I like Frank McCourt as a writer, did you like him as a teacher?

He was a great teacher. If you haven’t read Teacher Man, you should. It’s a really good book about what it’s like being a teacher in a less-than-ideal teaching environment.

“Teacher Man” is one of my favorite books. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it.

So why can’t we have as much fun before they depart as we might have after they’re gone? Do they really have that much influence on us? If so (and I think it’s true) shame on us.

that was one of the things that struck me about Angela’s Ashes – how much more difficult his life was than mine, and how he’d moved past it to the point of being able to tell the story with a sense of humor.

Oh, I read about the harrowing childhood…egads! I went digging just now and here’s what I found over at Amazon forums on Angela’s Ashes from one poster there:

Being a life-long Catholic myself, but one who constantly strays, questions, and then returns, I’m fascinated by Frank’s love/hate relationship with the Church. He brings it up in detail in all three of his books, which I’ve read, listened to, and loved. (It’s a treat to listen to his books, as they’re read by himself, and what a lovely voice and accent he has.) Anyway, I had the fine opportunity to meet Frank McCourt seveal months ago at a local bookstore. He gave a talk and signed books. When it was my turn to meet him, I told him that I had a burning question to ask him. “What?” he said. I said, “Mr. McCourt, after all the experiences you’ve had with the Catholic Church, good and bad, may I ask — are you still a Catholic?” He laughed heartily and replied, “My dear, being a Catholic is just like being in the Mafia – once they’ve got you, the only release you’ll get is THE GRAVE.”

About two weeks ago I caught Senator craig on the senate floor reminiscing on endlessly about his good times with the Senate Gay Chorus.. I really need to find it and save it.. It was classic to say the least. The disconnect, beyond the pale.

Yeah, Larry Craig is an amazing study in the power of denial and self-delusion.

Don’t think that motivates Flynt. Though not sure what does. He’s the man we hate to love, so I’ve been a longtime fan.

Oopsie, I mixed my metaphors too much! No gayness in the Scahill stuff that I know of, LOL. I meant it in the politics make for strange bedfellows sort of way. Like the Clintons helping along the privatization of the military functions.

there’s an interesting older book called “Once a Catholic…” which is a series of interviews of different public figures with varying relationships with their church of origin (catholic). Folks like George Carlin, Christopher Buckley, Martin Scorsese, etc. It was fairly interesting as I recall. You might check it out sometime.

Hatred of massive hypocrisy, perhaps fueled by hostility about his shooting.

He knows the ways of the world. What better focus than politicians?
