Eureka!
ECHO echo echo ech..
EPU’d from downstairs:
ralphbon, French, not Czech otherwise, snot on!
We’d hoped to join our friends who were watching the entire Lord of the Rings today (extended edition, twelve hours including potty breaks), but Ms. Redshift got a mild flu last night (missed our New Years Eve party.) She was feeling better enough that we went over for dinner and the last couple of hours, though.
Eureka!
And… Oh, Suz!
Well, I wuz thinking about Mexico, but now I’m thinking about hitting the sack. Maybe I’ll dream about mexico. To sleep perchance to dream.
Been cold in Texas for more than a week now. I’m ready for warm weather again.

Puntex sounds like something that should come with ointment.
Hi All LLNite — we are having a major snowstorm and loving it. I’m really not from here, but love the snow until at least February. Fire just dying down, and Mr.E is giving me the stink-eye to go to bed.
Looks like it’s coming down to second-choice votes in Iowa: http://www.politico.com/news/s…../7659.html
(hands on hips) it is a freezing 35 with clear skies so another night of it being cold enough to snow with no flippin snow! got down to 28.1 last nite.
Eureka Springs. Eternal. Like Hope. not like anyone from Hope.
First night of the year, got up and yes out of bed to say hi to the lateniters across the time zones. And now to bed.
Some of what’s on Betsy’s blog this evening.
Destroying the Bible in school
The post is about this incident, in which a kid in a high school English class decided to incorporate tearing pages out of a Bible into his class presentation, causing great distress for at least one religious student. He prefaced his shenanigan with the statement, “I’m going to do this because I can. I’m going to do something that your stupid, little minds aren’t going to be able to comprehend.”

DiFi has always been low, pun, folks are just now seeing her true colors (dollar bill green and rethug red)
Chris, that’s our weather now too.
I bet they cancel school here.
I’m so down right now on our Senators and Reps. I am from the state of Delaware, and just got back from visiting our daughter in Wilmington. This major city in a tiny state is dying. Senator Biden, what the hell?
Heh, Ya’ll can keep it, if I wanna see snow I merely have to drive up top of Mauna Kea… Close enough for me… *g*
Margot,
They never cancel work, just school. Have my snow shoes out for the morning.
Biden is on C-span1 as I type… ;-)
Work? What is this thing “work”?
And I’ve always liked him — but I’m shocked at the state of one of two cities in the state. It is shit now.
work’s for me. alas.
retired – if i was working, i’d have been fired by now for spending all my time here
Oh! Sorry Betsy — different buildings I mean. Kids get to stay home, and I’m sledding down the hill to an empty library.
Look at me, posting as if I’m on the West Coast. Must submit. Night, all.

We’re all in a world of sh*t, the Great Depression could pale in comparison… Especially if the Chinese call in their chits… It’s gonna be a bumpy road… 8-(
if I wasn’t self-employed I’d have the same problem
i was telling a friend yesterday that i was gonna need a new 5pt harness for my mod chair – that my bones are telling me it is going to be a very bumpy year
This is why I never get here until so late. I really don’t want to post at work, although honestly, we’ve never been told not to do anything other than use the internet in our off time (lunch). I peek at lunch, but sometimes I work late and that matters too.
And a heavy duty Roll Cage, Ma Cheri… *g*
Anybody know of a free clip-art source that would have a picture of people caucusing? I want to write a post at my place about how to caucus next month – ours is February 5.
5 pt? pretty small for such a font of wisdom… :~)
luckily, i got a new kevlar lined nomex modsuit for the holidays
Ya’ll have a caucus?
didn’t wanna give any of the guys a complex
Suzanne, is nomex anything like puntex?
You are so so right on but it doesn’t have to be if we have a progressive government and put in the right programs. We have the tools we need to use them correctly. There are plenty of really smart people that can make it happen. These would never;

Condoleezza Rice
Stephen Hadley
Andrew Card
Alberto Gonzales
Mary Matalin
Ari Fleischer
Susan Ralston

Greetings from L.A. Before I slide into the arms of Morpheus (Greek sleep entity, not Matrix guy), for those here who might be aware that our family works @ these times in a local homeless shelter/halfway house for street kids, today 22 walked in off the street looking for help, a bed, a dry out, or all 3. None were turned away, even though facility is full; a place to stay was found for all. Thank you, volunteers/staff of Covenant House:

That is wonderful the work you do and wish you best wishes for the New Year….
As a matter of fact…
Happy New Year to all the folks here at the lake and may we all have a success in 2008…
Got to go now just finished some tea and it’s sleepy time now…

Awesome…would be nice to have some taxpayer assistance which we lost for our little homelees shelter for 49 beds for a population of 4,ooo to 5,000 depending.
Nice to here good stuff…the scale of the crisis will grow the next five years. We need a national housing program that has funds let the idle construction industry build it. Housing for everyone.
That is an awesome act of benevolence… Thankfully, there’s still souls out there that are truly compassionate… *g*

My wish for 2008 — can I let any of this anger go? I dread the year ahead.
Levin (the Levin memo on torture) only needed 5 seconds and he was a…CIA?
Don’t let go of the anger —- turn it towards making a change for the country.
Learn to use the anger in a positive way as an energy source to drive your effort for peace and goodness it works.
Yah know I can hold my breath longer than that, oh yeah they are rebubs.
fighting back helps manage the anger well is what i have found. i love those action calls here, for calls to congresscritters, etc.
Last minute promises to end Iraq faster–Edwards includes forces futiley “training” Iraqi troops unlike HRC and Obama.
Edwards Calls for Quick Pullout of Troops Training Iraqi Forces
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — John Edwards says that if elected president he would withdraw the American troops who are training the Iraqi army and police as part of a broader plan to remove virtually all American forces within 10 months.
I couldn’t agree more, Channel that energy. Don’t let them do that to you.
One more year of pure Bush hell dictated by Addington and Cheney, packaged by Gillespie and Fielding, ignoried by your people in Congress who continue to do NOTHING.
Great youtube, ES. Thanks.
And goodnite, all.

I was looking up stuff about water torture on google, and I found a forum, like a message board, where a member had tried this on himself. He was absolutely panic-stricken and he was in control the whole time.
He said it was like a deep message that got printed on his brain “You. Are. Going. To. DIE. NOW.” and he just freaked. Said he’d rather cut off a finger than to do that again.

Kucinich Asks Supporters to Back Obama
from TalkLeft by Jeralyn
Dennis Kucinich today asked his caucus goers to support Barack Obama.
He said his request is only for Iowa supporters as he intends to win in New Hampshire.
Obama’s response:
He said he and Kucinich have fought for some of the same priorities, including ending the war in Iraq, reforming Washington and creating a better life for working families.
When Obama backs Kucinich’s positions on the war on drugs, the death penalty, mandatory minimums and the Patriot Act — even immigration– then it might mean something. As of tonight, it’s not a reason to switch to Obama vs. Edwards or Hillary.
Iowans Without a Vote: Those Serving in Iraq
I do understand that human nature and the fight or flight reflex does take over at some point. Then all bets are off. That lizard part of the brain just takes over! Traitor!
nite betsy
When I read this earlier, the first thing I thought was that Dennis is cutting them loose, all of them. I have a hard time imagining his supporters in the other 49 seeing this and sticking with him. They should despise Obama.
Per this report, the key will be who gets Biden’s delegates after the first round: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..79004.html

Ok,I lied. Got involved in the DKos candidate diary debate. Came back for a few puns and to console the hawaiians on their [football] loss.
But I insist on going to bed on the 2nd night of the new year with good thoughts of achievements and improvements.
List from talkingpointmemos.com of the scandalized. Begins with the well indicted, imprisoned-punished people. For copyright protection purposes, and to induce you to visit Talking points, I have left other categories behind.
I enjoy thinking about those who were naughty but not yet caught and who can’t count on a blanket pardon from Bush because to do so would admit a crime. and then their troubles begin.

Love to know where Samson and Goodling and espeically Taylor are doing their worrying. Are they too much soiled goods for any campaign.

Good post at DU by Nancy Greggs as usual she writes a good rant!
I like thinking of the predicament of the USA for DC in the kickstart period.
Does he want to go out a loyalist or as a lawyer with regard for the constitution by showing his willingness to serve subpeonas for contempt of congress.
Taylor, name of perhaps. Anyone, the one who got Samson into trouble for politicizing a career hire from Howard when he was USA in VA.
Anyway in the good news for the first nite of the new year, here is a story about how Giuliani has been screwed and even better, screwed up himself by foregoing Iowa.
http://www.boston.com/news/nat…..goes_solo/
leaves out much of the detail on the police details and the tawdriness of Mrs. G. but that’s my Boston paper, haunted by the ghosts of banned in Boston.
Take that back. Globe went full throttle through the courts on the sexual abuse in the Catholic Church case. Always wondered if there was a connection between their great good work and the Sox winning the world series. Altough in a certain sense. the Globe’s breaking of the clerical abuse case was the greater of the two miracles.
And when I get to talk about Sex and Sox in the same post I can call ita Soxsexfull comment and can go to bed.
For real, not pretend this time.
Nice list.
There were some good lists at Kos yesterday (3 or so) laying out Bush’s lies and law breaking similar to Hugh’s. I meant to mention it to him. I know he’d want to see them.
When I post, I’m never ever trying to detract from the positive, constructive efforts of anyone else whether they are commenting, calling someone, writing a letter, contributing or campaigning. I know many of them must seem dark and cynical. I have hope, but one of my chief frustrations is how contemptuous the whiz kids and operators in Congressional offices in the back rooms are of our intelligence.
The truth is, many of us can analyze the facades in Congress and the legal manuevering as well as they can, even if we aren’t as privy to the info as they are.
The closer attention I pay to KOS, the better the site gets. TPM and TPM Muckraker are must reads for me. All of Josh Marshall’s sites are valuable–he has about 5 of them now.
Sampson, Taylor, and Goodling, particularly Sara Taylor because she knew much better, will probably fade into the woodwork. They know much, but how to force them to say it is the problem.
Taylor has been in on a vast majority of the dirty deeds since 2000. It would be great to force her to talk, but how is the question.

Put The Rake Down and Back Away Slowly
Some lawyers call it perjury trap as the witness tries to cover their crime/crimes with a lie, I suppose a good trial lawyer like John Edwards knows a few other traps as well without waterboarding.
Edwards was a very skillful, extremely effective, excellent trial lawyer–and some of his cases were right out of the pages of Erin Brockovich/Grissom’s novels
Those skills would be an asset to him as President, and while Obama doesn’t have the trial experience, he has a deep grip on Constitutional law.
Not to sell her short, but I believe both of them are much sharper attorneys than HRC.
Of course, Dodd and Biden are attorneys too, and I admire them both for their work over the years and Dodd’s stance now on S. 2248, the Intell bill that will hit the road in a couple weeks.
Evening all – did I miss any updates from Jane in the four or so hours I’ve been away?
I just now noticed the bizarre juxtaposition of comments #98 and #99. It was purely a coincidence. I swear.
Nope she’s probably rushing around/catching up on rest for the big push the next two days–but if you’re into Iowa you might ponder that the Iowans who are not allowed to participate in the caucuses are located in Iraq as soldiers, wrongly, and I posted links to Edwards’ more detailed faster withdrawal plan he announced/refined today.
I also posted a link to a pretty complete list of Bush misdeeds above.
And because I’m obsessed with the USA firings, here’s H.E. “Bud” Cummins from last months Washington Monthly. Cummins was the Eastern Arkansas USA who was fired so that Rovian spawn Tim Griffin could have a job there.
Cummins has been silent, except for his reluctant House & Senate testimony, on the subject of the firings, and even then, he spared the DOJ the embarrassment of his insider knowledge. No more. In this piece, he gets out the very big stick and clouts the DOJ public affairs flack Brian Roehrkasse into another time zone. It’s beautiful.
Brian Roehrkasse, Please Leave the Building:
Why the DOJ’s spokesperson dishonors the department
Hi npb!
I don’t recall Miss Jane checking in tonight.
How’s your bay?
Your information is really interesting especially the story on Taylor’s departure and history getting Bush in office. For such a young person not to have hit political turbulence seems incredible. She must have realized she made some mistakes in supporting him as the compartmentalised dirt came out. Wonder what got to her. It is amazing that bushco got so many people to do his bidding. As I recall he had a “noble cause” from Rove that was imbued in college like the Brown shirts of Hitler. Nothing like powerful propaganda to glaze over logic.
She’s now 32 and making $137,000 per year. So, when she was hired nine years ago, she would have been 23. It appears that she did a lot of tedious data processing to microtarget individuals based on the buying habits rather than where they lived. Those are highly marketable skills in the private sector. She’ll command a much higher salary there.
Well..
The first day of 2008 was excellent for moi. I learned a lot from you all. I started my jogging regime with my buddy my almost 14 year old rot/shep. He has a dazzling smile and a grateful attitude. I am happy he can still manage to stay ahead of my pace.
I have a positive feeling about the coming year. You make of it the best you can. Be well prepared as much as possible. I think this group will help each other as well as humanity. There are a lot of people and other organizations that have done and will be doing much to that end. We are just grains of sand on the a little planet. I hope we can make it a better place. Have another year.
Hey newtonusr – warm, sunny & finally drying out throughout the Monterey peninsula & south coast. ;~) My burning question: Will Ralph Nader’s endorsement of John Edwards help get out votes for him in Iowa?
It’s chilly and wet here.
And as much as I like Edwards, I’m still more than a little peeved with Ralph, and wondering what Iowa has shown the Edwards campaign that makes them think that Nader is a plus.
Gotta go… fading fast.
nite npb!
reading Ian Welsh’s eloquent case for John Edwards over Hillary or Barak Obama:
http://agonist.org/ian_welsh/2…..ic_nominee
that about says it all for me ……
Much appreciated.
I’m fading fast as well. Niters dear firepups!
Indubitubly the best post of the year: If I may:
The Edwards Imperative: Because Compromising To Change Hasn’t Worked
Edwards should be Democratic nominee because he is the most progressive and electable of the top three candidate and the only one who understands that entrenched interests like the telecoms, banks, credit card issuers, health insurers and oil companies aren’t voluntarily going to make some sort of “bipartisan happy consensus” that costs them billions of dollars and a ton of power, whether doing so saves millions of lives, trillions of dollars and makes the country prosperous and safe or not.
Just is not happening.
And anyone who thinks it is (hello Mr. Obama) is both living in a fantasy land and certainly is suffering from amnesia, because nothing, nothing in the last 30 years, indicates that megacorporations are giving up any power, even a small amount, without a fight to the death.

There’s an alleged link to that article at #117, but it didn’t work for me. So it’s helpful that you posted it verbatim.
And, I agree with you that it is an excellent and important post that gets exactly to the crux of the race. Making nice and business as usual don’t cut it in a constitutional crisis.
“It’s time for a new approach, and amongst the three front runners in the Democratic field, that means Edwards. As with FDR, if his approach works, he will be both the most loved and most hated man in America, and some will wring their hands about how divisive that is. But if “unpleasantness” is what is needed to stop going to war illegally, to end the shredding of the Constitution and to end the destruction of the Middle Class, so be it. An unwillingness to really fight means that those who will, the Republicans, will walk all over those who won’t.
The time for the failed politics of compromise is over.”
I believe you are correct. Jefferson would indeed be proud of your position “Corporate aristocrat’s” perpetual assault on the constitution and attempts to “usurp” it, have been effective. Political affiliation no longer matters as manifest by the democratic leadership’s failure to hold this administration accountable, for self interested politcal reasons.. I believe all current politics viewed agaist the backdrop of America’s founders’ fears and concerns, carries the same weight as the bible……
Unfortunely, for America, America’s concern with the bible carries more weight than the words of our brilliant and gifted founders……
Today more so than ever,as was back then, America’s revoution was a reaction to an unjust econmic arrangement. The English empire “mercantiled” the world from India , to the New World using war as the instrument of coersion. The colonist of America revolted against the King of England and his corporate cohorts in colonial crime. Today corportions control every aspect of American’s live’s, from the gaspump to the deathbed. When government conspires with corporations you have, Kings of England and corporate cohorts in colonial crime! This is what our constitution was designed to avoid America, not enable…….
Is he still going to put troops over the horizon (in Kuwait) to act as a response force if there’s a civil war or to attack terrorists? And what about that two Brigade (@4000 troops and support staff) that are going to be there to protect the Green Zone and reconstruction projects? Has he changed that?
