What is fundamentally important is their foundation.

Edwards was raised in a North Carolina mill town where his parents worked hard for a living. John was smart and worked hard on education (first in his family to go to college) and then as a trial lawyer he helped people in need. He succeeded over and over.

Hillary was raised in Illinois in the suburbs with Republican parents. Her father was a small business owner. She was smart and went to college in the East where she succeeded terrifically. Then she married Bill Clinton and became a corporate lawyer.

Barack Obama isn’t as well known to me. His father is from Africa (not certain what country) and is a Muslim. His parents split when he was young and his mother took him to Hawaii. He didn’t do much and by his own admission wasted several years in school where he smoked marijuana and took cocaine. Somehow he got the chance to go to Harvard and he suddenly became very successful and his native intelligence really took off. From there he moved to Chicago and began to work in earnest for people with problems. I don’t know how long that lasted, but he went into politics at the state level and then the U.S. Senate (he ran against Alan Keyes and won an easy race) and is now running for President. It’s hard to judge how successful he’s been at governing since he’s been in politics. The record is spotty.

I favor Edwards because he comes from the working class, favors unions as a result and is very smart while continuing to be a solid Progressive Democrat.

Good question. In our anecdotal evidence (friends and family,) it’s the fact that the R’s aren’t offering anyone these days besides crazed wingnuttia. They left “conservative” a long time ago, and the rearranging the deck chairs re: Huck and Mitt just isn’t cutting it. I’m also thinking there may be a financial component — we’re in our late 40’s, and medical bills are pressing down hard on all that aren’t in perfect health, for example.

There has been too much of a constant barrage of demonization of all things D by the likes of Limbaugh and Malkin and the shillocracy, as well as the sort of disinformation and dirty trick outright lie-a-thon politics of Rove, Reed, Norquist and Co. — and those divisions are hardened into concrete hatred of any and everything D that is going to take generations to undo.

Well, it’s not as if the feeling isn’t mutual at this point. Hard to overlook some of the lethal shit they’ve been pelting! OTOH, if some of them wants to help us put Habeas Corpus back in it’s rightful place in law, and restore the Constitution and Bill of Rights to their former positions of honor, it would go a long way to salving our burnt collective sense of decency.

As for fiscal conservatives, they’ll never forgive us for the National Healthcare plan that we’re about to demand.

What took him so long? I abandoned the man, it seems, eons ago, when it was pretty clear he burned his bridges with netroots.
