According to McClatchy, the police at Benazir Bhutto’s rally abandoned their posts at some time before the shooting:
Police officers had frisked the 3,000 to 4,000 people attending Thursday’s rally when they entered the park, but as the speakers from Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party droned on, the police abandoned many of their posts. As she drove out through the gate, her main protection appeared to be her own bodyguards, who wore their usual white T-shirts inscribed: "Willing to die for Benazir."
[]
Bhutto’s party had complained repeatedly that the government provided her with inadequate security. She’d narrowly escaped another assassination attempt, at her homecoming parade Oct. 18 in Karachi, which left 140 dead.
CNN is reporting that she wasn’t killed by gunshot or shrapnel, but by hitting the sunroof of her car.
Whatever the case, Bhutto’s precise cause of death may never be known because of the failure to administer an autopsy. The procedure was not carried out because police and local authorities in Rawalpindi did not request one, according to IBNLive, but the government plans a formal investigation why this was the case.
Musharraf initially blamed her death on unnamed Islamic militants, but Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz told The Associated Press on Friday that "we have the evidence that al-Qaida and the Taliban were behind the suicide attack on Benazir Bhutto."
The DHS and FBI issued a bulletin yesterday saying that Al Quaeda was responsible for the killing. "The official characterized the bulletin as information sharing.’" Well gee thanks for sharing, but as tempting as it is to say "the bogeyman is back," it seems like the details of what happened are far from conclusive.
(h/t Betsy)
Update: Newsweek changes their headline from "Al Qaeda Killed Bhutto" to "Almost Certainly Al Qaeda." O-kay.

Sad but this is a country(pakastan )of 160 million with 68 nukes WHat will Bush do now ?
Hey jane.
Now it’s NOT an assassination? OK
NO autopsy, very interesting….
well da
well, ya see… al qaeda is the booshies best friends… of COURSE it’s al qaeda! why… who else could it be?
this was certainly predictable…
No, it was the sunroof that did her in. Seriously – I just heard that on the radio from an official from Pakistan. The sunroof must have been manufactured by al Qaeda…who is known to plan their dirty deeds for years in advance.
Duh!
Hey, where has Condi been these past two days? Out buying shoes without her cell phone?
where in the world is carmen san diego, and obl?
The bury people as fast as possible there.
i have a wicked headache today… i’m sure al qaeda caused it.
and GOLDSTEIN?????
There is a need to cite AQ so as to promote WOT meme. Taliban are as
likely as is the army or Mush himself. Domestic US spin needs emerge quickly even after we set it all in motion.
Ding.
Well…one of my immediate thoughts was an autopsy if done would have been one of those chaotic, compromised kinda jobs even if their culture allowed it. However, to claim a bump on the head is the cause seems incredibly over the top.
I hope someone produces pictures soon. Who was in the car with her at the time?
me too i blame julie-annie
Isn’t there a nursery rhyme about this:
Bumped his head when he went to bed
And couldn’t get up in the morning.
Just like V for Vendetta.
They’d have had to do an extremely fast autopsy, given that Muslim custom is burial within a day after death.
I also understand that the eyewitness accounts are not very good, because it happened so quickly.
the fix is in for sure!!!!
The Pakistani government is frantically manufacturing fake AQ videos. When is the world gonna wake up?
No, it was the sunroof that did her in. Seriously – I just heard that on
ShaShaMae
the radio from an official from Pakistan. The sunroof must have been manufactured by al Qaeda…who is known to plan their dirty deeds for years in advance.

Hey, where has Condi been these past two days? Out buying shoes without her cell phone?
Now Nader will have ti sue the car company
CNN, at the same time they’re reporting “bumped on the head” as the cause of death, is running a video on which gunshots can be heard while Bhutto’s head is clearly outside the vehicle. Men at the back of the vehicle can be seen flinching and ducking at the sound of the shots – and then the video stops.
well lets say they could rule out natural causes, like Ken Lay/
What is the procedure in Pakistan for an autopsy if someone dies and they don’t know the cause of death? Are there no circumstances where an autopsy is warranted?
CNN..Bhutto’s husband didn’t want an autopsy…
Did anyone else see the Pakistani- looked like the Fire department- washing down the street which had debris from the blast all over it?
Washing down the crime scene.
Why is it whenever there is an event such as this that the crime scene is always “compromised”?
Just askin
they could do a speedy one
BREAKING
Department of Homeland Security tracking rogue sunroofs…
The procedure is to not do one so all the Firepups can freak out!
The terrorist was a sunroof lever?
They did an autopsy/post mortem on Dodi Fayed. He was buried before the 24 hour timeframe.
that is thing that pissed me off the most about the world trade center…all metal shipped to china
because the fix is on!
hahahahaha
your a pisser!
Bodies dumped with the rubble in the garbage dumps in Jersey, too.
never heard about that from the liberal media
jeeeeeze louise
Prediction: Someone will use this post to firmly establish the Clinton-AQ connection.
sunroof did it. case closed. no further investigation needed. I’m surprised someone didn’t insist on cremation.
They have actually dug up parts of the West Side highway & extracted body frangments from the pavement. They were not on the surface, but mixed in, as WTC rubble was used to repair the road.
or that blogs are insensitive
They searched for what they could find, which wasn’t much…then they just bulldozed everything into dump trucks and carted it all off…
BREAKING
Department of Homeland Security tracking rogue sunroofs…
lol. Report continues: “Be on the lookout for a very tall, bearded Saudi man, attached to a dialysis machine, who is not only selling these sunroofs, but is criminally over-charging for them, bilking unsuspecting consumers…”
and why have we not read about this in the NYT?
Did anyone else see the Pakistani- looked like the Fire department- washing down the street which had debris from the blast all over it?

And the guy telling the firerman you missed a-spot .
This is the sloppy’est cover up i’ve even seen ,, not even a second rate B movie would stoop that low
Now we need to sent them a nother 10 billion dollars quick
Gasp.
I really don’t get the head bump thing. Other than allowing the family to sue Citroen or somebody, I don’t see where it does anything.
Coming soon – the Warren Commission II
You mean to tell me that with all of our enhanced eavesdropping capabilities we have given the NSA and Bush, they were unable to let Pakistan and Bhutto know about an AL Qeada plan? Boy Al Qaeda must have some very sophisticated and technologically advanced apparatus up in the caves. Wow. We better give up more of our liberty’s to help defeat them. /snark
too bad the writers are on strike
i vote for war on war off to go to hollywood
Fox news stll claiming AQ did it………wtf!
DNA is junk science/
Don’t remember where I heard it at the time (summer 06?). It might have been in NYT. Or maybe on wnyc.
and 9/11…they were listening since Jan 01
Shock waves killed her…… a fratured skull now on Fox!!!!
“Well, we’ve never done this before. But seeing as it’s special circumstances and all, he says I can knock a hundred dollars off that Trucoat.”
CNN too.
ok im now LOLing

Oh, thanks! *blushes*

What always gets me about these suicide bombings is the tough talk that comes afterwards about “bringing the murderer(s) to justice.” Ummm, the murderer is dead. But keep talking Rudy.
Ooookay…I’m a-going to lunch. Laters!
yea the chickenhawks are such great talkerzzzzzzzzzz
The photographer witnessed her “collapse” into the car after he heard the 3 shots. He then picked up his camera again, and “then” he recorded the explosion. So, she was already “felled” by the gunshots, “before” the explosion.
So, Pakistan and CNN and Fox can all go straight to %*&*%(^%(&^!!!
Here’s the story. Fragments found in manhole, new search was begun on west service road.
I’d guess the NSA just tip thier hand … But could not get it right on 911.
Blaming AQ reminds me of a song Rita Hayworth sang in a saucy role, “Put the Blame on Mame Boys”. Yep, whatever happens put the blame on AQ boys.
ditto………….
forgive me NYT…so who were the fragments?…Atta etal
if the foo shitz wear it
I’d be interested in knowing whether or not any of the other occupants of Bhutto’s vehicle were injured by the explosion…
I know it’s hard to believe anything these guys say, but it seems logical to me that it would be Al Qaeda. The real crime is that Al Qaeda is stronger than ever and we’re stuck in Iraq, and this is proof.
Whether it was Al Qaeda per se, or some affiliated terror group, it was still Islamo-Fascist Terrorism…that needs to be clamped down by the military in Pakistan…and maybe here.
searching more. back in a bit.
RE: Autopsies.
Contrary to what you see on “Law and Order” and “CSI”, a lot of people don’t like autopsies, and medical people usually don’t push them very hard, even when they’re clearly warranted. I have no idea what the protocol is in Pakistan, but if the family doesn’t want one, I would imagine that they’d just release the body to the family without doing one.
That being said, let me get on my soap box: If someone in your family dies, and there is ANY question about what happened to them, you should request an autopsy. Autopsies will pick up a significant finding (i.e. some key piece of information that wasn’t found while the person was alive) about half the time. In the case of genetic diseases, that means that other family members may be diagnosed earlier than they would have otherwise.
“What makes this an exceptionally delicate issue is that more than 40 percent of the victims’ family members are still awaiting word, five years later, that something of their relatives has been recovered. To date, the chief medical examiner has been unable to identify the remains of 1,151 of the 2,749 victims of the attack.”
Under Bush’s Watch.
Also, I wonder how many bodies were never accounted for after Katrina…I always thought that they wanted to keep the public number under the 9/11 death toll.
Thanks for finding the story bjnts. My memory of the details were somewhat inaccurate.
absolutely true bastards!!!!!!!!!!!
At the risk of sounding crass, Benazir Bhutto would have been number one of the list of public figures most likely to be assassinated in the next 24 hours. She was killed at a large, public rally. Why isn’t there video? I would have thought that several networks would have had cameras on her 24/7. At the very least, they would have had video on her any time she was in public. Why haven’t we seen anything?
ditto
and RUDY was a sukkkkkkkkkkkkky cop imo
Let’s just get this straight once and for all. Fascism is a system of government where the government is run by corporations, rather than the other way around. Al Qaeda is not a government, and it is not a government run by corporations.
no it is called “absolutisms.” The same type of dysfucntion that makes a wack job walk into an abortion clinic and kill innocent people in the name of GOD, in America! Old fasshion religious intolerance, the type that enabled the religious leaders to kill Christ, while PP washed his hands of the matter…………..
How sad.
I just found out about this today as I have been in bed the last 36 hours with food poisoning from a frozen seafood and pasta surprise.
I hear calls for the elections to go forward.
Sure, now that the opposition is literally in the ground, why not?
I think you missed by a month. You.are.amazing.

Regardless of who was guilty and of what happens in Pakistan we will hear the talking points load and clear:
- 9/11
- Al Qaeda
- Bhutto WAS asssinated by Al Qaeda
- 9/11 (namy times)
- Only a Republican can be President in these times
It seems old and tired, but it’s worked several times and we can be sure they will try it again. After all the Republicans are probably saying: “we have nothing to fear but that the people loose fear itself?”
And the beauty of the sunroof lever explanation is, it’s not a security issue. There was no deficient security, the security was just frackin’ dandy…. The lever did it.
Remembering that Seymour Hersch had fingered Ejaz (Ijaz) Shah, the guy in charge of Mm. Bhutto’s security yesterday, some time ago as being a pivotally nefarious character, I came up with this from Asia Times, back in early 2005. It ties Bhutto’s security chief in with the arrest of Daniel Pearl’s murderer, with Mohammed Atta, the ISI’s financial involvement with 9/11, and terrorism in India:
Eyebrows were raised when Sheikh surrendered to an Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) official, Brigadier Ejaz Shah, in Lahore and not to the police. Shah was known to be a protege of generals Musharraf and Aziz Khan.
Shah’s subsequent nomination as high commissioner to Australia was rejected by the Australian government. He is now Pakistan’s ambassador to Indonesia. What is interesting to note is that ambassadorial appointments are normally given in Pakistan to retired generals and not low-ranking ISI brigadiers.
It has now been reported by a respected Lahore-based Pakistani journalist, Amir Mir, continues Parthasarathi, that during his interrogation by US and Pakistani investigators, Sheikh revealed that he had been on the payroll of the Pakistani ISI and that the terrorist attacks on the Kashmir State Assembly building in October 2001 and the Indian parliament in December 2001 had the backing of the ISI.
Amir Mir has also confirmed that Sheikh transferred a sum of $100,000 that had been provided to him by then ISI chief General Mahmood Ahmed to Mohammad Atta – the leader of the hijackers involved in the September 11 terrorist attacks. He also alleges that the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) believes that Omar met Atta during one of his visits to Kandahar and knew of his plans for the September 11 terrorist strikes. On October 9, 2001, the Pakistani daily Dawn reported that the ISI director general, Lieutenant-General Mahmoud Ahmed, was fired after FBI investigators established a link between him and a $100,000 wire transfer to Atta in the summer of 2000. This report was also carried by the Wall Street Journal. Parthasarathi’s comment: “There does appear to be a conspiracy of silence on this score, because Syed Omar Sheikh is evidently a man who knows too much and can embarrass both the Musharraf dispensation and the Bush administration.”
yes, Under Bush’s Watch.
I think one of my comments ended up in liberty lees former spot.
Gotta go shower now.

Wait, I forget, what is the terrorism color code for a terrorist sunroof. Autopsy, they don’t need no f*ckin autopsy, single bullet Arlen is there to confirm the cause of death.
ya know they get the GREAT big explosion…and blame HER DEATH on Bhutto HERSELF
BRILLANT
killer sunroofs roam the countryside…
CNN…”a crucial ally in the ’so-called’ War on Terror”.
That was an interesting emphasis by CNN….
but ,but, how are they gonna blame this on Iran?
truth by accident
Pakistani Ambassador (I think) on CNN: “Pakistan must stay on the road to democracy…elections must go on”…you know, a one candidate election. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
EDWARDS should tar and feather rudys bony ass to this
They have to blame AQ, because they are about to send troops into Pakistan.
Iran calls to Darth
Explain exactly how your liberty is “at the hand of Muslim gunmen.” I’ve never faced such a circumstance, however, I am losing liberties daily to my own damn govt.
bekons is better
uh oh somebody missed their meds today
Those are NOT talking points. I do not see any Dem I would trust in the White House to deal with Al Qaeda, Iran, North Korea, Syria, China or any other potential enemy of the USA. The world has become a very dangerous place since Clinton allowed militant Al Qaeda and Osama to bomb our embassies and warships in the 90s…
Speaking of opposition, can anyone verify whereabouts or safety of Imran Khan ?
US “official” seconding Pakistan’s claims that AQ did it….(made her bang her head on her sunroof; thereby, committing suicide, accidentally…or…something…)
somewhat OT; please forgive me:
…is anyone here aware of the story about Bhutto claiming in an interview with David Frost a few months ago that Bin Laden was murdered by Omar Sheikh? it’s a fairly amazing claim, and I suspect that it’s been addressed/dismissed elsewhere. if anybody here could give me the shortform explanation, I’d really appreciate it. thanks!
I heard that he was released a couple of weeks ago.
Here is the video (scroll down) of Bhutto/Frost interview:

LS–yah, it’s a YouTube that’s been linked on DU/DKos and others. my internets are wonky lately, and it’s not loading, though.
Shorter Administration: “Twas Al Qaeda, and even if not, certainly the Democrats were involved.”
la times
As she races through Iowa in the days before next week’s caucuses, Hillary Clinton is taking few chances. She tells crowds that it’s their turn to “pick a president,’’ but over the last two days she has not invited them to ask her any questions.
Before the brief Christmas break, the New York senator had been setting aside time after campaign speeches to hear from the audience. Now when she’s done speaking, her theme songs blare from loudspeakers, preventing any kind of public Q&A.
She was no more inviting when a television reporter approached her after a rally on Thursday and asked if she was “moved’’ by Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. Clinton turned away without answering.
She has promised HRC that she will keep out of the limelight until after the Iowa Caucus. You know she can’t be out there competing for airtime with the Queen Dem.
Big Edwards Iowa speech today: fight for change…excerpt over at Josh’s place
shamefull
yes…more of this please!!!
I just have to mention the fact that the night before Bhutto was assassinated I watched the movie “Z.” If you’re familiar with the film you’ll agree that the timing is freaky.
I just listened to it. She very precisely said …the man who murdered Osama Bin Laden…
Now, that would surely provide a motive to kill her by those who wish to keep the boogeyman alive for their purposes…not to mention all the other reasons…JMHO
People have been saying for years that OBL was killed in 2002.
LS–the only explanation that I’ve seen ANYWHERE is that it was a slip of the tongue, that she’d meant to say “Daniel Pearl”. which, frankly, I don’t understand.
I kept that in mind while watching it, but I do not think that was a slip of the tongue at all. It was slow and deliberate. She was not a person to make mistakes like that. Omar Sheik could have murdered a lot of people, including Bin Laden and Pearl.
There is no question that Pakistan had something to do with the attacks on 9/11…Pakistan even fired a General…the one that wired the $100,000 to Atta. This is of record.
this was a woman well acquainted with being interviewed, and it just seems inconceivable to me that she could misspeak so profoundly.
Hartmann is addressing it right now. should be interesting.
so…. nobody thinks it’s odoriferously fishy that al jazeera is broadcasting a new audio tape of Osama today wherein he is still talkin about 9/11?? i must be nuts then.
bigBob – the less Bush does is better for all concerned, particularly Pakistan.
uh i posted this some time ago as well. saw it on cspan this am i think??
don’t see any advantage to her saying this if not true.
nor do I see any reason she wouldn’t correct herself. or that Frost didn’t. or that there has been no comment.
Musharraf thought OBL was dead back in 2002:
http://www.welfarestate.com/bi…..n-dead.txt
this is it, the motive behind her assassination. given a broader media platform, which she surely would have had if elected, she would have debunked notion osama was still alive, undercut the neos and warhawks, just a thought. seems like the most reasonable one to me.
It stinks as usual.
yes, it stinks and i’m not gonna eat it.
god, I hate feeling as paranoid as I do right now…
It is notable that she made that statement so recently; rather than over the 8 years she was in exile. If she meant what she said, which I believe she did, it certainly was another nail in her coffin so to speak…she had many.
LS–but don’t you think that even saying something like this is hyper-newsworthy? certainly, there were many possibilities as to why she was assassinated, but this seems major enough to take center stage…
This is interesting too:
“According to these sources, the suicide bomber or bombers managed to penetrate the security cordon of the Police and IB officers without being frisked, but could not penetrate the inner cordon of security guards of the PPPP. When they stopped them, they blew themselves up at a distance from her vehicle. At the time of the explosion, she was not standing on top of the vehicle. She had gone inside the vehicle to rest for a while. This seems to have contributed to her miraculous escape. Had she been standing on top she might have been injured, if not killed.“
This is a description of the first assassination attempt!!
Also, from the same article:
“Brig. Ejaz Shah has been strongly criticised by Mrs. Benazir and her supporters for the security failure and they have demanded his removal and arrest. When he was in the ISI, he used to be the handling officer of Osama bin Laden and Mulla Omar, the Amir of the Taliban.”
http://www.southasiaanalysis.o…..r2417.html
My dislike of corporations is based on Jefferson’s statements. He feared the rise of a “corporate aristocacy” that would work continually to usurp the rule of law in the name of endless profit. Remember, he dealt with a King and his corporate cohorts in colonial crime! This was in part a reason for the “estate tax,” in America, a redisribution of wealth by government to serve the preservation of the republic. Thats what the American Liberty League feared with FDR’s New Deal. But then we had WWII and memebers of the “American Liberty League, got rich. Today we have “Executive Oil” runing the show. And boy do we pay for our energy. Maybe what “America,” the people need is a successful trial lawyer, representing the interests of the people, rather than corporate interests, as President. I’m sure Jefferson would agree, given his experience with a King and his corporate cohorts in colonial crime. I have asked myself this question many times. John Edwards claims to be that man, and I have taken notice, but can he do it?
I do, however, she is dead, and it will be spun by the MSM as a mistake, because they can’t even ask her if she meant what she said…
There were a myriad of reasons to kill her by a myriad of suspects.
HRC wants an international, independent investigation. Not the US, because of a lack of credibilty for other reasons…CNN right now.
(CNN) — The Pakistani government said Friday that a Taliban leader from Afghanistan was behind the plot to assassinate…
See the phrasing change? Yesterday it was definitely an assassination. Today, just a plot to assassinate. *sigh*
HRC’s comments bear examination…
I’d be interested in Mr. Frost’s take on this.
I think someone needs to talk to the BBC and Frost. like, yesterday…
Tomorrow: Bhutto slipped while waving to her dedicated fans, hit her head, and died. What appeared to be gun shots and an explosion were merely firecrackers celebrating her wonderful rally. Move along nothing to see here….
GeorgeSimian @ 72 – dobt that in the heartland of the military establishment – look at ISI who have served as AQ advisers.
Libertylee @ 73 – there is no such thing as Islamo-fascist terrorism. There is fascism aided and abetted by corporate wealth like in your country. There is Islam, a religion practised by over 1m people. There are terrorists of various persuasions, including those that would rather terrorise Terra to destroy the terra firma for all our children. That last category are your countrymen/women.
Me too. I’ll go look to see if he made a statement.
If this is not YOUR country as well, you have no business criticizing mine. We have a right to defend ourselves from all enemies foreign and domestic. It is the President’s right to take whatever action he deems necessary to accomplish that goal.
When is some democratic candidate going to start pointing out how bush and the GOP capitalize on bloody chaos, and use it as an excuse to create, or to help create, more bloody chaos, which they can then use as an excuse to create more bloody chaos, which they can then use as an excuse to create…
LS@153, I know snark when I read it, but to anyone who buys into this Pakistani variation of the Kennedy “magic bullet” scenario, your problem is that the Dr. trying to save her have stated flatly that she was shot at least twice, with the bullet that killed her hitting her spinal chord in her neck, and then exiting from her head.
In the face of that, why on earth would a Pakistan General go on the air with that bullshit statement about her striking her head on a lever?
I think everything is up in the air in Pakistan, and just like with bushCo, there have been so MANY lies told about what has BEEN going on that a few more won’t matter; they hope.
The clusterf*ck rolls on like a Dust storm….
It was snark. Of course she was shot, collapsed into the car, and then there was an explosion. Here’s the photographer who witnessed it:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/…..index.html
Libertylee @ 156 – excuse me, I have every right as I see fit – it is you who have no business telling anyone what to think. Do you think at all? Your kind is not appreciated around the world. We just think you are the barbarians that despoiled the inheritance of the Emancipation that never emanated among white US Americans. Go build your wall to shut off the world and you know what – it will do the world a great favour.
Shot in spinal chord and neck, marksman type of shot. Expert hit. no doubt about it. SOP. Professional job.
In an interview with David Frost, Bhutto explained that these groups were being used by those inside the government to create unrest and fear.
She named three people she thought were behind it and said she had told Musharref that she intended to get Scotland Yard’s help with an investigation…
She also said one of the people she suspected aided Omar Sheikh, “the man who murdered Osama bin Laden”.

thank you for this link, powerful reportage of the murder. he should be commended for the photos. very moving.

From the Quran: 28:55, And when they hear vain talk, they turn away from it and say: “To us our deeds, and to you yours; peace be to you: we do not seek out the ignorant.” Anyone come to mind?
There is also “DON’T Feed the Trolls”.
LOL
No investigations? MSM, the gullianies, their gov’t, our gov’t…”Al Qaeda did it” nothing to think about here…move along…
The Quran is so much more civilized. That commenter must be sounding new depths in ignorance in their quest to excell in life. Sad that.
kittykitty @ 164 – I stand corrected , thank you. The last estimate I have seen is 1.2bn peoples who practice Islam, the majority live in Indonesia, followed by India, the latter is a secular democracy, has been for the last 60 years where Muslims comprise under 20% of the population.
One can almost hear Bush to Condi, “Listen, tell Pervez to let her back in, we’ll set up a front with her in control but with him pulling the strings. If anything happens to her, we blame Al Quaeda and we scream ‘War on Terror’ while we prop Pervez up some more.
Congress won’t dare challenge us if we do it like this. Bhutto lives, we win; Bhutto dies, we win. Either way, we win because Pervez becomes further indebted to us.”
Were it he understood the lesson of Revolutions that he might have learned in school or appreciated in the events of 9.11: “One does not disenfranchise a people in their own land without it coming back to bite one in the ass.”
The next bite may be a big one.
Amilius, I think you are exactly correct. Since the assassination, Bush-bots have been dropping Q-bombs over and over every time they get in front of a camera
I think it is way too premature to be definitively be blaming this on Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Its very possible they did do it but the pakistani government coming out and claiming to have ‘irrefutable evidence’ linking the attack, just a DAY after it happens, raises serious questions about the seriousness with which it is investigating this.
The Pakistani government failed to find anything definitive in the investigation into the Karachi bomb blast in OCtober that killed 140 people in over TWO months. Yet a day after the assassination, the details of which are still unclear and lost in the conflicting reports coming out, it claims to have “wholly resolved” the case..I dont buy it.
I think the Bush admin is still put in a tight spot by Bhutto’s assassination. Although it allows them to scream Al Qaeda and war on terror, for sure, I believe their best bet was to have Bhutto broke a power-sharing deal with Musharraf.
The truth is that Musharraf has grown really unpopular in Pakistan and abroad because of his continuing dictatorial measures. A lot of questions have also been recently raised about whether he has taken the U.S. for a ride by mis-spending a big proportion of the $5 billion of aid Pakistan has received since 9/11.
Bhutto becoming Prime Minister would have deflected some of the growing pressure on the U.S. to stop unconditionally backing Musharraf.
Here’s what John Moore of Getty said about Bhutto’s death and the way she died:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/…..index.html
Bullets hit her and she sank into the truck before the explosion happened.
Hey, if the next prez made him Sec. of Def. Ralph could just bomb the car factory. Yeah! LOL
At least here in America we have safe sunroofs because Ralph would accept nothing less.
Frankly, they had no choice. If they admit Huckabee was right (his American apology statement), then it means war between ALL of Pakistan and the U.S. and if they said it was the government, then Musharraf would likely be ousted and if Musharraf said it was Al Qaeda, then the thin ice he’s standing on would fall through (and him with it). He had no choice, but to say it was the car that done it. The press just helped steno teh story right out to the public. Gotta propel the propaganda dontcha know.
We all hate sunroofs, right? Hey, stop the booing.
It’s this crazy surreal Bush era. It’s just amazing.
Didn’t ya forget to capitalize “Lee”?
On your point: You say you don’t see any Dem you would ‘trust’. That may be, but it doesn’t mean some of the Dem candidates wouldn’t be good presidents. I know I wasn’t too crazy about seeing Reagan become president for at least that reason. Yes, I know he was going to be surrounded by better men. But, a president has to make fundamental decisions and only that person is authorized to do it. Everyone else follows that direction. Reagan got us into some messes with the Iran-Contra deal and the El Salvadoran death squads and the HUD mess and the S&L thievery and then said he couldn’t remember it. Why do you only trust that kind of person?
The public has always varied in support for Dems and Repubs and a lot of that was the times we live in and the candidates. This year we are trying to survive a really horrendous Republican administration and the public need a Democratic president. The only question is which one.
Among the Democratic presidents there are intelligent people who smile and laugh and seem to be well-rounded human beings and who seem to have a good deal of experience (at this and that) and who are sincerely trying to show they should be president. That’s a good start. We have a choice.
Why you don’t trust at least 3 or 4 of them is a mystery to me. Maybe you should ask yourself what qualities a president should have and then look at the candidates to find one (or two) that match. Is it looks and voice? Do they have to look presidential? Is it experience in politics, business or some other big enterprise? Is it wealth? Do they have to be Rich? Do they have to be from humble circumstances (as Reagan was)? Find the qualities you value and match them up. I’m certain you’ll find someone who fits pretty well.
One catch: don’t look too hard at the issues. If you do you’ll just get bogged down in politics you don’t agree much with.
But, there are some good people in the bunch and if you look a little you’ll find somebody you can, at least, trust with defending the nation.
Good luck!
As a private individual each of us has the ‘right’ to defend America. No President has a ‘right’ to do anything. The Constitution assigns Powers and Duties to the presidency. Those Duties include executing the laws of the land and upholding the oath of office.
Nowhere in there is ‘whatever action he deems necessary’.
It is the job of Congress and the President to devise a system of laws which give the personnel, materiel and Duties to the presidency, so that whomever sits in that seat can do the job as well as needed. They are given a lot of leeway, but it’s not infinite.
Perhaps the most latitude is with regard to the nation’s ‘foreign policy’. But, even that isn’t infinitely broad.
Also, as Commander-in-Chief he isn’t free to do just anything. He is the commander just as a CEO runs a corporation — neither is free to do things illegal.
Many Republicans claim they want the government to uphold the Constitution and that Dems don’t. Well, there have been some instances of that, but the worst abuser is this Bush administration. They don’t seem to recognize much of the Law at all. It’s really tragic.
Y’know, I’ve got quite a few friends who feel the same way. Some of them are – gasp – Muslim. (and some, Iranian)
That’s what bothers me about the Obama and Axelrod responses. Immediately blaming al-Qaeda or “terrorists” (Obama’s response) was immature–at best.
Also: people seem to think that if Musharraf himself doesn’t benefit from it, then somehow no military or intelligence official would. Why does everyone seem think it’s only about Musharraf? Pakistani intelligence is notorious for its support of extremism.
Bush and Rice undoubtedly had pleas from Bhutto to intervene with Musharaff for the promised security. But they evidently decided to do nothing; you do wonder how these people look at themselves in the mirror.
