We are honored to present the winner from the We Fight Back, 60’s Category as we close out the We Fight Back Protest Song-fest. This song received the most votes overall in addition to winning its category. Honorable mentions may show up in later posts so keep your dial turned to this station.
Buffalo Springfield’s For What Its Worth was submitted by ratbastahd, who receives ample crowing rights for his winning entry.
This song is as appropriate today as it was back in 1967. We continue to fight back and our voices are being heard. There is something happening here.
There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it’s time we stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going downThere’s battle lines being drawn
Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going downWhat a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going downParanoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going downStop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, now, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

Dodd!!!
hey neuro
Dude! -ette!!
Not Zed! 8-(
Double Dodd.
-G
That song always echoed with me as a child, even though it was recorded 10 years before i was born. But i heard it a lot as a child in the 80s. Powerful piece of work!
Yeah, another one that got my vote! Well two outta three ain’t bad…
Peter Tork!
Kudos, neuro. ‘ja tell ‘em?
The first night I thought Country Joe And The Fish would prevail.
This is a sweet version.
Alright… stayed awake until Late Late Nite…. wow the time change sure has messed up my FDL time. Going to head off to bed… see ya tomorrow. XOXO to everyone
My Dixie Chicks lost out to Pink…
I have always loved this song. I didn’t vote but was hoping it would be one of the winners.
There were so many good selections – over 160 different video’s.
G’ nite katymine.
g’nite katy
ct, there was only a few votes separating all 3 in the current category – it was the closest race and at one point there was a tie.
Aloha, Katymine!
yup
Heh, between Pink and the Dixie Chicks, right? ;-)
speaking of which… i did not know until after the votes were tabulated that our own Alicia was in the choir in the Neil Young Let’s Impeach The President video. Alicia blogged about it here and here (first link is day of making the video and the second is about the rolling stone article)
Dixie Chicks still ROCK
The story of the mother who taught her child to hate a perfect stranger
The first time I head the song “Not ready to make nice” I was driving to Las Vegas for Yearlykos #1…. with tears streaming down my face. Glad that the woman who the song was based on has been changed too.
ct, the 3 video’s in that category were pink, dixie and neil. it was neck and neck for all 3 all the way to the finish line.
Oh, sure, there was a tie…and then you just happened to find a few heretofore overlooked, uncounted votes, right? And they all happened to be for your favorite song?!
Riiight.
CT, Natalie Mains spent some time in Little Rock protesting today.
Actually, that’s way cooler… *g*
I was not the one who tabulated mommybrain.
Hanging Chads? WTF? ;-)
TBogg Alert!!
Thursday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. ET
This woman, Natalie, is beautiful. Go Natalie. I can’t believe “There’s Something Happening Here” is 1967 — I was 15!
‘West Memphis Three’…?
Just came by to see what tune I would be humming till the zzzzzz’s took over. I ran away so that Alec wouldn’t get me during the last thread. I wonder if his parents know he is bonkers? Anyhow, I folded ALL the clothes, put out the trash and the recycle and now I’m off to read and sleep. I am too pooped to walk my puppies and they are very sad :>(
g’nite gnome
WM 3, yes.
‘nite Suzanne. Looks like everyone else is snoozing too.
Dang I love that song!
Protest. Hum.
The geniouses here shut me off on the Chris Lehane fluff piece. So as the pile on occurs down there, I can not respond. Yep that is progressive behavior. I pitty the troops in Iraq that have to depend on the likes of the people here to get them home to safety. At least in my war in my generation we understood the urgency of getting the guys home.
Party politics and a thousand other topics take precedent over the lives and saftey of the troops. I guess you just don’t care, like Pelosi and Reed, the MSM, and the Bushites. I guess I will find a more serious forum. So my farewells will be on http://mainsteamlite.blogspot.com.
You know, how much ever you wash it, the blood never comes off. Too bad you wrote about Lady Macbeth but did not understand what you wrote.
i’m still awake (with my fingers and toes crossed not everyone has gone to sleep)
I’m not familiar with the WM 3…
The (D)’s will most likely nominate warmongering, neo-con authoritarian Hillary Clinton, who will continue the senseless bloodshed in Iraq for at least 4 more years, and saber rattle the US nuclear arsenal against Iran.
And the “liberal” blogosphere will sing:
hooray for our side
Sweet, my first hat tip! Someone else wold have nominated FWIW if I hadn’t. It’s still a great song.
I’m tellin’ ya, Spork, Hill ain’t anointed yet…
hey ratbastahd, congrats! was hoping you would stop by tonight
Suz, I’m still here, and still trying to catch up. Don’t leave me everyone!
What have we done to them?
Harretz opinion piece on Israeli attitudes towards Palestinians.
Very well put.

hey christine e – hows the midwest tonight?
Commented off and one all day. now it is time for Lurking here in the BlueBayState to turn into sleeping in the same before it is time to do shoveling in the same tmr. am.
Good night all of you, late late niters, other time zones, those with snowless mornings, and can’t get enough of FDLists.
g’nite bluestateredhead
Long story. They shouldn’t be in jail at all. Another screw up on Hucksters part too.
OK – I just published my first diary at Daily Kos.
Hi Suzanne! This is my “free” time, most days. Child and wife sleeping, papers graded, french homework done, emails read and answered. Now I can “relax” by reading news that makes my blood boil.
At least I’m listening to music: 7-18-90 Grateful Dead show I attended. One of my top 5 shows, but that’s another story. *g*
I concur, I liked this snippet…
reading it now et (i even put on my glasses just for you)
just dropping in for a quick visit … have been enjoying the songs but too busy to do more than lurk. Perhaps in the new year i can splash in the Lake rather than lurk 8~)
it sure was glorious to see Dodd patriotically take a stand, wasn’t it? Lifted my spirits. Big hugs and heart-felt thanks to FDL and all the Firepups who were active in supporting him.
Santa, i want my Constitution restored. Plus, if you could, new & improved spines in most of the Democrats. I’ll support you in doling out lumps of coal if the spines aren’t possible. I’ll be sending you cookies. Luurrvv ya, Santa.
We had a nice blizzard on Sunday — a chance to catch up on reading. Most of the University Circle museums are ready for the holidays. We are going east for Christmas, where many of our family members live in Chadds Ford, PA. Still, I like it here. And I work with Democrats.
Hey, Ma’am, we have a large contingent of Bay Staters here on the Big Isle, they’d gotten tired of that routine early on… *g*
Hope I was your first recommend.
*standing on chair clapping for ET’s kos diary*
pups, that diary needs some recommends!
Nice job ET. Diane Benson still sounds like a congress woman I would like to have!
*waving to ndfg* gonna leave us any of those cookies – tex is sleeping and we have been left on our own for snacks
Wow ET –I will take this to work tomorrow and respond after work. What an effort. We love you, ET.
Congrats ET.
-G
Night gang.
-G
CTuttle, glad you enjoyed the Haaretz piece.
You pups are so kewl…
recommended, ET!
Shoots, Jump on the Shark! First post, and you’re trashing the Proprietor… Nice Job, tho! ;-)
g’nite gregb aka gsd
good job ET…
I don’t know what has possessed me but I’m watching the WH Christmas show… outside of Winona, the lot of ‘em are all people I’ve never heard of… they stopped shooting pics of the shrub when he couldn’t sit still thru the opening number..
hey alicia
Hi Suz! Saw your ‘Token’ up and thought you were out.
Aloha, GSD!
alicia – see my comment about you at 19
oh crap, thanks alicia, forgot to switch it back
i’ll stuff some cookies into the toobz, quicker than looking for a pic to post *g* Here’s what we’ve made, take your pick! Sugar cookies, peanut butter blossoms (i hate ‘em but some in-laws like them), rice krispie bars, rosettes, spritz, almond bark cookies. I’ll send milk, cocoa, & decaf along (da cow is too much at this time o night).
glad i stayed up late & checked in, was able to dash over to dailykos & give ET’s diary a recommend. Way to go, ET!
ok, gotta get some sleep, a first shift graphics temp job tomorrow & Friday. MWAH! *ndfg blows kisses at the Firepups, whom she misses greatly*
Shoots, Jump on the Shark! First post, and you’re trashing the Proprietor…
I’ve trashed this place enough times, eh suzanne, ct…?
alicia was who submitted the neil video – and did not tell us that she was in it when she did so
ndfg, that noise you hear is my tummy growling after reading that wonderful cookie list
et, lets just let bygones be bygones (wink)
ET, I recommended your diary and left a comment. Good luck at the Big Orange.
good night, all..
well, I did say I was biased…
CTuttle, are you still in the Islands? Which one? Looking forward to our winter break on Maui!!
‘Night Coastie.
g’nite OC
I certainly doff my hat, Sir! *g*
Da Big Isle, ya can wave at me from the southern shore of Maui…! ;-)
Those were the days.
Rec’d the diary. Nicely done.
Excellent diary, ET, you certainly have a way of charming the management! *g*
Aloha, OC! I recommended your dairy too, ET! I’m sure Markos will reply… ;-)
just got back from taken token out to save a redwood tree – its finally raining and the wind is picking up
I like the Big Isle too! Didn’t the peaks recently get some snow? I’m ready for some Aloha Attitude, and some sun.
Another recent protest song I like: Ben Harper: Fight Outta You
I gotta remember Ben’s mantra as I read about the Vichy Dem Capitulators. WTF are they thinking? Is this really their “winning” strategy? So many bad decisions. At least I read 2 pieces of more positive developments (but even a stopped clock is right twice a day!) – Rep. Reyes forcing the CIA’s hand with subpoena power, and Reid keeping the Senate in session over the break.
Heh…
good evening dear friends. am i too late for the zed?
Aren’t ya gonna share at least the other four? :~(
They were indeed. What a collection of voices that great time had. Giants walked the earth in those far, distant times.
Today, we are can all be Giants.
‘SellOut’ Reid is going to find that out the hard way it looks like.
I’m ready to walk his state telling his constituents just how bad he’s been.
Yet, 60 ‘noncontroversial’ Repugs will be allowed, ooh, 8 Dems too… WTF???
tex, you are so late, ndfg gave us a list of cookies to choose from. the zed is long gone (waving) how ya doing and why are you not sleeping?
started having back probs at work today and it hasn’t gotten much better. slept for a while between jobs and then after hebrew school, but now my back hurts again
:( tex the only positive i can come up with is to try to imagine how bad it would be hurting without that new bed
no offense to ndfg, but a LIST of snacks is not the same as a photo.
mmmm calling dibs on all the cashews in the mixed nuts
i figure thursday nite and friday nites are gonna be big news dumps this week. right before a holiday when everyone is headed over the hills and through the woods to grandma’s house
you have christmas plans suzanne?
Cool, I’m calling dibs on the pecans…
Whew, I thought maybe I was the only one who recognized him in that video.
hi Margot. hi CT.
thanks again, gang!
margot, i recognized him too – after several double takes
tex, going to the bride to be’s xmas eve day but will be here every night throughout the holiday
we know quality writing when we see it, et, and that was quality.
cool suzanne!
hi ET. how’s Alaska?
Since you asked. *g* Oooh wait, I’m going to have to think about this…
6-26-87
7-18-90
6-17-91
7-17-89
6-14-91
3-21-91 Can you tell I liked 91? I liked Hornsby with the Band.
Then there were those singular moments in shows that were only average, like the Unbroken Chain breakout, or the Casey Jones reappearance at RFK, or my first Attics of My Life. Sigh…
How about you?
Suze – ygm
Actually, Ma’am, I shall bid ya a fond adieu, and to the Lake! Aloha Oe!!!
Betsy, I hoped you were absent here because your new bed was so so comfortable. I guess that’s asking a lot from a bed, to take all your pain away.
This might actually be worthwhile. I was afraid to say “hi” here 29 months ago. I get intimidated by the raw intelligence I read every day at places like fdl and DKos. Any lurkers out there afraid of writing down what they believe? Give it a try….
Suzanne,
minus 12F tonight, but promising to warm up a bit each day through the next week.
g’nite CT
thanks margot.
fork, minus 12 (shruddering) i’m happy we are in the 40’s tonight instead of the 30’s
Old fan here.. Nearly 90 shows. Used to usher at the Warfield. JGB in the Warfield felt like an extension of my own living room for many years.
ET, congratulations! A very impressive diary.
obstructionist repubs
from Huff Po by Bill Scher
Today is a day that will live in legislative infamy. Conservatives in the U.S. Senate set a modern day record for obstruction, forcing the 62nd cloture vote to move beyond a filibuster — breaking the record for a two-year congressional session with a full year to spare.
Nice Eureka. I saw JGB at the Warfield once, definitely the most intimate setting I ever saw Jerry.
For those of you not familiar with JJ Grey & Mofro: War Linked this one cuz it’s political but check out some of his other songs – love his soulful voice!
TexBetsy, isn’t it amazing? A record for filibusters and it’s barely registered a mention in the MSM, yet when the Dems dared even threaten to filibuster a judge and it was all over the news.
double standard would come as news to most americans.
ratbastahd, have you seen my blog and news feed?
Colbert and Dr. Howard Dean repeat in case anyone missed it.
rat, i love jj grey and mofo.. their war is a great cut and gets a lot of air time on KPIG – my local station. that’s off his new cd iirc
npb, how are you doing? i think we are rarely on at the same time.
Suz – incoming.
back at you npb
Excellent, thanks! First I heard of them.
Just home from my son’s graduation from nursing school in the frozen tundra of central WI and getting it together for big family Christmas dinner/reunion. With luck I’ll be thawed out by then. Been lurking on your blog – mucho kudos! I fret about your pain and wondered if you could try using one of those new heating pads with great control of the perfect appropriate temp.
don’t forget to stop by and give digby some love during her fundraiser
Heat only helps a bit. What helps most is water and I will definitely get to the pool tomorrow. Had a nice warm bath an hour ago. Was pain free until th moment I stepped out of the tub. Ergh. Now waiting for the darvocet to kick in.
Oh, and congrats on your son’s graduation!
warm water is great but i’ve spent so many nights soaking in the tub for pain that i hate tubs now.
One of my students and her mom made little fizzy things for the bath and gave them as gifts. They gave me 5 in a little snowman tin. Smelled kinda odd, but it was a nice change in the tub.
how nice tex. those homemade gifts are the best ones.
Tex, there’s a way to make your own bath salts.
Basically, it’s epsom salts, kosher salt, and a couple of scented oils of your choosing, shaken in a jar. Lasts a very long time!
These were made into little cakes and have Chanukah symbols stamped on the tops before they dried.
oh really, margot. essential oils?
what’s the Secret to Hot Monkey Love? Shout, Study Reveals

Suz, no. That would be too strong and way too expensive. Just bath oils like you buy at Bath and Body.
Or if you have your own bath oil you can add some drops of essential oil, make it just how you want it.
School Admits to Mistakenly Shocking Students
ABC News – 16 hours ago
A teacher and a student interact at the Judge Rotenberg Educational Center in Canton, Mass. The center had admitted to mistakenly administering electric shock treatment to at least two students after a prank caller allegedly under the guise of a school …
cool, thanks margot. can you email me the measurements – would love to give it a try.
tex, sometimes a gal’s just gotta do what a gal’s gotta do
I love this video – treetop flier
I saw CSN&Y on their tour last year, and Stills played this. It was awesome live. Great song!
Huff Post has an ad video preview of Charlie Wilsons War and made me wonder how FDL can capture this advertising revenue stream. Release in major markets on Friday. Anyone know how the feature film advertising market works?
Will Rogers
from Quotes of the Day
“On account of being a democracy and run by the people, we are the only nation in the world that has to keep a government four years, no matter what it does.”
thanks tow. i’ve not been to a concert in 2 years or so and am jonesing (laughing)- thank goodness for utube with live clips. i saw one of him doing treetop live but i like the flying on this one.
npb, i don’t know. that may be a good question to ask during the daytime
The flying video is cool. Sometimes the stuff people add to songs on youtube is really lame, but this one was quite good.
Suzanne – I did not see this until this morning; sorry I am late to the party. For what its worth is the perfect song. Back in September, I did a post using a different video version of For What Its Worth. The video presentation to this version is one of the most powerful I have seen and really hammers home the truth of the song to where we stand today. Take a look, I guarantee that you will like it. Here is the YouTube link. Cheers.
I’m so sorry I missed the We Fight Back protest song fest and voting and everything.
I wholeheartedly agree with your selection.
If I may, I would like to nominate my favorite “protest” song – Christmas category. That would be “Father Christmas” by the Kinks. Not only does it rock, the lyrics are biting enough to singe anyone smug in their little bubble of the “magic of Christmas”.
I especially love the bridge
This is contrasted with the third verse
And all set off by the anarchistic chorus
I hear this and I want to scream, cry, and go get my own machine gun to visit Bill O’Reily… It also makes me want to go to my church, tear down all the boughs of holly, and weep in prayer for the gift that should be celebrated.
I know many fellow firepups are atheist, agnostic, or just fed up with religion. I won’t wear my faith on my sleeve here, but this “protest song” stirs my faith more than any other Christmas carol or ‘holiday’ song of the season. I am continually astounded that it is Ray Davies who can elucidate Christ’s message so much more effectively than any maudlin Christmas song.
Call me Scrooge and a curmudgeon, but I really don’t like what Christmas is made out to be. I confess, it was me who spray-painted the graffiti in the South Hall laundry room at NM Tech way back in the early 80’s “Season’s Beatings… Merry F**king Christmas”
On that note, I’ll shut up for now. Keep the faith. Don’t let complacency keep protest out of your heart.
P.S. my vote for best protest song of the 80’s is “Beds are Burning” by Midnight Oil…
When students walked into my university Freshman Seminar “Student Activism from the ’60s to the Present” in August of this year, this video of “For What it’s Worth” was playing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30W3iRL48gQ
Also used the song when I was teaching high school English in 1967-69, so I certainly agree with its selection.
Hey everyone, what’s with all the confetti and fallen balloons and smeared face paint? :P
Great choice! I love CSN and Buffalo springfield and that whole era of music. I’m a hippie born a bit too late (was 9 when that song came out)…you boomers are so cool.
I despise our country’s actions right now, but sure love you guys. Thank you firedoggies for all your activism!!!
(((firedogs)))
