When presented in the 1979 compilation The Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Movie, Bugs Bunny claims that the short was the whole of Wagner’s 17-hour Opera Cycle "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (The Ring of the Nibelung, which he mispronounced as "The Rings of Nibble-lung" in his Brooklynese accent), condensed into only 7 minutes. Besides the second opera of Rings, other Wagnerian music present in the cartoon comes from Tannhäuser and The Flying Dutchman. Specific excerpts include:
- the overture from The Flying Dutchman — opening storm scene
- the "Ride of the Valkyries" from Die Walküre — "Kill the wabbit"
- Siegfried’s horn call from Siegfried — "O mighty warrior of great fighting stock"
- the overture and "Pilgrims’ Chorus" from Tannhäuser — "O Bwünnhilde, you’w so wuvwy," "Return my love," and the closing scene
- the Bacchanal from Tannhäuser — ballet scene between Elmer and Bugs

aye
hey suzanne!
Suz, that’s my favorite Bugs Bunny ever!
feet are encouraged on the chairs in front of you along with chatter during tonights show
Alicia, from the wiki:
I agree wholeheartedly.
and buttery popcorn, too?
I wonder if boosh and/or cheney think they have a spear and magic helmet?
can we throw things at the stage?
*dissolves into laughter*
I adore this cartoon beyond all reason. Every time i saw it on TV. XD Hell, i’m that way about most all original Looney Tunes. Mel Blanc is still the lord and master of the voiceover age of snark from WB. I miss him.
yeap, no pissing on the drapes tho
He was the very best. To listen to him do 2 characters at once (speaking in one character’s voice and imitating another character in the first voice) just blows me away.
Message for Scott Kelly.

Oh this is going to be good.
I got Bugs and opera and two cats behind me who are just meeting, mine and my folk’s. You ought to hear the caterwaulin’.
Purrrrrfect.
This is SOOOOO not fair… I’m going to have to look at the rest of the film and read all the comments in the morning… [sulks off to bed, dragging stuffed rabbit…]
night marion. i think i am right behind you
g’nite marion
I almost went with this one but decided it was best to start off with the best of the best.
Well now I have to link to the Youtube of Ozzy Fudd doing the heavy metal version of Kill the Wabbit.

ooo! i picked a good night to visit. Suze, i ever tell you you’re teh best? My favorite cartoon. I’ll have to save it for morning tho, visited Hell (aka Mall of America) today & i am tired.
gah, ndfg! *hands you a cup of steaming jasmine green tea* Take it, and relax!
glad you stopped by and thanks, ndfg. sorry about the visit to hell but- as my mama taught me, better you than me (laughing) i hate, hate, hate, shopping at malls
thanks alias! *takes a sip* ahhh! i love jasmine tea.
Suze, it wasn’t quite as bad as shopping … MOA has a large amusement park inside, so we invited my brother’s kids (8, 10, & 12) up for the weekend, it’s their first time to Mall of America. Buy all-day ride passes, find a nice table for me to sit at with my hand-quilting and coffee, turn the kids loose with my daughters and grandson, voila! Not too bad a day. If it had involved shopping, gah! I’d be begging you to shoot me.
When people say they just don’t make em like that anymore, here is a prime example.
Great animation, great sound,great story.
All this aimed at kids entertainment,
often depicting extreme violence, usually involving an anvil.
Look at the crap they have now,the animation and artwork is garbage.
We were spoiled and didn’t know it.
no kidding, busted. i grew up on the classics, bugs, elmer fudd, the coyote and roadrunner, tom & jerry, sylvester and tweety, just to name a few. All had classical music in the soundtrack with plot themes in the cartoons from the classics.
Here’s the real thing.

ndfg, that doesn’t sound half as bad as i had imagined. what kinda quilt are you working on (semi-reformed quilter here still working on ufo’s)
Rocky and Bullwinkle.
That stupid coyote was my hero.
Talk about yer underdogs.
I LOVED all the ACME gadgets.
thanks, Wagner’s The Ride of the Valkyries has always been such a favorite of mine.
What I loved about the cartoons of that era were they worked on so many levels, appealing to both kids and the adults.
Transylvania 6-5000
heh! UFO’s, gotta closet full of those! Some friends & i thought we should start a monthly UFO club, bring em, drink coffee, yakkety-snackety. I’m working on a hand-pieced design called 7 sisters, 1 six-pointed star in center, 6 six-pointed stars around it, all in blue and white. If i find the mag the picture is in, i’ll scan and link it some day, it’s really beautiful.
As a reformed smoker, i find hand-quilting to be a good substitute for restless fingers that want to be playing with a cigarette. Plus, as a Virgo, if i’m spending all my perfectionism trying to make my stitches perfect, then i’m not driving my kids insane trying to make them perfect *g*
The saddest roadrunner episode evah
Fractured Fairytales!
oh margot, the fractured fairytales street sweeper with the mustache… one of my first boyfriends had a mustache just like that.
Leaping Beauty
Tom & Jerry was my favorite for a while, when I was about 4, but Bugs never fails to make me smile. We were spoiled by those cartoons.
On a completely different topic, this made me smile.
Hee, hee. It’s good to see another wingnut venture fail miserably.
Double barrelled shotgun toting Elmer Fudd shooting Buggs… must have been Dick Cheney’s favorite when he was growing up.
Superb!
my brother bought himself a bugs/porky/etc collection on dvd for Christmas, brought it along to the big family get together. We were laughing all afternoon. In the first one, Yosemite Sam decided to be Bugs partner in the gold rush “Rabbit, we’ll split the proceeds. you do the work and i’ll take the gold.” (probably misquoting somewhat) heh. sounds like Rethug philosophy to me!
Suzanne…I’m drawing a blank on what the street sweeper looked like. This means I need to do YouTube research. ;)
“In actual fact, very little of the music in the cartoon comes from The Ring Cycle.”
In actual fact, very much does if you keep score on music length. The memorable “Kill the Wabbit” as you note is from “Ride of the Valkyries” from Die Walküre, which is the second opera in Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung).
Just being picky. “Very little” does not describe “some” of the music.
hey newton, did you just sneak in or did i miss you earlier?
Bwahahaha! I’d never seen that! Hysterical.
I did indeed sneak in. Busted!
That was quoted from the Wiki link in the post, bluicebank.

Thats the monsters name according to the link I snagged.
I didn’t even know he had one, I always just called him The Big Red Monster.
I don’t remember this one!
Nah. Mighty Mouse…
#52
“That was quoted from the Wiki link in the post, bluicebank.”
I know. I looked it up. But the same Wiki link uses “Ride of the Valkyries” as an example of music not from the Ring, when in fact it is the second opera of the same by Wagner.
Now then, click on the vid link, and you hear the familiar Valkyries coda open. Indeed, the Ring music is quite prominent in the very hilarious Bugs cartoon.
Just pointing this out.
busted, i was just trying to sorta kinda keep it political (i’ve always just called him The Monster)
margot, iirc, its from the 60’s parody of the 30’s buck rogers serials
IMHO, “What’s Opera, Doc” is surpassed only by “One Froggy Evening” as the greatest cartoon ever.
Unfortunately, the credit for “What’s Opera, Doc” and other WB musical gems like “One Froggy Evening” and “Rabbit of Seville,” as well the hunting trilogy (”Rabbit Fire,” “Rabbit Seasoning,” “Duck, Rabbit, Duck”) and other little masterpieces starring Daffy (”Duck Amuck.” “Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century, The Scarlet Pumpernickel), Bugs (”Bully For Bugs,” “8 Ball Bunny”) plus the introductory cartoons of Pepe le Pew and the Road Runner, usually goes to their director, Chuck Jones, when it should in fairness be shared with their writer, Michael Maltese.
Maltese’s unforgettable work includes not only great dialogue (”Aha! Pronoun trouble!”) but lyrics that you can never get out of your head (”Kill the Wah-bit”), but he got bupkis for it.
If the WGA members now on strike think they’ve been royally screwed by the studios, they should check out how shabbily cartoon writers, even those as brilliant as Maltese, have always been treated.
underdog
fred thompson
I do, I do! XD Daffy Duck is still one of my favorite dorky characters to this day. Can’t help but grin like a loon at those old ‘toons.
excellent point. i was very surprised to find the cartoons on the utube. so many of the music studio’s have disallowed embedding of utubes for ‘copyright protection’.

Oh yeah, loved Johnny Quest.

Does anyone like Scrooge McDuck?
So this is kinda funny. Found out the other day that youtube had been blocked at work… …even the embeds. Well that night I was working in a union position, tonight, I am in a supervisory position, and guess what?
The computer in my office gets youtube JUST FINE. I guess I just wasn’t earning enough $$ per hour to watch youtube the other night.
And now…
We have a winner.
That rattled my memory banks for a second.
Scrooge!
And Hewey.

Some of these tonight were prime time tv shows. Egad, as a kid, I did not realize just how good i had it.
Popeye meets my future ex girlfriend.
I remember most of ‘em. Then again, ‘ve been an animation geek for as long as i can remember. Which amuses me since i’m so much younger than most of the regulars here. XD The wit of so many of them are still priceless.

Those were great too.
I bow to the master.
Never heard of this one.
one of my first memories was a righteous temper tantrum i threw when crusader rabbit was preempted for some news thing.
busted, its ralph and sam
Jeez, the story line on Crusader rabbit makes me wonder if Karl Rove didn’t watch that one over and over, it even has Texas.
Thankyou thank you.
That was one of my real favorites.
that poor coyote took a fierce beating everyday.
I loved it when he would snatch up a bunch of sheep and tip toe off.

Howdy Suzanne, how ya doing?
Yeah I hear you on the fading thing.
My sleep schedule is FUBAR.
I should fall down and go to sleep soon.
MMan, I’m flipped, up at night and sleeping during the day. Other than that, doing ok.
Bugs and Taz
Good times. Cackling like that witch in the Hanzel and Gretel cartoon watching Ralph and Sam.
My sleep schedule has been whacked for the past couple months. I don’t even fight it anymore.
I always got a kick out of the Ant and the Aardvark too.
I try not to fight it but with the house going back on the market 1/6, I’m gonna have to not be sleeping in my bed during the day.
nighters, latelate krewe
oh yeah! pink panther show. that was a great one.
Night Teddy, have a good one.
The 3 Little Bops
g’nite teddy, see ya tomorrow nite for your Late Nite.
Good night TSF
Yes somehow someone sleeping in bed is what staging is all about. That is the term they use isn’t it, staging.
Pete the Puma
That should have been Yes somehow someone sleeping in bed is not what staging is all about
LOL, I understood that, MMan, both way even. yeap, staging is not a sprawled out snoring token and i sawing logs – that soundtrack does not say ‘buy me’.
Where are you heading after you sell the house?
ok pups, time for me to head out. my typo to byte ratio is way outta whack – a sure sign i’m getting tired.
MMan, i’m thinking around the great pacific northwest somewhere. my medical coverage is kaiser so that keeps me around portland, salem area of oregon and vancouver, longview area of southern washington.
I think I am going to call it a night.
them two cats are still having fits but I think they are getting ready for a cease fire.
With that, I give you the instantly recognizable Porky Pig.
Let me know Where Suzanne, those last two are in my neck of the woods.
Very cool Suzanne, I’m thinking of heading that way myself, bot the the northwest and bed
Thats all folks. Gnite.
will do, busted. thanks for the that’s all folks :)
*poof*
good nite busted
MM?
I think this thread will go down in FDL history.
Gnite.
CNN is reporting that Militants killed Bhutto by Militants I take it they mean Terrorists rather than gunmen hired by General Musharraf.
Fine CNN gets it wrong again and misleads the American people what else is new.
But CNN also reported that by reading the local papers it seems that there are riots going on all over Pakistan.
CNN is not thinking, Bush is not thinking by blaming Terrorists or Militants they give the American People the impression Al Quieda did this. So when the American people see all of Pakistan rioting they will think that Al Quieda is very popular in Pakistan.
They will assume then that Bush has lost control of the situation. They will assume the President is an idiot for giving a corrupt dictator Billions of dollars and Advanced weapons. They will assume that Bush is a Mark who got played who pays and keeps paying Musharraf money, but the guy still won’t let us go after Ossama.
The longer the rioting lasts the worse it is for Bush.
I’m getting the impression that the distinction between the two is not so all that great. Musharraf has been protecting Bin Laden, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban for several years now.
Joke Klein was on Tweety with scoops and predictions to expect special forces to go into Pakistan and try and take out Ossama. Hmmm? I wonder what has finally lit a fire under Bush’s bonnet to get Ossama now after all of these years.
Tweety being Tweety didn’t even ask Joke the obvious follow up question of, but won’t Pakistan object? And why do we feel we can ignore Pakistan’s objection now, isn’t this all just political expediency on Bush’s part.
How desperate is Bush politically he has spent months as a 30%er and it does not look like he is going to be moving up in the polls any time soon.
A daring raid to capture Ossama might be his only way up in the polls. But why did he wait so long, why was he willing to attack Iran rather than go after Ossama. Why did he wait until Pakistan is rioting?
Pakistan’s spy agency created Al Quieda, General Musharraf by not letting us go after Ossama is protecting them, but the Army all by itself killed Bhutto’s father and probably her two brothers. Which I feel explains why the Generals attempts to blame Al Quieda are falling on deaf ears in Pakistan.
I think the MSM is trying to separate Al Quieda from the Pakistani army but while they both may have their own agendas on something like this I’m betting the General gave the word.
What could sink Bush is if the American people find out that we have been giving billions to the #@@%& who created Al Quieda. Suddenly all the stability arguments in the middle east would fall flat after we say how about we stop giving Pakistan money first and then see what happens.
If the General falls evidence might come out about the Pakistan governments continuing connections to Al Quieda. It is just so hard to believe that they both would stop talking.
The next days headlines should read if we had an independent MSM Bush gave the creators of Al Quieda billions after 9/11 was it Tribute?
KOZ is balanced out by Rove I think that is fair a real Lefty and not a Joke Klein fake liberal. I have ever confidence that KOZ will have be more popular than Rove because facts beat math.
But William the Bloody at the New York Times uh who are they going to get to balance him out Jane? Or is Bobo going to leave after being embarrassed by Paul Krugman of the Times over Reagen’s racist legacy.
With 70% of the country moving left the Times wants to move right? Are they looking to lose readers, forget balance this guy lies. Why would I pay to read Lies I read to learn stuff.
I don’t think the already angry Times stockholders are going to be happy about this.
I didn’t know bugs bunny ever lost!
I used to love the mighty mouse operas;
“hhhheeeeEEERRRREEeee I come to save the dAYYYY”
funny thing though, those cartoons we grew up with were incredibly violant and I’m not sure I’d want my kids watching them
they would be rated r at the very least
ny times is supposed to be the “liberal paper of record”, it’s supposed to be the most powerful paper in the world
when the ny times actually gives a venue to a man who’s only credentials is being wrong, a man who clearly wants nothing but war, a man who is clearly an apologist for anything the fascists do
then you know the paper has been taken over by the fascists and taken over for good
this is much more harmfully then we are imagining, this gives the fascists krystol speaks for a position of authority and credibility, it gives his deliberate lies and deception credibility and it turns the laughable claims he makes into legitimate subjects for discussion
the new york times is dead
the fourth estate has been purchased as if it is instead real estate and it is owned by fascists
High oil prices effect more than the price I pay for gas at the pump which is outrageous and I drive an Echo.
Ford was bailed out recently and they mortgaged everything to do it even the copyright on the Ford Name. Thanks to that deal Institutional Investors now own 80.84% of the company. But higher oil prices and a bad economy have lowered their stock price to $6.70 a share and they have stopped paying their dividend.
Net income is -$380 million just for the Sept quarter. What happens when all the Institutional Investors decide they give up. What happens to the little guy who invested in a fund, bank, etc who invested in Ford.
Ford makes money off of trucks and SUVs I don’t know if they still lose money on the sale of small cars. Ford never really went green like they said they would I think they have 2 hybrids.
They could have cleaned up though if they had gone green. I wonder when they mortgaged the company what their business plan said the price of gas had to be at for them to become profitable again? Certainly it was lower than gas prices are now.
Now considering that we have been fighting this war for oil for how many years now? And G.W has not been able to get the price of oil to go down, well just what were these financial experts thinking when they bought into Ford. Why didn’t they push Ford to make more Hybrids.
A democrat will be president soon but by doing nothing democrats will once again get the blame as they clean up another Bush mess. Ford is a time delayed time bomb waiting to go off on a democratic president I’m sure that there are more.
We need the Fairness Doctrine back, we need to break up the big media companies. We need to take away Rupert Murdoch’s Citizenship, becoming a citizen just so yo can buy newspapers, radio and tv stations to try and make America move to the Right seems to me to be the very reason we don’t allow foreigners to own media companies. Because then they might try and influence our political process!
Rupert’s giving to the GOP before he got citizenship but after he started to buy media companies and turn them into rightwing propaganda mills should be looked into.
you know, I didn’t know Murdock became a citizen and wasn’t naturally born
where is he from?
this should be big discussion here, certainly not something someone like me is just finding out about
morning!
yo
you probably mean murdoch? he’s from australia and became a usa citizen, because only citizens are (or at least, were – i don’t know current law)) allowed to own tv stations.
interesting wiki article
Australia I think
I wonder if favorable news coverage to GOPers could be considered a quid and the GOPers giving him Citizenship plus waivers to operate more than one media in a market he already has a controlling share in would be a quo?
mornin’
John Zogby’s on CSPAN re: polling
From Wikipediia
” In 1999, The Economist reported that Newscorp Investments had made £1.4 billion ($2.1 billion) in profits over the previous 11 years but had paid no net corporation tax. It further reported, after an examination of what was available of the accounts, that Newscorp would normally have expected to pay a corporate tax of approximately $350 million. The article explained that the corporation’s complex structure, international scope and use of offshore havens allowed News Corporation to avoid tax.[27][28]”
I wonder who else besides Newscorp isn’t paying takes?
Good morning pups!
What’s opera…isn’t that a browser?
Good morning, pups. MoDo is back to regale us once more in the dying hours of 2007. She says New Year’s resolutions require too much discipline. An exorcism seems much easier. Be that as it may, maybe she could make just ONE resolution for 2008 — to try to write substantive columns. Just a thought…
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got eggs Benedict or if you’re like me and prefer spinach, eggs Florentine. I do make a mean hollandaise, if I do say so myself… Have a grand day.
good morning, egregious.
Hi, Marion. Is it raining in Savannah?
am I the only mighty mouse fan here?
It’s gray and foggy right now, but it rained just about all last night. It looks like it may rain some more later, too.
It’s pouring in Athens.
Well, he was okay but he wasn’t one of my big favorites. Tweety (no, not that Tweety) and Sylvester, on the other hand…
It’s been raining here all night…and is still drizzling.
and thundering too.
YAY for the rain down there !
raven and lindy – glad to hear that you are getting rain.
Yay indeed! The weather’s just weird though — they’re forcasting temps around 20° Wednesday night… It was 75 yesterday.
Mighty Mouse!
Unless I missed something while scrolling down this morning, no one has mentioned Rocky and Bullwinkle or its subordinate segments (Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, Fractured Fairy Tails, Mr. Peabody’s Improbable Adventures, Bullwinkle’s Corner, Aesop & Son, Mr. Know-It-All.) These Jay Ward productions were by far the favorite, in terms of enthusiasm if not ratings, TV cartoons of my fraction of the baby-boomer generation for their unique combination of kid appeal (funny voices, goofy characters, and silly plots) with witty wordplay and knowing cultural references. I can see that the Firedoglake gang needs further education at my alma mater, Wossamatta U.
From Bugs Bunny to The Family Guy: A study in cultural dissolution.
You missed something.
A lot of those were mentioned but not linked to.
Damn I had a lot of fun last night.
Stuff I normally couldn’t remember if my life depended on it.
There are some great links to mine through.
Some real treasures.
