In the airport on my way to Des Moines, where Jeralyn Merritt and I will be bringing you the latest dish from the Iowa caucuses. In what feels like a replay of last January’s Libby trial, David Shuster is on my plane. (Coincidence? I think not.)
Although we still maintain our policy of no endorsement, John Edwards is having a contest — the campaign wants you to submit a 30 second ad saying why you support John Edwards. The judges will be Elizabeth Edwards, John Edwards for President campaign manager Congressman David Bonior, Elizabeth Edwards’ brother and NYU Tisch Film School professor Jay Anania, actor and activist James Denton (Desperate Housewives), Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Joe Wineke, and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, and me & Christy. You can submit your entries here.
The deadline for submissions is January 16. And I can’t speak for any of the other judges, but Christy is easily swayed by the sight of really nice shoes.
Anyway, we’ve got press credentials and will be at the Polk Convention Center on the night of January 3rd when real-time numbers will be tallied. If you’d like to contribute to our Iowa trip fund, you can do it here. Your support, as always, is greatly appreciated — we couldn’t do it without you.

About Firedoglake
Iowa!
Got your longjohns?
Your link to edwards site is wrong. You have the first part pointing to your site.
Iowa here we almost are. You betcha!
Jane and Jeralyn – AbFab!!
Right, Jane, Christy’s eagle-eye focus goes off-track when a nice pair of shoes is in sight. heh
I’ve fixed it, I think. But here you go just in case. As Jane’s on her plane shortly, if not already, then I thought I’d grab that edit for her.
Have a great trip. I threw in a few sheckels.
Well, I can spot a sale on Manolo’s from three blocks away. (Not that I ever buy them or anything…SIGH)
In this house we are excited as Iowa approaches.
I have to say I flirted with Payless but my heart belongs to Cole Hahn.
What kind of shoes does Elizabeth Edwards wear? I don’t suppoe they’re fancy enough for you Christy!
eCHAN — Honey, she could be barefoot (like me at the moment) and I’d love her anyway. She’s a hoot and a half…if you haven’t read her autobiography, you really should everyone, but it’s a tearjerker, so be forewarned to have tissues on hand.
At about what time will the results in Iowa be known? Does anyone have a clue? If it’s late at night lahoma and i might stay up. We are usually early birds to bed, but this we think would be worth waiting for.
I found Firedoglake during the Libby trial, and was so impressed. I know you will be the ones to make sense of Iowa.
Please tell her that we don’t need any Rs in John’s cabinet. There are plenty of talented Ds to choose from. Also, on the D side, I’d rejectal most every A team player (I suppose that’s what the MSM would call them). In the interest of getting outta the rut.
And, to be honest, Jane’s only teasing me about the shoe thing because I hate having to ever wear them. *g* I was the constantly barefoot person at the FDL Libby living quarters…even on the freezing-ass cold days.
High Heel Sneakers (youtube)
I’d love to meet her. She is so clear when she speaks.
Edwards in a heartbeat, for president. We like Dodd too.
I only wear shoes when I go to town, chop wood, or when the temps drop below 25 degrees. Full disclosure.. I have at least 150 pair to choose from which is probably half the reason I avoid the decision making process as much as possible..)
Excellent! Enjoy Iowa. Can’t wait for the coverage.
Crocs for Christy.
Have we co-opted the Unity Party yet?
Well my submission ought to be a shoo-in then.
Don’t forget to listen to the corn grow!
Er…whoops, can’t do that right now in the middle of Winter!
Maybe in the GE with JRE leading the fight against the miserable rats of the ‘conservative’ Reich.
Lahoma tells me she is starting to get butterflies in her tummy about Iowa. Now that she’s told me that, I’m getting them too. Must be “sympathetic butterflies”. That has always happened to both of us. ;0)
You & me both.
After Jane Brody wrote her column in the NYT about tetnus (summer 03 or 04?) I immediately got my innoculation updated. I walk around barefoot outdoors at my country house all the time (well not in the winter). Old farm impliments & other garbage is constantly making its way to the surface. I have’t cut my foot yet, but why take chances. (I did have to tell my neighbors to have their large dor poop on their property as I did have a barefoot encounter.)
The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys live from 1972.
When Imelda Marcus’ shoe collection was exposed for all to see, I have to say part of me admired the concept. Now this in no way shape or form implies that I approve of the corruption that allowed her to aquire them, it was just thought of having 3,000 pair of shoes to chose from.
Go Edwards. I’m pulling for him to blow past Obama and Hillary.
Please tell me Iowa’s caucus result reporting mechanism is tamperproof.
I’m in for $50 toward Jane’s Iowa adventure & live blogging and hope one or more fellow firepups can match it – easy as pie via PayPal.
What no Joe LeiberToad!
No Colin ‘What me lie…My Lai’ Powell!
Dang! Broderella will be miffed!
But hey! Think of the long martini-soused lunches Brooks and ‘Bloody Billy’ can have while they write columns telling the Sulzbergers what miserable un-American people they are!
Wouldnt it be wonderful to have a hero….a fighter
Go John!
btw, folks, if there are particular issues or questions that you would like to know more about from the candidates, you can leave them in this thread or in later threads of Jane’s and I’m sure she’ll do her best to ask some of them. It can be tough to get a word in edgewise, but Jane’s really good at sneaking in a question in a crowd. *g*
Edwards, Edwards, EDWARDS!!! [crosses fingers, toes, arms, legs and eyes]
fantastico! Looking forward to the coverage…
seconding the question upthread, does anyone know when the final tally will happen in Iowa?
I’ve heard they are anticipating a “big” turnout of 175,000 vs 125,000 in 2004 (but I also read somewhere else that 216,000 turned out in 2004, so not sure which figure is correct…
I also read that the Dem caucuses don’t actually release the real numbers of who voted for whom… just the percentages.
Do exit polls provide reliable data for predicting who will win?
Thanks if anyone knows the answers to these questions!
(formerly cc in nm… the new setup wouldn’t let me have blanks for some reason…, altho I see others managed to keep them).
Mine’s at 15. I made it as a statement, but it can easily be turned into a Q.
We kinda wonder how Elizabeth Edward’s health battle is going? Does anyone know?
I agree – Edwards ! I want someone who is really decent. That’s very important to me because I feel as if I am covered in slime from the last 7 years. I would just like to feel good about the person in the WH and know that he/she is honorable and cares about my country.
LOVE EDWARDS lovvvvvvvvve ABFAB…….YEA Jane,Christy,Jeralyn…and Dave S.
woooo hooo
She gave a detailed explanation on C-span today. Says shes doing well. Takes pills and goes once a month for treatment.
She loves the campaign and the people.
Elizabeth is the real thing and so is John
A great reason for supporting John Edwards: He is not George Bush.
Do you intend to shoot any video?
When asked that on C-SPAN today, she says she’s feeling great and that she considers sleep to be overrated. She takes a pill every day and goes to the hospital every other week for a 1/2 hour nonpainful treatment. That’s what she said. I, of course, can’t vouch for its veracity. But her answer came across confident & upbeat. Oh yes, she also related that when the doctor was advising about side effects, she told him that she was much more worried about the side effect of not taking the drugs-death. Yes, she actually mentioned the word. Good for her.
God bless em both!
and yes im another shooooooofreakazoid
Woo-Hoo, live blogging from Iowa! Go Edwards!
Heard on MSM this morning that Youtube is giving cameras to media people so they can upload pronto the caucus activities… grab ‘em Jane and Jeralyn!
I am really excited about Edwards and hopeful that Iowans can get past the corporate media anointments of only Hillary and Obama…
Hope returned to me just today… as a huge Dean supporter/activist in 2004 (first time in politics), then to see it all lost, I’ve been watching from the sidelines til today… decided to get active in Edwards’ campaign.
God I hope he wins, the other two probably won’t make it in the general… people must be able to see that if they look at the long view.
i adore her equally as much as her wonderful hubby
Not me. Nor clothes. I’m really aggravated when something wears out, because I liked it, hate shopping, and feel put upon to have to replace it.
Dinner’s eaten (except for the brownies I made from mix, which I’ll save for later munchies, even though the house smells like chocolate), so back to finish It Can’t Happen Here.
All I know if what I observed when she was on CSPAN earlier today and I must say she looked good and just as articulate and charming as always. They youngest two kiddies are on the road with them in Iowa and hope and trust she has some helpers with the lively little rascals and feel certain she has more than she needs in family centered Iowa. OTOH John Edwards seems to have endless energy and is going for it with gusto from what I’ve seen today.
CSPan is re-running Edwards at a campagin stop earlier today as I post this comment…great turnout and enthusiasm.
Here’s one to ask any of the candidates
Since Chris Dodd has said the first thing he will do as President is restore the Constitution, would you make that same pledge? And if not, why not?
When in Des Moines a good place to eat and rub elbows with Dem players is the Centro Restaurant.
Gigglingville’ restaurant in Boone, Iowa via CSPAN – Elizabeth Edwards repeat interview on now from earlier today.
Americans seem to thirst for change. Edwards appears to hear that plea.
EDWARDS-EDWARDS-EDWARDS…You go, Jane, keep all of us informed as always EDWARDS-EDWARDS-EDWARDS
Edwards is by far my fave too.
That’s a cute picture of Jane and Jeralyn!
At the Giggling Goat restaurant, a precinct capt. was just telling Edwards that many of the non-viables were leaning towards him… 8-)
restore the Constitution-Edwards
rewrite the Constitution-Clintonrestore
We are looking at Mrs. Edwards now in CSPAN. Thank for the heads up.
Ask him if he plans to nail any of those repugs for war crimes.
HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN…channeling FDR for John
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..&NR=1
Thanks. ;0)
Thankyou. ;0)
Elizabeth Edwards just mentioned she and John have work to do in Oklahoma. Lahoma (and me) are elated.
I want to go to Iowa just to go to a restaurant called the Giggling Goat.
Me too! LOL!
David Rockefeller is closing in on his decision will be immediately be relayed to David Shuster.
Very, very good to hear that EE is doing well.
She must be one tough person.
One of my fellow bloggers is in FL somewhere now and she, a veteran progressive campaign worker for decades, was totally impressed with both the Edwards.
We are lucky to have them and their personal skills on the scene to fight for those who need someone to fight for them.
Edwards/Edwards 08!
Heck, I’d take her over Dodd even.
I just got off the phone with an Obama staffer who called the house wanting to know if I was still on the fence.
I said that I was quite dissapointed that Sen. Obama said he’d consider appointing Der Arnold Gropernator to his cabinet.
-GSD
150?! You are my sole mate!
We believe Mr. Edwards is a friend of teachers, labor, the middle class, the poor and those who are having trouble affording health care.
good for you GregB
i’m still for dodd tho his chances are slim but i suppose edwards will be my choice over the rest of the field….
Considering we a birthday twins.. this doesn’t surprise me at all. Sure beats being arch rivals, no? *g*
Hooray for YOU! I so hope and pray the Edwards take the Iowa caucus and get off and running with the electoral wind to their back all the way through the general election.
It ain’t much but hey!
If you eat meat go to a maid-rite.

OMG — the Kinks are planning a reunion tour next year…
With the original line up none-the-less!
Who’ll be the next in line?
Absolutely! I would hate to be a plantar fascist.
The last time I saw them was in Champaign and Johnny Cougar opened, remember him?
Here’s a Q for Edwards. Ask if he needs any knitters to do their jobs at the trials of the W regime.
Kinks Story
Ron Paul will restore the Constitution — and repeal the Patriot Act.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
I sure do. I saw them in 1978 (The Kinks), one of the best times I ever had at show.
Do you know when the tour starts and any west coast venues? Woo Hoo my son will be thrilled.
I remember having to explain ‘Lola’ to my mom. Painful.
But we know who the Cougarachi is, right?
and take a woman’s right to an abortion.
I saw that tour here in Indy…
Oh, ouch! Perhaps there are some things that just shouldn’t be explained to parents?!
We need heroes, Celluloid and otherwise
Yes I do, he’s one person I never saw but always wanted to. And you saw him in his home state if I remember correctly.
Work to do in Oklahoma by the Edwardses? This wouldn’t have anything to do with the “Unity Party” meeting on Jan 7?
Close, he’s from Indiana.
It’s going to take a huge effort and a great deal of time to make a dent in repairing the damage that George W. Bush has done to this country and the world. It’s felt that President John Edwards may just be a good man to start the repairs.
No, Mellencamp is from Seymour Indiana. I used to play hoop with a guy that was his little league catcher.
For some reason, The Kinks always *used to* include Indy in their tours (I’ve seen ‘em 3 or 4 times). Hope they do it this time too.
btw – Johnny *Cougar* was insufferable – he mellowed out eventually obviously.
And there’s a great photo of him in CBGB & OMFUG a great collection of black and white photos from Hilly Kristal’s collection. I was surprised to see him in there. It’s a great book btw.
Thanks much for doing this. It will be a treat to here your impressions from Iowa.
She wasn’t specific but my take was she was talking about winning the primary here in OK.
I saw Johnny Winter and ELP at Wabash College in about 72.
Too many damn Oklahomans up there.
nice tip, thx

that sounds thorougly fierce.
Dems could take a lesson from Kenya:
Odinga rejects Kenya poll result
from BBC World
The opposition candidate in Kenya’s presidential election, Raila Odinga, rejects the victory of President Kibaki.
You’re welcome. It’s a great collection of photos.
If truth be told I’m not really sure about what the ‘Unity Party’ stands for. Can anyone clue me in?
The kinks web site calls it a rumor
http://kinks.it.rit.edu/news-rumors.php
Yes. And there is a movement afoot here to take over the Lone Star State. ;0)
Billionaires unite with millionaires.
im crying now
AMERICA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
For the most part, the “Unity Party” appears to be a bunch of old men, bordering on senile, who have extremely faulty memories of what life used to be in Washington and seem to blame Democrats that the world today is not as they remember it.
thanks! Have always loved Simon & Garfunkel!
I prefer to think of them marching into Bloomie’s ego-fest and saying you want some of the bandwagon? Well, then, justify yourselves.
Here’s where I found it: Daily Mail.
Hello! What did I miss?
Why on earth would they want to do that, wouldn’t it be better if they became a Republic again…? ;-)
Christy likes shoes. Lots of people like The Kinks.
im sobbing, trully…weve all come to look for America
For TexBetsy:

I heard a rumor people were talking about Ray Davies
It’s funny, their site says “You decide”!

wow i guess i still love Merka
Here you go
Thanks kiddo.
That just takes the cake.
We all gather at the river and sing “kubaya”. I put my take up over at my digs what “unity” means to Republicans. My conclusion:
The only way one can compromise and reach unity with such people is to become one of them.
You will be assimilated…resistance is futile. Complete and total capitulation is the only compromise recognized by the modern Republican party.
Comity?
Welcome to The United Fiefdoms Of America Incorporated.
Glad to hear that may the Kinks may be reuniting. “Some Mother’s Son” might be too relevant to be performed on tour here in the States though.
I suspect they’d never make it as “major record label” band if they were starting out now.
Cool, I posted it earlier. I’m so old that’s the Kinks I remember on 9th Street West in LA! BTW there’s Kink’s music in The Darjeeling Limited.
anyone want to look back with me?

im afraid to click it
GOP 11th commandment watch.
A new McCain ad calls Romney “a phony”.
It’s getting ugly out there.

Ah, sorry, didn’t see it.
I’m pretty close to you in age; their music seems like part of the soundtrack to my teen years, listening on my transistor radio…
You clearly can see she was shot, the Pakistani Zapruder but not bloody.
Let’s have a fund raiser for Jane and stuff. I had a good year and just tossed a c-note in the tip jar. Further, I will match any and all contributions from individuals for any amount in the next 30 minutes up to $20 each.
Seems mama needs a new pair of shoes.
Somebody let me know how much I owe.
If we’re going to talk Ray Davies, can’t not mention Chrissie Hynde
2000 Miles is of the season
im really fukked up over this, havent been able to work since it happened
Yea, it’s funny, I was never all ga-ga over Lola. Dedicated Follower of Fashion, You Really Got Me, Sunny Afternoon, and the all time best. . .
“He adores the girl and he’s tying to get at her
but his mother knows the best about the matrimonial state”!
I just want to know if Jane is playing the role of Patsy or Edina in Iowa? *g*
Ollfield man @ 140
I’m in for $50.
FDL is the best sanity these days, I mean really!
So,FDL remains agnostic on the primaries. Was the readership polled on this? I was polled once and it hurt like hell.
I don’t know. I mean SHE knew it was coming. I a saddened but not in any way surprised.
Pole axed maybe.
Then you weren’t doing it right.. in a left way.

the brutality of it
im sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sick of violence
I think that was the May Day march right after Dewey Canyon III.
$50 here

Thank you
To add to the sadness of her death is the appointing of her 19 year old son to head the party. Even sadder to hear a dynastically succeded young man, in deep grief no doubt, praising democracy……
-G
man, been spending quite a while writing my piece for mr edwards, it has my signature style, (toned down a bit) and I’m gonna post it at the lake for editing before I submit
I love this place
Umh, I already gave $50 at beginning of thread.
C’mon people. I’m in a sugardaddy daddy warbux sorta mood. We gotta have our reps in Iowa stylin’ and profilin’. I heard that chirpy little tart Katie Couric say on the teevee today us bloggers were pajama wearin’ old fat guys sittin at our laptops. I nearly knocked my can of mello yello into my bag of cheetos when I heard that.
no, but I’ll look for it thanks! :)
Not May Day, April 24.
This peaceful anti-war protest organized by VVAW took its name from two short military invasions of Laos by US and South Vietnamese forces. Dubbed “Operation Dewey Canyon III,” it took place in Washington, D.C, April 19 through April 23, 1971. It was referred to by the participants as “a limited incursion into the country of Congress.” The level of media publicity and Vietnam veteran participation at the Dewey Canyon week of protest events far exceeded the Winter Soldier Investigation and any previous VVAW protest event.[17][18]
Good choices!! There was a sense then of the innate good of people in those days!
your quite welcome
i think that is why im sad

Ha, Amazon has the DVD for one cent plus shipping!
There are a lot of diehard Pretenders boosters out there who’ll warm to this unplugged hits set much faster than Last of the Independents. Hynde’s singing has never been finer, and it was a brilliant stroke to incorporate a string quartet into the acoustic soundscape. Everything here is first-rate (notably the little-known “I Hurt You” and “Criminal”), but it’s the ultra-fresh versions of “Brass in Pocket,” “Private Life,” and “2000 Miles” that will bring a lump to the throat of thirtysomething fans. -
America has become quite dissipated and jaded since then.
Empires aren’t fun or spiritually hearty places.
-G
babs came out for HRC,but Judy would have loved JE imo..lol
thanks!!!
Before I click it, Richie Havens?
Nice product placement, Dood, I’m sure you’ll be reimbursed… ;-)
HA!
What a very pleasant surprise on a cold December night. I will certainly be following your coverage of this oh so important first caucass. Looking forward to your insite.
Oh yeah, before I go…. John Edwards is the real deal folks. This guy is what our country, our constitution & we the people need in the executive branch.
Peace.
si
Well, gee whiz, OFG, since you put it that way, i’m in for $18 – in Hebrew numberology – that’s ‘LIFE.” my contribution to stylin’ and to life. Thanks.
EDWARDS-EDWARDS-EDWARDS…You go, Jane, keep all of us informed as always EDWARDS-EDWARDS-EDWARDS
That goes for me too I don’t care how he combs his hair or what he pays for a haircut
EDWARDS 2008 SHOUTING
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child. . .
I feel the same. I got of the army in august 69 and ended up two weeks later at Woodstock. The feeling of brotherhood and love was in the air and in all I met. Then to watch as vets came back from Vietnam and be spit on by the crazies who took over the peace movement. They were betrayed and WE collectively owe them much. “don’t ask a vet how he is Welcome him Home.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEFsBF1X1ow
i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it dood
That was really beautiful. fine.
I’m going to listen to it five more times.
OFG we’re in for $20. Go Edwards!
get started if you believe in justice,if you believe in freedom
L’chaim!
When did you watch as vets got spit on? I came home September 3, 69 and the people that fucked with me were right wingers who didn’t like it when I grew my hair long and went to Washington to tell them to stick their fucking war up their ass.
The CD is 1 cent, the DVD is $7.99
http://www.amazon.com/Pretende…..y_d_text_b
I’m due for my own present, thank you I’ll click through.
y’all know siun is upstairs?
http://firedoglake.com/2007/12…..-a-genius/
I want to hear more about vets getting spit on. I was one of those crazies but I’ll tell you what, if anyone spit on or at me or any vet near me, now or then, I wouldn’t be writing any letter to the editor about it.
I got out a month before you in aug. Soon after it was in the news on a regular basis. Yeah the right Nixon thugs were all over any long hair… Just Hippies squash them .
L’chaim, TexBetsy!! Our girls should wear their new shoes in good health.
I never question the personal experience of another Nam vet but read “Spitting Image” by Jerry Lemke. He did an extensive search and found no evidence of newspaper or tv coverage that actually confirmed the spitting stories. Think about it, what would you have done if some “hippy” came up and spit in your face? Crawl up in a little ball in the corner and hide? This shit gets trotted out every other time a nam vet gets his mug on TV and it helps support the chicken shit motherfuckers that never went anywhere but think war is a good idea. Where’s the Scarecrow or the Flamethrower.
The Vet spitting rumor has been debunked many times, here’s but one example.
Tanks Ell, I know you didn’t mean to make me cry. God, I love that song!
Read “Remembering Heavens Face” by John Balaban. Hell, he went to Vietnam as a civilian to work with kids wounded. When he came home he had so much rage bottled up he found himself dragging people out of cars and kicking their asses for nothing. The notion that guys that just got out of the shit would just take getting spit on is just silly.
True, the fact is the righties did all the spittin’ ( on Jane Fonda) and the peace movement welcomed the vets with open arms. What was that one guy’s name? Oh yeah, John Kerry.
Since I’m from north of the border, thought I’d bring a Canadian element into some of these songs for all the DFHs. Well, sort of Canadian.
Life Is A Carnival
and
Helpless
and
Woodstock
Yea, and citing that it was “all over the news” is a bit shaky. The righties will tell you that the media lost the war because of the way they portrayed it to the American people.
You’re totally the sharp tongued Edina. And the wasted Patsy is… well Marcy is Irish, isn’t she? Good luck finding you Bolly fix in Iowa.
Ha! When I read this I wrecked my brand new cherry red Jaguar! He he. LOL
Edwards is the true netroots candidate and in my humble opinion it’s a damn shame more netroots sites didn’t endorse him out loud. Arianna’s posters have done ad after ad for Obama, even as he steals Edwards’ issues and attacks his union supporters. I have NO respect for Obama, and I do think Dodd would make a great VP for Edwards.
p.s. I just had my suspicions justified when I read the following, which should be required reading for all progressives: hope this link works, the author is Paul Street and it was published online today.
