An extraordinarily brave Jamie Leigh Jones testified before the House Judiciary Committee today. Not-so-brave was the Justice Department -- they were supposed to send a representative, but none showed up.
Jamie Leigh:
"He handed me the drink and said 'don't worry, I saved all my Roofies for Dubai," or words very similar to that. I thought he was joking and felt safe with my co-workers. I believed that we were all on the same team. I took two sips from the drink and don't remember anything after that."
It really is consistent with a larger narrative -- we're not all on the same team. "We" are supposedly fighting terrorists, or weapons of mass destruction, or the evil-doers, or whatever they're packaging it as today, but in the end the corporate cons are just out for the corporate cons and everybody else is just supposed to pay the freight. There really is no "we."
Once I returned home, I sought medical attention, both psychiatric and physical. I was originally sent to a psychiatrist of KBR's choosing. The first question asked was, "are you going to sue Halliburton." My mother and I walked out.
Jamie Leigh says she has been contacted by 11 other women who have also been assaulted by contractors in Iraq. When she talked to the US Attorney in Florida, and wanted to know who they should contact, the Attorney said "don't refer them to my office."
John Conyers was quite righteously indignant about the failure of the Justice Department to show:
I’m embarrassed that the Department of Justice can’t even come forward. I want (Mukasey) to start talking about these questions that we’re asking the witness…We’ve got tens of thousands of people over there, goodness knows how many people have preceded Ms. Jones in this tragedy…This is an absolute disgrace. The least we could do was have people from the Department of Justice and Defense over here talking about how we’re going to straighten out the system right away. You don’t even need a hearing to do that. They should have responded to their Congressman Poe immediately, and said let’s clean this up right away. Did they do that? No.
The bipartisan outrage of the committee members seemed real, but there's one way to find out. If the committee is willing to go to the mat to compel testimony from the Justice Department, that's one thing. If the Republicans start acting like a bunch of toadies for KBR, that's another.
In the mean time, the courage and class shown by Jamie Leigh Jones is inspirational. What a fighter.

I am guessing that toadies will be the response, rather than trying to bring justice to bear for these women. The GOP knows which side the bread is buttered on.
Unbelievable–it just gets worse and wore
“
So, when WILL the justice department stand up for, you know, justice?
I’m surprised noone from DOJ showed up to ask her what she was wearing. This is so symptomatic of everything that’s wrong with our country. No protection, no old fashioned mores, just take what you want when you want it with no accountability. Really sucks. And she is a brave woman. When I was raped by a police officer many years ago, I moved, it never even occured to me to go to the police.
My God! What other horrors are they desperately trying to cover up? Kudos to the courageous Jamie Leigh and thanks for this post dear Jane.
“So, when WILL the justice department stand up for, you know, justice?”
Justice? That got waterboarded out long ago.
Now we’ll be treated to another round of disbelieving vileness from the Malkins of the world as they attempt to flay yet another fellow citizen who dared speak out about crime and monstrosity in Iraq.
Yeah that probably would be the response.
“So, when WILL the justice department stand up for, you know, justice?”
February, 2009?
Bob in HI
Why aren’t the armed services committees of the House AND Senate looking into this??????????????????
Unf*cking believeable. This is beyond reason……..
Thank you Jane, for following up on this tragedy.
Digg this with me, firedogs, digg!
Isn’t Carl Levin head of the Senate committee?
The truly sad part of this is that KBR/CheneyBurton had probably gotten David Addington to write the some sort of grant of Testimonial Immunity and are keeping it safe for the time (after Jan 2009) when they will be forced to answer questions. Addington has the same authority to immunize them as the State Department had to immunize the BlackWater contractors, which is to say no authority, but that doesn’t mean it ain’t happening.
Been watching this band of cutthroats and thieves for far too long to believe that they are not keeping something for that proverbial “rainy day” in January 2009 when the weather will change, hopefully for the better.
DOJ and DOD won’t show up and if they are subpeonaed it will be claimed as “Executive Privilege” or State Secrets or some hogwash from the Bush grab bag of avoidance.
The DOJ being a no-show is absolutely appalling.
What’s the over/under on when the swiftboating of Ms. Leigh begins?
I bet they’ll pull an all-niter and have something despicable ready by morning.
This is not unf@#kingbelievable. Its totallyf@#kingbelievable and also very very sad. War claims another innocent victim.
I have read that her rape kit used by the Army disappeared.
Just like the tapes. Maybe the Decider has a sidekick called the Destroyer.
More seriously, someone tell me please that there is a basis for her case to survive until after 2008. After all, a Democratic committee that could conceive of legislating retroactive immunity can conceive of retroactive cupability.
Or am I dreaming here?
Bush should be charged with the rape.
But of course KBR in Iraq opeates in a legal Black Hole of Calcutta.
And there are enough Federalist Society members in the federal judiciary
to maintain this fiction and kill any civil suit.
As I have many times before, I’d like to extend my warm thanks
to Ralph Nader, without whom all this would not have happened.
Hello Waxman, this is a little more important that baseball and steroids.
Agreed. I am (word of the day) fired up. Jane, where do we go from here?
I’d settle for war crimes, instead…
There’s also an important case of a woman who finally went AWOL in order to avoid returning to duty under a commander who had sexually abused and harassed her. (Susan…___________?, from Washington or Oregon, I think.)
Perhaps we need some congressional hearings on this.
Bob in HI
In a different context, a commenter on another blog used the colorful and horrible term ‘throat punch’ to describe what he was tempted to do in reaction to some atrocity. If Ms. Jones were my daughter, I know I would likely commit a crime of passion. Fuckers. Excuse my French, but this has made me hopping mad. Is there any decent contractor in Iraq?
Wishful thinking. The Bushites have removed so many career civil servants in Justice (and every other executive agency) and replaced them with incompetent (is there a word for inverse competence, not just lack of competence, but its opposite?) political hacks, that it is going to take a long time to right the ship.
i can’t get past the psychiatrist asking her if she was going to sue halliburton. the level of moral decay is stunning.
I am certainly glad there is finally some shock demonstrated by the republicans but where was the alarm when they saw that video of blackwater shooting families on their weekend drive?
to the tune of elvis presley
where the HELL were they then?
so this is a white American that got raped by these bastard and NOW they’re “appalled”?
where is the indignation that we even HAVE blackwater?…AND WHERE IS THEIR INDIGNATION THAT THIS PRESIDENT HAS GIVEN BLACKWATER UDNCONDITIONAL AMNESTY FOR ANYTHING THEY DO IN IRAQ?
The US recently announced new ethics requirements in federal contracts. But they don’t apply to ones which are to be performed overseas. (Big surprise, huh?)
Here’s a link to the RealPlayer video of the hearing, from the House Judiciary Committee website.
Sick, sick, sick. A guarantee: not ONE person will ever be prosecuted for this. No one ever is.
There is no more rule of law, only the rule of money and corporations.
My fear about this entire administration is that no one will ever be prosecuted. Seven years and the only ones in jail are Abramoff and Cunningham?
My heart goes out to this woman. She will never get justice for the crimes committed against her — and she’s an employee of the most cosseted contractor ever. Imagine if she were an Iraqi woman?
you know, the democrats can tie this in with the president’s request for immunity of his pals that helped him peep in on us
we can do things like;
“they want immunity for rape, they want immunity for murder, they commute the sentence of traitors who put this nation in harms way and they grant unlimited immunity for ALL crimes committed by black water
WHAT THE HELL DO REPUBLICANS STAND FOR?
RAPE?
MURDER?
TORTURE?
TREASON?
what has become of the once proud grand old party?”
slam DUNK
Words fail.
This woman has incredible courage. I admire her going public and pursuing justice for the violence done to her.
I wonder if that would qualify as medical malpractice, or a violation of whatever code of ethics psychiatrists have. Maybe a complaint should be made to the state agency that regulates the medical profession wherever this took place.
Seriously. Drags the horror of this thing down to a whole new level.
Good call. Tie that in with the APA’s defense of the torture shrinks and it smells even worse.
BlueStateHead: If I remember correctly her rape kit was handed over to Halliburton by the State Department.
Which reminds me, whenever anyone mentions the number of troops in Iraq, the greater number of private contractors is never included, shouldn’t we be vigilant in including them? I’ve read that congress doesn’t even know how many are there. I believe they’re there because apparently the private sector can do everything better and cheaper than the government. We know that’s a lie, but we hear very little about it. They cost more, they’re unaccountable, they create enemies not only “over there”, but also over here. More light on these bastards please. I know FDL has done many stories so far, but more are needed.
Any bets on which Democratic candidate will mention this? Maybe Kucinich, maybe Dodd. No hope on the rest, though.
Hillary is in a position to go after it, but she doesn’t want to appear strident. It’s much easier to wear quilted jackets on the Today show and try to show her kinder side than defend a victim of (literally) corporate rape.
These pseudo macho men in KBR take their criminal cues from the top. From “men” like our chicken president and his henchman Cheney. Wild west bravado, and that phony bullshit. The wanted dead or alive types who want us to think they are actual cowboys, like the hobby horse riding baby in charge of the Oval Office. Lucky none of these victims of these felonies were my daughter, or my lady. For if it were, it might push me over the edge.
The betrayal revealed by this story is just beyond my comprehension. No rule of law, just power. This is not my America.
Heartfelt well wishes to Ms. Jones and other brave ones who stand up in the face of such monstrous abuse of power.
Jamie Leigh Jones’ testimony starts at about 38:45 into the video.
Can you begin to imagine what has been done to Iragi boys and girls by people who represent the U.S.?
Do you think our new AG will get right on this?
Huckleberry’s Iowa campaign manager on MSNBC says Huck’s religious background qualifies him to conduct the war on terror against the Islamists, which he calls a religious war. This in response to Tucker’s question about who advises Huckleberry on foreign policy issues.
Speechless and outraged.
We need to remember that most of the contractors in Iraq are unnecessary. The Iraqs’ economy would be much stronger if they were reconstructing their own country. As we talk about the crimes of the contractors we need to insert the fact that the craphead Bush adminstration is pillaging both Iraq and the United States via the contractors. It is the same thing they did in New Orleans. No telling how many were raped there by Blackwater. This is an unholy war against all but a few fascist neocons.
Yup, Kiddo, the cues all came from the top. Abu Ghraib, torture, law-breaking, every single bit came out of Bush’s very twisted psyche. He has set the tone and then found toadies to implement it.
destroyed
Those torture tapes were probably ruined when he jizzed all over them.
What? He didn’t call it a Crusade to boot? That’s about all that’s missing for the religious tri-fecta there…
The use of power and control trickles down. And as Bush is currently acting as “father” of our “country/family” I think it is interesting that he was once accused of sexual assault and that his alleged victim later committed suicide. He who heads the family sets the moral tone for the “family”.
I will never respect Dr. Phil as a therapist ever since the special he did comparing Bush as a parent, to John Kerry as a parent. He gave Bush high ratings as a dad, and said Kerry was “cold” and “distant”. I remember reading once that over involvement is worse than under involvement. I knew then that Dr. Phil had issues of his own because my radar has been going off since day one on Mr. Bush.
At any rate…parallel process. I still maintain that there is a sexual addiction component to the GOP which is why they reacted so vehemently to Bill Clinton. I think the river runs through it.
As a survivor myself, and someone who has spent my life studying the issue and helping survivors, we need to stand together and validate these women with our support. Wherever we can, we need to hook these women up with others who understand. Not being believed is by far the worse part of an assault like this. The memory of the violence and the physical pain (if memory exists) slips away…like labor pains. But the shame is what does the damage…and it’s is shame that is projected onto the survivor by the perps.
Watch for these power and control moves…minimize, deny and blame. It’s what all perps do and it is the foundation for our power to stand WITH her. The truth shall set us free.
These men are animals. Their actions are the result of the Bush attitude which permeates this administration. ‘If you want it, take it.
Holy schmokes…..That is scary.

P.S. Tom Tancreepo is dropping out tomorrow.
We may be, but in watching the video of Jamie, it’s clear that she isn’t. Paraphrasing, she said “nothing seems to happen in my case unless the media is around.”
This nation has plunged into a pit so deep and dark it is tough seeing us climbing back out.
-G
So true. The addiction involves sex, power and greed. And they pull more addicts in daily. “First one’s free.”
anti-competent might work.
Only one presidential candidate will fully enforce the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and our Rules of Law.
Jamie would get her day in court under a Ron Paul administration.
Scott Horton, who testified alongside of Ms.Leigh, posted this at Balkinization:
http://balkin.blogspot.com/
Incompetent Saboteurs? Combines the lack of competence with the planned undercutting of the mission of the various gov’t departments.
It also suggests that the “war on terror” [islamists] is the only foreign policy issue that Huckleberry recognizes as important.
The Huckster’s campaign manager says that the Huckster is well qualified to fight the war on terror cause it’s a theological conflict and the Huckster has a degree in theology.
Holy SHIT!!! He’s gonna argue theology with the terrorists? The Huckster’s fuckin NUTS!
This may be slightly off-topic, but I have to get this out…I’ve never commented here at FDL, but I’ve been a reader for a while. I am so disgusted by this entire tragedy that I can’t even see straight. This woman claims she was raped…and personally, I believe her based on the evidence I’ve seen. What makes no sense to me what-so-ever is the amount of trash-talking and outright moronic rhetoric launched at this poor woman by right wing psychotics across the web. It is absolutely disgusting to me, not to mention completely embarrassing for the entire human race, that a certain portion of this country’s citizens reacts to allegations like these with anger and rage directed at….who? The Victim. Well, I guess that’s “Post-9/11 America!”, for you. I guess this is yet another little slice of evidence that those that cheerlead what this administration has wrought and claim that they want to bring democracy and justice to the middle east, (an area where rape victims are almost never believed), are just straight up liars.
I can understand that there are people that want to see more evidence or need more info to “believe” this woman’s story….what I cannot understand is why the right wing reaction is to automatically jump to the defense of a giant, faceless corporation like this one. What do they get out of it? I’m not talking about the politicians and the officials and all the talking heads that might be on the payroll in one way or another…I’m talking about the average Joe. The average American that, for some reason, actually chooses to jump to the defense of Halliburton/KBR…why? You’re not an employee. You don’t work there. The allegations are not being directed at you, personally…so why all the screeching? Why all the seething anger directed at the victim while running to bow down and worship at The Sacred Altar of Halliburton/KBR?
What do they get out of it?
Does anyone else feel like the entire world has gone fucking nuts? Who on earth would blame this poor woman for no reason other than to try and clear a corporation’s “good name”?
The outright boot to the face comes today in the form of…the DOJ not even showing up?! Are you fucking kidding me?
I want answers. I want someone from the DOJ to be put front and center and have to explain.
Because until Americans start getting REAL, TRUTHFUL answers from our elected officials, and in this case the DOJ itself, there is no reason for this country’s citizens to hold them in any regard higher than that which is reserved for a cockroach.
I have absolutely ZERO respect for the DOJ now, I have absolutely ZERO respect for the administration and I have absolutely ZERO respect a washed-up, pathetic mainstream press that enables this kind of infantile avoidance of responsibility.
Sorry for ranting…I just can’t handle being so sickened on such a consistent basis.
Whats the problem? Halliburton is not an American Company, they are headquartered in Dubai. I guess if they are middle eastern, then they are the enemy.
Actually I am just so sick of everything these days. This is horrible. When are the Christian Right and other value voters going to say “Enough!”
This shit is ugly.
I strongly disagree. I think if you want to talk about what candidate “will fully enforce the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and our Rules of Law,” Chris Dodd’s name is at the top of the list.
Tancredo said to be ready to quit race. So who will he give his supporters to? They’re both eager for advice.
Dodd and Paul share one thing in common- neither is going to be president.
I have heard that he has a BA in religion but that he dropped out of theology school without getting a degree…has anyone else heard this?
“We need to remember that most of the contractors in Iraq are unnecessary. The Iraqs’ economy would be much stronger if they were reconstructing their own country.”
Plan A in Iraq was supposed to be the dismemberment of the Government planned economy of Iraq and the firing of every member of the Ba’ath party from government jobs. This was supposed to let 1000 flowers bloom, and in the naive minds of Cheney, Rumsfeld, Doug Feith, Paul Wolfowitz et al., millions of Iraqis would instantly become business entrepreneurs ready to bid on contracts for all the services the new satrapy of Baghdad would need. But a funny thing happened on the way to the forum, and it turned out there was no security in the Plan, and Iraqis seem disinclined to model themselves after Fuller shoe brush salesmen, or vacuum cleaner salesmen, or MacDonald’s franchises. What to do? Voila! KBR contractors were ready and willing.
The whole thing was FUBAR from the moment the Advance Force left Kuwait.

“Regent University School of Law Graduate”??
Let’s start a campaign to get Jamie Leigh Jones named Time Magazine’s person of the year. Previous whistleblowers have won. If they need to have more than one, add Valerie Plame Wilson and David Iglasius.
Thom Hartman today was telling about first hand accounts of Torture in various countries. The goal of torture is to Terrorize the good people.
Gang rape and imprisonment is a form of torture. So the message was to those who survived this form of torture was to STFU and you might get home alive. This torture would terrorized all other female workers for contractors in Iraq.
What more are they doing in our name?
Aloha, Stew! Thanks for delurking, it feels good to get it off your chest, eh? 8-)
I watched interview with Dan Abraham’s last evening Jamie’s courage is amazing! Many women would just hide their shame and shut up(I am sure thats what those animals thought) But no she has come forward for all of us to see and hear what is happening in OUR name in Iraq. This national shame is what we got when GWB was anointed, more and more bullshit slime keeps coming out.
That Jamie went through is a crime the whole right wing shares in. This is a wake up call to all women to never trust their well being to any right wing connected company.
I am particully upset as this hits home for me. My oldest sister went through something similar to this when she was young AND YES DRUGS WERE USED TO HELP perpetrate the crime. She was never the same again! And there was never an investigation!
RAPE is the most evil of crimes there are, the victim goes life with those terrible memories, haunted by those memories(like post traumatic stress syndrome)
There has to more that can be done for her and any one like to get justice and put those animals in jail where they they belong(Maybe they might even get some jail house justice!! It would satisfying to see that happen.
Stew,
Thank you for your rant and welcome to the Lake. I’m sorry it took such a heinous story for you to start commenting but please stay and contribute more.
Huckabee was born in Hope, Arkansas, to Mae Elder and Dorsey W. Huckabee. His father worked as a fireman and mechanic and his mother worked as a clerk in a gas company.[4] He has one sister who is a middle school teacher.[5] Huckabee’s first job, at 14, was working at a radio station where he would read the news and weather.[6] He was elected Governor of Arkansas Boys State in 1972 and is a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Alumnus. He was president of Hope High School in 1973.[7] He married his wife Janet McCain on May 25, 1974.[5] He graduated magna cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University, completing his bachelors degree in Religion in 2½ years before attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas where he dropped out after one year.[8][9] [10] He has two honorary doctoral degrees: a Doctor of Humane Letters, received from John Brown University in 1991, and a Doctor of Laws from Ouachita Baptist University in 1992.[11] [12]

Too late… Putin is Time’s Man of the Year…
Welcome to the commenting side of the Lake, Stew. Lots of folks jumped in to offer their first comment here with words like “I have to get this out” and “I am so disgusted” and “I want answers.” You’ve come to the right place.
One little correction, though: your comment is NOT off topic at all.
Glad to have you join the conversation - don’t be a stranger, and try it again sometime!
We can expect that this brave woman will get smeared so badly she’ll have to change her identity. There’s serious money at stake, like Dick Cheney’s payout.
After 60 years, the Japanese still won’t own up to their “comfort women.” We certainly will NEVER punish these rapists.
Stew glad some one else feels that way! I have sisters, daughters and grand daughters. That any of them could be abuse that way would push me over the edge. I would be hunting the thugs down. I do get even when it is called for.
Clarification. I speak of its…leaders?
Nor, the ‘Rape of Nanking’… 8-(
Yes. From NBC on Friday:
There’s a world of difference, in my professional opinion, between an undergrad major in religion and a degree in theology.
Its was planned to fail. I don’t believe that the Bush admin. wanted anything but what did happen. For example, Bremer decreed that the Iraq farmers could not save their own seeds. Why? So that Big Ag could come in and see their GMO crap.
I knew Mukasey was a cowardly sack of collaborationist shit.
-G
We have a winner!
KBR Board of Directors.
I’ve never heard of any of these people.
But, at the time of the attack, KBR was still part of Halliburton:
Halliburton Board of Directors. There are certainly some prominent names there, like the former President of Rice, and the former CEO of American Airlines.
An all-around class act.
At least we can take comfort knowing the first twins are safe, insulated, with round the clock protection and living in the lap of luxury for the rest of their lives. Of course I realize there is a qualitative distinction between the twins and the victims of these crimes. If this had happened to the president’s daughters something would be done.
Doesn’t he get a little credit for a year and a half of Master’s level courses? ;-)
Whatever education Mr. Huckabee has had, it doesn’t appear to have helped his world view.
Is there a committee chair we should be contacting to make them take some action in congress or do we yell at Nancy - which I always like to do. I want them to take some action to help this young woman. I am outraged at the thugs who are doing this type of thing and I wonder how many more have happened.
I tried so hard to tell Schumer–one of Mukasey’s Dem champions–this, and the only response I got was, “He is better than any possible confirmable alternative, and better than allowing Bush unfettered interim appointee(s)”.
Fucking Schumer.
That and a couple of bucks will get him a latte.
But of course, it really hits home then! (not that I could ever endorse rape of any one male or female. It is some thing that is just alien to me!
Tim Russert was just on NBC News pointing to the recent poll that showed that Barack Obama did better against Republicans than did Hillary Clinton. I caught the end of the piece but nowhere did I hear Russert state that Edwards did even better against Republicans than either Obama or Clinton.
Fucking Schumer fucked us all.
ABC news covering this now, includes interview with her, plus clips from the hearing. Other cases noted. Mentions that DoJ ignored complaints, and now declining to speak to reporters. Brian Ross reporting.
Education obviously doesn’t necessarily transfer into wisdom. I see that everyday in the administration and a few teachers, in the rural public school in which I toil. Huckabee and Bush are prime examples of this fact.
I get furious when I hear wingers and war apologists bringing up the plight of the Iraqi people under Saddam.
They didn’t give a shit then and they don’t give a shit now.
-G
Fuck, fuck, fuckity, fuck.
OK. Now I feel a little better!
House and Senate Judiciary Committees — stress the legal black hole for contractors that is Iraq.
House and Senate Foreign Relations Committees — stress the oversight of the State Department over contractors in general.
House and Senate Armed Services Committees — stress the fact that the military apparently played some role in this fiasco.
And that’s just for starters.
Along side this, and possibly more effective, would be to call your own representative’s attention to this. Phone them up (or drop by the district office over the holidays), and ask politely but firmly what the hell they intend to do about it. Then wish them a merry Christmas, and tell them you’ll call back in January to hear what steps your rep has taken.
I hope; I DEARLY hope, that this does NOT go away. Jamie deserves a medal for speaking out about this.
It is not JUST a woman’s issue, of course, but Pelosi and Feinstein have the horsepower to keep this front and center, and to demand an intensive investigation to the charges. Where the fuck ARE they???!!!
And, while I would love to see ALL of the democratic candidates up on their hind legs about this, and calling for a ton of sunshine on this shit, I’m waiting most of all, for Hillary Clinton to stand beside these women.
It’s a perfect thing for her to do; a great chance to do the right thing and to make some political hay for herself and the democrats in doing it, but so far, it’s like everything else about Iraq; she basically has jackshit to say about it.
teevee wants to make Edwards a nice also ran. That’s their story and they’re stickin to it. It’s a battle to the death between the black guy and the white chick.
Interesting that Huck thinks it’s an advantage that the world sees the US headed by a Christian claiming he’s in a religious war with Islam.
Higher education also qualifies.
Thanks for the welcomes!
and to nahant, I would feel the same as you.
