Agreed. I actually thought that the whole point of the post was to say it was false. I found out about Jane’s post from an Obama supporter who linked to this site to condemn the blogosphere for attacking Obama. I don’t think he even realized that it does say the rumor was true; perhaps they’ll try and spin it.

Trippi may have not been a sweetheart about it but the point is that Obama did say it. That’s what matters. I don’t understand what’s so “spin” about passing on what turns out to be true.

He got lucky, this one happened to be true, and Barack Obama trashing Al Gore will be the story.

I’m sorry, but Trippi is no Axelrod–a motherfucking asshole!–and I’m not electing a consultant but a president. This is all part of politics, especially when you’re in a dogfight against the corporate press and the juggernaut that is the Obama campaign in a primary when the stakes could not be any higher for our country! Obama committed a far worse offense than Trippi–by far.

Besides, the whole problem with the campaigns of Gore and Kerry is that they refused to be truly partisan and fight back against the right (Also worth mentioning: the corporate press being co-opted by the right and used to relentlessly slander any Democrat with a chance). Gore chose to distance himself from Clinton and selected goddamn Lieberman as a VP while Kerry just sat back and let the Swift Boaters smear him (in addition to other mistakes, like voting for the war).

C’mon Edwards!

If I had to defend Obama’s reported statement, I’d argue that in the campaigns of 2000 and 2004 the Democratic Party as a whole did not robustly defend against Republican attacks and mischaracterizations. I’d say that the deficiency in each election was not in the Democratic candidate, and that the Obama comment was not aimed at either of them.

You are heaven-sent! I have been steaming for hours about the way Kos reported this story. He used the exact Trippi quote. Kos has been ceaseless in his hate and vitriol against most of the Dems these past few months. I deleted DailyKos from my “favorites.”

He also spearheaded ethics reform in the Senate taking on McCain in Feb. 2006 and urging him to support the Democratic caucus’s Honest Leadership Act – a stronger alternative to pending legislation advocated by McCain. On a personal level after graduating from Harvard Law School, he choose to be a civil rights lawyer rather than a member of a prestigious law firm – keeping his actions in line with his principles.

A friend of mine worked with Trippi on Mondale’s campaign and he is a d*&khead but, as my friend says “I’d want him on my side any day.”

Sounds good to me.

When the discussion with Jane happened it sounds like your typical cognitive dissonance — TradMed discussion meets blog discussion and they’re distinctly different.

Survive Jane. Please survive. Don’t become a victim of media dissonance.

This is a strange post. You spend the first 90% of it painting a picture that a smear of two prominent Democrats by Barack Obama is possibly a double-reverse smear perpetrated by the Clinton campaign and being spread by a Clinton campaign operative. It’s only down at the bottom of the post that we learn that the smear is pure and authentically Barack Obama. Real, bottom of the barrel, dirt from the Obama. But even then the implied problem is that Clinton’s man didn’t tell you the name of the person that saw and heard Barack Obama say the smear. Nice.

It’s the standard Democratic circular firing squad.

Just calling someone on their statements can’t be seen as nasty. If you’re all that sensitive to such debate, then ya oughta take a powder and sit it out.

Politics can be high-minded or combative or down and dirty. I think this year the Dems have kept the level of discussion pretty clean and honest. From my perspective it’s been a pretty good primary campaign debate.
