"Huckabee’s victory is not a step into the past. It opens up the way for a new coalition." -- David Brooks on Mike Huckabee's Iowa win last night
"He's got an entirely new coalition for the Republican Party. He says he's remaking the Republican Party, and this speech is the logical and really breathtakingly daring attempt to do that. So as an observer, it's just been great the watch and really potentially a seismic event." -- David Brooks on John McCain's New Hampshire win. In 2000.
___
What a piece of work McBobo is. He's trying to spin Huck's win -- which came on the backs of the same fundie shock troops that Rove mobilized for W. in '00 and '04 -- as some Glorious New Movement In Conservative Politics, the kind he discovered 8 years ago when McCain won New Hampshire.
Huckabee won because he tapped into realities that other Republicans have been slow to recognize. First, evangelicals have changed. Huckabee is the first ironic evangelical on the national stage. He’s funny, campy (see his Chuck Norris fixation) and he’s not at war with modern culture.
Yeah, those Iowa evangelicals and fans of "Walker Texas Ranger" -- notorious connoisseurs of irony. And W is at war with modern culture? Really?
Huckabee understands much better than Mitt Romney that we have a crisis of authority in this country. People have lost faith in their leaders’ ability to respond to problems.
Indeed. And nobody's ever run on throwing the bums out when the sitting President is hugely unpopular. And jeebus, how many times has W railed against "Washington insiders"?
Huckabee understands how middle-class anxiety is really lived.
It truly is groundbreaking for a Republican to talk to the middle class. You see, W's "compassionate conservatism" schtick wasn't messaged for the unwashed masses -- it was targeting Wall Street, the energy oligarchs and the defense industry. Because those groups were really concerned that conservative governance didn't address their needs.
Who the hell does McBobo think he's fooling with this crap?
But here's my favorite quote from that Brooks' 2000 appearance on NewsHour:
"...religious conservatives have grown less powerful and certainly less organized this time than they were four years ago or eight years ago."
McBobo: still laughably wrong, after all these years.

Blue Texan!
Zed from airport!
Yup!
Damn. Hi, BT!
BADA BING x3
Now three times in a row today. That’s enough for the day.
Except that this “coalition” is notably tiny. No Neocon support in the MSM, no big business support, no Fear For Your Lives support from the middle class, no libertarian support etc. etc. As is so often the case Bobo Brooks pens a piece of fiction - something he would like to see happening but which is not.
That is an insult to all pieces of work around the globe. Brooks hits the NY Times columnist trifecta: mind-blowingly obtuse, always wrong, writes like a root-canal with no anesthesia.
no zed from the airport or from anywhere else…*g*
The coalition of the Diehard Bush supporters are pouring it on for Huckabee. Good for what, about 30%?
Huckabee-Cheney ‘08!
If you look up “wanker” in the dictionary there’s a portrait of Bobo, cross-referenced to “wrong.”
And pigs will fly. What f*cking new coalition is Brooks talking about? It exists only in his head? What has he been smoking? Maybe the Gray Lady was on to something when it hired Bill Kristol–as neocon backup columnist.
Bobo, ever on the cutting edge of mendacity.
Umm, yeah. Because it’s not like modern culture has anything whatsoever to do with a rational view of the universe that excludes the possibility that it was created by a magical being up in the sky specially for us
Dem and Indie voters last night for Dem candidates were double those for Rethugs suggesting that 30% would be about it-if that!
Ya bastid.
Well, poor Bobo was just trying to slap a coat of lipstick on the pig…
God forgive me, but I must point out that Bill Richardson has to stay in the race, because his other gig closed up shop after its second season.
Vee haf vays of dealing wiz people who post stuff like that without spew alrts….
So what does it mean to be “really potentially”? If something is real, it is not potential. If it is potential, it is not real.
Which basically means McBobo is a member in good standing of the chattering class of the VSP beltway insiders.
OT New Froomkin up A Sudden Concern About The Economy (translated means more tax cuts)
Yup!!
Glenn Greenwald has some quotes up showing how Republican pundits wisely predicted Huckabee falling apart in Iowa.
wow, after a huckabee win someone can actually say that with a straight face
Ha! I predicted this yesterday. Of course, it was pretty obvious. Economy doing well? We need a tax cut. Economy tanking? We need a tax cut.
Well, he’s not called Babbling Brooks for nothing.
I just finished a bag of popcorn,I am going to need a lot more.
Watching the right wing prognosticators fall all over like the Keystone cops is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
Also, seems as if they are seeing the writing on the wall even more clearly - Dem victory around the corner. What to do? more tax cuts now, while it is still possible!
I guess that the ‘M’ in Bush’s honorary MBA stands for magic because his
approach to all economic problems requires magical thinking.
The reality is that Bush wants to grab as much for himself, his family, and his cronies as he can while he still can.
man, it is SO frustrating
each and every time one of their novel ideas fails, there solution is more of that novel idea
what?…invading iraq is causing more terrorism, well then, let’s invade Iran
what?…occupying Iraq is creating more terrorism?…well then, let’s get more soldiers in there
what?…privitizing Iraq with foreign contractors is causing the infrastructure to fail?…well then, let’s get more private foreign industry to do the repairs
what?…lowering taxes for the wealthy without targeting struggling industry frigs up our economy?…well, of course the solution is to lower taxes more
Maybe they’ll realize that supporting a fake Christian was a really bad idea.
In the real world, we call doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results insanity.
Bobo said that in 2000, not in 2008… But he was still wrong then too, because if they were less powerful and less organized they would not have produced a Huckabee in 2008. Huckabee is in no way an outsider to evangelicals…
EPU’d from last thread:
Oh, that just proves that you’re part of the librul “reality based” world. Remember, they make their own reality.
Bobo is funny and campy, but not in the way he intends…
I wonder what color the sky is in their reality.
Where are you going?
I’m not sure, but from the way they’re squealing right now it seems to be falling!
Looks like the Republican Party has engineered its’ own Tar Baby, i.e., the Religious Reich and Huckleberry Hound. I don’t think they’re going to be able to detach themselves from this one.
I think this fits under “be careful what you pray for, you might get it.”
Biodun - to go back to your earlier comment on Edwards. I think the money issue will be a factor for a while. Also I am curious about who is likely to do better in the South, Obama or Edwards. Though, in principle the election can be won elsewhere. Neg. for Edwards - Elizabeth is sounding somewhat whiny (and is not as disciplined as she might be in terms of the campaign - though that is why I love her so much). Bama’s wife has a Jackie Kennedy sort of appeal and is as tough (disciplined) as nails while also exuding warmth. Also, there is the Oprah factor which was important in Iowa no doubt, and can be brought into play as well. Note too Obama beat Edwards both among women and in terms of union households (30 to 24). Also Obama beat edwards in people who want change and those who say health care is the most important issue, ditto economy, and Iraq and Pakistan as the most important issue. He also won above high and low income people. Also, because Edwards is not in Congress anymore (and has pushed against their support, i.e. business) he may get more tepid response from them and their funds.
Back to NYC from Florida. I was down here freezing with Beerfart.
The opposite.
You guys have all the fun. You missed yesterday’s 18 degrees, 5 with windchill, in NYC.
In fact, I am on the plane now, waiting to taxi out to the runway.
You and me both, Busted.
On your Blackberry?
Ot:
Grats to Obama. 2nd grats to Edwards. Both gave good speaches afterwards.
I can only hope Obama gets to the devil of the details and gets away from hanging with Liberliar and the insider machine.
Poor speach by Clinton. I think she drops a point or two a day in NH and Obama takes it (Indies can reg on the day of primary).
Met Cong. Hodes at luch in Nashua, NH. Seen him on commitie on CSPAN and thanked him and asked he kick it up a notch.
Sad that I am at dentist and will miss the Edwards speech going on now. Hope to see Obama tomorrow if kid duty allows. Gonna vote for Edwards - but hope Obama will get a bit specific and that will put him back ahead of Clinton in ny book (put Clinton up there since it seems much the same with her being more experienced - Obama obv a better speaker).
Nope, the Oprah factor failed in Iowa. Hillary got the majority of votes among women (white and black) over 45 years old–Oprah’s base, while Obama got the majority of votes among white women under 30–actually among the generation under 30 in general.
The Oprah factor, however, might work for Obama in South Carolina. We shall see.
‘Berry acting as broadband modem for my laptop.
For another take on the not-so-loved cornHucksters;
http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/8391.html
Safe home.
I liked her speech. In fact, of all the top three Dems, she is the one I would most like to have a beer with.
TX! Enjoy your ski trip.
BTW Brooks’ take on Huckabee is a riff on the old meme that it is always good if it is Republican. So having a religious (but affable, mustn’t forget that) nutcase like Huckabee can only be good for Republicans because it really potentially does something or other.
On the R side, I’d like most to have a beer with Romney. Then I’d get both beers.
Or laptop with wireless, wifi or bluetooth. Those work on planes on the runway too…*g*
Um, bad criteria — isn’t Idiot-in-Chief enough proof of that?
Huckabee/Ted Haggard!!
Hey, at least it covers *all* of the fundies!
Maybe he’s fooling his bosses at Pravda on Hudson
Chuck Norris is a signal to fundamentalists that
Allah AkbarGod is Great! I think his invovlement is really fasinating, because to most Americans, he is an ’80s action figure. But he and his wife go on tour promoting religion in school.I first noticed this when I saw billboards in Las Vegas promoting a Chuck Norris performance. Not at Caesar’s Palace, mind you, rather a freeway-fronting Mega-Church in Henderson, NV. So Chuck’s Q-score is still high with the fundie crowd, but he flies well below the radar of the other Repugs.
Go Chuck! Kick ‘em in the teeth! Bite their heads off with out anyone seeing it coming! Rapture on, Chuck!!!

You might want to check out my comment on this morning’s employment report, if you didn’t see it already.

On topic I find the opposite to be true - and since liar is saying the opposite as they always do that is perfect. The Rs always living in the bizzaro liar world.
Huck will not get votes from fiscal - but could make a play for Raygun Dems - but gonna be hard sell after 8 years of hell. Mitt gets pt no pot Evabgelical votes. I think the only worry is the only one with Foreign policy experience (and the media will play this up with any fear events). The insider McCain will get some evangelical votes and almost all establishment and fiscal consv votes. He will also hold some Independents. To boot I have heard real people laud his father figure credentials! Only thing he lacks is Mitts looks.
On the R side, I’d like most to have a beer with Romney. Then I’d get both beers.
Incorrigible, you are.
I’m highly in favor of that.
Good luck with that. But I hear she once drunk McCain under the table in Moscow. (They were drinking vodka, BTW.)
I’ll drink to that.
It was cold, wasn’t it? Today’s overcast but a little warmer. It’s supposed to warm up over the weekend. People will still be wearing gloves.
Now about this new coalition. Is it the bringing together of the white, right-wing male faction of the GOP with white, right-wing male faction of the GOP. Look,to build a coalition, there need different types of people with some differing beliefs. Huckabee is uniting vanilla with vanilla and getting… surprise …. vanilla. Seismic. Brooks is a loon.
Very funny.
One thing that makes me very proud to be a D in this prez election (all my complaints about the party temporarily aside) is to see our candidates all lined up for the debates, and compare that picture with the Rs. Warms my heart.
There is no coalition. Bobo is dreaming one up. He’s been smoking something–or drinking too much vodka, or both. Bobo should get into a vodka drinking contest (pace my 66). In fact, he should get into a three-way contest with Hill and McCain.
Perhaps you could call it a “coalition of the willing,” in the same usage as U.S. partners in Iraq. No one’s willing anymore. What are the odds that Rove’s strategy will turn out to have exactly the opposite of the intended outcome, put the R party into permanent minority?
Bobo is also an uninspiring idiot which is probably why the NYT bought in William the Bloody to fire up new neocons.
Interesting TPM has up Howard Kurtz’ question as to whether the FEC will shut down Edwards funding. Hmmm, hadn’t thought of it in terms of the Hillary question. She certainly would love it and I wouldn’t put it past the DCC to arrangefor that to happen. Hmmm.
Re: coalition(s):
I did hear somethere that Obama is quite interested in putting one together, for a postracial, postpartisan, postpolitical, and even postideological society…
I don’t want to have a beer with any of them. I would like to meet them all.
Me too. I read malkin today and the R’s are goofing on Huck (and the Iowa voters/caucusers for choosing him) because he doesn’t know about foreign policy. Which of them has any foreign policy credentials? Romney? Giulianni? C’mon. No and no. NcCann can claim the most and he thinks he can shop in Baghdad like he can at Englishtown.
Do tell!
Might as well ad Post Partum Dpression if he thinks he can do all the rest.
*G*
Alas, I am an academic deeply involved in an array of such “posts” and often times the “posts” are as much about promoting related wedges as bringing folks together. But, I like the “idea” of it.
Well, I was thinking of diversity, in reference to your comment about vanilla on the R side, but breath of policy knowledge is certainly another differentiating factor.
Here’s AP helping to set the stage for tomorrow’s debate:
Linky: http://www.nytimes.com/aponlin.....lysis.html
I knew that. I wrote that for your benefit. Am glad you took the bait…*g*
(Disclosure: Me, am glad to be a refugee from academia.)
David Brooks couldn’t discover his ass
got me! *g* That makes 4 for you today. What happens in the Sopranos after Bada Bing?! Careful where you step. *g-back* By the way, and totally OT - I love Wired.
“President Huckabee”
I’m sorry, but I just can’t say that with a straight face.
Maybe a shot or two of vodka will help…
Fuck it, just give me the bottle.
OT -fabulous photoshop of Lieberlier’s photo with NcCain up at Crooks and Liars under the headding “White Head” - shows the image of Lieberman’s butt as he shuffles off after NcCain. Cheeky. God that guy needs to get a life.
Lieberlier as Whitehead is so apt - a pimple - full of puss and oozing.
You talking about zeds? 3 in a row. ccmask once told me that 3 in a row is good, but 4 in a row is bad news. I really took that to heart…
Yah the zeds - good on you! But does it count if for # 4 you write simply “another one” ?
BTW Richmond:
I love Wired too. I get most of my techie ideas from it. My 17-year-old son also hearts Wired. No surprise there. He bails his mom out of techie trouble all the time.
Nice try but no cigar. Are you into making up your own reality as well? *G*
Is being a zed hog really consistent with a lefty blog? Shouldn’t one share?
Does Brooksie stick the enema nozzle in his ear?
-G
I know you’re into communitarian stuff and all that (*g*). But I do share zeds. Just ask Ann in AZ and others.
Waaay OT, but I thought some of you here mae enjoy a litle gardening/political humor. The cover of the Spring 2008 Plant Delights catalog is here: Plant Delights
(Includes Hillary, Dick, AGAG, and more)
Christy has a new post upstairs about Mukasey and transcripts.
If you go upstairs to the new Christy post, you’ll see what I mean in my 94.
Aren’t these Iowa fundamentalists the same “coalition” that won the state’s GOP caucuses for Pat Robertson over Veep Bush in 1988? What’s changed, exactly?
How long must the nation endure McBoBo, Russert, Matthews, and all the other Beltway pundits and bloviators. These people are truly insufferable.
David Brooks. Out of his depth in his film role as Eyegore: “I don’t know Mahster, but it’s ALIVE.” Still out of his depth trying to spin American politics so as to calm the RabidWing, assure the Oligarchs, and spin the incompetence of the White House.
The Oligarchs are scared shitless at having unleased the fundamentalists as the foot soldiers of the GOP. They might not know how to do what the Oligarchs want done. So Bobo fantasize himself writing for the Roman senate as they lament the “seismic event” of a barbarian general threatening to become emperor leading a “new coalition” born again under the cross. Memo to Bobo: this is the 21st century, and American can’t afford to be led by another ruthless, incompetent, ignorant hack.
Mr. Brooks’ soft, penny loafered feet have never quite filled Bill Safire’s steel-toed hobnailed boots as The Times resident conservative hack. I wonder how much that has to do with Mr. Rosenthal’s hiring of his old buddy, Bill Kristol to beef up the Times’ conservative cred. My guess is that instead of getting Bionic Conservative duo, he’ll end up with McBobo and Kristol tied together in a three-legged race to the bottom. Couldn’t happen to a better newspaper.
The split in the Republican entourage is fundamentalist vs authoritarian.
Brooks, a likudnik neocon, has no respect for the hillbilly christers that
his type have milked for votes since 1980, so he must morph Huck into a
more “modern” authoritarian, IL DUCE from New York style, in hopes of
riding another wave of resentment into the fall election. Don’t laugh, it
has happened before.
