No?
Well that puts you ahead of "the Dean", for Grandpa Broder once again forgot that those things existed. I’m sure it’s just a simple misunderstanding.
For in Broder’s world this…
Many other "victories" credited to the House were later undone by the Senate, including all the restrictions on the deployment of troops in Iraq. And on 46 of the measures passed by the House, more than one-third of the total, the notation is added, "The president has threatened to veto," or has already vetoed, the bill.
…is TOTALLY Nancy Pelosi’s fault. It’s completely not the doing of his non-bouncing boy, who is the soul of compromise apparently to Davey.
There are many problems we Democrats have with our own Congressional delegation; but they pale in comparison to the other side of the aisle and the White House. But in Broder’s world, if they just did what Bush wanted, without all the chattering, he’d be one contended, grossly overpaid, man.

News NOT sounding good from Pakistan…MSNBC claiming Bhutto seriously injured.
Sorry for the OT but it looks like Bhutto was hit in the attack in Pakistan. The balloon may go up.
Greg Palast & Ecuador are subject on democracynow.org this morning.
‘morning all – coffee is brewing…
no, the news from Pakistan is not good.
Now we know what all that extra money for Pakistan was for.
Broder accuses the House Democrats of attempting to “micromanage” the war in Iraq. Saying “Get out!!” is actually macromanaging.
The Times should replace Broder with Greenwald. Not that I want to micromanage their last-century columnist roster.
For those wanting more on the Bhutto story.
Explosion heard at Bhutto rally
Sorry for the OT but this was too funny.
I wonder, did their skirts get in the way?
msnbc reports bhutto has died
Bhutto reported killed.
I hope the reports are premature, but if it’s true, may she now rest in peace.
CNN.com says Bhutto died after being shot. MSNBC says injured.
Mika seems to be playing it pretty carefully on waiting for reports before putting it out; hospital sources now supposedly confirming death.
Per CNN.com:
the republicans in congress have been incredibly obstructionist -but i don’t think it’s true that they have filibustered that often. probably only because the dems in the senate haven’t made them – but still…
These are serious times — we need serious leaders, not craven war criminals who put the interests of their war profiteer buddies before the interests of American and global citizens.
Guardian reports Bhutto killed.
democracy now! is running the dawn feed
Concern today for the people of Pakistan and that region. BBC reports Bhutto killed.
per dawn via democracy now!
interior ministry confirmed bhutto was seriously injured
dawn reporters at the hospital report that hospital sources are confirming that she has died.
live report now from pakistan.
no official confirmation.
hospital sources are reporting injury was a bullet wound (although reports at the scene report a suicide bomber), she was taken immediately to emergency surgery.
hospital is now being cordoned off by security forces.
end of live feed from dawn news via democracy now!
This is about as bad (and unsurprising) a bit of news as we could get.
MSNBC interviewed a witness that said Bhutto was about 50 yards away from the blast. Immediately after the explosion, gunfire erupted.
Musharraf????
amy goodman says that live feed from dawn news (pakistan) will continue at democracy now! after short break.
twolf1 – thanks for the msnbc info. no cable tv here.
Coming soon! Civil war in Pakistan, sponsored by Wal Mart and AIPAC!
Am I the only one who thinks this is a terribly ominous development?
link?
yes.
reminder for those who’ve read naomi klein: shock therapy
http://www.democracynow.org/
“At 6:16 p.m. she expired,” said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto’s party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was taken after the attack.
A senior military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment, confirmed that Bhutto had died.

thanks…
Albright on msnbc giving analysis of what this might mean…
AP says “killed”.
reporter on scene says she was shot in the neck and head and then the guy blew himself up.
democracy now! – no live dawn feed. interviewing Zia Mian for analysis.

sadaf aziz
i am officially resigning from the human race…humans suck muchly!
more black ops from our lovely country
This is a one time post to MHS. I guess your ides of the soldiers taking a CHristmas Break form the war didn’t get to this fellow. IT is on your head and habds and all of your scyncophants there as well.
Bush lied, people died. You flit your egos around and people die, too. Until all our troops are home safe there is only one issue. How many writers, union members, and Democrat opperatives lost their lives on Christmas Day a uniform that defends your right to be a babling airhead?
http://gregmitchellwriter.blog…..-iraq.html
I can read, so don’t bother, he “died of an undetermined cause in a ‘noncombat environment’ in Baghdad.” But with this Administration and this war, who knows. Tillman was a hero right? But the inalterable fact is that he dies in Iraq when he could have been at home with his family.
It is on your hands as well as Bush. Hope you like the company.
So long again.
repearwo
I’m not sure I understand how her death benefits us in any way…
Tillman was a hero right? But the inalterable fact is that he dies in Iraq when he could have been at home with his family.
Tillman died in Afaghanistan, not Iraq………get facts straight!
Not to get too far into conspiracy stuff, but she was centrist & perhaps not under U.S. control.
onyourhands,
who is MHS?
and didn’t Tillman die in Afghanistan?
chimpie HEARTS mooooshy teh mucho
how convienent for musharraf?
Nice Post Attaturk. I never realized that Broder was such a partisan butt kissing hack for the GOP. Interesting that the only positive mention of the Democrats was their 40% rating as opposed to the 32% GOP ratings. I wonder why he never elaborated further on that interesting statistic? Nope can’t go were reality takes you. It must be the Dems fault. Pathetic. And he calls himself a journalist?
BIG SHOT across the bow to you who want fair elections
Do you think he’ll get off his bicycle long enough to learn the news?
While I realize that the bushies love chaos, having Pakistan in complete rebellion doesn’t seem to advance the “control” theory…
no shit!
this world IS so very fukkkkkkked
Gives Halliburton another country to reconstruct. /snark
Moooshy tried to kill her when she first came back. It was probably inevitable, just before their elections…
she survives the blast and gets hit by two bullets????
it is CONTROLLED chaos imo
FEAR BABY FEAR
http://ecosyn.us/Bush-Hitler/B….._Arms.html
Now they are saying she was shot first, then the bomb went off.
Any guesses that Chimpy won’t cut short his holiday vacation to pay attention to the situation in Pakistan?
im just extremely sad and dissheartened …is there any hope that just plain decency can prevail?
JJ – first she was shot, then blown up…
It was an effective plan, cause chaos and then the sniper takes her out.
Last time she survived the blast remember.
smells already…………
no,and the PIN/Figure head would not lend any pith to the situation
OK, so I had the timeline backkwards
Like it some how makes a fucking difference whether she was shot first or not.
blackwater?
talking head on MSNBC said that the shooter was also the suicide bomber. Sounds way to “neat” to me. And a bit too quick to come to that conclusion.
give youself a break :)
Pakistan a country with Nukes, Al Quieda, Ossama, an unelected unpopular leader who locks up lawyers rather than terrorists. A country we gave a lot of aid to that instead of being used to help the economy and or make our puppet more popular instead wet to make the generals rich.
Now a woman popular enough to get elected in a Muslim country has been killed. I expect a civil war.
Do we have any plans to secure Pakistan’s nukes before Al Quieda gets them? Or is Bush still focused on Iran getting nukes in 5 or 10 years?
I wonder if Israel will order an airstrike?
yup!
You raise the same question I had. There is no question this was a black-ops type operation. More of the Bush administration promoting “Freedom and Democracy” in the middle east. Any guess as to whom will be blamed – AL Qaeda extremists of course.
i dont believe any of this scenario…cept for the nukes exist
Not to fear. Michael O’Hanlon has the perfect plan for the U.S. to invake Pakistan to secure the nukes. Off to find the link.
this stinks………
musharraf let it happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
who can oppose them and survive?
like every other damn coincidence
Here’s the link to O’Hanlon’s op ed re Pak’s nukes (Frederick Kagan is joint author)
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11…..kagan.html
You don’t believe me, the news media, the story about how she was killed?
And if Musharaff let it happen – the US let it happen. Because as Emperor Bush proclaims – he is one of our greatest allies in the War on Terror.
In spite of instincts, lets wait to see how this unfolds…
what better way to silence opposition kill it!
MSNBC— windows being blown out at hospital (?)
and now we get Mrs. Greenspan “analyzing”
OY
Nic Robertson on CNN predicting marshall law.
eCAHNomics December 27th, 2007 at 6:02 am – 51
That was one of my first thoughts. ;-(
that seems inevitable. Followed by what?
Some cliche about fiddling & burning seems appropriate.
OT but, you do realize that the YouTube is totally en Espagnol??
I only forecast the economy, not Pak’s politics!
Am I wrong?
Dont presidents come out and speak after events like this immediately?
“A party security adviser said Bhutto was shot in the neck and chest as she got into her vehicle, then the gunman blew himself up.”
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22406555/
msnbc keeps updating story at this link (crediting AP & Reuters for contributions)
a sad day for the world
prolley too hung over to talk…
rhetorical question . . . not meant at you.
What a mess! Somehow I don’t envision Condi lending the situation any help.
As I recall she was encouraged to return when she did by the Bush gov as their candidate. Or, was it so that Musharaff (or was it the CIA?) could kill her? Remember as soon as she has arrived, Musharaff shuts down the judiciary and the opposition’s ability to rally in a set of actions that seemed to have Cheney written all over it. And, now with the nukes at play here, who knows but what the neocons in the admin will now have the popular ammo (supported by AIP*C and India) to wage a new war (hence more armament sales and more U.S. debt to wipe out any hint of social programs here).
Remember how the CIA offed the populist Lumumba in Congo and what a real peach they put in his place, Mobutu, who drove the country further into the ground but filled the pockets of himself and the rich internationalists (Pat Robertson’s diamond mining among these).
This president needs to be programmed first and the IT dept. thought it was taking the day off.
musharraf needs not share power now!!!
Oh I know your Q was rhetorical. Robertson didn’t have a prognostication about what would follow marshall law.
Condi will tell the Pak’s that the MUST get their act together, verbally shaking her finger at them.
I would rather the drunken, inarticulate chimp say nothing, but you know he’ll be all “terrrrrrrrrist” and “freeeeeeeeeeeedom” once he awakens from his stupor.
Folks, it’s MARTIAL law.
He is embarrassing!
How about “peddling and burning”?
Thanks for that. I knew I had it wrok but suffered from brain blockage.
OT the Inky printed Wexler et al’s Impeach Cheney op ed. today.
I know it’s still early, with conflicting reports of what happened being reported around. However, Mrs. FGD and I were thinking this morning that the number of hard questions asked by the White House
stenographyPress Corps about our relationship with Musharrif (and the billions we’re sending his way) will be, oh, exactly ZERO.Indeed, another sad day for democracy.
Cheney must have been up all night, pacing, waiting for that telephone call…
CSPAN Washington Journal is changing their coverage to Bhutto now
OK we’re now back to all terra all the time. It is a dangerous world and we need a big daddy to take care of us. MS… saying this will help Ghouliani.
Scarborough predicting this will help Ghouliani
Guiliani is first out with a statement. Fight the terrorists.
Prepare America to defend our constitution and democracy now
The plan seems to rely on moderates, who probably are angry at the General and suspect him and us of having a hand in Bhutto death. The General locked up the lawyers and other moderates.
When he should have been locking up Al Quieda. I think the General has no base of support now but the military.
We will have to go in despite what the Pakistani army wants, they know this and they know that they have to restore order quick. To do so they will have to move fast and arrest everyone even suspected of being Al Quieda, or a moderate (moderates are the type to vote for a woman) and Bhutto’s supporters certainly will suspect the General.
I think that they can contain this in the short term since they likely planned it and prepared for it. But in the long term all the arrests will just make things worse.
what an asshole!!!!!!!!!!
Scarborough sounds positively happy about “terror! terror! terror!”
Joe Scar making me want to puke. Can someone put a cork in him please? channel now changed to CSPAN
Guiliani is first out with a statement.
Probably knew in advance the hit was coming…
joe scar says – every gooper candidate should be reminding the voters that the world is a more dangerous place than it was yesterday. we have to have a strong leader in the white house. who do u want in the WH when the news comes across the wire that mooshy has been killed and nukes are in the hands of al qaeda? this helps giuliani and clinton.
JoeScar says this helps Ghouliani’s campaign.
ghod, what an asshole…
(everything is good for the Republics, right Joe?)
did I mention that Scarborough is an asshole?
Well, it’ll allow the righties to play (or at least talk about playing) with their military toys — the only way that they know how to look “manly”, apparently. It’s the hard work of diplomacy and setting the framework for strong democratic institutions that we’ll have to spend the next several years fixing, both here and abroad. Unfortunately, it’s not something well suited for the “hard worker” now occupying the Executive branch.
how much arrogance does it take to declare this some sort of victory for a U.S. candidate?
not often enough.
I’m kinda expecting a whole lot of history will be re-written during 2008.
Pakistan looks to be burning….
Rep. Gary Ackerman D-NY will be on CSPAN soon.
He’s Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, which includes Pakistan, of course.
how much arrogance does it take to declare this some sort of victory for a U.S. candidate?
don’t know exactly, but I would say that it is hard-wired into the Republics.
Pakistan looks to be burning….
While rethugs celebrate…
Who gave Pakistan money and weapons all these years even though Pakistan would not let us go after Ossama? Bush and the Republican controlled Congress thats who supporting unelected, unpopular dictators even if they say that they support us does not work.
Bush is now having his own fall of the Shah of Iran moment.
Joe and Rudy can try and spin this but is anyone who follows politics believing the GOP spin anymore besides the Press and a few 30%ers?
It WILL be interesting to see how long it takes Bush to emerge in public for a statement.
Happy post-holidays everyone. I can’t believe the Bhutto news. Maybe I’ve been reading too much murder mysteries over X-mas break but . . . the mind reels with possible suspects and conspiracies.
I’m sorry smgumby, but do you mean now 2008 is not going to be what we expected it to be yesterday?
seems to be that while the admin was looking at Iran, they ignored the dangers of Pakistan…
will that be noted? somehow I doubt it…
To me it has the look of black ops
Or maybe I should be happy with the “lone gunman”
The better question to investigate is why the “press” remains with those 30%-ers…
Whose black ops?
To add to current “joys”, look what will be waiting for Dick Dick’s errand boys. The Guardian
This is the fall of the Shah moment. December 2, 1979 ,I was in Libya when the hostage taking occurred and our embassy was burned in Tripoli. Not good times.
If Pakistan explodes it will be noted.
yes!
A tragedy for democratic reform in Pakistan. A preview of what opponents of Republican dictatorial control might expect? The right has not hesitated to use violence against opposition voices when it served their interests, Cheney, Goodman, Schwermer, MLK, JFK, RFK, Medgar Evers, Liuzo et al.
The repugs managed to squash everything they don’t like.
Oh the simpleton mind of the GOP. A power hungry dictator takes out his opponent. The GOP claims it was AL Qaeda extremists and that is why we need to vote for them? Boy, they really think poorly of the American people, huh?
I hope some clear thinking leaders stand up and call BS.
Sounds wrong. Suicide bombers typically work on behalf of religious movements against their opponents. Bhutto was not particularly anti this or that religous movement. She opposed to Musharaf, whose followers are not of the suicide mentality. They are more military and business.
Cause they are bought and paid for? Or because they really do believe in the GOP Dogma of Family Values, Southern Strategy, the Laffer Curve, Milt Friedmen etc
Yes, what would be the consequences for India, China etc.?
Speaking of making statements, why has Musharraf not been heard from?
Doesn’t Musharraf have fundie sympathizers in his ranks though?
Yeah the General benefits more than Al Quieda would if she were dead.
He could be in consultation with Leader to get their stories straight.
On Filibuster – if, as is happening (of course) the Rethugs and their MSM cheerleaders are blaming filibusters on Dems, then it is a critical strategy for DEMS to ideed use them on strategic issues(DUH). (In other words, why are Dems SO strategically dumb?!)
Dontcha think that method could be used to divert blame from its real source?
And it begs the question, if the extremist wanted Bhutto so badly, why haven’t they gone after Musharaff? He has had crackdowns and is not liked by the religious extremists as well. Musharraf is clearly the winner in this.
His inteligence services trained Al Quieda we think they still have a soft spot for them. But where is the General if he does not appear soon people will think Al Quieda got him and if they did. CRAP
Christy upstairs on Bhutto
apply the laws of self-interest
If Musharraf does appear, I doubt it will be in civilian clothes.
Your right if Al Quieda did have this kind of power they would killed the General already they have been trying but never could before. Bhutto though threatened Al Quieda how? Besides being a woman of course.
they pale in comparison to the other side of the aisle and the White House.
which pales in comparison to the problem of Big Media carrying the ball and shilling for the cult of republicanism, while denigrating, intentionally panning, or distorting all opposition to the republican cultists. Without Big Media serving as propagandists there never would have been a conservative movement to squander America’s wealth and undermine America’s values, and bush certainly would have continued his career as a failure in every business poppy set up for him instead of causing mass destruction, world condemnation of the US, and subversion of the Constitution and the rule of law – none of which he is yet to be held accountable for in the media’s domain: the court of public opinion.
There is no more pressing item for progressives and those concerned with the truth (including both republicans and democrats) to pursue than breaking up Big Media.
