Democratic leaders had hoped to complete an overhaul of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act before recessing for the year, since the current law governing the Bush administration’s warrantless surveillance program is set to expire in early February. But in the face of more than a dozen amendments to the bill and guerrilla tactics from its opponents, Reid surprised his colleagues when he announced there would not be enough time to finish the job.

Dodd vowed he will continue to try to scuttle the bill, which passed with bipartisan support out of the Senate intelligence committee, but he acknowledged “significant divisions” among his fellow Democrats.

I used a wide range of reconstruction techniques on the severely damaged ballots that included, but is not limited to, imaging while lit with a variety of alternate light sources and filters, fumigating them in cyanoacrylate fume tanks, and other procedures that should only be undertaken by a highly trained and skilled professional wearing an OSHA approved Level C HazMat suit. After many hours, I was able to reconstruct the documents.

Does everyone realize that the telecoms did not just give our info to the Bush administration? They sold them to the government. Note that the companies were not required to turn over the records to the NSA. If they had been required to cooperate by law, then Qwest would not have had the option not to cooperate.

The companies that did cooperate – AT&T, BellSouth and Verizon – are reported to be operating ‘under contract’ with the NSA. ‘Under contract’ means for a consideration. So, it is not unreasonable to infer that there is not a sufficient legal basis to require the phone records to be turned over to the NSA.

And, since the NSA, a government agency, has bought our records, whose money do you think they used to purchase these records? That’s right, Einstein. Yours and mine.

Our tax dollars at work.

That should make us all sleep a little better, shouldn’t it?

And, let’s not forget that we have paid the telecoms for the service which steals our information and sells it to the government, which purchases that information…with our money! We pay out on both sides!

NPR had the military guy in charge in Baghdad (not St Petreaus)today backing off the everything is perfect in Baghdad and the surge is working line. He was talking up the need for troops there (potential flare-ups, can’t step down til others step up, etc) all in connection w/the coming mandated withdrawals of troops. Sounded like ground being laid for surge, version 2.

BBC just reported Condi in Kirkuk (sp?)trying to work out something with the kurds.
