I think Rove was being sincere about authenticity. As George Lakoff points out, people perceive truth through authenticity and trust. The way people perceive ”truth” as told by say, a politician, these 3 elements come into play:

1) Does the politician believe what he/she is saying?
2) Is the politician trying to deceive me in some way that harms me and/or helps him/her?
3) Is it true (what the politician is saying)?

Lakoff states that authenticity and trust is established through numbers 1 and 2 while number 3 is least important.

George W. Bush came across as authentic (initially) because people trusted that Bush believed what he was saying. Over time, more and more Americans figured out what he was really up to (minus 25% of our population who still trust him).

So for Rove, if you are a good liar who comes across with authenticity and whose deception is not easily detected, he’ll like you.

The scary part here is people will believe a person who is authentically self-deluded. How do we address this problem? Seems we need to be hyper-vigilant in combatting their false framing with powerful, truthful alternative framing.

Too clever for their own good comes to mind.

Yep. I would say that. Law of the unintended outcome in spades.

Could somebody ask what Rove’s budget is? Is it too much to expect working journalists (you know, at the networks and the big newspapers who have degrees in journalism) to do their jobs and ask questions or connect the dots? Do any of them know how to use the internets? Or does Karl pay them too? I think we are all sick to death of the games and the tricks. Too clever for their own good comes to mind.

The hidden part is they lie about the actual amount of inflation and manipulate the prices of the goods in the inflation basket - this is compounded by not publishing the amount of money printed anymore (and you can bet they are printing a shitload by looking at how weak the dollar is).

The last whammy is that we have seen for decades wages dont go up much and are first to go down in a dowbturn and last to go up in a rebound (not at all this time). Also impacting is that poor and middle class have little diversification (mostly expenses and some cash savings).
