g’evening ya’ll
((((((SUZ!))))))
Good music choice Suz
Very nice tune, Suz!
Soulshine lyrics
I agree…!
Hey Suzanne,
I’m here for a little while. How’s the cabin in the woods?
Back to my last ?? how sex scandals did the Repubs get caught for last year??
And we have a foot of snow, but no woods.
Has Obama offered the other candidates positions in his presidency? Apparently Biden and Richardson may now endorse him if they lose out tomorrow.
I do not understand this.
Still for sale and hunkered down for a storm coming tomorrow that is supposed to bring strong winds, rain and such until Sat or Sun.
i expect i’ll lose power at some point.
Did anybody else get the Ann Coulter add here on FDL? I clicked it just so she’d have to pay for the click. Was that a bad thing?
Bad. Very, very bad.
it does not matter. dem’s however is a whole nutter thang according to the media. only d scandals should air.
g’evening, pups. I showed up right before late late posted, & had to double check the url. Sports? Late Nite? I was one bewildered ndfg. (kidding, it was great to see Christy & other fans having fun)
Hi Suzanne.
ANyone interested in news?
Green Funerals Catch on in the US
from HORN News by NeoNinja
From Celsias: You’ve probably read an infinite amount of articles offering tips on how to “green” your life, but now you have the opportunity to “green” your death. Morbid? Yes. Earth-friendly? You bet. Referred to as “composting at its best” by Cynthia Beal, owner of The Natural Burial Company, eco-friendly burial products have made their way into the […]
thanks for that sacrifice, wigwam. i get much pleasure out of clicking that beast every time it shows up just so the money goes to the lake.
Lockheed to Pay $2.5 Million In Racial Discrimination Case
Washington Post – 1 hour ago
By Darryl Fears The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission yesterday announced its largest-ever settlement for an individual racial discrimination case — $2.5 million — against Lockheed Martin of Bethesda.
I got a Hillary ad.

Foley
Man on Dog (does that count?)
Florida pedophile republican who killed himself
The minister sweetie from Colorado
I know there must be more but I am getting sort of sick.
Wired Science (iirc) had a segment on last week (or maybe week before) about the whole green funeral industry that more and more people are using.
I did see it! Did not click.
my kids told me a number of years ago that they’d have me cremated & then put my ashes in a compost pile destined for a rose garden. As an avid composter, i was touched.
New “fire safe” cigarettes on the way for Texas
A new state law is trying to put out some of the dangers of smoking cigarettes. Starting in January 2009, all cigarettes sold in Texas will have to be “fire-safe.”
Excellent.
we’ve had those ‘firesafe’ smokes in ca for a year now. they go out if not actively being smoked is the idea – prevents smoldering cigs from causing fires is the idea.
didn’t see it I don’t know if I could stomach it. She is such a self centered person who continusly spews crap just to try(?) and get you to buy her book (rag)
Wouldn’t it work out better if they just stick you in the rose garden without the burning part?
Yeah, Suz – that’s a great tune! Love the B3/Wurli combo – my kind of setup!
anyone know what time the caucusing starts tomorrow?
Wouldn’t compost correctly, you are not supposed to put meat in the compost, now ashes thats a different animal… trace elements and all!
I believe 7 pm CST
I had found a live version of Gov’t Mule playing soulshine, a much better and longer clip, at a club in europe but it was pulled from utube(eyes rolling)
early evening.
thanks nahant
I have heard that cremation pollutes the air. Specially if you ate at McDonalds a lot.
Probably illegal in most states.
Aw thats just the fat burning off!
judas forking priest – i am soooo glad i am not eating right now
You can put meat and poop in compost, but it needs to be really good compost where the internal heat kills the bacteria and such. Most people don’t put meet in there because of the critters it draws. I have enough trouble keeping my dogs from eating cantaloupe rinds and sweet potato skins . . .
i think they were worried about neighborhood dogs and raccoons exhuming the body, i’ve lectured them enough about meat products in the compost.
See more of what i have selected as today’s news and blog picks at Reality-Based News & Blog Feed, which is now updating every two hours.
I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow. Good night all.
Suz a little late to be eating don’t ya think, talk about holding to them them calories and all.
pain free sleep wishes tex and keep us posted re the doc appt please… hoping for good news tomorrow for you
oops – it should be meat. wish we could self-correct.
Bwahaha! good one.
we got big head todd & the monsters over at skippy’s late nite music club.
working the nite shift, i usually get up in the mid-afternoon so this is really my lunch time.
they are good but they don’t top my gov’t mule, skippy
The other problem with trying to become compost to your roses is that you ruin the rose garden with the back hoe it takes to dig the hole!
Yes but it sure takes a lot longer to decompose and then who wants meat in their tomatoes. personally I use good oily fish in the bottom of the hole I am planting my maters in.
A truly barfucious effort, but each click counts for the Lake.
Well, I’m going to head off to bed like Betsy. But I have to get up to take my niece to help friends exercise the horses they are horse-sitting for.
I didn’t realize clicking made money for the home team. Gonna start.
Did you guys see Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s facebook page?
I love his favorite quotes. Good kid.
g’nite gnome
Good luck hope all is well. I see my oncologist on Friday before surgery on the 24th.
This reminds me of History International Channel’s Worst Jobs in History. Poor guy almost pukes with each job, no matter the decade.
An Iowa win that would be narrow, for any of the top 3, doesn’t mean at all they are in the general.
But if you like way too early speculation, Bozo the clown could do a much better job than former provost Condi Blahnik Rice who has killed a lot of people and irreversibly harmed foreign policy for the U.S. for a generation.
It’s awfully early to be promising LOL upon LOL Secretary of State before Iowa’s caucuses that include a tiny fraction of Iowa voters.
I wouldn’t put any stock in that article just because it got on the Huff post. A lot of speculative crap gets posted on Ariana’s site.
Another great choice, Suzanne… Matt Abts, great drummer and one of my best friends… thanks for this!
Sometimes Huffpo can be a bit trashy.
Goodnight, sleepers.
Isn’t he gorgeous? I wish him well. What a path he has before him.
Beck – Lost Cause
please keep us posted
Best of wishes, nahant.
OK, now to bed for real (and to start leafing through the stack of seed catalogs that the mailman decided to finally deliver today.)
I totally agree. Huffpo is challenging the supermarket rags lately in many respects.
I saw a graphic earlier where in Bill Clinton’s first run, he got about 2-3% of the votes in the Iowa caucus. He was not only dead last in Iowa, he was incredibly last. But where he finished was what counted.
A little bit, and sometimes more than a little which is interesting, because she hired some pretty competent people lately to help beef up her site.
There are so many worthwhile sites on the web for information politically and otherwise. Early on I used to hit that site when it first started, but lately a lot of places would come before it. Some of the categories besides politics are *fun I guess. Bill Maher posts there and I always like to hear what he’s got to say. I think he’s on Letterman tomorrow night.
well, you didn’t think they were goint to endorse a girl, did ya?
sheesh!
(just my guess, anyway)
Thanks all but this just the beginning, they are going to do arthroscopic procedure and treat the lesion with chemotherapy. I should get out the next day or two and then I will then wait for a liver transplant. such fun worst phone call I ever got.
Huffpo directed me to FDL right after FDL was started.
What about Edwards? Maybe his hair problems were too girlie for them.
Wow.
Good thoughts from these parts.
(((nahant)))
too true! hadn’t thought of that…
Did anyone see Letterman tonight? Anyone catch why he’s doing an impersonation of “The Beard”?
(”The Beard” = Wolf Blitzer for those that don’t know)
Good luck nahant. We are all pulling for you.
Nelson, it has not aired yet on the West Coast – I heard Letterman grew a beard while off.
Persi gave me an excellent link on David Hicks…
http://www.theage.com.au/news/…..40250.html
doesn’t TDS come back tonight too? and colbert?
These kind of things makes you enjoy it while you can! But on the bright my youngest daughter just had third girl… I think she is trying to catch up to me (six kids) now six grandkids. You just have to find things to keep you going!
You have to watch it. Yes, he did. Why do you think I asked what I did. ;-) I didn’t know he grew one while away so it came as a suprise tonight.
I think Edwards and Clinton would be smart to team up on the rest of ‘em…
I wish Hillary and Edwards would get together on a ticket. And I don’t care which one is the lead. (Well really I do, but this Obama nonsense has to stop.)
I understand. I didn’t mean to intimate there isn’t much worthwhile there, but it is awful early to start promising cabinet posts. I have to say though, when I read that just the thought of Joe Biden pushing Condi out the door made me smile big time.
If you google any current political item, and set google to put a lot of hits on one page to make it even easier, you can come up with an incredible number of sites ayk whose “blog roll” on the sides will intro you to an awful lot of good quality stuff.
The amount of time people will spend researching and posting worthwhile stuff and otherwise on the web is pretty amazing to me.
How in the world though to get it all read, and a lot of us still insist on reading newspapers.
OMG. So sorry you have to go through this. As Suz said, keep us posted. We’ll try to cheer you up and send our positive vibes.
I like a lot about Huffpo, particularly her news and blogroll.
we are getting pretty good at sending those warm, positive thoughts out to pups, LooHoo. one of the things i like most about the lake is the way we pups care about each other. we are a family of sorts here in the middle of the night :)
Thanks Loo Hoo I hope they will let me take my laptop with me and of course that they also have a connection for me to use. Other wise I will be doing a lot of reading Shock Doctrine.
Naomi sure knows her shit!
Jinx, OC!!
A family by choice.
I actually think it would be a pretty good ticket either way also…
ditto
Good night all.
yes ma’am, and we squabble just like kin does :)
‘night, Mary…
g’nite marymcc
Yup.
I sure hope things go as well as possible. Good luck.
Night, Mary. Get that Union rabblerouser job!
Mary? Shit-disturber Deluxe…
Good Luck Mary!
Nuh-uh, do not… ;-)
mary is exactly what i would look for in a union rabblerouser
uh huh, do so
Aloha, Mary!
Thanks Pete!
Hi newtonusr! Mary said she’s thinking about a Union organizer type job. 3-6 month training period before the fun begins.
hmmm no TDS here – i musta heard wrong or mis-remembered it wrong
Here’s a great letter to the editor of the NYTimes on their New Years’ editorial:
(Trying italics one more time…)
To the Editor:
Thank you for eloquently stating what I and many Americans feel about the grossly disturbing distortion of our democracy and our morals by President Bush and his administration.
Your editorial stops short, however, in one key respect: it does not properly admonish the current Democratic-controlled Congress for its complicity in these terribly sad affairs. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have been woefully ineffective in combating the horrendous policies of this administration, and history will, I believe, also judge their inaction harshly and unsympathetically and appropriately so.
Robert Paul Malchow
Oak Park, Ill., Dec. 31, 2007
good, not just the coasts bitching about it.
well, good night everyone – tomorrow should be an exciting day…
ps – loohoo, the italics worked
good link I was reading from Rawstory: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080107/hayes
Swift boating is back in the air! I was wondering when they would show up with their money Mitt and McCain’s getting the lions share of it. I sure can’t understand McCain taking their money being a nam vet. I sure this will turn off a lot of vets that I know.
g’nite oc
John Edwards may accept Hill as VP but cannot imagine Hill accepting anything less than President – Edwards/Dodd works for moi.
I’m finished with late dinner – King crab lasagne, with the last of the leftover artichoke hearts from last summer. The kids and Ms. ET are watching Hairspray, which I’ll save for later. Sort of hanging around to answer questions over at Kos about my kinky poll…
Kids go back to school in four more days – ETette for her last two terms of college. They were watching Mitt Romney a while ago on C-SPAN, and Et, Jr said “He’s better than Comedy Central.”
Aloha, OC!
that sounds like a great dinner ET. (perk) a kinky poll – well, hells bells, i gotta check that out. i’m not a kossack tho but i’m sure the pups here who are will be hitting the recommend button.
Edwards, Yes! But, if Dodd isn’t Prez, I want him as Prez of the Senate…!
Agree on both counts.
John would be nuts, and ill-advised to take the second slot, laying his fate again in the hands of the weaker candidate.
Ha!
Oh man they are forecasting hurricane force winds on the hill tops here in the bay area. Hurricane force winds??? I thought I left that kind of crap back in New England!! gotta button up the house!
nahant, i’m in the santa cruz area – boulder creek and figure i’ll be losing power at some point this weekend. where in the bay area are you?
I hope to hell so. Congress has been the dysfunctional facilitator of everything the Bush law firm Addington, Fielding, and now Gillespie and Mukasey, have orchestrated. I can’t think of a more worthless House and Senate in American history. Just watch them perform on Intell immunity.
I really *grinned* when I saw a statement on TPM Muck that Jello Jay is going to be monitoring the investigation of “DOJ by well um DOJ who else of course were you expecting?” LOL closely.
I know if it’s anyone I want to really hawk an investigation of Mukasey into his own agency, it’s Jello Jay Rockerfeller. Kinda like having Paris Hilton grill someone in Committee.
They did? I don’t see it italicized. You do?
Night OC. It will be an exciting evening!
loohoo, the letter to editor was italiced but not the rest of the post – which is what ya wanna avoid since too much italics causes eye strain in some of us old folks :)
Maybe they should flip a coin! Dodd is great, but I would love to have him take over for Reid.
How are you doing?
What was I thinking – Dodd it is for Prez of the Senate!
President John Edwards/V.P. Maxine Waters ?
howdy!
Redwood city. I have been here for almost 3 years and love it. We still have that sign downtown “Best weather by government test”
I am a believer!!
RWC is great just over the hill from the ocean and away from the maddening crowd when you need it. Suz do you have to travel that lovely road 17 over the hill much?
retired now so not much
That should have been 30 years, boy I gotta learn to type better!
vice president maxine waters?
i like the sound of that
hiya, selise! It is warmer here than many parts of the lower 48 – plus 29F, calm and clear.
then i lived practically next door to you from the mid eights through the early nineties when i rented a little house on selby lane.
ET, I saw your post and the comments over at Kos. You got a squirt gun fight going!
Dang, ET, I just had to vote for Markos’ sensibility… ;-)
no kidding! 4 deg F here in central MA.
i am semi retired forced by the IT squeeze in the valley. I used to advertise on craigs list for home and small business computer support. but now I have to watch out how $$ I make. Medical only lets you earn so much and I can’t afford to lose that coverage now.
Heh, she’d liven up the joint… ;-)
i hear that. when i am old enough for social security, anything i get from them is deducted from my pension check.
Wow just 1/4 mile away!! I am over on Northumberland ave in an Eichler, dead end street and great neighbors!
Doing oh so much better thanks to warmer temps and a decongestant that works well. How are thingys with vous?
(sigh) eichlers are so cool. i love mid century modern.
Depends on how much you get. My brother is still working and getting his SS. But of course he is only being paid $14.00 an hour (slave wages if you ask me)
We love it except for the radiant heat (they used galvanised pipe for the system and it is pretty much shot. So we burn 2 to 3 cord of wood in the Buck stove every year keeps the house toasty.
Back to work on Monday, but enjoying my time off. Glad you’re feeling well. Ready for our big weather weekend? They’re expecting mudslides here, even where there were no fires…
Sounds mah-velous… Ya’ll need to hunker down…
had to google “Eichler” – very cool.
you-all have a great contingent of firepups in the bay area.
Not to someone making $8.90 an hour. I could live on 14$ an hour, but that’s my own stripped down lifestyle. I don’t need much and i have my own bills to pay off. But for others? I imagine it would be, depending on where they live and what assets they have. (me? no house, just the apartment, only me and he danged car to feed.)
ET, I saw your post and the comments over at Kos. You got a squirt gun fight going!
Heh… I’ve read at Kos longer than here, but only joined last month to correct a major error in somebody’s diary. It is even nuttier than this place, but way too big to be a community like fdl is.
Eichlers are very cool. A couple of my friends have lived in them.
Will be ready – need to stack firewood under the eaves, replenish candles supply & stock the cooler with ice and we’ll be all set if we lose power and we often do with winter storms on the central coast.
How about you?
What kind of work do you do, alias?
Eichlers.
Had to google it too!
You and Betsy have my best wishes.
What do you do?? My brother works on computers, li8ke me. you would never find any one to work on them forthat kind of pay. you have to keep up with technology constantly and that takes money and time or it will pass you by and then you would have to work for those kind of wages.
selise, last time i negotiated as a union rep, the federal poverty level for a single in the san jose area was adjusted to anything less than $26,000.
the sf bay area is one of the most expensive places to live. is why i have to sell and move away – too dayam much of my money goes not as far as it should and could elsewhere.
double crap, that was for alias and not selise.
head hanging in shame
I bid ya’ll a fond adieu till the morrow! Aloha Oe!!!
g’nite ct
We can’t move my sweetie is the co-director of a private music school for little ones. You just can’t move a school. So here we stay, we just make ends meet but we love the house and where we live. But all the kids have left the bay area so they can at least buy a house.
I work a pharmacy technician for a retail chain. I started out as a pharmacy cashier and i’ve been nickel and dimed for wages for most of my near 4 years there. I didn’t get the higher raises until after i got the Tech training, and it still doesn’t get me squat. It’s why i’m testing in February for the National Boards and Certification and then i’m getting my skinny but to a hospital where i CAN make those 14$ wages.
Basically, i’m getting paid slave wages for a job that really shouldn’t be payed that poorly. Particularly with what i handle on a daily basis. Drugs and people’s private information.
Suz, have you considered renting your house out and renting elsewhere (I think you said Washington?) until the housing market goes back up?
Night, CT!
no need.. when i decided to quit my job (engineering) and go to grad school, i purposefully left the bay area because i didn’t want to try to live there on a grad student stipend. went to dallas and bought a small house in a great neighborhood for just over 80K.
So I Dugg your post Suz.
And while I was at it, I found this lhp post climbing the charts!
the way the co-op is set up, loohoo, the board has to approve of tenants (mainly a meet and greet) and the lease has to be for a minimum of one year. it can not be rented as short term or vacation rental. i’m 30 minutes up the hill from UCSC so its not real attractive for students.
*blushing* thanks newton
You’ll do great on the National Boards, alias.
If possible look into nursing school, it is only two years and the pay is good, also your skills will always be in demand. They can’t outsource nursing.
My 35 year old son just got his nursing license last July and he loves the work. Very demanding but very rewarding,
I love my patients and my co-workers, but dammit. I can’t LIVE on these wages. Our Head Pharm Tech has pretty much encouraged me to try the hospital thing out. I’ve very little love for the way that corporation treats us, for all that we give them some of the best numbers in the country on a consistent basis. So it’s not like i’m obligated to stay with them, if i get a much better offer for what i learned with the company. Considering i learned the job from the ground up! I came in knowing nothing about pharmacy–now i’m going in for the national credentials.
iirc, npb’s son just graduated from his nursing school program.
Amen, aliaswg. Study hard and good luck!
Nite nite everyone gotta get up and get the youngest new/old car to the shop early am so he can drive it back to Orange and school, he has one more year and then he can take care of us. HA HA HA.
good luck!
g’nite nahant
Sounds like you’re focused, Alias. You’ll end up with a job that allows you to be comfortable. We all deserve that!
nite nahant
Sweet dreams.
There’s no way i could do nursing. I get faint at the sight of my own blood, much less anyone else’s. I actually like pharmacy, which has a challenge all its own. The tech has to keep up as much as anything else, especially with the latest safeguards they’ve been throwing at us over the last 3 years. But it’s just as consistent a job as nursing. This can NOT be done entirely by machines. Doctors consistently screw up prescriptions and it takes human perception to catch that. We can use machines to count off drugs, but we also double count THAT if it’s a controlled drug. Two sets of eyes to decipher a particularly bad script’s handwriting is needed too.
The E-script thing is showing up more–but they can still screw that new innovation up as well. I’ve seen it more than once and have had to call the Dr’s office on it. Believe me, i doubt i’d be out of work with this job. It’s the company itself that i work for, not so much the job. They dictate my meager wages. Therefore my ‘loyalty’ to them is rather ambiguous.
Obama’s final commercial for Iowa.
Inspiring?
i think you are right, alias. pharm work will be just as needed as nurses, doctors, xray techs and other medical techs.
Edward Teller, are you still here? I recommended your Kos diary, but I did not like your poll. As an outsider, I was not provided with an opportunity to vote for “Alaskans are smart enough to figure out who their U.S. Senator should be.”
Today is his birthday and just signed his first contract joining the nursing staff at the hospital he trained in. Lots of Snoopy Dancing breaking out among proud friends & family. ;~)
Good luck in your endeavors. e-scripting is comming. At the VA they also use it but with a cross check of the drugs interaction with other scrips the patien is taking. Dr’s love it the mistakes are cut way down.
Again good luck and don’t worry about the corp you ARE JUST HIRED HELP AND COMPLETELY REPLACEABLE.
*tosses confetti for him!*
That’s very awesome!
great for him! and congratulations for you!
Cool, NPB!
Just watched it.
“…and I won’t be a perfect President…”
Peculiar line coming before a single vote in the entire election has been cast.
selise, are you enjoying your break from reporting all of the hearings? Or would you rather they were all back at work?
Yup, the pharmacist can’t do all the work all of the time. That’s where techs come in and the second set of eyes to do the initial check the pharmacist does the final check and the drug interaction/dosing issues.
But the techs do majority of greeting, information gathering, and a heck of a lot of the administration tasks in a single pharmacy. Much less all the basic pharmacology, dosing and conversion equations you’ve gotta keep either on a cheat sheet or in your head. If you don’t know how to organize and multitask on an extraordinary basis? You won’t last five minutes.
Part of why i love it. It’s not my ‘calling’ but it’ll keep a roof over my head until i can sidle back over to the music side of my life again. (besides, i’m still a streaming internet DJ. it’s not totally gone either!)
That’s what I thought too. And that he seemed nervous/uncomfortable.
What channel is Letterman on?
cbs
LOL! Just got back from the phone.
congrats, newspaperbrat and kid!
found out while I was gone a 4th orchestra wants to play this rag I wrote last year. I haven’t even shopped the piece yet. this has never happened to me before.
I have purposely avoided seeing his appearances – the general theme I’ve heard is that he “owns the room” when in front of a group, no competition.
But I’ve seen his debate performances (that’s what they seem like – performances), and he’s appears stilted, over-phrased, and more non-committal that the others.
This ad is the first I have watched, so I have nothing to compare it to. But I detest his campaign, so I have a clear bias.
Edwards/Dodd
nice things can happen to good people, et. you are due :)
He’ll be tickled to learn of your confetti tossing! I keep meaning to mention that I’m just across the Mty Bay from Suze’s cottage in the Redwoods so you southern CA pups who want to take the train up from the southland for our next Boulder Creek Firepup meetup & need a driver & a comfy couch let me know. The Salinas train station isn’t a major drive from the Monterey Peninsula. Just sayin the invitation is open & Suz has my contact inf.

Truly strange – maybe Obama was jacked up on caffeine or presidentitis.
And hearty congratulations right back attcha ET!
woo hoo!
Congrats! And interesting that we should see the name Durham twice in one day. Never have seen it before…eerie…
Sweet! Thanks.
i had a friend recommend i start drinking yerba matte tea (which i had never heard of until that email) and then someone here mentioned it in a comment that same night. spooky when karma speaks twice.
ET cues Twilight Zone theme…
ET,
I wish there were more pieces that featured the double bass. My older son played in the orchestra at school from 4th through 12 grade, and I could never get enough of hearing it.
Congrats ET! I love to see when other music lovers do so well.
ET – you seem comfortable near the flame, and kos place is better for having you diary there.
Yerba mate is excellent. I mix it strong and add honey in the winter. In the summer I make up a big pot and chill it. Serve it with lime and ice. I’m thinking of trying it with mango next summer.
Supposedly it has brain stimulating alkaloids even stronger than its high caffeine content. I use it when I’m working real hard on creative projects and I’m staying away from things like coffee or alcohol. You can get it fairly inexpensively at some big natural food stores or Latino stores specializing in South America.
Thanks, pups…
et, i’m thinking the natural foods store in town will have it. am going there tomorrow and it is on my grocery list.
Perfect!
Niters all you intrepid latelate dears – past time for this ole brat to get some sleep.
that dayam news ticker is pretty dayam depressing. anyone have any good news anywhere?

I think too much time and money are spent on these opening Presidential contest events. Done preaching to the choir.
i would prefer a national primary myself so i don’t feel like my vote doesn’t matter by the time it rolls around to ca’s vote.
Not new, but from CTuttle today:
Greenwald nails it again…
It’s hard to imagine a more serious scandal than this. As I noted the other day, it is a confirmed fact that Alberto Gonzales and David Addingtion — the top legal representatives of George Bush and Dick Cheney, respectively — participated in discussions as to whether those videotapes should be destroyed. The White House refuses to disclose what these top officials said in those meetings. Did they instruct that the videos should be destroyed or fail to oppose their destruction? The NYT previously quoted one “senior intelligence official with direct knowledge of the matter [who] said there had been ‘vigorous sentiment’ among some top White House officials to destroy the tapes.”
Thus, we have evidence that “top White House officials” vigorously argued that these videos should be destroyed. The number one aides to both the President and Vice President both participated in discussions as to whether they should be, almost certainly with the knowledge and at the direction of their bosses.
-snip-
Both legally and politically, it’s hard to imagine a more significant scandal than the President and Vice President deliberately obstructing the investigation of the 9/11 Commission by concealing and then destroying vital evidence which the Commission was seeking. Yet that’s exactly what the evidence at least suggests has occurred here.
What possible justification is there for the White House to refuse to say what the role of Addington, Gonzales, Bush and Cheney was in all of this? Having been ordered by Bush’s new Attorney General not to investigate, are the Senate and House Intelligence Committees (led by the meek Silvestre Reyes and the even meeker Jay Rockefeller) going to compel answers to these questions?
These guys keep Hugh busy, don’t they?
thanks loohoo.
Yes, ET. And you do Hugh’s work proud! You have to laminate that puppy! Your kids will appreciate it someday, cuz it will be in the history books for those studying this madness.
To laminate Hugh’s Scroll would use a half a barrel of oil, Loo Hoo. My uber Greenie kids would nail me.
I wonder what Dana Priest is up to now! teehee!
I would argue that we will all do much less useful things with half a barrel of oil quite soon.
But the Smithsonian, ET. Imagine if the Federalist papers had been laminated! JK
time for me to head out for the nite pups – g’nite all
From the WAPO:
Durham, who will lead the probe, is second-in-command at the U.S. attorney’s office in Connecticut but will serve as an acting U.S. attorney and report to Craig Morford, the acting deputy attorney general and a former career prosecutor. Mukasey described Durham as “a widely respected and experienced career prosecutor who has supervised a wide range of complex investigations in the past.”
What do we know about Craig Morford, and how long will he be “acting”?
Good night, Suzanne.
nite suzanne
Not good…
Evangelical Hope College, Newtonusr? Help us.
I love Gail Collins:
As the presidential candidates tell them every single day, Iowans deserve to be the nation’s kingmakers because they are exceptional citizens who take their responsibilities very, very seriously. So tonight, even though it’s very cold — even though it’s Hokies vs. Jayhawks in the Orange Bowl — the sturdy Iowa voters will pull on their parkas and go out to fulfill their historic destiny. Perhaps as many as 15 percent of them!
We’ll all be happy to know that Morford isn’t the only luminary to attend Hope.
Pete Hoekstra (yeah, Dickhead-MI) attended as well.
I’m out. Will look some more tomorrow, but by then, I assume Christy and LHP and PW will have it fleshed out.
Nite all.
Nite, Newt. I’ve gotta hit it too.
Where there have been torture tapes, there has been torture, which is a very serious crime under both U.S. and international laws. Will Durham be investing the crime of torture along the way, or are we only interested in the comparatively minor crime of obstruction?
The shame of west michigan, he is. I can’t believe they still elect him. I know one or two decent people in Hope College, but i’d never attend it myself. I’d rather have something with some amount of actual freedom to explore OTHER things. Which means a typical university or college. (as if i can afford it anyway.)
Sadly, i’m in no better shape. I’m stuck with Rubber Stamp Ehlers. I tried to vote him out last election, didn’t go anywhere. This side of the state is so safely rethug that we get regular visits from the Shrub and Darth. I don’t go anywhere near downtown on those days because of the damned motorcades. Bad enough i live near the airport on the way TO downtown. Traffic for miles comes to a halt!
Marcy, who is from Michigan, refers to Peter Hoeckstra as “Crazy Pete.”
