The split in the Republican entourage is fundamentalist vs authoritarian.
Brooks, a likudnik neocon, has no respect for the hillbilly christers that
his type have milked for votes since 1980, so he must morph Huck into a
more “modern” authoritarian, IL DUCE from New York style, in hopes of
riding another wave of resentment into the fall election. Don’t laugh, it
has happened before.

David Brooks. Out of his depth in his film role as Eyegore: “I don’t know Mahster, but it’s ALIVE.” Still out of his depth trying to spin American politics so as to calm the RabidWing, assure the Oligarchs, and spin the incompetence of the White House.

The Oligarchs are scared shitless at having unleased the fundamentalists as the foot soldiers of the GOP. They might not know how to do what the Oligarchs want done. So Bobo fantasize himself writing for the Roman senate as they lament the “seismic event” of a barbarian general threatening to become emperor leading a “new coalition” born again under the cross. Memo to Bobo: this is the 21st century, and American can’t afford to be led by another ruthless, incompetent, ignorant hack.

Mr. Brooks’ soft, penny loafered feet have never quite filled Bill Safire’s steel-toed hobnailed boots as The Times resident conservative hack. I wonder how much that has to do with Mr. Rosenthal’s hiring of his old buddy, Bill Kristol to beef up the Times’ conservative cred. My guess is that instead of getting Bionic Conservative duo, he’ll end up with McBobo and Kristol tied together in a three-legged race to the bottom. Couldn’t happen to a better newspaper.
