File this under the category of "oh really":
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., admitted Thursday that she had underestimated the willingness of Republicans to stand behind President Bush’s Iraq policy despite the drubbing the GOP took in the polls in 2006.
“The assumption I made was that the Republicans would soon see the light,” she said. Instead, the minority stuck to the president’s war policy in the face of unrelenting pressure from congressional Democrats and powerful lobbying campaigns by anti-war groups.
Bush has consistently refused to accept any limitations on his authority to direct military operations in Iraq, or on funds destined for the war effort. Democrats have been unable to muster enough votes to force him to accept a timetable for withdrawal of combat troops or a change in their mission in Iraq.
“That was a revelation to me, because I felt the American peoples’ voices were so strong and still are in this regard that I hoped that with some compromise and reaching out there might be some change in direction,” Pelosi said. “But they are sticking with the president on this.”
The GOP is organized, it operates as a party. I hate to quote Red State again, but I’m gonna have to:
Let me put this in very stark terms: there is no Democratic Party in Congress. There are, instead, a bare majority of Congressmen and Senators who have banded together in order to gather power, influence, and money. Which is fine, as far as it goes – except that they are not actually using any of the resources that they are gathering to benefit the groups and causes who worked to put them in power. At best they are operating under terms of enlightened self-interest, albeit a very small-minded version of it: they are keeping their geographical constituents as sweet as is necessary to ensure re-election. And the Republicans know all of this, and will use this knowledge to pass the bills that we feel the country needs to thrive. And all of this is why 2007 was such a horrible legislative year for the progressive movement – and why 2008 will be no better for them.
The Democrats don’t know how to operate like a party; the Republicans do. The Democrats lost the energy bill by one vote because they couldn’t get Mary Landrieu, the most vulnerable Democrat in the Senate who’s going to need every bit of help she can get from the party next year not to lose her seat, to toe the line. Cracking the whip, hanging together and using their leverage to enforce party discipline — it’s just not what they do.
Recognizing that this is how the GOP functions is not that tough, it’s been evident to many for years, and if anybody thought they were going to abandon Bush (and the war) in sufficient numbers to end it they were kidding themselves.
A realistic appraisal of how the Republicans operate is probably a good first step toward combating them. Acting like a real party is probably a good second.

Gee, you think!?
*gah* I’m tired of Ms. Pelosi’s dismal foresight and lack of action…
So why did Pelosi fund the damn war? She has the power to simply not let the funding reach the floor. Honestly!
CT, I am tired of her action. I’d prefer INaction!
“Democratic leadership” is an oxymoron!
Shouldn’t the title of this be “Pelosi says she miscalculated her own determination to cave on Iraq”?
Translation: I thought the Republicans would cave just as quickly as we would have, had we been in their position.
exactly!
And simultaneously insulting our intelligence.
DC cocktail parties and such…that is the problem. Pelosi is/has been played for the fool that she is, or the conniver that she is. I’m just not sure. Wolfette in sheep’s clothing comes to mind. Stupid comes to mind too.
Mary Landrieu is the home Senator for numerous refineries why would she vote against Big Oil’s interests…
Actually Pelosi had a cunning plan. She engineered votes that made it easy to pass the Republican versions of legislation and difficult for Democratic ones. The idea was this would confuse the Republicans into submission.
I want Pelosi gone, and I want Hoyer gone. Look at them dancing. Who the hell do those two people think they are? They are in reality power mongering enablers working together. Dorks.
Jane, thanks for the h/t! Just noticed it.
So, is she going to do things differently now?
Pelosi is an embarassment.
I believe McClatchy has something along those lines:
This is how the GOP kept the Senate. Illegal election activities on the ground, directed from DC, and illegal obstruction of efforts to bring the crooks to justice.
Can’t omit Rahmbo…
Leaders who miscalculate the opposition get defeated. It’s a basic concept .
Nancy, repeat after me: “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, same on me.” But you’ve been using the they-fooled-me excuse a dozen times. It no longer washes.
So true. What is interesting is that the Republicans are not acting like a party in the presidential race. Think of the 2000 election, when Bush had his support lined up and complete by spring of 1999. That was a real top-down operation. They had Time run a big piece on the shrub in early January, almost as soon as the dust had settled on the disastrous 1998 election. This time round they are all acting as independent entrepreneurs, the way the Democrats have done since Carter pulled it off in 1976.
It’s really curious to see the disconnect between the Presidential and Congressional rethug parties. I think that’s why so many of the critters are getting out to make some big bucks (or so they hope) while the graft is still for the getting.
It boggles the mind that Pelosi didn’t see this coming. I think she did, but had some wishful hopes.
Gawd…I can’t even go there and be civil!
Don’t taze me, Rahmbro!
Landslide these people, people!!!!
Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner.
GOP won’t “get it,” until Pelosi makes them pay the consequences.
In Pelosi’s defense, advocacy is easy. Leaderizing is hard work.
Actually, the real translation is as follows:
“I did exactly what my Republican cronies/Corporate masters wished of me and am using my so-called “incompetence” as a smokescreen to disguise that fact. And as usual, you stupid peasants in the Democratic base are falling for it like the suckers you are! Haw! Haw! Haw!”
I admit I may be wrong about the Haw Haws. Nancy may be more of a “girlish giggler”.
more caving today:
House drops Democrats’ guidelines to pass minimum tax relief
from LA Times http://feeds.latimes.com/~r/la…..8605.story
House lawmakers today agreed to spare more than 20 million taxpayers from the alternative minimum tax this year, bowing to Republican demands that the $50 billion in tax relief not be offset with any other tax increases.
“GOP won’t “get it,” until Pelosi makes them pay the consequences.”
But what will it take to make Pelosi get it?
i don’t believe she really thinks this, i think this is spin.
1) it doesn’t make any sense. does she not read atrios? they didn’t plan to end the occupation – ever.
2) how can she think that american voices are going to sway the Rs in congress, when they don’t sway her?
3) this is just another variation of “let’s blame everything on the Rs so that the voters will really hate them come nov. 2008 and vote for us”
infuriating. because the dems are organized. they’re just organized against us (with a few exceptions).
Shorter: Pelosi takes another Channel #Iraq69 blood bath.
Gee, that all sounds so, so, so… mean. And not polite. And, and, harsh, and all. Nancy wanted to just make friends, you know… And they PROMISED that they’d play fair…
Feh.
yeah, it is though.
remember representative stark?
I’m not sure I buy the conspiracy theory in Pelosi’s case. In the case of high-ranking Senate Dems, yes. But not with Pelosi in the House. This could, of course, be wishful thinking.
Short answer, more people reading FDL and contributing.
Cool, let’s pile on more debt to our Kids… What’re we at… $455,000 per household already…
Dump her!!! She is a failure!! She needs to go away. There is no convincing her. She is an egotistical, cocktail partaying, sell outying, failure. She has had chance after chance, and she is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Dump her!! See ya!! Ba-Bye! Sayonara! Whatever! She has proven to be an ineffectual, incipid……Zero!!!
So now that Pelosi has learned the error of her ways she will reach out to those in the netroots who got it right, right?
The House just gave Bush what he wanted.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..id=topnews
The Party must do this, of course, because otherwise the Party looks sissified and the Party gets less popular, which hurts the Party’s chances in November.
So the Party needs and feeds off of the fresh meat of new troops to sustain itself.
Just picture the Party as The Blob and it should come clear.
Dump her.
Hugh, keep dreaming.
All Pelosi had to do was read her messages from her constituency. They told her in detail ten thousand times over. They protested her San Francisco office. They held up signs, yelled, e-mailed, phoned, wrote, published, marched and she saw and heard nothing. She knew. Yep, she knew.
Because the DSCC can threaten her with no help. I think it would make up for Big Oil’s money. Besides, Landrieu’s opponent is a flip-flopping party switcher, who Turdblossom convinced to switch parties to take on Landrieu.
Oh! I get it now. The Blob. No spine.
Why would she assume the Republicans would see the light with their heads so far up their asses?
That photo is nauseating and a hundred bucks says whatever song they’re dancing to sucks…
New blood. Edwards! Dodd!
We are not going to take this crap anymore!!!
The news reporters say, once again, “Bush won. He got what he wanted.” Maybe Reid and Pelosi are addicted to failure. It fits like a comfortable old shoe.
She obviously doesn’t know how to run her people and she should go.
Why would the repukes listen to the people? They never have and they never will. Their constituency is not ” the people” but the corporations.
I guess she doesn’t get that does she?
Pelosi couldn’t give a shit and doesn’t hear us in any case. She’s in her bubble, dontcha know. Maybe she’ll come out if she sees Sheehan gaining on her:
July, 2008:
NANCY
Ew. This Sheehan character is getting in the way now. I might actually have to come out and — ugh — talk to the little people.
LBJ’s ghost seen walking the House and Senate chambers, holding his in despondent bent.
who is pelosi’s constituency?
The DSCC can’t threaten Pelosi at all. That’s the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and they don’t give any help to members of the House.
Rahm and his old pals at the DCCC, on the other hand . . .
Here are the Democrats who did not cave:
Abercrombie, Ackerman, Allen, Andrews, Arcuri, Baca, Baldwin,
Becerra, Bishop (NY), Blumenauer, Boswell, Brady (PA), Braley (IA), Butterfield, Capps, Capuano, Cardoza, Carnahan, Castor, Clarke, Clay, Cleaver, Cohen, Conyers, Costello, Courtney, Crowley, Cummings, Davis (IL), DeFazio, DeGette, Delahunt, DeLauro, Doggett, Doyle, Duncan, Ellison, Engel, Eshoo, Farr, Fattah, Filner, Frank (MA), Green, Al, Grijalva, Gutierrez, Hall (NY), Hare, Harman, Higgins, Hinchey, Hirono, Hodes, Holt, Honda, Inslee, Israel, Jackson (IL), Jackson-Lee (TX), Johnson (GA), Jones (OH), Kagen, Kaptur, Kennedy, Kilpatrick, Klein (FL), Langevin, Lantos, Larson (CT), Lee, Lewis (GA), Lipinski, Loebsack, Lofgren (Zoe), Lowey, Maloney (NY), Matsui, McCarthy (NY), McCollum (MN), McDermott, McGovern, McNerney, Meek (FL), Meeks (NY), Michaud, Miller (NC), Miller (George), Moore (WI), Moran (VA), Murphy (CT), Murphy (Patrick), Nadler, Napolitano, Neal (MA), Oberstar, Obey, Olver, Pallone, Pascrell, Payne, Perlmutter, Price (NC), Rahall, Rangel, Richardson, Rothman, Roybal-Allard, Ryan (OH), Sánchez (Linda T.), Sánchez (Loretta), Sarbanes, Schakowsky, Schiff, Scott (VA), Serrano, Shea-Porter, Sherman, Sires, Slaughter, Smith (WA), Solis, Stark, Stupak, Sutton, Tauscher, Thompson (MS), Tierney, Towns, Tsongas, Udall (NM), Van Hollen, Velázquez, Wasserman Schultz, Waters, Watson, Watt, Waxman, Weiner, Welch (VT), Wu, Wynn, Yarmuth.
Please ignore my 53. My mistake — I misread NelsonAlgren’s comment.
More evidence of the long term effects from the Kool Aid drinkers at
the DLC… the netroots have stepped up to assume the role of a proper
party by an old method known as discussion of the issues and principles
involved… pretty radical stuff.
You’re right. I’m wrong. I stand corrected.
Biatch! She doesn’t deserve to kiss Cindy Sheehan’s feet. Ever!
Whether or not she had good intentions, we cannot afford to have people in leadership positions who show such a woeful lack of ability to recognize blatant signals and change tactics accordingly.
A realistic appraisal of how the Republicans operate is probably a good first step toward combating them.
Republicans operate like a criminal conspiracy and prostitution gang. And having voted for a number of (moderate) Republicans in the past, yeah I do feel like an idiot. Really.
Hope Nancy has John Dean’s “Conservatives without Conscience” as her next ‘must read’ book. It’s invaluable.
That’s good. I speak of the attitude of the others — the ones who cave — when I mention The Blob.
Her constituents voted 70-30 to impeach Bush and Cheney, in an advisory vote to our elected Congressional representatives, in November 2005. Pelosi is disregarding the express wishes of her constituents while pandering to The Corporations.
And to Dick Cheney. She is bloodthirsty and ineffectual, a rather remarkable combination.
But there’s an alternative: Cindy Sheehan
You were much nicer than I would have been.
I would have said to file it under “no shit!”
Rep. Stark? I’ve forgotten.
LS @1
re fire in OEOB:
hmmm …. fire in electrical closet: how about an overloaded circuit (too many shredders today, eh?)
and, the in the 1st hour, DC fire dept accidently said the fire was “next to Addington’s office”
but now “location has not been identified.
and, now tonight DC fire marshall announced that “Secret Service will conduct the investigation”
anyone remember the “electrical” fire at DOJ Main on March 19? “the fire in the building which houses the Information Management and Security Staff, as well as the Policy and Planning Staff, of the Justice Management Division”
It has to be noted that Harry Reid has been playing the same they-fooled-me-again game as Nancy. Nobody can be as stupid as they claim to be.
Thanks Jane, I missed selise’s earlier comment.
Pelosi Rebukes Stark for Iraq Comments
damn. this is one of those times i want to be told my hypothesis is all wet.
:>
From wiki:
This was after pressure from Pelosi.
Oh, I recall Nancy in an interview with Russert in 2006; he wasn’t so easy on her and she had difficulty thinking on her feet.
So we could very well be dealing with a dim bulb. Although that doesn’t excuse her.
Iraq is hardly the only thing Pelosi “miscalculated”. How many hundreds of thousands have died in this war, Ms. Speaker?
It is not.
Forgive me Teddy. I worked on Nancy’s first campaign. We were all so green then. Who would ever have thought…..I was surprised she one the initial election. All those years I lived in San Francisco, I was in the 8th District. That’s a very liberal swarth of geography.
And Romney tells us today he supports the foreign policy of George Bush. So has Nancy Pelosi.
another slight possibility… the Democratic Party also supports corporate tyranny in the ‘homeland’ and imperial wars abroad, and that is why their leadership helps the (R)’s put these agendas in place.
crazy, I know, crazy talk…but it would explain a lot that is otherwise mystifying Left Blogistan…
Hiya Jane! Howdy y’all.
I got stuck logging in. Does this work on IE7? I had to switch to FF.
Oh, yeah. The truth is not to be spoken if the republicans can get Limbaugh to react. I think they’re doing whatever they can to make Rush shut up. But then he only talks about what kiss asses they are. They cannot win by appeasement. Not ever.
I’m watching CSPAN’s coverage of the Jone’s case…I am boiling…over….
if anybody thought they were going to abandon Bush (and the war) in sufficient numbers to end it they were kidding themselves.
Pelosi probably thought they would have sufficient regard for their political skin to start distancing themselves from Bush. She did not reckon on the GOP having become more like a cult than a political party and impervious to facts.
I like Pelosi, she tried to replace Harman and Hoyer, she just didn’t have the votes. She and Conyers passed a FISA bill that does not have telecom immunity. She is doing some good stuff in spite of the fact that Hoyer and Emanuel are undermining her every chance they can get.
“Does this work on IE7? I had to switch to FF.”
Sometimes, Cassie. I have had some problems with it. Now I usually log in via Firefox.
there was this. (youtube)
then there was this. (youtube)
then there was this. (fdl thread)
Hi All ,,,PLEASE help,,, anyone know where today press (dana) briefing can be seen in video I google but no link are working .its all a black hole
Thank-You FDL (puppy)
bigbob
I can’t get the
Elmer Fuddimage out of my head of Reid and Pelosi talking about “wwwascally wwwepublicans.”Pelosi DID replace Harman, although it was part of a “normal” rotation, but it’s beginning to appear that Harman at least wrote some very sternly worded letters about the CIA tapes destruction before it happened. Gotta wonder about that….
Here’s some of it…
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/061471.php
Nancy responds:
“Well, it’s the President’s war. He’s the one killing the troops. Not us. Oh no, you can’t blame us. We’re only paying, supporting and enabling him to do that nasty stuff that my beautiful mind won’t permit me to think about with any clarity. I mean if we allowed ourselves to actually think about what he was doing, how could we pay for it?”
is it at crooks and liars? they have all kinds of stuff like that.
Nancy is excusing her failure but what is she going to do to fix it? Probably nothing I believe because she is in bed with and invested in all the same friends and all the same companies the GOP is.
The problem is her friends are idiots and ruining the country.
Dump Pelosi, now.
She and Harry Reid have had an entire year in the majority to educate the American people that cutting funding for Bush’s illegal and immoral occupation is not undercutting our troops in the field. They’ve made a hash of it, particularly by allowing Democrats to talk about “supporting the troops” as if it had anything to do with funding.
They have squandered an entire year of lost lives — many more Iraki than American — and lost treasure. We need new Congressional leadership.
What, and ruin her Merry Christmas?
Go to Think Progress.
YouTube, not sure how much of it is here
she replaced harman, but she put in reyes (isn’t he the guy who didn’t know if AQ was shia or sunni?). if she’d put holt in as chair of the intelligence committee that would have made sense.
in august she and conyers and reyes forced the PAA fisa bill through the house while blocking the better bill.
this fall/winter she and conyers and reyes pushed a fucked up version of the RESTORE ACT through committees and the house while blocking holt’s very good fisa bill. the RESTORE ACT was blocked by the republicans, and then progressive caucus got behind holt and forced the leadership to make changes in the RESTORE ACT to make it acceptable.
the house leadership has been very, very bad on fisa (with the exception of telco immunity).
Here’s the rub. Pelosi’s “whatever the hell she’s been doing” agenda, is destroying the country that W has worked so hard to ruin. It is bad , 360 degrees…..
I find myself having a difficult time deciding which is the most gutless and distasteful leader of my party. Nancy or Harry?
This article illustrates how lamely led is the Democratic component of congress. They want to repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax, which hits mostly the middle class. Of course tax-cuts-for-the-rich Republicans oppose tax cuts for the middle class. But rather than savaging them with their own past rhetoric, Nancy is asking Harry to back off:
What kind of leadership is that?
Nancy had better start coming up with something better than excuses if she wants to hold onto her job. It sure would be embarrassing to get into the history books as the leader of the “Spineless Congress”.
Thank you, selise. Now I sure remember. I thought about you today when I was reading about Cleopatra, and learned that her daughter’s name was Seline. (daughter with Mark Anthony)
Narry Reidosi.
Nancy Pelosi opposed the Iraq war back in 2002. I really admire her, although not her support for Wynn or some other things. I really think she, Conyers, and Waxman are the best we have. Well, Barbara Boxer on a good day.
Reid on the other hand ……..
I think they want to try and sustain and pin the war on Bush with the least possible fallout on the Democrats. So the party wins big or bigger at the expense — the death — of more troops.
Ain’t gonna happen….get rid of her. She is a failure.
How can we help C Sheenan put the fear into Pelosi, not just money but tactial help?
We need to drive the message that the Democratical leadership is a big part of the problem and must be replaced, eliminated is better.
Can I have some? What you are smoking that is?
The best thing we can do is make sure Donna Edwards wins her primary. That we we show the Dem leadership that we have the power to put our own in office.
white house daily brief.
is that what you wanted?
it’s the c-span archive. although now that they’ve gone to use windows media, the webstream doesn’t work for me (the real player streams worked fine). hope you have better luck
Structuring the August FISA bill so the Republican version would pass.
Caving now on Iraq for what it is now the fourth or fifth time.
Her belittling of the base as “advocates”
Her continued failure to reach out to the netroots which told her this would happen
Taking impeachment off the table
Sorry, but I’m blanking on the good stuff part.
Agree wholeheartedly!
To me, Nancy’s current actions/inactions completely wipe out her stance in 2002.
Conyers has somewhat incredibly become a spineless wimp who just does Nancy’s bidding, lest (speculation) she remove him as Chair of the Judiciary Committee.
Just what are her priorities besides self preservation? This only helps the rich at the expense of the middle class! Nancy is a GOPer I really can’t believe that I didn’t see this before.
GOPers always put the rich before the poor and middle class you can’t be a Dem if you do that and you can’t be a GOPer unless you do that.
Now that just screams Photoshop.
I don’t think Pelosi and her advisers fairly value how much cover, she provides to the rest of the Vichy Dems.
I think that is her most egregious offense to date…
Damm I need some better insults! Of course it is hard to shame a person without shame.
The Congress offers Bush $50 billion for the wars a week or so ago and the prez turns it down. Today the Congress offers Bush $70 billion for the wars. Bush accepts it. Oh yes, real leadership. If Bush had held out for more, he would probably have gotten it.
but if pelosi had voted for the war, would she have been able to keep her position? wouldn’t her constituents revolt?
is it possible that she is only as progressive as she has to be for her CD? she seems to be so much more conservative than her constituents.
What else has the Bush Dog Pelosi done? She voted against the patriots of MoveOn.Org. She voted for the fundamentalist Christian Recognition. She just passed the Worst Energy Bill Ever giving the Oil Companies even more, while stopping Solar and renewables.
Nancy is controlled by the lobbyists of K-Street. Her chief of staff is married to Howard Wolfson, Hillary’s campaign manager and K-street Bush Dog.
This is why you never play nice or even pretend to play nice with Republicans, Speaker Pelosi.
Blunt Applauds Passage of Republican-Crafted SCHIP Extension
OT: I have a new post up about teen pregnancy and Jamie Lynn Spears.
Good question. Personally I’m better on the theoretical/philosophical side; coming up with messages. And I could give money. We need folks who are activists to pitch in on that end.
Unrelenting pressure? When did that happen? I mean I know spend about a quarter of every 24 hour period in a state of total unconsciousness, but still…
Hello???
OT
Finally documentation that C-SPAN is wingnut, which has been apparent to me for quite some time.

IMHO, Nancy knows that her job is safe as long as she does what Steny Hoyer tells her.
Testify! Brother Testify! We have been WRONGED! We have been Deceived. We have been Cheated!
The Toad Princess thinks her grand ball of corruption will go on forever. She thinks that she can keep fooling the American people with half measures and last minute surrendering.
It is her weakness that enables Bush.
I don’t understand why this is so hard to comprehend…perhaps most of the “Democrats” aren’t really Dems, and they are there in order to destroy any Liberal agendas from within.
If this is true, then Dems do not need to start behaving more like Repubes. The solution is within the Blue America “more and better Democrats” theme. We should focus all energy on that goal instead of trying to change the behaviour of saboteurs.
Sure, we can pressure them here or there because they know they can’t expose themselves too much, or else they won’t be elected anymore, but we pretty much know what’s going to happen now, right?
Will anyone argue with the notion that the DemocratIC Party has been decimated over the last 20 years or so, not counting the Dean years? Many of the same names that “led the Party through this time are now our Party elders. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
There is no insult big enough,
“Words will never hurt me”…
Sticks and bombs that they authorize…well, that is another question, because Karma is a biatch…Blood Money.. that is what it is all about. Blood money, and on their hands…massive death sentences for people still alive now….and innocent people will die because of their legislation tonight….children will die…they
ok, dov12348 – this is hilarious.
note to hugh – not to be missed.
will now be doomed, because of this..that is what this is..
Merry Xmas Nancy and George, and Dick and all of you….
Hugh – you are a whole lot more tolerant of Nancy Pelosi than this old brat – I remain appalled at her lack of courageous leadership and cannot imagine ever supporting her in the future.
Thank-you selise Iou one
woohoo. that is a great diary pups.
hiya suzanne!
I wonder if Baptist Minister Huck has anything to say about a fellow Southern Baptist family in desperate need of counseling, an intervention, and or an exorcism.
I do love it when hypocrites who want to tell me how to live get embarrassed by their own flock.
good evening Suzanne
The picture with this post should become Blue America’s “logo.” Man, that’s funny. The two of them can’t even figure out how to lead on the dance floor.
g’evening pups *waving to everyone*
And don’t forget the SCHIP caving in the Senate yesterday. That made me absolutely livid. Hard to keep track of all this caving, huh?
Gah! That is just a chop to the throat. You can hear him cackling and rubbing his hands together.
It’s almost enough to make a person not want to march anymore.
If Hugh is still around, I directed our Phoenix Talk show host on 1480 Progressive Radio to your list of Bush Scandals and starting the first of the year he will be addressing one every day next year. He does not have enough business days for the full list.
what happened with schip?
It is very easy for someone who does not understand the rules of the House and has never had to operate in that environment to have strong liberal opinions and do their Monday Morning Quarterbacking from the comfort of their laptop keyboard. A closer look at Mrs. Pelosi’s first year would reveal that she has not done a particularly bad job overall given the circumstances. The same people who are critical of Democrats now would be beside themselves demanding more open discussion of issues in the House if Democrats were to act in lock step the way the Republicans have acted. All it would do is force total gridlock and give the Republicans a legitimate point to take to voters next Fall saying Democrats can’t govern. As it is they cannot say that. The real problem is not in the House, it is in the Senate. The House has been sending legislation over but it can’t get any traction in the Senate due to Republicans’ use of Senate filibuster threats there. My beef is with Senator Harry Reid. If he would force Republicans to filibuster he could point to that and say Republicans are at the root of Congress’ inability to get government business done. So lets tone it down on Pelosi and turn up the heat on Senator Reid and Senate Republicans.
did you see who is visiting for book salon on the 22nd?
Hey Suzanne, (waving back). I can’t make Late, late night later and couldn’t last night. Just wanna say I LOVE Bob dylan. But didn’t vote for that song. While it’s a classic song, indeed an anthem, in my view it doesn’t have the edge to make it a topper in the “protest” genre — say, like Masters of War. But I think neo nominated it and he was on the Phil Ochs bandwagon, so he’s cool. Good for him.
Speaking of Phil Ochs, it remains my contention that Phil Ochs is the outright, overall winner. I can no longer communicate with you here. please direct all questions, comments and correspondence to my counsel, David Boise and Theodore Olsen.
Thank you.
Thanks, selise. Glad you liked it.
The goopers are politicians. 10 months from now when they’re lookin’ at debacle numbers that won’t leave them with enough bodies in the Senate for a good poker quorum, they’ll hand the voters (and the dems) bush’s political head on a platter, to try to salvage something out of the tsunami.
That is, if we’re room-temperature-IQ smart enough to nominate someone who’ll have the principles and the courage to flay the hide off their lying asses over Iraq.
If we put up Clinton, she will talk about anything BUT Iraq, and that will be new life for these assholes. The election could very well be close enough for them to joyfully turn it over to the Supreme Court again, and we know what happens then.
wow!
is there an online audio stream? i’d love to listen to that!
http://thehill.com/leading-the…..12-19.html
Philosopherguy, how would things be different today with regard to the funding of Bush’s Irak Occupation if Dennis Hastert were still Speaker? What single thing about the occupation has Mrs. Pelosi’s Speakership changed?
loved it. if hugh isn’t around i’ll mail him the link. i’m sure he would love to see it.
Yes. I need to go back & look for the link on the Brain Lehrer show, review it, and be ready with some pointed Qs. Trouble is, it’s so difficult to figure out how to word the Q to provide as little wiggle room as possible. And in the blog format, the guest can just ignore any Q he wants.
Would you be interested in working together on this?

The Nancy you see today is not the same Nancy when she began. She used to work in the background for the Democratic Party and was effective and necessary to many successful campaigns. She was on target and truly represented her constituency her first years in Congress. Nancy was approachable. As she moved into different roles she became less effective. The areas where she was most effective were set aside so her strongest qualities were not required by her new roles.
This happens often in companies. Effective people are moved into new roles, supposed to be moving upward, and instead their ability is compromised by the new position. I see this in Pelosi. She is beyond her best abilities. The role requires something that is in conflict with what she can genuinely offer.
Personally, I don’t like putting someone in a position because they are the first woman or minority. It is unfair to them and to the rest of us who expect a better performance. “First” is too critical a role.
“Hi my name is Nancy and i am a Demoholic. I am powerless over Republicanism.”
First step on the road to recovery (of the Democratic Party) is to admit you have A PROBLEM. Can’t fix what you don’t know is broken! You Go Girl!
when that first came out i called her office for a confirmation or denial. i got neither.
but, philosopherguy, this is a Pelosi-bashing thread.
There will be other, Reid-bashing threads, have no doubt.
Sorry philosopherguy, no laptop here — just someone with a bit of understanding with regard to the House rules, and who has had to operate in an environment of (at times) extreme political polarization (though not the US House of Representatives).
The House Rules did not mandate that Pelosi come down on Pete Stark for calling out Bush and the GOP.
The House Rules did not mandate that Pelosi “take impeachment off the table.”
The House Rules did not mandate that Pelosi roll over on the August FISA debates.
I could go on, but I trust you get the picture. You are right that Reid is doing worse, but that’s no reason to give Pelosi a pass.

Jeff Farias is on from 4-7pm MST. Jeff is a former board member of DFA here in Phoenix, former Chair for a Democratic district and does great local radio
We could double team him. Firgure out a list of Qs in advance & both of us ask them. I might be able to get a few others to join in, and perhaps then we can corner him.
Actually I found that “Hugh’s list” right here — but I couldn’t recall who posted it. Was it Hugh? And was that the same Hugh you’re speaking of?
If so, I need to thank him! Thanks, Hugh, wherever you are! A fantastic list! The folks on DKos loved his list; I posted it in another thread there too where it got lots of rave reviews.
Hmmmmm. Thanks for the diligence.
Something seems to have taken the wind out of Conyers sails.
Really. Boner is bragging. Malkin is crowing. It’s embarrasing, really. And so frustrating. We worked hard on that trying to get the first veto overturned and even helped flip a few votes. We can help this party. We HAVE helped this party. And they just piss on us. Over and over and over.
They have a minimum wage in Irak?
Please re-read my inquiry: “about the occupation.”
Late Nite upstairs
Is that an excuse for inaction? She could have stopped any bill she wanted, she is, well sort of, speaker of the house. Nothing was stopped. She allowed things to come to vote that were absurd and there is no explanation for the ramblings about why she will not perform her constitutional duty to begin the impeachment hearings for the executive branch.
Until that time, don’t waste any more of ours.
Yes, good catch; that’s actually precisely the quote I had in mind.
TeddySanFran, the answer is nothing. And my earlier comment still stands, they way our system in Congress works requires that legislation pass BOTH the House and the Senate. And, if you have a President like Mr. Bush who stands ready to veto legislation he doesn’t approve of, you need enough of a majority in Congress to be able to override the veto. Mrs. Pelosi cannot do a single thing ON HER OWN to change the situation in Iraq. It would be nice if people understood enough about how Congress works to understand that.
For selise, not QG:
Oh, please, there are many students of Congress here. Do not come around and insult our intelligence. Thanks.
I think occam’s hatchet put it best at dkos:
“Which part of ‘cataclysmic fight to the death‘” do you not understand?
PELOSI/HOYER/REID ARE A DISASTER FOR THE PEACE MOVEMENT AND FOR PROGRESSIVES. THEY USED THE POWER THE VOTERS GAVE THEN IN 2006 TO STOP THE WAR…TO ENABLE THE BUSHCO MOB WHO THEY HAVE SOLD OUT TO.
NOTHING SHORT OF POLITICAL PANDERING
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IS GET THE LEADERSHIP ON BOARD WITH A PROGRESSIVE AGENDA IN WRITING A RESOLUTION THEY CANNOT WORM OUT OF PERIOD.
Even the Republicans are astounded at Democratic capitulationism under Pelosi’s leadership.
Thanks, Teddy. You had me on a search there:))
please take a look at this diary i wrote on the what happened with fisa in the house this summer. did i get anything wrong?
hey ProfessorFoland – i left you a comment at emptywheel this morning.
my apologies. i have nothing.
Hey, man — you don’t have to worry about a veto to NOT fund a war. If you DON’T fund, there’s NOTHING to veto.
She can freeze funding Bush needs her OK to pass a budget. Just because Newt did it and it was unpopular does not mean it would be unpopular again. She can squeeze any one who does not vote her way because the house makes the budget the senate can say yes no or lets haggle.
How many votes could Nancy get if she starts canceling pork for people who support the war?
I would give Nancy points if she tried and failed. But she won’t try, she just assumes that she can’t.
Nader was right. The Democratic leadership takes true progressives and liberals for granted. The grand pooh bahs figure, where else are they going to go.
Right what Ted said!
DING!
(No apologies necessary, selise. None at all. I too try to find something, but there’s nothing.)
it’s embarrassing ‘cuz i really ought to know better.
Oooh, I made the quotable wisdom list! I need a little bowing-with-appreciation-for-the-honor emoticon–domo…
Though I think Marie Roget showed me up as a rank amateur at cynicism.
I hope Cindy Sheehan puts boots on the ground in CA. Time to retire Miss Nancy.
LS@#1…WTF; another Reichstag fire? :o)
Brace yourselves as she will soon approve the salary increase in the mid of night.let’s work to get her out of office & don’t forget Steny Hoyer, this guy must go down in the next election cycle.
i didn’t think it was a statement about your cynicism. just that we are all rank amateurs when it comes to the level of cynicism the time require.
and i have found your advice “release your inner cynic” to be quite helpful this past year. just wanted to say thanks.
‘Night, y’all…
night! i emailed hugh the link to your diary. thanks again!
TEDDY
I CANNOT IMAGINE HOW SOMEONE PAYING ATTENTION COULD MISTAKE HOW INEFFECTIVE THE STRATEGY OF COOPERATION IS. THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING. PELOSI HAS BEEN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AISLE AS HOYER. WHEN THE NAJORITY IS SLIM A TIGHTER UNITY IS A MANDATE. PARTMERING WITH THE OPPOSTION IS NOT AN OPTION.
YOU HAVE A LEGISLATIVE AGENDA YOU GOT TO GET IT DONE. WHAT WAS DONE WAS AN AGENDA FOR THE PRESIDENTS PARTY.
1. STOP THE BLOODY WAR
2. STOP THE OCCUPATION OF FOREIGN COUNTRIES
3. GET AN ENERGY POLICY THATWEANS US OF DEPENDENCY TO FORIEGN OIL
4. UPHOLD THE RULE OF LAW
5. PUT A LEGISLATIVE MUZZLE ON WALL STREET ASAP
6. REBUILD AMERICAS BROKEN INFRASTRUCTURE
7, ESTABLISH A UNIVERSAL SAFETY NET FOR THE POOR, ELDERLY AND DISABLED
8. REVERSE THE PRIVATIZATION OF GOVERNMENT SERVICES
Bless you Peterr – you write so beautifully and I wish I could express my change of heart – or should I say bruised heart regarding Nancy Pelosi – just half as eloquently as you have.
Excellent work!
THAT IS THE BEST EVALUATION YET FOR THIS HORRIFIC FAILURE 22% APPROVAL FOR CONGRESS. WHILE THE CRIME FAMILY IS BEING OUTED MAYBE SOME COUNSELING AS TO PROCEEDURE WOULD ASSIST MOVING LEGISLATION. THE IMPEACHMENT HAS TO BE IMPLEMENTED OR SHE MUST BEGONE. TOO MANY LIVES ARE AT STAKE. THE DOJ IS NOT RESPONSIVE TO HEINOUS CRIMES AGAINST OUR OWN BY OUR OWN RAPE BEATING AND KIDNAP!!!
hey big brother. all caps is real hard to read and is considered to be ’shouting’. can you please not submit comments that are all caps please. thanks
PLEASE READ 165 IT COVERS LEADERSHIP RULES SHE DID NOT USE WHICH WERE AT HER DISPOSAL. CHIP O’NIEL AND OTHER LEADERSHIP FOLKS HAD SJHILLS SHE IS NO ADEPT AT. POLITICS IS AN ART. YOU ARE OVER SIMPLIFYING AS I SEE IT. OVER AND OVER AND OVER DISAPPOINTED AN ELECTORATE THAT WANTS THE WAR ENDED FIRST AND FOREMOST.
Yes it could be a perfectly apt title. Or “Disigenuous Democrats Continue to Make Excuses while Enabling Continual Dying and Money Hemmorhage in Iraq.”
There is a well known name for these Democratic liars. LOSERS.

What “winning” in Iraq looks like
http://www.salon.com/opinion/g…..index.html
House Roll Call December 19, 2007 Voting yes were 78 Democrats and 194 Republicans.
Voting no were 141 Democrats and 1 Republican.

So health care for Americans gets shoved into serious jeapordy, and many older Americans have at least 3 serious conditions or more for which they simply cannot afford their medicine–and often for those conditions they require two to three medications for each condition.
Many physicians simply can’t afford to care for medicare patients with the cuts already imposed by the Bush administration and the jeapordy that Dr. Bill Frist imposed on the medical care of those patients.
The kill rates of American soldiers is currently 40 soldiers per month. The rate of permanantly severe crippling orthopedic injuries is much higher. The rate of permanantly severe irreversible brain trauma and other severe neurological injuries is much higher.
The followup care for them in VAH facilities is woefully inadequate; supplies are short; room is short; and medical staffing is short.
I know Bush says “people can just go to the emergency rooms” and I also know that Bush is a pure fool and has never seen any of this disaster first hand.
Coverage of Iraq by the “main stream media” aka MSM here was about 8%, and it’s fallen precipitously which is why Republicans with all the brain power of a Ken doll are able to claim the surge has been very positive.
In fact, tens of thousands of returning refugees have no place to live today, and that’s not changing. Bush and Sessions, and Corynyn and McConnell don’t ever mention this detail. Only a fraction of millions who left have returned.
Please read this:
Iraqi Refugees Return, and Are Stranded

The Democrats are truly losers in every sense of the word as to Iraq, and a lot of people are losing their lives or living in a hell on earth because of it.
Pete, a suggestion from the mods:
You may want to break your comments into several shorter ones. The moderation filters seem to be tripping from the number of links in a single comment.
Yes. Thanks for the tip. If you know of a good blogger protocal book sort odf Emily Post Etiquitte of blogging for people without airs I will get educated. There are some tool the more experienced blogger have I would like to be able to use like how to link etcetera.
Or be more concise.
Thanks RBG
RBG–
I never had trouble naming links. About a week ago when I type http://www.firedoglake.com into the script box, the link shows up fine in the posting box, until I either hit preview or send, and then the link gets distorted to the second link which does not of course link to anywhere. I emailed FDL’s help who said he thought he knew what it was and was doing some checking, but I never heard back. It continues. I never had that problem before.
FDL
becomes
file://%22http://www.firedoglake.com///%22
when I press Preview or Send
So I can’t name the links anymore.
That’s helpful info, Pete. We will circle back on that one and see if there is something that didn’t get completely fixed.
Mac or PC and which browser are you using?
Thanks.
I’m sorry for the incomplete message, and I help on MSFT groups a lot. I should have said using Vista RTM with IE7 or Vista SP1 with IE7.
I want to make clear I didn’t have any problem since I started posting several months ago. I noticed with the new site you have to put the name in instead of being prompted (no big deal). But the crazy prefix and tail to the url which doesn’t show up at all until you see the link name after you press Preview/Send never happened until the wee hours of Sat. 12/15. I’ve searched long and hard for malware, virus; done lots of Spyware scans (One Care, AdAware) and come up empty. I also took a good look in Windows folders for something that doesn’t belong and System 32. Came up blank.
I thought if you made a link name and right clicked it the file type should be html. (HTML is not something I know much about) but the file type here when I make a link is
COM///%22 File when it should be a COM/ File
Fire Dog Lake
The last link I named rt. clicks normally. I wonder if it’s only happening in the Preview and Sending would make the link normal. I’m going to try and see with the named link above.
Thanks much for your help and the suggestion to keep the links down. I’m working on shorter posts.
Sonofagun. I puzzled over this for a week mad at myself because I have helped in Windoz groups for years and couldn’t solve it. It was a self-induced problem because the distorted url from right clicking the link>properties or trying to click the link to make sure it works only happened in preview when I checked it. My links name fine if I submit the comment.
Problem solved. Thanks very much.
How about we all send Cindy Sheehan $25 each.
That picture of Steny Hoyer dancing with Nancy Peloso pretty much says it all, doesn’t it?
Is it possible Nancy is representing ‘real democrats’ (a term used by a commenter over on Ablog last night) and not the progressive movement? What if we found out that this is what ‘real democrats’ want Nancy to do? It could explain why anyone is supporting Hillary Clinton!
All I know is I’m not going to allow Pelosi and/or Reid to weaken the Democratic Party, because this is what the neocons want. They want us divided and not strong next year so they can pick up more seats and possibly the White House. I will not give into their demands of us!
Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have been disasterously incompetent as Congressional Leaders. They absolutley do not deserve to be returned to their leadership positions, let alone their congressional seats.
And vote out the Blue DOgs with them!
Never before has a President and Vice President deserved to be impeached more than these.
Yet our Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, is working behind the scenes with House Democrats, not to build a consensus for impeachment, but to do just the opposite: to keep others from succeeding in their effort to hold this president accountable by means of impeachment.
With the FISA bill still looming in the Senate, and a new war funding bill passed with no structure in place to Bring our Troops Home, we have to show the leaders of the House and Senate that this is still our country.
Please read the petition to replace Pelosi with a Democratic Representative who will bring impeachment proceedings to the floor. A Question of Privilege under House Rules IX can declare the Speaker seat vacant.
It can be done, it must be done. We have waited long enough.
