For weeks, the media has been trying to inflame a good fight between the Democratic candidates, and the best they could muster was the Clintons hinting Obama was a roll of the dice (well, isn't he?), Obama implying Republicans might oppose Edwards and Clinton (uh, yeah, so . . .) and Edwards accusing Clinton of being willing to work within a corrupt political system (and the alternative is?). This is pretty tame stuff. It seems my concerns about an excessively negative campaign were misplaced. I should have been watching the Christianists:
From Meet the Press:
MR. RUSSERT: You're suggesting that Mitt Romney's not running an honorable campaign.
GOV. HUCKABEE: I've been very clear about it. Mitt Romney is running a very desperate and, frankly, a dishonest campaign. He's attacked me, and, and yesterday--or Friday, I guess it was, he launched then just a broadside attack against Senator McCain. Now, Senator McCain and I are rivals for the presidency, but I've said on many occasions, I'll say it again here today, Senator McCain is an honorable man, and I believe he's an honest man. I believe he's a man of conviction. And I felt like that, when Mitt Romney went after the integrity of John McCain, he stepped across a line. John McCain's a hero in this country. He's a hero to me.
And I just felt like that when Mitt Romney gets on your show and says that he had the NRA endorsement when he didn't; when he comes on and says he's pro-life and yet he signed a bill that gives a $50 co-pay for an elective abortion in his state's health care plan; when he claims that he's really for the Second Amendment, but he--on this show he talked about how he supported limitations and restrictions on lawful, law-abiding citizens having gun ownership rights, those are not the marks of a person who's pro-life and pro-Second Amendment. And then the things where he's made up these visions that he's had of marching with Martin Luther King and his dad marching with him. You know, Tim, what I've said, and I've been pretty blunt about it, if you aren't being honest in obtaining a job, can we trust you to be honest if you get the job?
John McCain appears to support this view:
DES MOINES, Iowa - Mike Huckabee says John McCain is a hero. McCain says Huckabee is a good man. And they both seem to agree on this: Mitt Romney is neither.
The Republican rivals joined Sunday to criticize Romney — McCain in New Hampshire called him a waffler and Huckabee in Iowa questioned whether he can be trusted with the presidency, a sign of Romney's strength in both states.
[snip]
Airing ads that suggest Romney is a phony, McCain said that's not a word he'd used, but "I think he's a person who's changed his positions on many issues."
The AP article then contributes to the fight by repeating, as though facts, most of Romney's negative spin on Huckabee's terms as governor.
The Beltway worries that Democrats may be too partisan, a notion that prompts this great Digby rebuttal. Meanwhile, Ron Paul puts all the Democrats to shame by going after Fox News for arbitrarily removing Paul from the next candidates forum:
“They are scared of me and don’t want my message to get out, but it will,” Paul said in an interview at a diner here. “They are propagandists for this war and I challenge them on the notion that they are conservative.”
Why can't the Democrats say that? Compared to the Republican trench warfare, the Democrats are having a tea party. Cake, anyone?

Zed?
Yee hah! A zed! I, for one, am enjoying the hair-pulling match the Repubs have engaged in. It would be even more fun if they wind up with no clear winner in the primaries and have to have an open convention, replete with floor fights. Pass the popcorn…
The entire rethug field is a bunch of losers. I am so enjoying the fact that there’s literally no one that the wing nuts can happily rally around.
Karma is a bitch, isn’t it?
Just wait till the dust settles and they go after the cowardly, troop hating, gay loving, commie, anti-life democrat
You forgot anti-gun in there…
Damn! I’m slipping.
Morning pups, and Happy New Year to you all. As to the rethugs, it couldn’t happen to a nicer party. They will tear each other apart before Spring is out. None of them will lose gracefully, which means they will all lose disgracefully. The MSM is tied into knots on this one. McCain is their current saviour, but Giuliani will shake out his skeletons before long. That party lives on hate, and there’s plenty of it to spread around.
Caw, caw! Good morning, Scarecrow.
Good morning Scarecrow. Only 4 days till the big caucus and no more phonecalls, excessive advertising, and polling for awhile at least.
OT, another story in McClatchy about our Veteran’s Healthcare.

If, as seems likely, the goopoers get behind and “independent” candidate such bloomers in NY the that will be a problem for the Dems unless the D candidate is Edwards as then it will be a corporate vs anti-corporate battle. Money vs morals.
Oops. Morning Scarecrow and a peaceful new year to all
It’s music to my ears, but I think Raven is right @4 with additional epithets involving taxes and philo-islamo-facism.
and now the fun begins. 11 months and what a ride. Hey, it appears that the cable garbage is lining up and picking their candidates. Just disgustedly walked away from scarbcrap- what a disgrace. Well, Vitamin Time! Lots of coffee! Hang on and enjoy!
Oh, and a happy and healthy NY to all.
Morning all. Wish you guys were here — I’m making blueberry-banana muffins. Great piece, Scarecrow. :)
Good Morning Scarecrow and Happy New Year!
may this one bring us peace.
Wonder if Jane got to Iowa OK?
the entertainment/media media tries to invent stupid “fights” in order to distract us from the real fights over values, policy and culture that we should be having.
the only real candidate for the republicans is john mccain, and he’s their only shot
I am quite afraid of a mccain candidacy, I am not afraid of huck, romney or the ghoul
oh, I have a new platform for the president, one to add to the rest;
“no foriegn ownership of our media”, I don’t care if he’s been nationalized, I am PISSED a froreigner gets to buy our news papagers, radio and TEEvee
Homemade muffins & a good cuppa joe would be heaven this a.m. Thanx for the lovely mental snapshot of FDL folks sitting down to enjoy them together, Christy.
Good morning from Sacramento. Half way home to L.A. from skiing in Bend OR, a serene break from the latest national & international news.
I’ll be leaving the hotel soon to get a jump on any traffic on the I-5, but took time to kick in a bit of the folding for the FDL Iowa caucasus coverage. $50 coming your way via PayPal.
Hamsher & Merritt- a great coverage combo. Go Team!
I guess turning the other formerly big fat cheek really isn’t in the Hucksterbee, used religion salesman’s makeup.
I agree McCain is the scariest gooper candidate because some Americans are idiots.
Cohen and Nunn on CNN yesterday saying they were about that dialog over the next six + months, about the issues, not about endorsing a candidate. Coy? The CW pushing that the Oklahoma meeting’s a stunt for the upcoming Bloomie campaign. Clever?
There can be no doubt that the outcry for change is coming from every quarter. Not everybody’s coming to the conversation with clean hands. We must be vigilant and persistent in providing both the sunshine and the disinfectant…and the snark.
Thanks for all the hard work and leadership Jane and Christy and Pach and Siun and Scarecrow and the whole FDL team puts in for all of us, day in and day out. Gladiators for democracy.
Just finished sprinkled frozen blueberries on my banana-bread flavor oatmeal packet this a.m. — to your good health, Christy!
I don’t think it’s a matter of being afraid. I actually hoped Republicans would nominate that dumb actor, Ronald Reagan. Living in Texas, I hoped George W. Bush would be the Republican candidate. I don’t know how much it would take for a majority of voters to gain a new injection of terrerist fear, or passion over some wedge issue.
she checked in last night, said it’s cold
Aw, looks like Huck wants to be McCain’s cabana boy…
Cohen and Nunn also had an editorial in yesterday’s Boston Globe. Combine that with Broderella’s “third way bi-partisan” story in yesterday’s WaPo0, you can see where the VSP are going.
After all, it’s obviously the fault of the Ds that today’s Washington is not the same as the one they see looking backwards in their rose-colored bi-focals.
Good morning, everyone. The NYT has a devastating editorial, today, so I put up another post.
Happy New Year - its just turned to past midnight here in Aus.
Us news is so boring bc none of the meaty issues are being pursued but here’s to hoping Obama doesn’t get a look in just for the sake of the world - he’s dangerous for the rest of us.
How is Obama dangerous to Australia?
He is very very right wing and that means US policies around the world will be destabilising like it has been forever. For Australia that means tagging along like it always has. Did nobody tell you we in Aus do not have any independent foreign policy?
I worked my butts out to get Howard out but I do not like Rudd and I’ve gone back to manning barricades against all the soft shoe shuffle. I do like Julia Gillard, the Deputy PM. Her hands, however, are very tied.
Oh me, what would I give for Keating and the true believers - everything!
VSP — is that Very Special People?
Yes - or Very Serious People. Either one works.
I keep popping in where I can, with slightly off topic comments, because there there’s a real void in discussions about C-span.
Anyone from the Left really interested in politics notices a clear and divisive lack of ‘fair and balanced’ coverage. But C-span is just as contemptible as Fox -if you pay attention.
(I notice only because the drone of c-1 and c-2 is great background for this pre-law student.)
As an Obama supporter I am admittedly more sensitive to his getting an equal amount of air time. But C-span has now been pushing Edwards and Clinton so much so that that not even callers in support of Obama are getting through. I know because I tried. Not one Obama caller got through on several of the past call-in programs. I’m going to start a nagging demand to Conyers that this be the subject of a Congressional hearing. It should have been long ago. But we’re talking about interfering in an election now. What follows is just one example of how they use the same tactics of ‘equal treatment’ as Fox. Similar bits aired over and over becomes as deadly as brain washing -
Snippets of c-span advertising it’s non-stop coverage:
Camera & reporter #1 speaking in a monotone “..following Obama into a grocery store where he bought cookies for his staff for $12.00 ..and paid cash -just trying to act like he’s a normal person”. end of tape
Reporter #2 ..talking enthusiastically in background while clips of moving bits of Edward stump speech clips and sad stories and positive supporter comments and applause and activity go on twice as long as the Obama clip.
Brian Lamb is the biggest little known Bush crony of them all. One of his crowning achievements was to bring on Michelle Malkin with another Democratic bashing book not on Book TV, but on Washington Journal -on Memorial Day.
