, you and me.

animals escaping?!?!

We miss the Lake and Squaw. ;0)
oopsie . . .
Stay safe and warm and dry, you and everyone out there. And please keep the power on, powers that be. Teddy without the internets would be kinda awful.
Here. We’ve got nuttin’
Good news on fini.
Wine thirty time around here.
Happy Rainy Friday Donita
love the playlist
ever see jazz on a summer’s night? beautiful doc on Newport Jazz Fest.
Kirkwood is my personal favorite. A little less crowded and off the beaten path. Great fly fishing area in the warmer months too.
email from Bill Richardson just now:
Doesn’t sound as much like he’s trying to be Hillary’s Veep anymore, does it?
Haven’t skied near Tahoe in a good long while but damn, the powder was thick & great as I remember. Friends close to Reno emailed to say it’s snowing like a mother up there.
When it comes to earthquakes, fires, droughts and weather, Californians are tuff. When they deem it necessary.
I remember seeing Oscar Peterson play eons ago when I lived in NYC. It was at NYU. He hummed rather loudly while he plays so if there’s a mike anywhere near his face, watch out. On some recordings you can hear it. A spirited man was he.
Gotta love that packed powder. Can you imagine spring skiing this year?! ;0)
OT
quelle surprise, Trent Lott is in business.
Kirkwood is great. Did most of my skiing at Squaw and a little at Alpine Meadows. We’d ski all day and then go down to Boreal for night skiing.
Can, & it’s tempting, if I just could get some time to go up there.
That is so funny because in another YouTube of him, I was hearing what you’re writing about, but I couldn’t see his lips move so it was driving me crazy, I know some drummers that grunt when they play, which gets difficult during recording.
RevDeb, I’m shocked, just shocked.
As a matter of fact, this calls for some shockolate.
Trent Lott. He is a rather distasteful piece of work. Isn’t he.
OK People, I’m out. Have a great weekend. Fight the Power!
Ah, good old Borehole. My daughter and her friends love to zip up for the evening to snowboard and carouse.
Another Mississippi cuthroat is Guv. Haley Barbour. Lahoma thinks he looks like Orson Wells.
Hope the dems slam the door in his face.
I have no idea what he’s singing here but it sure sounds nice — feels nice too

Evening, Donita. Thanks for the great tunes.
If I’m getting 40 mph gusts up here in Vancouver I can imagine whats going on down Cali way…..
70 mph gusts here on my California ridgetop (yes, only real dorks have anemometers on the roof).
Woo Hoo - just got power back on the central CA coast. Thanks for the great playlist Donita. You southern CA pups stay warm and dry - this storm front is wild, wet and windy. Checked in with Suz by cell phone a few hours ago and they are hoping to get power back tonight or morning at latest.
For you Howard Dean fans he is live on CSpan 1 - love having power again.
That sucks! I hope it is sooner than later… Late Nite is not the same w/o Suz!
BTW, BT has a new post up!
Major Holly on bass used to do the same thing.
Glad to hear that about Suz. I was a bit worried about her up in Bolder Creek, it can get quite nasty in the Santa Cruz mountains. Here in Redwood city it seems as if it is letting up, wind has died down but the rain is still coming down.
My in-laws drove down route 1 today to Pacific Grove, they got to the motel but there is no power and all the restaurants are closed. Innkeeper is trying to get pizza for the guests, at least they are safe and have a fire in the fireplace. Hopefully Suz will get power and the internet back for the late late night.!
Thanks. That made my week.
