Emptywheel notes that Dana's a bit touchy these days behind the podium, worried that if she's saying one thing and "anonymous sources" are saying another about the destruction of the torture tapes, she looks like a bit of a toady:
Of course, Dana's fighting a losing battle, since several of the journalists know that someone in the White House was floating the Harriet Miers story, and the more Dana pretends that those people weren't floating the story, the more it will erode her own credibility.
At least, that's the way it should work. Those journalists who got the false Harriet Miers story should expose their source--who was, after all, misleading the journalists--and illustrate the degree to which this Administration abuses jouanlistic rules to sow lies. That's the way it should work. But it probably won't.
No, it won't.
But it's always fun to watch her pitch a hissy fit.

Jane!
Jane!
But Dana is a toady. What happened to the good old days when people took pride in their work?
OK, Ann in AZ:
I’m quite happy to follow you twice this morning…
Jane ! Second ! Back to lurkin’.
Damn !
Jane:
small typo: emptywheel…
Jane, I notice you’ve had a bunch of hot posts lately. Is that to make up for no heat in the house? If you took up Cassie’s invite you could be basking in 70 degree sunshine right now. ;-)
Empathywheel
I saw her getting testy yesterday.
Something like It means what it means and I’m not going to comment about that.
She reminded me of an overworked, cranky mommy berating her children.
But, she’s so young and naive it doesn’t work for her. So, not only do we get no truth from her, there’s that psychological contradiction too.
It’s not important, but the lead paragraph in the post is repeated.
You know, if journalists would just admit that Dana is the face of the lying administration and that it is her job to mislead everybody, then we could all get along.
But that would mean that the WH press corpse would have to do some leg work of their own to find the other side of the she said/he said that they are duly required to write.
No one in the gop believes the merino says anything true, why would she worry about anything if she works for a serial killer? We can’t expect someone so callous to have feelings, they simply wouldn’t work for the killers. Or is it a mob thing? can’t quit without expecting problems? Sort of like religion? leave the one you are in and you know you are going to hell. Reputation? that is hilarious, a spokes liar, what kind of reputation would you prefer vs. the one you have?
when will stupidity be treated like the plague instead of embraced?
Maybe Dana, unlike Ari, actually has a conscience and is actually concerned with outright lying?
Yeah, I know. That thought made me laugh as well.
From the WH Press Briefing yesterday:
Testy, yes. And not pretty. I meant the briefing…
Perino: Peroxide on a pig.
Poor Dana. She is a pretty girl.
She shoulda come to Hollywood and done commercials — you know, like sell toilet bowl cleaners?
Oh, that’s right, she’s kinda already doing something like that.
Hey Jane –
I dunno…I just never watch WH press conferences. I mean why spend time watching a conga line of paid liars lie to the press? And then watch the press just type it up?
Yes, it certainly is, Jane. Nice job on the post. Loved the snark.
Miss Prissy and her hissy want the journalists that she faces everyday to believe that she, and only she, speaks for the White House, speaks for the President. This while you have the VP and his boys whispering sweet nothings in journalists ears! Yeah, Dana, that’ll happen! Really it will, if you only believe!
Toilet bowl cleaner can only do so much when nobody ever flushes the damned stool.
Make that 3, Biodun!
Dana would be very annoying to watch even if I was not a liberal. That superior smirk she wears reminds of too many people I have known who believe they are more exceptional than others (& show it) with nothing to back it up. She is an ignorant twit, imo.
I am begining to compare Dana Perino with Ron Zieglar.
That’s not an opinion, it’s a goddamned fact.
Dana does indeed through a delightful hissy…
I found it fascinating listening to her on NPR’s “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me”. Not the Cuban Missile idiocy, but when she’s asked about her tough week and all of the sudden her perky cheerful persona turns to ice after being asked her encounter with Helen Thomas the previous week. Don’t mess with this woman’s talking points.
OT, sorry, but here’s a pullquote from Glenn Greenwald today:
He could be talking right to some Clinton or Obama supporting fire-pups, couldn’t he?
Dana Perino doesn’t even know a thing about the Cuban Missile Crisis, but yet, she’s the one who is the voice of the Bush Regime! Uh ha. Well, I suppose, it makes sense to take a person who knows nothing and then tell this person, “Here’s what you have to say today!”, and it does make it easier. No?
Well, I followed you only twice. Someone else followed you the third time…*g*
Ms. Perino strikes me to be a person very protective of her master, and quite capable of directing much vindictiveness and anger toward those who would criticize her prez.
Ooowww! Snap!
Precisely why they hired her. To fill an empty vessel with fiction and fable.
I thought about that after I already posted. Three consecutive threads! That’s a record and a new personal best for me!
“erode her own credibility” Ha! Don’t think you can erode no credibility any further but they keep trying.
Hi Jane, Off topic but the widget for letters to the amptp isn’t working for me. I wrote the Daily Show and Colbert Report and the Mailer-Daemon will not deliver them. Is it just me? Have I angered the email daemons somehow? Perhaps it was the tone of my letter:)
Take care, Jan
Did Dana Perino graduate from Regent University? If so, that explains a lot.
And this is from Dana’s WH press briefing the day before yesterday, Dec. 18:
Talk about talking points… (Ref: comment @ 25.)
Ditto me. Both TDS & CR emails got kicked back.
Didn’t Dana try to pretend later that she was kidding when she said she didn’t know anything about the cuban missile crisis on npr? Like I believe that. She is the wh spokesperson & she wasn’t smart enough to know better to admit over the airwaves she was clueless about a major historical event. Not a bright bulb.
Congrats. I might have had that maybe three times. But I’m not really counting… I know I have had three unconsecutive threads in one day many times. *g*
The poor thing isn’t going to get as good of a book deal as Scottie got, and you KNOW that’s got to be eating at her.
Does anyone here remember the song from Music Man,
Pick a little, Talk a little?
This am it’s been clean a little, blog a little. Bake, bake, bake, blog a little more.
Thank you friends for breaking up my chores with some considerate snarking and helpful links…and a good reason to get away from the fumes.
:)
For those asking or curious, this is Dana’s background:
How big a book deal did Scottie get? If it is bigger than Rove gets for his…ouch.
I think ol’ Scotty actually had a conscience, which made it difficult for him to lie convincingly all the time.
Ari had neither conscience nor scruples so he had no problems lying. Since he was also a truel believer, it was no problem across the board.
Dana is a True Believer so has no problems lying. But since she’s also shown that she’s rather lacking in the brains/knowledge of the world, she can’t do it as convincingly as Ari could.
Thanks, Biodun. We are so easily amused, aren’t we?!!
Maybe they should start off with some questions that she MIGHT know the answers to, like
“Dana? Are you a natural blonde?” Or “Dana? What’s your real age?”
Aye that perino is such a loser. She is the worst one.
OT, and I refuse to put a link for Drudge(u know where to find that garbage dump).
But word is starting to spread on the internets that St Mccain is trying to stop the Times from prinitng a very nasty article about him and the telecom bill. Bill Keller is being lobbied by Bill Bennett. Wonder if the wingnuts are trying to bring down St McCain? I wonder if keller will protect another war-mongering wingnut if the story is really true. According to Drudge, keller doesn’t want to interfere with the upcoming primaries, BUT…if it was a Dem he would have nos such thoughts!
I can’t stand the press anymore!
smells like Christmas Spirit!
And this bit:
The Englishman indeed. He’s the one who said “Oh, Dana” after she told him about confusing the Bay of Pigs with the Cuban Missile Crisis…
(Same link as my 41.)
Thanks for that Bio.
I must say, I’m stunned. Really stunned.
I Never would have thought that she had that kind of education.
There’s got to be something more than just kool-aid going on.
Hypnotism?
Speaking of which, didn’t I read somewhere recently that there wasn’t as much interest for Rove’s book as originally thought?
Perinno: In way over her head like many Bush employees. However, the lying in the admin succeeds because it has great facilitators in the completely gutless dems.
They’ll hold various Bushies “in comptempt” of Congress. That’d be the 110th Congress who was gonna do things differnetly and just passed a bill with literally 9000 earmarks in it. Fine. And now what?
Tomorrow you’ll see State Secrets plastered all over the walls of Judge Henry Kennedy’s courtroom in D.C.
Think of the Republican juggernaut as Pinnochio with a straight arm that can knock the Dems down every time.
Ari told the Press Corps years ago, “Be careful what you say”, you know…to squash dissent and those pesky “getting to the bottom of the truth!” questions. Then we had Scotty McClellan who said, “No comment” after every question. Now we have ole Dana who has that far off brainwashed look who says she can’t comment on anything because there’s an investigation going on. I’m sorry, but I’m tired of their bullshit!
Ongoing investigation has been replaced with preliminary inquiry as the excuse of the day for not answering simple questions. Dana can’t even state whether or not the WH will comply with subpoenas. Seems that WH refusal to obey the law is a good reason for impeachment.
This well-accessorized pig missile actually greets the Press Corps in the voice of the fat, drunk and stupid Fred (the Dorff) Dorffman . . .
” . . . hellllooooooo”
Correx to my 48:
Hubby said “Oh, Dana” after wifey asked him if the Cuban Missile Crisis was that Bay of Pigs thing…
Uh, Dorffman was actually known as “Flounder” (his “Delta Tau Chi pledge name”)
I think her reaction yesterday reveals a real achilles heel for her:
It matters to her what the public thinks about her.
People like Rove and Bush and Cheney, not so much do they care what the public thinks of them.
Oh gawd…Perino in action!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4kt.....re=related
Scary. I cry for my country.
Speaking of which, didn’t I read somewhere recently that there wasn’t as much interest for Rove’s
booklies as originally thought?Forgive the correction but I think we should be more explicit as to what Rove is selling
Speaking of Christmas smells And Dana Perino, I’m outta here to go buy lots of flowers for my livingroom: Narcissus!
See y’all later.
I think you’ve got it
The DLC is eargerly awaiting it to use as a textbook.
Heeey…allowing a brief segue to an Animal House quote:
Bush to We the People:
“Hey, you fucked up. You trusted us.”
Sorry for the OT…carry on.
That Bush and his razor-sharp wit! Who else, but Dubya could have come up with such a clever nickname for an Englishman?!
And just why hasn’t Attorney General Mukasey RECUSED himself? As JUDGE Mukasey he issued the warrants to seach the residence and computers of Jose Padilla, based principally on the
tortureinterrogation of Abu Zubayah. So he was either assured by the DOJ that Zubaydah’s interrogation wasn’t under duress (in which case he was lied to); OR he knowingly approved the water-boarding.In either case he’s involved very deeply with the case…and possibly criminally involved. Plus he may have LIED to Congress about not making any judgments regarding water boarding if he was aware of the methods of interrogation.
If the latter he should step down from the AG position.
rofl
I disagree here. I don’t consider Ari a liar. But I think he’s VERY good at not telling the truth. Look at how he handled the Libby case. Most lawyers can trip witnesses up on cross-examination. With Ari, they never even came close. And I’m convinced that there was SOMETHING they were trying to pry out of him, and he simply tap-danced his way out of it.
Mucousy seems to have slid into a slippery situation.
A warning shot over the deck of America’s sinking ship…
http://wonkette.com/politics/n.....331981.php
Again, I cry for my country everyday…usually by noontime.
As Justice Scalia would say, recusing is for wimps. Besides when you are turning a blindeye to all the other felonies this Administration is committing and even maybe abetting some of them, what’s a little conflict of interest?
Actually, what Ari and Scott did was exactly the opposite of what they were supposed to be doing: quite good at giving out no information whatever on most things.
What about Ari and Rove and the press guys by the side of the road in Africa? I think Ari got caught lying then.
Withholding the article, of course, would be what is interfering with the primaries.
See also: phone jamming in NH….
I disagree on this, too. I think that was an honest difference in recollections. Ari testified that he told the press guys MORE information than they remembered receiving, not less. The most likely scenario, in my mind, is that he was using typical Ari-speak, and the reporters either had no idea what he was trying to say, or they were just ignoring him completely.
I can just see behind the doors of the WH, the nasties laughing at another sucker they sent out to the arena to get face smacked and play the stupid fool. Poor Dana. After reviewing all the other selectees at the podium in the WH press room, you’d think she would have turned that job down. But nnnnooooooo, this time it’s going to be different. Hah!
Here’s an example of Ari Fleischer in action:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news.....205-7.html
He was good. He was veeeeeeeery good. ;-)
OT–
And Repugs managed to pull this off in a so-called Dem-controlled Congress:
What became of Scottydog’s tell-all no-tell Bushco ordered recant?
Apparently the new CNN Iowa Poll shows that Edwards, Obama, and Clinton are statistically even with each other in Iowa.
Not that anyone is interested in a “horserace” ;-)
And AP editorializes a little bit:
(Same link as my 77.)
And Harry Reid’s reaction to the Repug pork-barrel haul is quite lame:
(Same link as the others.)
I think Ari is a liar, Scotty and Dana too. When up is down and down is up and the Press Secretary is explaining it thus on behalf of a pack of liars, then who is lying? They all are.
This is reminiscent of Keller’s holding the NSA warrantless wiretapping story before the 2004 election because he did not want it to have an impact on the election, neatly overlooking the fact that its absence also had an impact, one favoring Bush.
oh GOD how I despise her.
I would like to point out that name calling “Pig Missile” doesn’t seem to invoke much critical thinking or solutions to the issues. I read liberal blogs to help further our causes and look for solutions. I have forwarded items to other interested liberal since 2002. That Dana Perino is over her head in this job is not news.
What makes your name calling any different from the Rush Limbaughs?
The internet and blogs are our only means out of the mess we are in. Lets use our voice responsibly.
i don’t know, i took it as like a “lipstick on a pig” gone ballistic sort of reference.
Hey, Sen. Suzie-Q Collins’ Internet Director, Lance Dutson, didn’t call Jane and others here at FDL “foul-mouthed fem bloggers” for nothing! It’s been earned very well I may add.
If you’ve spent anytime reading the reich wing blogs, you’d know in an instant that “pig missile” is nothing compared to what the vile knuckle draggers are saying every minute of every day.
Thank you for your concern
Edwards was leading in Tuesday’s Insider Advantage/Majority Opinion Poll. Edwards also leads in the all important 2nd choice candidate. Barring any unforeseen mis-steps in the next few weeks, I believe Edwards will win Iowa. The question will be, can he gain enough momentum from that win. I certainly hope so.
OT - Maybe. Did Mitt’s father really march with MLK? Are their photos of him and MLK side-by-side in the south marching while angry crowds screamed, shook their fists, police gnashing dogs trained to rip people apart, fire hoses and other friendly greetings? I need to see them for proof. Or is Mitt creating an urban myth? You know, like the Alamo myth - it’s a good story regardless of its basis in fact.
Pig Missile is a concise critique which convolutes the Bay Of Pigs Invasion with the Cuban Missile Crisis in a manner that Dana herself invoked. Very fitting, I think.
Dana comes off, to me, as a harried substitue teacher who somehow thinks that she’s due respect soully because she has the biggest desk.
Quaker Girl, Mitt Romney’s MLK story has been proven to be a lie. Can’t remember whether it was here or Daily Kos that I read about it.
I wonder what kind of contract Dana signed. What’s her sunset date? I get the sense she can’t wait ’til this gig is over. Bet she strikes off another day on her calendar buried deep in her desk drawer.
If I had marched with MLK I’d have a picture and it would be blown up and plastered on my living room wall.
Mitt was speaking metaphorically in tongues.
Mitt was using a parable - like Jesus liked to do. Mitt probably has a black friend.
More administration fuckery upstairs in Tula’s new thread:
Bush Ideology Bleeds Workers
Dear Sporkovat:
I intend to vote for whichever Democrat is nominated. That statement includes Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama. I can’t speak for other people on Firedoglake, but I’m not willing to see any of the Republicans elected, if I can help it, by witholding or wasting my vote. I have great respect Glenn’s remarkable intelligence and writing. However, if either he or you can’t understand my position, I’m sorry.
You know, I just moved back to the States after living much of the last decade in Central America, primarily Costa Rica.
For a dyed in the wool liberal like myself, cruising through a blog site like Firedog Lake is fun, and to some extent reassuring. It reinforces for me two things.
One is that there are others out there who think like me, sort of.
The other is I realize, despite all the buzz about the power of the blogosphere, just how powerless we peons really are in the face of a bipartisan political class in this country that, despite all the superficial differences the class’s members claim exist between them, shares a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.
Hillary doesn’t want change. She’s a phony thru and thru.
If Hillary were a working or middle class woman who put up with the abuse and humiliation big Bubba heaped on her, the mental health and social work professions, especially many women in those professions, would be labeling Hillary as “codependent”, “lacking in self esteem”, or some other PC psycho babble diagnosis that is so popular these days.
But instead, Hillary, just because she’s a woman, as codependent and lacking in self esteem as she is, - arrogance and entitlement, by the way do not add up to self esteem and self respect-, is being held up by many as a role model for younger women to look up to.
I don’t think so folks!
This country, as Keith Olbermann so aptly pointed out in his interview with Bill Moyers, is in a state of emergency.
All the pithy, clever comments slamming Bush aren’t going to do the proverbial pee hole in the snow’s worth of any good to turn this country around.
The entire political class of this country is corrupt.
Until people, of all political persuasions, begin to accept that reality, nothing is going to change.
When I decided to come back this year, I really thought there was going to be an opportunity to help bring about real change.
but the more I watch, the more I realize the rainforest might just be where I really belong.
At least there, you know who the real snakes are - be they reptilian or human.
Among America’s bipartisan political class today, it’s all but impossible to tell who the snakes are..
Olbermann for President!
That’s why I suggested in Christy’s thread on the economy that the Dems come together and form a unified, informed party policy that will really address issues with solutions:
I recommended the Dems come up with a party platform to run on that was problem-solving centered. For example, meet with Gore and come up with an environmental/sustainable/energy policy-plan and that no matter who ends up the candidate, “that group formed policy” would go on to serve the country.
I suggested they meet with the Concord Coalition to form an economic policy and to start working on it as a group before the election because of how bad things are going to be soon.
Crazy. Maybe. Novel? Workable? Yes! It would rally my vote ASAP to actually see the Dem candidates roll up their sleeves and start serving our country as leaders NOW instead of talking about it on the campaign trail. The actions of preservation would echo across the country.
I know, a pipe dream…Unfortunately, it’s going to take a pipe dream to fix and preserve our nation.
When I first glanced at your comment, I saw ‘empty weasel’ instead of ‘empty vessel’. Both are appropriate.
I am intrigued to know who coined the “Pig Missle” moniker? It always gets my attention when coffee comes shooting out my nose.
