I’d like a nice single malt scotch, please. One cube.
*spiffying up the place* judas forking priest, no one told me the boss man was here tonight. lard love a duck, its forking friday nite, doesn’t he ever go home
Couldn’t decide between Vienna Teng and this.
Hi RGB… been missing you… really enjoyed meeting you and our conversations.
Here’s another thing I don’t understand about Bush’s veto “threat:” Naomi Klein says The Chicago Boys always make the new governments pay the old government’s debts unless they agree to accept the shock proposals. Since we imposed the shock proposals first, and James Baker 3 negotiated away most of Iraq’s debt to Kuwait, what are all these litigations Shrub’s all upset about all of a sudden?
Could it be the cases against the Saudi government by 9/11 survivors?
Lautenberg mentions Lockerbee and the Marines Lebanon bombing as the impetus for his proposal, and says that Iraq isn’t part of the equation at all. I wouldn’t think so, if JB3 got all the debts negotiated.
Or is it all feint, around the recess appointments and Congress’s legitimacy as a separate branch? (**Article One, fuck yeah!!**)
Guess what happened to me today? OK. You don’t have to guess, I’ll tell ya.
I’m in my office, staring out the window and um, analyzing stuff, yeah that’s it… and what do my eyes behold? A Gathering of White Kids. Clean and well-dressed I might add. No wait. Some of them are holding signs. That explains the news trucks and cables all over the place. This is an event. A political event! And who should arrive at this event? The guy whose name is on all the signs…. RUDY.
It was a real live political rally right outside my window. Yipeeeee! Lasted about 5 minutes. Long enough to get him on local TV (they didn’t show the meagre crowd of white kids) and pick up an endorsement from some delusional state troopers and whoooosh… off to raise some more dinero. Huckster was here yesterday and now Rudy comes in right after him — Rudy is pissing away a double digit lead.
Zevon! love that song
hiya!!!!!!!!!
I think the question is “Doesn’t he ever go out?”
Didja see Judi?
suzanne, hand me the windex. i am good with that stuff.
Hey Katie, saw your comment when Jane was without heat and remembered your long cold spell last winter. Hope you were nice and toasty over the holidays.
Evening all. So you say we can have anything? I think I’ll take a large Bushmills on the rocks and a substantial raise (say enough to bring me up to the national average). I also vote for the Zevon and the sentiment embodied in it.
I missed him. He was in and out that quickly. I was downstairs when they were waiting, got tired, went upstairs, putzed around a few minutes, went back downstairs & got some coffee, went back outside to call him a scumbag or an asshole or something but he was already gone.
Hi everyone…. Elmore is going to London and Paris without me….. have just too many medical expenses to rack up more travel expenses on top of them…. we have discussed a move to France and working TeeVee in the EU…. pretty bummed…
Or . . .
Is it Dubya throwing a tantrum because he didn’t get every blessed little toy from Congress for Christmas? “I don’t care what I asked for — this is what I waaannnttt! And I want it NNNNNOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW!!”
When he’s been treated like a spoiled kid by the GOP in Congress for seven years, why expect him to change now?
“Send lawyers, guns and money–Dad, get me out of this!”
May we dedicate that number to George W.?
oh katy :(
aaawww shit..
Just for a visit or permanently?
Hiya! Say anything?
Katymine maybe you can go the next time?
I want snow.
what should i say christine?
so far the heat pump is working and nice and toasting inside… we have had lows of 30 and lovely highs in the 60’s in Phoenix. We are having another frost warning tonight. Had ice on my front walk from the sprinklers overflow freezing.
Oh this was our planned two week vacation to London & Paris… I just could not do it facing another 5K of medical bills
Nice on the Teng. Got that album when it came out. “Ponchartrain” is particularly stunning.
*waving to Katymine and RBG* A chunk of the NW contingent is here!
Me too. Still snowless. Has done this every year for three years. Really nice snowfall right after Thanksgiving when I am buried up to my eyes and then it all melts off by the end of finals week. Still haven’t used those new cross country skis I bought 2 years ago. 8(
Hiya Cassie,
Just glad to be here…
OMG – we are having homes empty for sale by real estate agents where they have been stripped, appliances, heat pumps and anything else stripped.
The Teng is very nice, but there’s a soft spot in my heart for Zevon. Gotta go with LG&M if I’m forced to choose.
Used to go to a bar in Newark when I was in school and if someone would ask for Bushmills’s the bartender would bring over a bottle of Jameson’s and say in a delightful brogue, “Would ye like Irish whiskey?” If they persisted, this would be followed by “No Bushmills. Jameson’s.”
Some pretty pictures from Scarlet:
http://freewayblogger.blogspot…..ow-it.html
Damn Funny Video too.
Sorry.
Katymine, would the move to EU be short term or permanent?
*waving to scarlet*
My hero from Arizona… keep at it…
I hate whiskey Nazis. Bushmills is still better than Jamesons (though that is a close second).
I should mention that Suzanne painted some of those puppies… Hi Suzanne! I’m in a motel in Buttonwillow California. Don’t tell anyone.
People here have been having problems for a while with thieves taking the copper piping used during repairs after the storm. So many neighborhoods are still un or under occupied so it is easy to slide in, steal all the copper and move on without detection.
Where?

lips sealed, scarlet
Dang, the big guy is around, no baseball chatter…
Boulder Creek, CA, at about 627′ elevation.
it probably wishful thinking…Elmore and I have kids who are young adults and I still have parents who are in their 80″s…..
Yep Madmommie… same here…. houses stripped of copper plumbing, wiring and heat pumps. We have whole subdivisions empty. At least we are past the west Nile problems with abandoned pools.
Heh, Did Zevon just dis Kauai? Hmmm…
I’m heading out to Alta in a week. Base 68″/ Check out the link. Do you ever get snow at your altitude? (or attitude?)
Theft of copper wire is out of control here. Rudy didn’t addrtess that while he was here. We gotta stay on the offense against the “Islamic terrorists.” He used that expression twice. Does he always say “Islamic terrorists.” Nobody’s more offensive that Musharraf and look what good it’s done.
I hate snow. It makes me wet and cold.
Feb 27th will be our fist game for Cactus Leauge!
2008 Cactus League
usual snow line is 1,000′ around here – but there is a picture in the clubhouse of snow here – taken the winter before i moved up here (or perhaps the winter before that)
Do the repubs know there are Islamic Nice People?
Naw, Either Canadian Ryes or single malt Scotches…
Come on, it’s Rudy. All 9/11, all the time. It’s the only horse he’s got and he’s gonna ride it right to the glue factory.
Cassie, only ones they care about are the ones with money.
Grew up in Buffalo before global warming. I LOVE snow.
Just checked out your location on mapquest. Looks pretty superior.
I just want to experience being inside my home and having snow outside my front door. Haven’t had that since I was 2.
Evening everyone from a very wet NJ. All rain here.
Canadian ryes are nice, but, with a couple of very expensive exceptions, scotch tastes like it was filtered through a moldy sweat sock.
hey MMan
There’s a lovely mental picture!
On C-SPAN2 last weekend they played some conference on political framing, that took place at the NYPublic Library-main branch, the one with the lions in the front. The R spokesman asked the audience (probably 300 people) which candidates they were supporting. When he said “Rudy” he was met by dead silence. No one even cared enough to boo.
Phoenix night clubs with uni-sex restrooms so that transgender patrons visit specific clubs.
Ohh local news talks about lettermans agreement with WGA… very good!
They don’t care…
http://www.crooksandliars.com/…..eir-caves/
Bushmill’s is Unionist and Jameson’s is Republican. It’s a political thing.
Heh! Bless his heart, he’s too much of an egomaniac to realize he is going down in flames.
Cheap scotch does remind me of that, Glenlivet is nice…
Any of this sound familiar?
“The biggest threat to Pakistan and this nation is from these terrorists,” he said. “I seek unity and support from the nation … we will not sit and rest until we get rid of these terrorists, root them out.”
Musharraf said this yesterday after Bhutto’s assassination. I find the “root them out” especially ironic. So we have the assassination, supposed binLaden video coming, and today’s pocket pool being played by Boosh, all within three days. Coincidence? Hardly, IMHO.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/200…..ndia311414
Well, that would make it difficult.
Where in NJ? I was born and raised there. Oh, man, I miss the fresh kielbasa this time of year. And the bagels. And the diners. And the pizza and Italian food. the cold rain? Not so much.
Hey Suzanne, we used to have a decent amount of snow around here, now though it rarely happens. I enjoy it, something very peaceful about it. And nothing beats walking around in while it’s falling.
We have snow on the ground in New Paltz, NY. It’s about 10 days old–had 10″, followed two days later by another 2″ of slush which froze solid overnight. It’s been slightly above freezing most days since, but there’s still plenty left. Unfortunately I had to move wood to my back porch today, so have ruts in the soft ground from my tractor tires.
zactly.
Hi Chris, do you still have snow?
We have rain, but it was in the 50s here today.
The town of Pitman, a small dreadful little town nestled on the edge of suburbia about 18 miles from Philly.
yeap, that is exactly what i want to experience – from my home – being able to walk outside into the falling snow, the silence, the crispness and softness in the air.
*plus I wanna see token’s reaction to snow
Even expensive scotch tastes like that to me. Oban and one other single malt whose name I can’t remember are the only ones I have tried that were ok.
Oh yeah. I’ve been in the area. Believe it or not I knew somebody – haven’t been in touch for about 20 years – from there. But I’m from North Jesey.
Hey ToW, enjoyed an almost white Xmas on the other side of the river.
The poor little guy would be flummoxed! Especially in a heavy snow, with those teesy little legs, his belly would get mighty cold.
Lagavulin, neat.
Once on a business trip to Europe I arrived at the Intercontinental in London at 6pm, and my room was ready but hadn’t been inspected, so they invited me for a drink on the house in the interim. I asked the bartender if he had whatever single malt I was drinking at the time, and he asked what I liked about them. Said I: the smokier the better. He said Lagavulin was for me. He lined up 6 glasses, and gave me a taste of each of the single malts he had on hand. He was right. Lagavulin it’s been ever since.
Gee this town has their panties in a twist just with deep frost…. it has been nearly 8 years that snow has been in the forecast…
Tomorrow going to a new event in Phoenix…. Phoenix downtown market… it is a baby of the current Portland Oregon Saturday Market. YEA who says that progressive things don’t rock.
The smell of scotch makes me ill. First time I ever got drunk it was on scotch that a friend had stolen. This guy went into a liquor store, grabbed two half gallons of scotch and just walked out. But I didn’t know how much you needed to drink to get drunk or anything. Wound up passed out on a beach. I think that was before I puked all over the place. No more scotch for me, thank you. Ah, memories.
Little guy is proudly wearing a sweater i made him outta one of my watch caps. he gave me a dirty look when i tried to take it off him earlier
That’s funny, it’s such a small world. This is such a small town and for you to know someone from here. Where at in North Jersey are you from?
Now we’re talking…
http://firedoglake.com/2007/12…..y-arrests/
Now how do we get Pelosi and Reid to Vermont to get some sense drilled into them?
As a wise man around here used to say…ATTACCKKKKKK!!!!
He’d be shaking his paws with every step…! ;-)
i liked that one myself :)
Kearny. It’s squoze in between Newark and Jersey City. Most of it is Meadowlands.
Is anyone going to ask Fruitcake Rudy if genocide is still on the table?
-G
Good evening dear friends. Anyone up for cherry pie?
Just in time for some pie, then it’s of to bed for me. Thanks TexB!
I doubt it’s possible to do that, the sense part.
where in North Jersey BFL? i’ve lived in englewood & tenafly.
He was in The City Beautiful today and it’s such a magical place. No one would dare ask such a thang.
Cherry pie is my favorite. What do you have for everybody else?
Calling it a night. Take care all.
See my 97. Kearny.
This is why you deal with borrowers in default in a bad market and do anything reasonable to keep them in the houses. The collateral goes to hell fast, the insurance carriers raise hell (increased risk of fire, etc), and the neighborhood also goes to hell. A few unsold foreclosures can transform an entire neighborhood into a slum pronto.
I just can’t wait to get out of here and say I’m originally from NJ. Hopefully that will happen in 2008.
Aloha, DD!
If there’s no strawberry rhubabrb. That’s another thing I miss about NJ. Strawberry rhubarb pie. They don’t even know what it is here.
Good Night DrDick.
Oh this is just beautiful:
“A group in Brattleboro is petitioning to put an item on a town meeting agenda in March that would make Bush and Vice President Cheney subject to arrest and indictment if they visit the southeastern Vermont communit”
OK. So how many cities are there in America? Just get one at a time. Forget Impeachment resolutions anymore with Pelosi and Reid around…let’s just move straight to arrest!
Brought 50 pies. Only one is yours.
*raising face up from empty pie container* 50? no problem, got any ice cream?
It’ll do for now. Thank you very much.
g’nite dr (pause) dick
vanilla ice cream, of course.
http://www.preparedpantry.com/…..eCream.jpg
Just doesn’t have that ring…
She’s….My….Strawberry Rhubarb Pie!
I can see why Warrant stuck to cherries.
You’re going to miss the food – I imagine that would include cheesteak sandwhiches down by you. And do they call ‘em hoagies down there? And the strawberry rhubarb pie. And wherever you go, they’ll make fun of the way you talk. Didn’t you say once you went out of town and someone said you talked like Tony Soprano?
Phoenix was having a really terrible time during the August-September heat where foreclosure homes and abandoned pools were at risk for West Nile virus.
I was unable to sit outside near my pool without getting swarmed by mosquitoes.
Yum cherry pie!
I love a well prepared pantry :) thanks tex
What? Not cherry vanilla?
Have no fear. The
A,B,C….Team Clusterfuck is on the job!“In a secure videoconference yesterday linking officials in Washington, Islamabad and Crawford, Tex., Bush received briefings from CIA Director Michael V. Hayden and U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson, said National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe. Bush then discussed Bhutto’s assassination and U.S. efforts to stabilize Pakistan with his top foreign policy advisers, including Vice President Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and national security adviser Stephen J. Hadley, as well as Adm. William J. Fallon of Central Command and Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.”
Ladies and gentlemen, we now have enough fear to propel the ‘Republicans will keep you safe from the terrrrists’ meme into election day 2008.
-G
Ick.
only for you.
http://www.sunsetbeach.co.za/i…..ii_620.jpg
It was a lovely snow fall here, and luckily, none of it stuck. I hate shoveling.
*sorry, I was off doing laundry*
of course, they are gonna toss some gas on that bonfire, gsd. they can’t help themselves, bless their hearts.
Cherry is the best…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxIcSTGkO4I
Yeah. I’m not so sure they needed anything. Thay would have gone down that route anyway.
BTW, Rudy’s Florida stragdidy is going down the terlit.
Just the trick. I’ll have to return the favor at Netroots Nation in Austin in July.
I never got the whole thing about cheesesteaks, I won’t miss them. And I don’t eat very much processed foods, so hoagies have been off the menu for a long time. I know I would miss good pizza, but overall I should be ok with the food.
I enjoyed it when the guys in Vancouver, BC spoke about my accent. I was the exotic foreigner with an accent which was quite fun.
I never met a flavor of ice cream that I didn’t like. It’s all so good. Brands, now that’s a different story.
I put that WaPoo article MSNBC refers to on the ticker, GSD
Austin has some amazing gelato and ice cream places.
Speaking of Rudy – he tried to veer from his “9/11 every time, all the time” meme on Tweety tonight and all he could come up with was “I was the Mayor of NY, not just during 9/11 but during bad econmic times…blah blah” It was rather funny. And sad.
Careful what you wish for there. In case of rebellion, the Constitution permits suspension of habeas corpus. Some days I think they’ve just been trying to goad us all into rebellion all along.
Gilroy, California has a garlic festival. Garlic ice cream.
I can imagine it’s got a nice compliment of flavor to sweet and creamy. Have you tried it?
Any close to the place where the convention will be?
garlic was not my favorite flavor.
… there used to be a great icecream shop on ocean in santa cruz with a cinnamon icecream that was to die for. yum yum. the food was good in ca.
Feckin’ schweet.
-G
I recommend Amy’s Ice Cream on 6th St, just west of Lamar. Assuming it’s still there. Haven’t visited Austin in a few years, but Amy’s was really good.
They’ve already suspended habaes corpus anyway. We certainly have nothing to lose on that point.
In July 2005 I met the lovely Molly Ivans in Austin… pictures on facebook… sure miss that lady…
Not sure how close. Car/cab/bus may be required.
Hmmm,
Hmmmmm….hasn’t habeas corpus already been suspended?
Katymine, can’t the pools be drained? I’m assuming you don’t have water table problems that make empty pools pop. Seems to me the municipality should be able to move on that stuff, or pass ordinances so they can (and put liens of the property for the costs). That’s a major public health risk.
Naw, never been to the Garlic Festival, just smell garlic whenever we drive through there. It agree it could be good… or it could be bad.
Went on a rafting trip with her & 10 other great women (Donna shalala was another) in 1980. Have a great photo but don’t know how to past it somewhere on the www.
Jinx, Bonkers
I would say that at present there is a pretty tightly limited suspension of habeas. General rebellion would provide cover for a great increase, on the order of “let’s round up anybody who looks, acts, or thinks funny” which would be (even) worse.
You can set up a free account at flick.com. Have the photo scanned at a resolution of 72 dpi, saved as jpeg or gif file format, and once you have the account ste up on flickr, you can upload it.
During the heat the pools cannot be drained as it cracks the plaster & concrete foundation. You do not drain your pool during the summer unless you are having your pool refinished.
Hmmm,
Yummmmm. You reminded me on one of my all time favorite restaurants.
http://www.thestinkingrose.com/
Mmmmm…..Mmmmmm….Mmmmmm
That’s flickr.com not flick.com.
Yes, by merely sprinkling some pixie dust, err… anointing someone an Enemy of the State…
That looks like fun. Never been.
D’oh!
I’ve already scanned it in. So I’ll keep your instructions & give it a try when I’m fresher. Thanks.
Why is Condi advocating that the Pakistan elections go ahead as scheduled?
I knew that. *g*
selise – maryann’s?
Truly unique experience. Been to each one several times and still get excited to go every time!
Because she’s an incompetent stooge.
-G
Bhutto anger violence, pocket veto, and David Hicks stories top the NPR newscast — dang, ain’t we topical!
Chatty bunch in the evening aren’t we?
I don’t usually get to participate.
I agree. They would. They are now saying that habaes corpus is only suspended for non Americans. But let’s test ‘em. The alternative is to be scared about what they might do; so we do nothing. And that just sucks.
Because Musharraf is damaged goods now and Sharif is our New Designated Stooge?
hey busted – you feeling better?
You’re welcome, you can store up to 70 photos for free I believe, and for $24.95 for a year you get unlimited amount of storage space. There’s also photobucket.com, which I’ve never used but I can imagine is very similar.
Not exactly… Padilla is American.
She was a wonder, wasn’t she?
I loved a book of hers…I think it was Who Let the Dogs In?
could be! i do remember that it started with an “M”
but that was 20-25 years ago!
seeing you at late night always brings back memories.
Yes, thank goodness. Thanks.
Hi Busted… hope you are feeling better
Because it wouldn’t provide any time to wheel out another candidate in time for the Jan. 8th elections, Mushie is the man!
Does it matter really? The deck is stacked against the opposition no matter what.
i thought sharif was the saudi stooge.
in any event, sharif has been saying his party would be boycotting the elections. and, iirc, he’s not allowed to run.
‘course rules don’t mean nothing…. but if it does go down that way, i wonder if musharaf would “win”
iirc, there was also an assassination attempt on sharif yesterday too
damn. i want to know why bush is vetoing the “defense” bill.
has anyone seen hugh recently?
yes, four people were killed… but he survived.
Lol, typical me, I had to test the limits. I had a corndog after work.
I figured if that stayed down, anything would.
I’m good to go.
And that contradicts “Sharif is our stooge” in what way exactly…? ;-)
The whole situation in Pakistan is wacked….
Bhutto’s #2 of her party is under house arrest… He was caught up in the great Lawyer Revolt…
Aw katymine – good golly I miss Ms Molly too. I met her very briefly at a big bookseller convention in LA. A friend gave me a ticket to a Sunset Magazine event whose panel was chaired by Pat Schoeder, with Al Franken, Bill O’Reilly and other names I have forgotten. O’Reilly and Frankin were seated next to the other with Ms.Molly beside Franken. O’Reilly went bonkers as Franken rolled over him with clever corrections. Ms.Molly scooted her seat back, and took notes keeping her head down. A verbal melee soon broke out and Pat Schoeder recoiled into speechlessness as O’Reilly lost it completely and eventually stomped off the stage screaming obscenities over his shoulder at a grinning Al Franken.
So I created the account. Now I’m damned if I can find the pic on my computer. I scanned it in last summer & don’t remember where I put it. I don’t have very many pics and I’ve never taken the time to figure out how to organize them. Back to searching.
Wonder if Pervez is gonna go MushaBOOM!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=fr7zVwX4fsU
npb that sounds like fun!
I met Molly Ivans during DemocracyFest 2005…. it was July in Austin and there was a panel discussion with Lou Debous, Molly and others about Tom Delay, Jamison (?) and it was so much fun.
It was after lunch… came back from the bathroom and there was Molly sitting on the edge of the stage in front of the Turbine Fan trying to cool off and I asked her if I could take her picture for my own mother who was in her 80’s who love her…. Molly snapped her fingers and said to a young man…. “get over here and take this picture because her Momma wants it” and as the camera took the pic…. Molly waved saying… “Hi Mom”
She was so full of life and vinegar. Fell in love with her right then. What a wonderful woman.
That’s it for me tonight. Been a long week of most of my coworkers on vacation and the rest of us trying to keep up with a regular work load, so I’m pooped.
See everyone tomorrow. *mwah*
That sounds like fun. was that on C-SPAN? I saw one event where Franken got under O’Liely’s skin on C-SPAN.
I feel very inadequate to the task of figuring out what’s going on. For example, the following is something I never would have read into the contradictory-causes-of-death problem:
good point.
g’nite tow
Millineryman
I found the photo, but it’s embedded in a word document. Can I extract it somehow & put it into flickr, or do I have to scan it in again?
That is priceless… 8-)
Goodnite, The Other WA.
OMG, I watched that on CSpan. It was beautiful!
I beg your pardon?
Actually, I’ve seen video of this. I think it’s on the ‘Tube. It musta been fun to see that in person!
Good night & sleep well.
How’s Al’s run going these days?
The current theories are:
1. He’s an asshole.
2. He’s trying to stop a part of the bill that holds the Iraq government harmless in any lawsuits; and unbelievably they (the Iraqi’s) are threatening to take “their” billions out of US banks.
3. He’s a stoopid asshole.
4. He is testing the “is congress in session or not?” theory. If it is not; he’s gonna jump on those resess appointments. and
5. Well, he’s the biggest asshole ever.
Let’s vote!! I happen to be an odd number person myslef.
I saw that too. Molly was at that one, and was just funny as hell.
Sharif don’t like it.
-G
Funny but they filmed alot of the Soprtano’s in the town I grew up in – Kearny – pork store, Italian-American club (it’s really an Irish- Americabn club).
You need the original scanned file to upload. Send me the file at millineryman at mac dot com. I’ll see what I can do to extract it for you. I’m a graphic designer so I have some software that you might not have to work with.
here’s c-span’s archive of events with molly ivins. what is any of these?
there’s also the section 1079 thingy.
should be able to drag and drop it to your desktop (well, if you’re on a mac anyway).
Being a second generation Italian, I can relate to the Sopranos, all thought my family was never connected. I got a Sopranos Cookbook as a gift once, and it had a few recipes that my grandmother used to make in it. Quite authentic from what I could see.
Oh mar, now he’s gonna have to shock the cash bar.
Sent it off to millinaryman. I’m not on a mac, anyhow. But thanks.
I hope it was caught on video though I don’t recall CSpan cameras & crew in the room. I treasure the thank you note she penned and mailed to me praising my late reporter Dad’s first book I had presented to her during our all too brief encounter.
Public safety primes property owners’ rights. I’d press my gov’t hard. Notice to the owner and if it’s not resolved, resolve it however is most expedient (and won’t require coming back). Foreclosed properties do have owners. And those pools aren’t going to last long without attention anyway. Seriously, maybe they ought to be filled with concrete or something. I imagine it won’t be long before a lot of communities are looking at their neglected/abandoned property regs. The owners’ solution is to put reliable caretaker tenants in the properties – at the right price they can be found.
Franken is one of my heroes, and mentors via his books. I used to listen to him every day on my way to work. I don’t find him so all that funny, but he is amazingly smart and well informed. I’m told it’s likely that he’ll beat Norm Coleman next fall and enter the Senate — lucky us.
It was the 2003 LA Book Fair – great catch selise – sadly the CSPan coverage apparently did not include the Sunset Magazine luncheon – but viewing the one they have in the archives is a jewel in its own right as was Miss Molly.
Molly was awesome and is irreplaceable. My favorite: “Some kind of manly.”
I recall that there were some Marines held in the first Gulf War that sued Saddam and the Iraqi government for mistreatment.
But Bush actually vetoing a Bill that gave him everything he wanted because of this is absurd.
Recall his screeching about how if the $70 billion supplemental wasn’t passed – and it was incorporated into this thing- that the troops in Iraq were at great risk because of Congress’ dawdling and “playing politics”. Then he got Gates up threatening to put tens of thousands of DOD personnel on furlough during the Christmas Holidays!
Well is it beinf pointed out that because of his veto HE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS…unless…unless…all that was simply bullsh*t “playing politics”.
Now he is going to immunize the Iraqi government and their US accounts IF US Veterans actually win their suits against the Iraqi government! Oh, and aren’t there individuals (contractors and soldiers) that have been arrested and mistreated by the CURRENT Iraqi government? How does this immunization affect them?
I don’t get this issue over “testing the power” of Congress to adjourn or stay in session.
“Article 1 Sec. 4
Neither House, during the Session of Congress, shall, without the Consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days, nor to any other Place than that in which the two Houses shall be sitting.”
It’s quite clear that it would have to be the Senate, not Bush, who could block the House from adjourning. The Senate has agreed to remain in Session, and the House has not protested. Ergo there is no “disagreement”.
“Article 2 Section 3
[The President] shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.”
Bush could insist that the House come back into Session to deal with his veto of the Defense Bill. But he can’t mandate that they deliberate faster or come to an agreement, or compel the attendance of any members. That’s the Right of the House. But compelling a special session is within his powers…that ENABLES the review of legislation or review of special events like disasters or war.
Furthermore it’s the Senate that confirms Presidential appointments. The Senate ARE in Session. The House and Senate were not in dispute about their times of adjournment. One didn’t object to the activities of the other. Thus Bush cannot “adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper”. The power of adjournment occurs only when there is a breach of amity between the two divisions of the Legislative branch, and where one may actually be blocking activity of the other by adjourning to prevent hearing legislation passed by the other body. The President can then direct and END to the period of adjournment. This is simply another way of stating his power to call Congress into Session.
The Federalist Papers stated that the President didn’t have the power of a King particularly in suspending Parliament at his whim.
Here’s the statement about the distinction between a King and a President under the Constitution as stated in the Federalist Papers.Federalist Papers #69
