I’ve been writing here at Firedoglake for about three weeks now, and I suppose this would be a good time to admit I live in Iowa. Iowa is also known among residents as, the land of 10,000 phone calls*, all inquiring who you are supporting at the Caucus. I have yet to declare my allegiance to a Democratic Campaign – or at least publicly declare one. Every vote counts, and I would not want to hurt my choice with the "Imprimatur of Shame".
I bring this up, not out of any biographical obligation, but to mention — again — I get a LOT of phone calls about the campaign. Most are volunteers, but many are from phone banks, including the rare push poll. In talking to the occasional Republican friend (via "lemon juice on paper" with Ron Paul supporters) they tell me the push polls and bizarre recorded calls are heavier on their side. Which brings us to the story of Allen Raymond, convicted Republican phone scammer — and the kind of recruit Karl Rove brought into the GOP tent in a big way.
A former GOP political operative who ran an illegal election-day scheme to jam the phone lines of New Hampshire Democrats during the state’s tight 2002 U.S. Senate election said in a new book and an interview that he believes the scandal reaches higher into the Republican Party…
Raymond said those who’ve tried to make him the fall guy for the New Hampshire scheme failed to recognize that e-mails, phone records and other evidence documented the complicity of a top state GOP official and the Republican National Committee’s northeast regional director.
Both men were later convicted of charges related to the phone harassment, along with Raymond and an Idaho phone bank operator. Defense lawyers have since won a retrial for James Tobin, the former regional director for both the RNC and the National Republican Senatorial Committee…
GOP committees have paid Washington law firms more than $6 million to defend Tobin and to fight a Democratic civil suit against the party. Raymond, himself a former RNC official, said in the book and an interview that he believes that the scandal reaches higher.
"Any tactic that didn’t pass the smell test would never see the light of day without, — at the very least, the approval of an RNC attorney," he wrote.
Paul Twomey, a lawyer for the New Hampshire Democratic party, said that phone records obtained in the civil suit showed that Tobin made 22 calls to the White House political office in the 24 hours before and after the jamming.
Twomey said Tobin refused to testify about the calls, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.
Josh Marshall was on this story from early on and I recall him bringing many of these issues to light. But the McClatchy article reveals more about the kind of person that becomes a GOP operative in the era of Rove:
Raymond, 40, who served three months in jail last year, said he earned a graduate degree in political management at New York’s Baruch University solely to make money off politics, and it made no difference to him whether he was a Republican or a Democrat.
Ah, a perfect political sociopath. And the techniques fit that mode too:
One of his tactics, Raymond said, was angering union households with calls in which people with Latin-sounding voices talked favorably about a rival candidate’s support for the North American Free Trade Agreement. And he used the voice of an angry black man, posing as a Democrat, to stir up "fear, racism, bigotry" in white neighborhoods.
Classy.
Raymond spent three months in prison, but it didn’t seem to hurt his powers of snark.
As for his three months in a Pennsylvania prison, he wrote: "After 10 full years inside the GOP, 90 days among honest criminals wasn’t really any great ordeal."

Wow!
You mean, Republicans don’t really believe in the issues they claim to believe in? They’re just talking points, designed to win elections?
I can’t wait to read his book. It’s not out until next month, which means after the holidays when more people will have the time to sit down and read.
As it gets closer to Jan 3rd, are you going to take your phone off the hook, or shut off the ringer maybe? As a political junkie I understand why so many calls are made, but as a person with a life (ha!) those calls would get on my nerves.
This is why progressives will ALWAYS be at a disadvantage to those such as the GOP.
They takes pride in being underhanded, evil, asshats.
amazing.
on the plus side, since this guy isn’t an ideologue he has reason to tell all (book sales) and little reason to protect his past colleagues (unless he can collect wingnut welfare)
Let’s see credentials… time served Plummers from Nixon dirty tricks. The Brooks Brothers outside the Florida vote count raising hell, When I read this I laughed so Rovian rediculous jamming phones!!!
Can republicans take themselves seriously??? Listen to Hatch and Session on replay of filibuister cspan2. Surreal.
We are the laughing stock of the world.
Huckabee front runner for R president???
Preachers have been preaching politics instead of religion since Reed and Christian Coalition Jerry Fallwel duels porn king Larry Flynt who wants to run for California Governor. Surreal doesn’t cover it.
Attaturk, I just want to say how much I enjoy your posts. They show up just in time for this left coast insomniac to have something thought provoking to read in the wee hours. Since I am kind of out of it when it comes to pop music the previous late night posts, while informative, didn’t provide a lot of sustenance (though the comments are still fun). Anyhow, your nice work is appreciated.
Thanks mucho,
rxbusa
I love progressive exceptionalism.
How, pray tell, would Flynt be worse than the governator?
Has anyone ever considered Woodrow Wilsow an asshat? He did make a big mistake and later said, “I have betrayed my country.” Good mea culpa, and he was not wrong.

Citizen Attaturk and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Great post…but why wouldja wanna stir up yer northern neighbors with drive-by cheap shots? I ken feel the Iowa prom queen jokes comin’ already.
As for the GOP, the political “professionals” in the Grand Old Party have made an art form outta smears and “dirty tricks” at least since the 1930’s. These folks have no conscience and would rather get someone jailed on false charges than anythin else because that is the dirty trick that keeps on givin’ election after election…witness Alger Hiss, the procurement officer in Wisonsin and the former Democratic governor of Alabama.
The Republican Party is a fascist syndicate and needs to be irradicated, root and branch from this country’s politics. Tuesday was jest the first breeze of the cleansing wind of change that will soon become a hurrican. I have been callin’ for a truth and reconcilliation procesws to be instituted after President Edwards is sworn in, but after what we’ve leaqrned about 9/11 and the telecome scandal… well jest fuck those bastards!! I want RICIO charges against the Carlyle Group, the Bush family and the Republican National Committee.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THEY AIN’T GOIN’ WITHOUT A FIGHT!!
Thanks, that’s why Jane asked me to post at this time of the day.
Well, that and no sane person would want this shift.
I have the right to tweak Minnesota.
I was born and raised there.
And I’ve got the scars from 4 Viking Super Bowl losses and Drew Pearson pushing off on Nate Wright to prove it.

Well, I was born and raised in Minnesota also and now live in Western WI…it’s probably a good thing yer postin at this time anight ‘cuz I jest know that the daytime Gopher backers would bring some pretty heavy shit yer way. Anywayz, I am really impressed with the Iowegians this time around…they been doin’ their homework and cosmetics and slick ads ain’t gunna buy a lotta votes in the caucuses. I am feelin’ an Edwrds surge…
Where you at there Attaturk…I’m guessin’ Iowa City?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION THE BATTLE IS GETTIN’ CLOSE AT HAND!!
I live in the “greater” Des Moines area.
And I grew up mocking Iowa as well. And having lived here, a substantial portion was deserved.
But sadly, while Iowans, Minnesotans, Wisconsinites mock each other, they are more alike than different.
It is the North and South Dakotans that really deserve derisive mockery! (j/k)
lol. wilson used to be right up there with hoover on my list of worst presidents. but now, i’m sad to say, i think bush 43 has them both beat.
Can the no.43 car see anyone in his rearview mirror?
You can laugh– soon everyone in the media will be saying he was the best president evah. They’ll name an aircraft carrier after him.
Good morning Attaturk and firepups.
Yes Woodrow was a fine president. He introduced racial segregation into parts of the U.S. Civil Service.

The Journal of Negro History, Vol. 44, No. 2 (Apr., 1959), pp. 158-173
Efforts to stop IEDs by targeting the insurgent networks that finance, build and plant the bombs showed results only after the Bush administration adopted a broader counterinsurgency strategy this year — and sent 30,000 more troops to Iraq to support it.
But a USA TODAY investigation shows that the strategy now used to defeat the bombmaking networks and stabilize Iraq was ignored or rejected for years by key decision-makers. As early as 2004, when roadside bombs already were killing scores of troops, a top military consultant invited to address two dozen generals offered a “strategic alternative” for beating the insurgency and IEDs.
That plan and others mirroring the counterinsurgency blueprint that the Pentagon now hails as a success were pitched repeatedly in memos and presentations during the following two years, at meetings that included then-Defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Vice President Cheney’s chief of staff, Lewis “Scooter” Libby.
The core of the strategy: Clear insurgents from key areas and provide security to win over Iraqis, who would respond by helping U.S. forces break IED networks and defeat the insurgency.
Bush administration officials, however, remained wedded to the idea that training the Iraqi army and leaving the country would suffice. Officials, including Cheney, insisted the insurgency was dying. Those pronouncements delayed the Pentagon from embracing new plans to stop IEDs and investing in better armored vehicles that allow troops to patrol more freely, documents and interviews show.
This is what keeps people out of politics…. Who wants to rub shoulders with such filth?
For those who can keep their nose clean, I have immense admiration. But it sounds like the dregs of society gravitate to a situation where they are given “license” to act out their despicable and manipulative inner worlds.
This isn’t exactly a laugh, despite the diaphragmatic spasming.

Oh what a terrible thing memory is…do ya hear some echos from Vietnam, brother Raven? Oh good God we must end this nightmare and purge our society of these fascist murderers, root and branch. To hell with truth and reconcilliation I want RICO prosecutions for the Bush family, the Carlyle Group, Halliburton, Blackwater and the Republican National Committee.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T LET THE BASTARDS SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY AGAIN!!
Ahmen to that. Bring these bastards to justice.
Sure do. I also just finished Halberstam’s book on Korea and, while he very clearly shows the roots of the right wing scum machine, he also pints out that the Nam was a direct result of JFK’s creation of a “lying machine” . Makes me want to walk the dog. I guess it seems more true than ever, “don;t mean nuthin”.
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDuh and Friedman today. Sigh. MoDuh says that since this is the first time we’ve had a woman who was a serious contender for president, it’s been an adjustment to watch her more changeable looks. Don’t ever tell us about what she stands for, MoDuh, just what kind of clothes she’s wearing and whether or not she giggles. Mr. Friedman discusses the Bali agreement, and says he still don’t know what the Bali climate agreement was about, but he does know that it was incremental, not transformational.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes this morning. Jack Kingston, the other congresscritter from Savannah, just endorsed the MittBot 2.0, who was in town yesterday. (At least I think he was. There are several pictures on the front page of the Savannah Daily Disappointment that look suspiciously like animatronics…) Have a grand day.
From the New Oxford Dictionary of the Republican Language:
“voting rights” = minority voting suppression
“get out the vote” = jam the opposition’s phone bank
“attorney general” = criminal co-conspirator
“culture of life” = all body bags, all the time
“birth pangs of a new Middle East” = breach position
“Jan. 21, 2009″ = the start of the 10th week of emergency rule
Jeez — don’t even think that out loud. [Looks over shoulder and under bed.] “They” might hear you…
Seriously, though, I believe those creatures are capable of anything and may very well be planning something along those lines. [shudder]

Good Morning Attaturk and pups
No Doubt But they are both ass pinching sexist pigs.
Good Morning, Firepups!
It’s clear and cold here in central Jersey this morning! I’ve got a big pot o’ coffee, nice and hot, for whoever needs it. There are bagels and cream cheese this morning–sesame, poppy, oat bran, marble, plain, and cinnamon raisin. Help yourselves.
I’ve been njprogressive for many years (since 1967, with a few years off for college in VA & OH, plus 2 years working in DC), but my earliest political memories date to Iowa in 1960, when I was 5. My parents took my sister and me to rallies for both major party presidential candidates (I don’t remember the speeches at all, just the crowds). And I remember going with my parents to vote–standing in a long, long line, waiting to go into the booth with the curtain.
Thanks for the posts, Attaturk, and for reminding me of how much my earliest years shaped my beliefs about the importance of educating ourselves about candidates and parties, and the value of civic participation. Now as to a proper sentence for Raymond and Tobin….
PS The photo of the phone bank was taken at Franklin Court, a National Park Service site that recreates a row of 18th-century townhouses that were owned by Benjamin Franklin, and used for his print shop. There are view windows into the archaeological excavations on the site, and an underground exhibit about Franklin’s many roles in the founding of the US: writer, diplomat, printer, scientist, statesman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, signer of the Constitution, etc. The exhibition was designed by Robert Venturi, postmodern architect and polymath. You can pick up any of the phones and dial in to the “Franklin Exchange” to hear Franklin’s opinions on any number of subjects, or hear any number of “historical” persons’ opinions about Franklin (Washington, Adams, Lafayette, et al.). Saw the exhibit on my first visit to Philadelphia in 1976. The exhibit looks tired now, but the ideas are still relevant.
Work for peace, every day!
I want RICIO charges against the Carlyle Group, the Bush family and the Republican National Committee.
Yessireebob get em while they are hot!!! Impeach now I’m free and I’m proud
It reminds me of the “We create the reality…” quote. They break the law. They gain power from breaking the laws. And while we’re trying to prove they are lawbreakers, they use that power to hide their crimes, destroy evidence and subvert justice.
If our asses wern’t where they shouldn’t be we would not have 4,000 dead troops millions read , wounded or displaced people of a country who was imasculated in the Desert Storm War. We don’t own the MFin World like the corporate pigs like to think, We were once considered a civilized nation giving aid to the less fortunate,

Thanx, Elliott. Enjoying the 2nd day on holiday & I’ll be able to tune in. I’d like to hear what Dorgan has to say.
I’m seconding what rxbusa said, attaturk. Having a hard time staying asleep lately & yr.early a.m. posts are great reading, ditto the comments.
Catch me up. The war funding passed without a fight? Where are we?
Attaturk: it would be great to hear how your caucus goes next month. Edwards seems to have the leading #2 spot which is very important in Iowa. He did a great interview with Matthews yesterday. His “fight the corporate interests” theme seems to be resonating. Obama to me just hasn’t been saying what needs to be said about where we are in this country. His bemoaning of the political climate and somehow he’ll fix it just seems naive to me. And Hillary, well…
Regarding the midwestern states remember what is said about why Minnesota is so windy:
“because North Dakota blows and Wisconsin sucks”
735 pages whoa! my uncle was a prisoner capture aroud Inchon spent three years in Chinese POW camp gave me a job in his dads overall factory in 1952 all frozen days and nights. My DIs were their and not happy about it all, He did the WWII in the pacific as a tank commander called back. The pol;iticians in this country should be required to be combat Ist Lts before getting in Congress. Old men start wars young men die for. Marlon Brando “Young Lions”. When will they ever learn. Norman Mailor Naked and the Dead.
You have to give this administration credit for knowing how to control the message. The ‘Iraqi’ law forbidding photos of the war along with censoring soldiers email etc was brilliant. Simply brilliant. Why, if I didn’t know better, I’d swear we were a nation at peace.
I glad someone else uses the insanity plea
looks like i’m alone here… but i’m kinda hoping dodd gets some support from iowans. attaturk – you might have wanted to wait until after your caucus to out yourself.
You are not alone, Selise.
Nowadays, the only impeachable offenses are high treason and blow jobs in the Oval Office. Even then IOKIYAR.
I’ve been waiting for someone to tell us they’re from Iowa. Need someone on the ground for some insight. Hope all your posts from now on, attaturk, are eye-witness reports on the lastest from your state.
I think space aliens have hacked into BushCo and are toying with us!
Agreed, you’d barely know…
Unless you’re a member of a grieving family, or know one. My daughter’s best friend in high school was engaged to a young Marine from Camp Pendelton who was killed last year.
The most vivacious girl, loved acting, loved teaching it. I’ve barely seen her smile since then, & that smile used to light up the room.
Why, we are at peace.
Didn’t you get the memo from David Brooks?
i know someone who tried to tell me that. seriously. he really believed it (don’t know if he still does).
My DI at Ft Campbell too. He was one bad motherfucker but he told us afterward, “these politicians are getting ready to send you to a shooting war and we did our best to get you ready”. My old man did 38 landings in the Pacific on a APD and went back in for Korea on a DD. and the beat goes on.
Good morning, I’m not from Iowa, hope it’s still ok to post here :)
Attaturk, you break my heart. Have I ever mocked the Iowegians? Have I said stay south in your own state, don’t come up to Minnesota and compete for lakeshore? Have I ever noted that your Interstates only go up to, what, 85? While we have 90 in SD and 94 in ND?
Seriously, I agree with rxbusa–thanks for your lively and excellent postings.

1968 I had the pleasure, after campaigning for McGovern in Berkeley of demonstrating in Chicago at the DEM National Convention against the Vietnam War. Have they changed???? Last week I met a fella who claimed to be a weather man strange world we live in.

Does the Time magazine article mention that he kills reporters who criticize him?
The politics of smear now turn on Edwards rumor. First thing Imus brought up with Bob Shieffer this morning. So expect to hear the crocodile tear-laced voices of the vile [Limbaugh, et al] pushing this one. Anybody else think it won’t show up in push-polling?
My contempt for the sleazeballs pushing this is beyond description.
That they do it just for money, lacking any moral conviction on policy or principle, shows them for the vile vermin that they are.
Yeah. Damn BushCo. Damn their lies that took that kid’s life from him.
after the non vote from HRC and Obama Monday …can we ALL get behind Edwards and push him into the Whitehouse?
IMESS should have crawled back under the rock from which he emerged…mebbe a ratlesnake will get him on the ranch…cept biting Imess would prolly kill said snake…he has powerful venom
My brother’s words:
There is great wisdom in my brother’s words.
you’re an early adopter now!
seriously, though… i think they are still in a sorta beta test. things change without warning and a month two ago when i called with a problem they were astounded that anyone was using it.
I wouldn’t wish that anyone would be bitten by a rattlesnake, no matter how much I dislike their venomous rhetoric.
Hello Wigwam;
Maybe someone can say if the Hague can start war crimes prosecution without Impeachment. If Putin can be person of the year can’t we have a war crime trial for the good of humanity seriously or do I have to fritter away the rest of my life standing in front of a freight train determned to destroy the bioshepere fro greeds sake? Help me out I’m not a lawyer.. when I went in the campus law school they were playing poker. Go figure I like the rule of law. Then I went by the school of journalism and the vibes weren’t that good. No Impeachment maybe the National Lawyers Guild would contact them I know a few members I’ll ask. They did pass a resolution to Impeach Cheney/Bush. What do you think. Ilike the proactive approach like Looseheadprop said recently tackle the tacklers. A foot note Iowa has way the best collegeate wrester kudos to your State Attaturk.
your to kind, correct me if I am wrong Attaturk will tell you never let up on your opponent unless you want to rack up some points for the team. Your right meaness is unbecoming a person of peace Walk softly and carry a big stick!
yea taking the country into the abyss for venal shilling is no cause for retibution…i do wish the rattler would bite his ass with truth serum

IANAL, but here’s what I’ve found in the wikipedia under the American Service-members Protection Act:
What is the Edwards rumor? I missed it.
I’m sorry Marie. I’m sorry for her last joy thier lost life together. All the lost lives of all the people in the Bush/Cheney corporate war. We have to stop the killing. I am very sorry Marie that does not change anything. I knew in the run up what they had in mind. The CENTCOM planners knew it and advised an occupation force Bush/Rumsfeld/CHENEY/WOLFOWITZ/kisinger an endless line of neocons, knoch one down two popup maybe they are aliens, manipulated intell and the Pentagon it is so horrible. I have not worked hard enough, I demonstrated against this war. I went to my congresscritter with a petition against the next one in Iran I just don’t know how to stop them without Impeachment. Someone help us here? They are insanely clever conivers.
Edwards, Kucinnich, Dodd yes HRC no way Jose. Here’s what is goin on you have to start with raw honesty nothin less.
thing come undone you bet don’t count the good guys out lotsa time the exposure of corporate political can ubravel despite msm.
This is an excellent exchange revealing why the Dems cave in to the Modern GOP:
http://www.crooksandliars.com/…..hread-664/
It’s all in the framing. Bush is able to threaten the American people and then blame the Dems for his abuse should they stand up to him. We need to seriously address this problem.
The Democrats need to become broken records at reframing GOP manipulative language. It’s the only way. It’s up to us to get them there.

About one call to KKKarl Rove’s Li’l Shoppe of White House Horrors every two hours on the day before and the day after the New Hampshire phone jamming “exercise”. That’s a lot of wrong numbers.
But you have to tell us WHERE in Iowa. I know Iowa, that makes all the difference. The bluffs over the Mississippi? The northern plains? Des Moines? Iowa City?? The secret haunts along the Missouri? A thousand little towns where the waitress knows your name and pours your coffee without asking?
I’m very serious. Iowa rocks and has a lot to offer the world, like the Butter Cow . :-) It also has a lot to answer for, like killing the Gulf of Mexico and changing the best state motto in the world for no good reason. ‘Fess up.

Turk, have you seen the polls over on TPM’s election page? The ones from Wisconsin are scary in the support there for Repubs.
I used to work for Dave Obey and remember WI as a Dem-Farm-Labor state.
Wha happened?
They won’t do it, the FBI’s been GUTTED
Kennedy starting PULLING advisors OUT of Vietnam when he realized this was a war that couldn’t be won. This is all documented fact. Of course soon after he began withdrawing the advisors he was assassinated. There were LOTS of entities who wanted JFK dead. The mob and the CIA were two of these entities. Sam Giancana, head of the Chicago mob, helped steal the election for Kennedy in Illinois in ‘60 and shared women with JFK, including Judith Exner, who lived to write a book about it. The problem was, Kennedy wanted nothing to do with the mob after being elected and Bobby Kennedy then started prosecuting the mob. This you don’t do. The mob was/were the ones who actually delivered the killing shot to JFK’s skull, blowing a quarter of his head onto the back of the presidential lincoln, then retrieved by Jackie, tho hacks [spin doctors] publicly stated that Jackie was jumping for fear of her life… BULLS*IT. What she did was very heroic. The CIA hired the mob to “do” JFK, as the CIA and the mob go way back to WWII when the OSS (beginnings of the present day CIA) hired Lucky Luciano to guard American ships for fear that Italian-Americans would sabotage them. The CIA has a history of hiring the mob for dirty jobs, or jobs that they just did not want to touch for one reason or another. The mob has a way of making everything and everyone “go away”. First Kennedy then the CIA patsy Oswald, then Ruby. Very convenient. An funny little coincidence in regard to Ruby; officer Tilden who Oswald (supposedly) shot was married, and his wife worked as a stripper for Jack Ruby. Gee, do ya think Oswald really shot Tilden? Another fact; no witnesses who saw JFK killed in Dallas survived to tell the tale. THese were witnessed that described in detail very accurately shots coming from different directions, including from the FRONT. There were 18 of these witnesses all total, and there was also other footage taken by citizens that November day. Another entity who stood to gain plenty was LBJ. Notice where Kennedy was killed. LBJ then escalated the troop deployment to 150,000 troops by 1965, and move the SAC base from New MExico to Texas. There’s a lot of money in military contracts and building huge 3 feet thick runways. Another little factoid is that Woody Harrelson’s father was in Dallas that day, who was convicted of mudering a federal judge several years later. He was one of the “Three tramps” the Dallas police let free after briefly detaining them. The history channel even did a piece on this, and a photo analysis run by two independent labs both confirm that Mr Harrelson (who sits rotting in federal prison at this writing) and the tramp in Dallas are 90% positive that this is the same man. The CIA also wanted Kennedy dead after they felt he “abandoned them” at the Bay of Pigs, hence the earlier mention of the CIA hiring the mob to do Kennedy in. Other folks who stood to gain? Why, the generals of course; general motors, general dynamics, general electric, etc, and ALL defense industry. Sound familiar? It should, it’s what’s happening today, only no one was assassinated, except for 4000 American soldiers, of course. Oh, in Kennedy’s case no one was brought to justice and it was all blamed on Oswald. In bush’s case, the “terrorists” are being blamed, and of course anyone who questions bush.
Nancy and Steny are dancing? While Iraq burns? While good people are dying? WTF?
