Tonight, we proudly announce the winner of the Current Protest Song Category. Please join me in a rousing round of applause for bonkers' winning submission of Pink, singing Dear Mr. President and her lyrics.
"Dear Mr. President"
(feat. Indigo Girls)
Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?
Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind.
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.
What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh
How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President,
You'd never take a walk with me.
Would you?

thanks, LL. there are still winners in the pipeline heading our way.
Our favorite mod has become a front-pager, all grown-up!
Ok, Ok. I was just looking to slip Phil Ochs in there somehow. Who did I vote for in this category? Was Neil Young in this category?
every time i listen to this song, i like it more.
She’s “The Leadership”.
Time for me to snuggle down in the world’s most comfortable bed.
See y’all tomorrow night.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer person. And I mean that. Not like when I said it about Rudy in a comment to the last post.
pain free sleep wishes tex
Betsy, so glad you’re enjoying that new bed. Sleep well :-)
nite, Betsy! yay for the bed!
“Dear Mr. President” get’s played a lot on the radio in Dresden (where there is no English language radio except BBC).
i wasn’t around for the nominations but i’m wondering if Ben Harper’s “I’ll Rise” got nominated?
thank you and thank you.
Near-Beer, Mr. President?
*blushing and scuffing dirt with my slipper toe* aw shucks, thanks
LOL
nite betsy
Buried on their website, and on page A02 of the deadtree WaPo:
snip
No mention of the netroots or grassroots, unless you count the “guerilla tactics” reference.
Grrrreat song! Does Bonkers win a President who can look him in the eye and not lie?
Oh yeah. I still don’t get this. Went to NYT website. Nothin’ about FISA. Went to MSNBC website. Ditto. What is their problem? This is HUGE.
But what’s Reid’s explanation for why he pulled the bill? He finally realized he’d been an asshole for 11 months and wanted to make amends. Look, eventually we may wind up all pissed off come January, but I’m gonna be happy now. Especially after SCHIP. That really had me perturbed.
What a great song!
Teddy, guerrilla has to be code for DFH’s
TSF answered my question about Reid.
and guerrilla tactics from its opponents,
Do I start grunting when I blog now?
Pink for Speaker of the House.
i’m enjoying picturing that with you in your pajamas and all.
Yes!! Yes!! DFH’s!!! Hve any of you actually known a young Republican? I have. It’s creepy. Gimme the DFH’s any day.
Teddy, my read is that this strengthens Dodd’s hand. He is likely to get more folks on-board instead of losing them, no?
Pink’s getting our party started
Suz, thanks for a great thread. Fading out here in EST-ville…g’night all!
g’nite LL and thanks for staying up.. remember, stay tuned
Teddy, how do you get a copy of the deadtree WaPoo the night before it comes out–and on the other side of the continent?
I would think. But the other side-not to mention the telecoms-are gonna shift into high gear. What we gonna hear from Bush? He’s dissappointed Congress recessed without giving him the FISA bill he wanted and the country is at risk because of it?
Jane was among the first to note Orrin Hatch bemoaning blogs on the senate floor this afternoon. I immediately thought, “First they ignore you, then..”
Sure enough, I think it was the first tell, Dodd and the guerrilla’s, and the rule of law, had won the day.
He’s going to say we’re aidin’ the terrrists.
Will do!
Arduous ballot reconstruction continues, lol
I like that.
The Pink and the Grey(Dodd).
Huzzah!
-G
margot, from my official report on the reconstruction:
No, just drag your knuckles on the ground… ;-)
Read this at Malkin’s shithole:
Update 9:30pm Eastern. This isn’t getting much attention outside of the lefty blogs, but tonight Harry Reid withdrew the FISA overhaul bill after Kos champion Chris Dodd threatened to filibuster it over telecom immunity provisions. The bill has bipartisan support. It is now tabled until next month.
Rah, rah, Lefty blogs!!!! Lefty blogs!!!!! Dats us, bitch.
What are we gonna evolve into? Like, respectable people?
BFL, malkin’s what a kia cop i knew called an overpriced SETT (spam eating trailer trash)
The website article tells you what page it’s on in tomorrow’s paper.
I have no superpowers.
But if the preznit has to follow the law the terrorists win!
Were the write-ins given similar attention?
Does everyone realize that the telecoms did not just give our info to the Bush administration? They sold them to the government. Note that the companies were not required to turn over the records to the NSA. If they had been required to cooperate by law, then Qwest would not have had the option not to cooperate.
The companies that did cooperate - AT&T, BellSouth and Verizon - are reported to be operating ‘under contract’ with the NSA. ‘Under contract’ means for a consideration. So, it is not unreasonable to infer that there is not a sufficient legal basis to require the phone records to be turned over to the NSA.
And, since the NSA, a government agency, has bought our records, whose money do you think they used to purchase these records? That’s right, Einstein. Yours and mine.
Our tax dollars at work.
That should make us all sleep a little better, shouldn’t it?
And, let’s not forget that we have paid the telecoms for the service which steals our information and sells it to the government, which purchases that information…with our money! We pay out on both sides!
It’s like paying for your rapist’s Vi*gr*.
“imaging while lit”
heh
Heh, not if the Intelligent Designers have their way… ;-)
Pink’s website in case any of you wanna give her some props for the song.
fumigating them in cyanoacrylate fume tanks
aka
smoking them in super glue fumes
I voted for American Idiot, and my personal favorite is Spearhead’s Bomb the World (Armageddon Version), but I really love this song. I wouldn’t have known Pink from Britney before I heard this song last year, it speaks volumes about this young woman!
As for FISA today, BIG victory but very temporary. They want us to lose interest and forget about it. Ain’t happening! If anything it’s renewed my energy to fight harder. Been writing LTEs again and called my Senators today. Let’s go!
I like that. SETT is a new one on me. I check out her sight every couple of days. Look, I’m not just saying this because of our ideolgical differences. Or because I’m a nice guy and she’s a witch who chases down young accident victims and their families becauee they’re “fair game” in bner book. I mean this objectively speaking: Her site sucks. In every way.
(laughing) ya’ll been watching CSI instead of COPS, eh
I really like Pink’s Mr. Preznit song, but when I think of protest songs I think of something that can be sung on a picket line. You know, kind of uptempo, with a beat? But Pink is great.
ES wrote about the steps he had to take for the write ins last nite.
“site” not “sight”. i’m really not a dumb ass, it’s just late here.
bfl, i use the number of typo’s in my comments as the gauge to just how tired i am.
neuro, we had over 160 submissions, ranging from rap to opera. it was really amazing the variety of protest songs there are.
Ok, you’re right. You remember everything. Still, the disparate treatment of ballots does raise questions that perhaps can only be answered by a recount.
bfl (crossing arms in front of bazooms) are you trying to yank on my chain (laughing)
Did any one get a canned reply from Feinstein today using the online sign up here on FDL? What the hell??
“Thank you for writing about Judge Michael Mukasey’s nomination as Attorney General.
After doing my due diligence and carefully reviewing Judge Mukasey’s record, I concluded that he will be a strong and independent leader of the Justice Department. I believe that if he was not confirmed, an acting Attorney General, who would not be confirmed by the Senate, would have led the Department for the remainder of the administration. The Justice Department is too important for that to happen.
Therefore, I supported Judge Mukasey’s nomination and voted to confirm him. I made a statement on the Senate floor explaining my decision which I have enclosed, along with an op-ed I wrote and op-eds from several newspapers on the importance of confirming Judge Mukasey.
Please know that I appreciate your opinion and hope that you will continue to inform me of your views. If you should have any other comments you want to share with me, or if you have a question I can answer, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. staff at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.”
Now that I’m thinking about it, I better get a court order now requiring that the ballots be preserved.
But seriously, I asked this before at the end of a thread. Did anyone else think Orrin Hatch looked like shit? Is he sick? His suit jacket was way too big on him.
A timely response, eh? ;-)
nahant!
I received SEVEN of those identical emails today — I can only imagine an intern very tired from answering phones during the entire day, who pressed the “Send” button every time Dianne breezed by and asked “Many calls today, dear?”
Jeez Suzanne,
That just gave me a brilliant business idea.
Why don’t we go into business providing Professional Chemical Reconstruction Consultants?
We could wear HazMat suits and put superglue in a box and wave the ballots around in the fumes and nod knowingly.
No actual work would be done, but hey, I’m just learning from the Republican pros on this stuff. The Custer Battles and Blackwaters business model, you know.
Are you saying his suit was empty?
-G
Now that I’m thinking about it, I better get a court order now requiring that the ballots be preserved.
perhaps i should just get in touch with my inner bitch - you know, the bitch with a badge one - and say all decisions final - no appeals
Well, yeah, it is. But that wasn’t what I was saying. I was just wondering if he had lost alot of weight. I can’t believe a Senator would have a tailor that bad. The shoulder seems were down on his arm. Maybe that’s the style in Utah. But his jacket just seemed way too big.
And on a day where we saw a triumph for the rule of law. Such irony.
“seams” not “seems”
G’nite.
Around here, Suzanne is the law, and she rules.
g’nite bfl, see ya tomorrow nite
Bemoaning the lack of the edit function, eh? Aloha BFL!
Around here, Suzanne is the law, and she rules.
i’m just the hostess/bouncer for jane’s living room. her place, her rules.
I respect Suzanne. She’s doing good things. But the one thing I would say to her is take off the uniform.
Phil Ochs rules.
I shall bid a fond adieu on this day of democratic leadership prevailing! Aloha Oe!!!
I hear Orrin is a big David Byrne fan. He stopped making sense long ago.
-G
Same thought. David Byrne.
Yeah. It was nice to have. But I didn’t always use it anyway. Well, it’s in the 40’s here in the City Beautiful. Brrrrrr. I gotta go snuggle up.
One coke for GregB!
‘Breezed by’ is exactly right, Teddy. When I was in Washington with Americans United For Separation of Church and State, we had an appointment to talk to her aide about some AU issues. Her aide was too busy to talk to us so we were relegated to her aide’s aide, who was about 12. They made us stand out in the hall to talk to the little aidette, who had absolutely no idea what we were talking about. Then who should come clip-clopping briskly down the hall but the little fireplug herself. She saw a cluster of her constituents from 3000 miles away in front of her office, and what does she do? Walks right through our group without so much as a glance.
That told me all I needed to know about her.
True. A long time. He’s funny when he gets mad.
Orrin looked a little cross-eyed and painless.
-G
your right! no that I rerun it it my head Hatch looked just this side of the grave! Maybe another seat up for grabs??
OK. I’m hittin’ the hay. Lemme know if Suzanne takes off her uniform. That little feller with the glasses in Pakistan did when the Preznint aksed him. I don’t see why she wouldn’t.
bfl, its usually an event that blinds most folk when i take off my uniform and have the bad luck to look my way… all that dayglo white skin - besides, i hardly know you
I dunno about up for grabs. Are there any democrats in Utah? i don’t think the 50 State Strategy got there yet.
“Constituents,” Alicia? Don’t you mean subjects?
Tonite’s eyewitless news pointed out the “trinity” of ornaments behind Huck’s head as well as the bookcase framed to look like a cross in his new ad. Gotta say, I missed these. Those eyewitless folks sometimes earn their keep. They didn’t point it out, but many evangelicals think Mormon’s concept of the Trinity is flawed — and that Mormons believe Jeebus didn’t die on the cross, but came to Missouri instead.
Not every negative ad looks negative on its face, I guess.
On that note, ‘pups, I take my weary but HAPPY self to bed. Huzzah for The Republic! We won one today, so enjoy it. Nowadays, wins are few and far between.
I keep telling you, there’s a typo quota here and we have to keep at it to make it! Strt speeling!
Well I’m just sayin’. If Musharaff would do it for the sake of democracy. That was a swell example for him to set.
Nite. Oh, and one thing. I love Bob Dylan. But even so, I trust he didn’t win. We’ll see.
g’nite teddy
Rocky Anderson is a swell anti-war, anti-Bush Mayor of Salt Lake City, anad a registered Democrat. Sure like to see him in the Senate, occupying Orrin Hatch’s wellworn chair.
Alicia,
I am going to have to join that group. I thought I had at one time, at least I got some emails from them.
Did anyone catch the interview with Jamie Leigh Jones KBR rape victim on the Dan Abrams show? More of the wingnuts covering for the old boys! absoutly horrible what was done to her. Some one has to pays. Gov has not done any investigation of this in 2 TWO years. here is an expample of the new justice perpertrated by the wingnuts and friends. What are we becomming as a nation?? Makes me sick to think of it.
That’s good news. I’d like to see that, too.
Digby points out this is a good day, for an entirely different reason:
Things are getting tough for Chimpy when Fox Business is panning them roundly.
Bears have now clawed back about half of the relief gains minted during the most recent rally, which coincided with vain hopes for a half-point interest rate cut. And though the Fed got the lion’s share of the blame for the ensuing selloff, this was also a referendum on the government’s “Hope Now” mortgage relief plan. The inescapable conclusion: There is not much hope for a rescue by a bureaucracy that earned its stripes in New Orleans and Baghdad.
Fox link, sorry…
