….when I get to abuse my front page posting privileges here at FDL and put up my favorite Christmas movie, Home Alone.
Yes, I love it. I love every frame of it. I watch if every year, and if there are kids around I watch it 2 or 3 times. I’ve probably seen it 30 or 40 times. It’s one of my favorite films of all time.
It’s also one of those things you want out in the open so no one can ever blackmail you with it.

Hi Jane
zed!
darn.
Hi, Jane!
You wish…! :-P
Indeed, a very cute movie.
I really liked it the first time but it’s not a keeper for me. In fact very few movies are. But then I’m a book person.
Oh, as long as we’re into guilty secrets, I do admit to watching The American President from beginning to end whenever I happen upon it on TV.
And there are a couple of JaLo movies that get the same treatment, though darned if I can remember the titles.
Glad that you didn’t try to hide it Jane! ;-)
My son and two of his friends are watching “I Am Legend” right now. Due back here in an hour.
Those Texans have itchy trigger fingers.
Great film. Chris Columbus and John Hughes — oh, and throw in John Williams for music. Not too shabby.
And what a year 1990 was for Pesci.
Jane, they’re hysterical classic movies (the first two are…wasn’t impressed with the 3rd one). Nothing better than watching the bad guys make absolute fools out of themselves! Love that.
Millagro Beanfield War. The perfect Christmas Movie for Lefticans.
The scene in which the evil developer is trying to burn all the copies of the critical newspaper edition, and then a mysterious wind picks them up and blows them all over town for people to read, nearly brings tears to my eyes. And the soundtrack by Dave Grusin is magnificent.
I’ve never seen MBW. I’ve always meant to rent it, but never get around to it.
I love Grusin, BTW.
The 1970 version of “A Christmas Carol”, called “Scrooge” with Alec Guinness and Abert Finney always gets watched if I’m with my father (not this year). Last night over dinner we were talking about the various movie versions that have been made – something like 4 of them – and which one is the best. I suggested we have “a Scrooge-off” to decide the favorite and they looked at me like I said something dirty.
Dang, Ho, Ho, Ho, my wife and son are at the ER, my son had a Grand Mal seizure… I had to tend to the food and have to meet our guests… Never a dull moment…!!!
Blue, greetings from Blanco. Rent MBW. It is one of Grusin’s finest scores, if not the. And Freddy Fender plays the mayor. Ruben Blades the town sherrif. I mean, what more could one ask for. For such a wooden actor, Redford is a remarkable director.
The Red Shoes – oldie but goodie is you love the late great Brit director Michael Powell and habor childhood ballerina fantasies.
Jane you’re in good company with Home Alone – my recent RN grad and baby of the family watches Home Alone with your reverence, anytime, any day. ;~)
Oh dear CT – keep us posted. :~(
Sorry to hear that CTuttle! Not fun. (((HUGS)))
Oh, gosh. That is terrible! I hope he recovers quickly and well!
ET, Jr. wore that VHS movie out. I don’t like watching any but the very best movies more than once, but I’d find myself enjoying him enjoying the movie, so watched it several times myself.
CT hope your son recovers quickly and completely.
.
Light and love to you and your family.
Hang in there, CTuttle and family!
CTuttle – I hope your son is alright. Good thing hospitals don’t close on holidays. I went in to the hospital late this morning and worked for a few hours seeing some newly admitted people in need and am back home building a fire with family though I’m typing right now instead of watching “Love Actually”.
I couldn’t actually watch any of the sequels, but the original — love it.
Now, RAN might be an interesting movie to try. It’s violent, but there’s so much color…
I hope the Bush family don’t leave Dubya behind when they leave the White House in 1.09.
Watching the kids eat pumpkin loaf makes me happier than just about anything I can think of. They’re just so happy. I smile and smile.
I hope everything turns out well.
Mahalo, Ya’ll for the support!!! He is resting now and hopefully will be home tonite… I’m pissed at his psychiatrist for ordering me to halt his trileptal yesterday, especially, since he was taking 1800 mg’s a day! I specifically asked if it would have a detrimental effect… *Gah*
…Heh…never did see that movie, thought it was for kids…what a teaser, guess I’ll have to rent it
Spew alert. somewhat Sexually explicit Santa.
Thanks for reminding me I need to see that film again:).
Hey spiderpaws. Hi Muzzy
Merry Christmas, Jane. My kids are out ptarmigan hunting with the dog, up on the hills above the far side of the lake. We’re home alone – with my bodyguard, Freddie helping get the turkey ready. Oh, yeah, we’ve got a couple of moose for company, too.
also drunken santas scaring people.
Bad Santa…! ;-)
My two favorite scenes from the first two movies is the toy chest coming down the stairs (”What’s that sound?”…BAMMO!) and the other one is when one burglar is throwing bricks from the top of the roof at the other one who is standing on the sidewalk below. Hysterical!
hehehehehe
I like the shaving cream scene.
Heh, I’m now Home Alone until the guests arrive… I foresee an exodus in the near future…
an old fave flick of mine…. the farmer’s daughter – its so current in this election season re dirty politics ..its an oldie but a goody
hi TexBetsy. I’ve made a few calls to the Lone Star state today to tell about the white Christmas we’ve had here in what ordinarily would be a rainy Portland.
Is that when he ends up catching his hat on fire and uses the toilet to put his head out? LMAO!!!!!
May I ask why it is that you have a bodyguard?
Hey GW! Did you see we have a new centex firepup?
Oh very impressive, ET.
Ouch! I’m sure it especially hurts given that you really didn’t want to stop the meds. Love and wellness to you and your son and your family. I’m glad he’s comfortable now.
It’s 8pm EST and I can’t keep my eyes open. I’m holiday-pooped-out! Nite all. ;-)
Sleep well Kay
Are you referring to the front and center BlueTexan? I see we also have a CasualObserver in Blanco.
Hey CasualObserver, the next Central Texas firepup gathering of the clans will be at my house in Austin. And you’re certainly welcome to come. How do I find you off-line? To put you on our e-list. Date’s not been even looked at yet. I better get busy…..
Mele Kalikimaka, Kay! Mahalo, GW!
gnite kay. sleep well.
In case Jane is ever Home Alone, we want to assure her of our presence.
Back in the ’70s, I took over a notoriously corrupt boat harbor. The customers weren’t used to having a harbormaster who couldn’t be bribed. But it was an exciting time to work there, as I had plans for the place to expand and become a model of what an Alaska marina should be. One fellow, Freddie, quit working for the police department to work for me. He was a karate black belt, and an excellent assistant.
I pissed off so many Anchorage politicians and developers by not showing them favoritism over other customers, one chased me up a boat lift ladder with a knife between his teeth one day. I laughed him down. Freddie came up to me afterward, saying “You need a bodyguard!” I hired him.
That was 1978. He’s come in handy a few times since.
((CT and family))
You know we’re thinking about you.
I am not home alone – I am hanging with my FDL family
Well, my cooking hasn’t gone to waste, several of my wife’s patients families have picked up some plates to deliver… My wife will be pleased… 8-)
casual observer — email me texbetsy at g mail
GW,
I’m not sure how to post contact info here without alerting
fatherlandhomeland security. Or should we be more concerned about DOJ. Perhaps you should post notice here at FDL.Now, Princess Bride. Surely, there’s a fine Christmas Movie.
Joyeux Noel, Ma Cheri!!!
thanks CT – prayers your wife and son will be home from the ER soon
My older son looked a lot like the actor in Home Alone…I think it was that he was about the same age and had sort of the same haircut.
But that’s one of his favorite movies, and we have certainly seen it 40 times if not more.
One of my favorite Christmas movies is Bell, Book and Candle. Kim Novak, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Lemmon.
Mahalo, Suz! I’m an eternal, err… infernal optimist! *g*
Best wishes for CTuttle and son.
I am a Bell, Book, and Candle fan myself. I forgot about Love Actually. That’s a good choice too.
Wow! Good for you, all the way around. For doing the right thing with the harbor, for laughing down the knife-wielding teeth and for hiring freddie!
I watched that movie last year because Jane said it was good and darned if she wasn’t right.
Merry Christmas everyone.
Just a drive-by to wish Firepups Merry Chrismas (v.2) from the land of oz.
Happy Christmas, Jane and all you wonderful FDLer’s. I’m out to walk my hound and work off some of that roast beef and yorkshire pudding.
re: films. Home Alone, yes. RAN, oh yes, fabulous. Also Home for the Holidays, with Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr, Anne Baxter, and someone else, that handsome guy from The Practice? – a great film you can laugh over every time.
Tonight we’re watching a Warren Miller film, I think, to rev up for the slopes.
CTuttle, hope all is well.
now what did i predict when all the candidates said they were taking off from campaigning? anyone remember?
yep, this was it:
Dodd Celebrates Christmas In Iowa

Jane, have you seen this?
Carson Daly: NBC Gave Me An Ultimatum To Return To TV
from Huff Po by The Huffington Post News Editors
For Carson Daly, the phrase “the show must go on” has taken on a whole new significance. “An ultimatum was put in front of me,” Daly told the Los Angeles Times of his decision to return to host NBC’s “Last Call With Carson Daly” during a continuing writers’ strike. “It was, ‘Put a new show on Dec. 3 or 75 people are fired. What’s your answer?’”
Daly said he quickly decided he couldn’t live with putting loyal staffers out of work, the newspaper reported Monday. When asked who at NBC delivered the ultimatum, Daly said it was his “immediate bosses” but wouldn’t be more specific.
CTuttle: Hope it turns out well for your son. What a way to spend xmas.
CTuttle,
stopping by again – praying, thinking, knocking on wood for your son.
Mahalo, Ya’ll, interestingly, I’m also awaiting the paramedics return… One of them left their response bag behind… I could make use of it, Uncle Sam trained me well… Ho, Ho, Ho, Santa did leave a gift for me… *g*
off to deal with dinner and a pack of hungry teenagers
back later
Ahh, C’mon folks, a little humor is always a balm…!
Hmmm… *crickets* No Problemo, it is Xmas…! *g*

May the new year find us all finding our dreams for peace on earth, and good will to all.
And May Dawg Bless Us All In A Minor Swing. *G*
just watched the final set piece of home alone on cable where macauly beats the crap out of joe pesci and daniel stern. it’s a very funny film.
merry xmas jane, and all the firepups.
may i direct your attention to skippy’s blog where we have a letter from jesus:
I knew you were kidding, CT. I bet you hid that bag so so they would have to come back to get it and you could eye the cute one again.
My lady wants I should say Merry Christmas to each of you. She reads all of the posts and your comments.
Merry Christmas to you all… lahoma and kiddo.
But they were all male, Ma Cheri… *g*
I asked my wife to go mention it to them, but, I guess they left beforehand… It gives pause to their alertness I guess…
Hi all,
busy day getting ready for open house tomorrow. And as a Christmas surprise I got a muscle spasm in my lower back. Oh well. Croissant dough in the fridge along with brioche dough. Made a few dozen chocolate truffles and lots more to come tomorrow.
Favorite Christmas movies:
The Desk Set—Tracy, Hepburn and Gig Young
Bell Book and Candle
Claymation Christmas (1988 with the California Raisins doing Rudolph)
Love Actually is a new addition
White Christmas
The Bishop’s Wife (Cary Grant, David Nivin, Loretta Young)
as for music, doubt if any of you have ever heard of King Island Christmas, but it is WONDERFUL! Had the choir do a few pieces from it last night. Big hit. Someone should make it into a christmas movie.
Mele Kalikimaka, OKK and Lahoma!
I can’t find Minor Swing, or Blue Midnite, and this is usually in E but what the hay:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
Let it swing, let it swing, let it swing, swing, swing! *G*
Another good one for seeing the bad guys get it hysterically funny is Hopscotch, with Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson. Double the pleasure if you are a Mozart lover!
Jane,
YGM
Home Alone? I got out our piles and piles of Xmas tapes and CDs, as i do every year and, as every year, that one never got played. I dunno. That’s just not a big one in the Beerfart Liberal household. For me it was more like once you saw it you didn’t need to see it again. oh well, each to their own. Everybody has one Xmas movie like that and I’m glad you got to see yours – again.
…apparantly a tiger got loose from the SF zoo and bit someone already…grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Oh what the heck, Larue Let The Dawg Out!!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wehN_wYGU9E
World class musicians, world class acoustic music.
And with that, I’m off with the camel’s loping across the desert night under a full moon with the breezes soft and cool upon our robes.
HUZZAH!!!
Ok. I lied. This one’s too good not to share.
And it’s got some GREAT instrumentation, individually and with the ensamble:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJq44fxBfns
Now I go lope . . . . .
I’m late to the game, but I also love this movie. In fact I watched it today, 1.5 times (they’re playing it over and over!).
They get every detail– all the things a kid would do in the house if no one was there to tell him not to. Shooting a gun, riding the toboggan down the stairs, everything.
My favorite scene is on the airplane when Kate realizes she forgot Kevin.
Oh yeah, and I also really loved the scene where he scares the hell out of the pizza guy. Was that a real movie?
Loose tiger at SF zoo killed one person and mauled two others who are in stable but critical condition at SF General. A Code Yellow was in effect for a short time. Tiger shot and killed by SF policeman. Not known how tiger got out. Zoo was open today. Reports kind of sketchy.
The book is SO MUCH BETTER! Laugh out loud, tears streaming good. This book was a litmus test for me by two gals who would not, could not be friends unless you were effected by the book. Luck would have it – I passed the test. Many years later, my husband to be also passed. My fantasy is to have an opportunity to do another version of the movie – Salma Hyak WILL be involved.
I have three favorites:
1. TJ and the Cat. Made in the early sixties by Jane Wagner, Lilly Tomlin’s gal, about a little boy in harlem who finds and befriends a kitten. I tear up just remembering it. If I ever meet Lilly, I intend to make a huge fool of myself gushing about the movie.
2. A Christmas Memory. Truman Capotes’s lovely story brought to life by the always good Geraldine Fitzgerald.
3. Christmas on Walton’s Mountain. The pilot for the tv series. I guess the stories that remind me of (my concept of) the real message of the season.
Cheers to all!
