Voters in Potrero CA ejected all 5 pro-Blackwater members of the planning board Tuesday. Local opposition to the proposed private military training camp produced a 59% turnout that booted out the incumbents by significant margins.
If you’re looking for job security, this board ain’t it. Another three of the nine members were dismissed earlier when it became known they had been improperly appointed, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The ninth member opposes the training camp.
But don’t be looking for used jackboots on ebay just yet, the big vote is still a year away, when the county Board of Supervisors makes their decision.
Blackwater VP Brian Bonflglio commented on this exercise in democracy with customary sensitivity for community relations:
“I don’t care one way or the other,”
And God forbid the voters should have a say in the matter:
“I feel bad that people that I believe were serving the community were removed based on political influences,” Bonfiglio said. [egr bold]
Juls has the background in this Kos diary:
It was the nation’s first ever electoral vote on Blackwater and it was a massive people-powered grassroots victory over the mercenaries. Every "stop Blackwater" candidate won by at least 63%…. [snip]
It is also a blistering statement by a very conservative town to reject the Bush world view. Our nation is not better served by having a privatized Army. There is nothing pro-troop about supporting Blackwater.
Refresh my memory here, Blackwater is fighting for the American way and democracy? Seems they just can’t be bothered with actual pesky voters.

Beware of how you boot.
Blackwater may come back to boot you!
OMG! Just got with 49th people here in CA today and discussed Blackwater in San Diego. The land planning group has been recalled.
EG! Let’s toss those blackboots outta our closets and out of our neighborhoods. Yeah Protrero!!!
It would help if I read the post first, huh?!!
Buck Flackwater.
I know how they feel about voters- voters may have given us Clusterfuck.
Good for the voters!
lol, yeah! n fush buck!
Excellent post and news!
Wonderful example of democracy, the next hurdle(county commissioners) will be formidable though.
LooHoo, you are such a dynamo. i know you had to be actively involved in this recall and just wanted to say thank you.
Good evening pups!
evening egregious. great post
Man, those are some bada$$ neofacsist boots….not made for walkin’ but…nevermind…I like them…..;>
Blackwater…get the f outta my world…you are not a part of my dream…you are nothing but an aberration in my night terror…Oh, yeah, and you are a bunch of ignorant a$$holes…to “boot”!!!
Who the heck do these morons think the are??? They aren’t. BTW.
Hi eg and all the pups. Nice to read about some pushback!
From the San Diego Union:
Planning groups are advisory bodies that make recommendations to county officials on land-use issues. The county Board of Supervisors will make the ultimate decision on Blackwater’s proposal.
All of the county will have a say in this, and being heavily military, I’ll bet the good guys win.
EG, is that a picture of a pair you own or just a pair you covet?
krigman need to fix his feed, lol.
What is the “arrival of the CBO’s “?”
They resemble a pair of boots I have.
lol, FDLPress fixed it!
& # 8217 ; ’
Oh yeah Blackfingwater….??? Go back to the swamp you came from!!! Go away, you are all traitors to the United States of America!! Hear that, Cofer f’ing Black? You are an idiot. An old stinkin’ one too!! BTW, you are Ridiculous!!!! Idjiots!! Leave, go away. Go to Paraguay, I hear he water’s great down there…Asta La Vista Mofos!!! Women think you are revolting!! Men do too!! Bug off!!! Hit the road jacks.
Just leave, or stop….and go to your room!!!
I want those boots. ;>
Good Evening…how are all the pups tonight?
While I’m in the ‘hood, allow me to dispel the notion that it’s the left that’s waging a war on Christmas…
I apologize profusely for the OT: LooHoo, do you use Accelerated Math? If so, could you please email me at XXX at xxx. I need help understanding how it works from a teacher’s point of view. Thanks!
Oh, and mods, can you please make my email addy go away after LooHoo responds? Thank you!
Another ridiculous myth the idjiots want to bother themselves with….if we want Christmas, we’ll have Christmas, if we want Hanukkah, we’ll have Hanukkah…we will do whatever we want to do. They have zero rights to impose, suggest, imply or any other crappola they want to do….they need to mind their own f’ing business(es)….Idjiots. They can just bite us…..spit.
What kind of democracy is this?
Hi LS — it’s been several weeks now since I saw your comment about New Brighton, but just wanted to acknowledge that and to say that I was in that neighborhood in October :-)
Lea, sorry. Accelerated Math works too well to be approved by the State of Ca to be on the matrix. Can’t have anything that doesn’t infuse the standards into the curriculum in every chapter, whether it fits or not! Normally, it just serves to confuse.
Sorry I can’t be of more help.
thanks egregious – these folks are braver than we, or they, probably know. It takes real guts to go up against mercenaries-subject-to-no-law-but-their-own. Seriously. I’m very wary of doing any anti-Blackwater signage (just as I am about dissing the Saudi Royal Family…) Even if the law’s on your side it hardly matters when forces above/beyond-the-law are not.
like I said – it takes guts.
Assume he is referring to a report from the Congressional Budget Office. Or else some creatures from outer space. Oh no, the CBO’s have arrived!!
*waving to scarlet p*
OT, but
anybody seen the plethora of Patton Boggs ads on teevee in DC??? wtf? is this how Tim Russert pays his legal bills?
This is an excellent opportunity for law firms to advertise, seeing as how a lot of Repubs are gonna need lawyering up soon. Good times.
boots!
Thanks anyway, LooHoo, although are you sure you’re thinking of Accelerated Math and not Everyday Math? I’m pretty sure Accelerated Math is approved, as my nephew’s school is using it.
Thanks LL!! Google Earth brought it all back…Actually, it looked exactly the same to me…I could trace the streets/roads I walked as a young teen…all the way to my school…very eery…my favorite thing to do was to ride back and forth on the ferry to L’pool, because “the lad with the grey shirt (that worked on the ferry) was so fine…”….back and forth, back and forth… *g*
The text was all raw UTF until it went thought the comment filter.
Great memories! I’m completely in love with L’pool :-)
LooHoo, you ready for me to take down that email addy now?
What are raw UTFs, some kind of vegetables?
this is good news. the repubbbs hate to admit it, but the pendulum is swinging back our way.
Buh Bye!
I’m glad to have the connection…otherwise it feels somewhat like a dream…I appreciate it.
OT: For those of you (like me) who don’t get economics, Paul Krugman finally explains Big Shitpile in understandable terms.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12…..ref=slogin
Skippy in da house!
G’nite…!
Maybe it’s approved on the new matrix. We aren’t into previewing new math yet. If a district can afford to buy without using state funds, they can get what they like to supplement what the state allows. I don’t claim expertise, Lea.
Yes, Suz. You can take it down.
What’s the name of the place? Potrero? Where’s that? Near San Diego?
this is a good post, Eg. This is a story that probably won;’t get the play it should. And, as i am want to do, i’d like to make a larger point: The Democrats suck. They just don’t get it. It’s a different ballgame. people are not going to beat them about the heads for being “anti-defense” or “anti-military.” People want them to end this stupid war. So they should stop with the pussied approaach and do it.
LS, sure thing. I probably won’t get back over there again for a couple of years, but the memories remain :-)
Emergency OT re: FISA
Yoo, Big P!
Good night, LS, thanks again for the HOT links today at Marcy’s shop.
What???
Thank you LooHoo and Suzanne!
Me too! BTW, if you throw a good recipe for Yorkshire puddin’, I’d sure appreciate it….*g*
email addy has poofed
I read today that the San Diego Planning Commission or City Council or something can still approve the Bleakwater Compound.
Writing myself a note now — will be on the lookout!
what’s up?
I want Blackwater disbanded.
County Board of Supervisors make the ultimate decision. The group that was recalled today is advisory.
and its leaders charged with war profiteering.
Mmmmmm…I’ll be on the lookout! Catch me if you can, and/or I’ll catch you!
g’night all, back to work tomorrow.
lmao,yeah basically :)
Once upon a time, right-wing malitias were viewed as a bad thing. Now the U.S. government supports and finances them. What’s up?
Yes, and for being a militia that is against American interests.
I want Blackwater disembowled.(But in a good way.) :>
*waving g’nite to the leaving sleepy pups*
—
ding ding ding. thank you wigwam.
different (INSANE) administration.
They are in Bob Filner’s district. Those voters aren’t totally crazy.
So how did the folks in Potrero pull this off? From Juls’ Kos diary:
A multitude of take home lessons from their experience.
They are not militias “for” American interests….they are an organization that does dirty work for the Neofascists that rule their new nation, “The Homeland”. They have to go, now. They are a danger to America. They must be disbanded.
One turdblossom at a time…..
*watches as Penn goes and curls up with a box of chocolates*
What was the FISA alert about?
FISA might come up in Congress tomorrow. We’ll be watching.
If it doesn’t say Late Night, can I still bring snacks?
Tex, is says Late Nite – refresh your screen and then bring ‘em on.
Suzanne, the cookies are in 79.
I’m having trouble linking but go to democraticunderground.com . Reid is going to move the senate intelligence committee bill tomorrow. It contains retroactive immunity for the phone companies. I’m not sure if they had a meeting already or if it is taking place tomorrow between Reid, AG Mukasey and Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell.
Some more good news from Digg: Scarecrow’s post titled “CIA Won’t Take the Fall for Bush’s Torture Policies” is #6 in World News with 1027 diggs.
Great to see his excellent work recognized by a wider audience.
sorry, tex, i’m still not 100% from the bug i had last nite.
It’s fixed now, I think. And thanks for the tip.
So, did NSA take a picture of my boot??? If so, what the hell is that about????? I guess those spyer guys were just…I don’t know…obsessed with women’s boots.. What’s up with that??? Huh?? Huh??? NSA??? What’s up with that???
How come they weren’t making pretty pictures of OBL…??? Huh???? I thought that’s who y’all were lookin’ for during the past 7 years of the spendation (new word, I made it up, because W makes up everthing else, so why not ya’ know what I mean?) of our tax moulah… Huh? What’s up with that???? You don’t know do you?
Charade.
Hmm. Reid? Well, I guess we shall see. Ya never know.
thanks – there are still some bugs being worked out and there appears to be a once in a while glitch with mac users and links.
your link was fixed by the Mod Squad
Of course it contains retroactive immunity. Why wouldn’t they give companies that spied on Americans retroactive immunity? That would make too much sense….
LS,
As far as I can figure out, the only two things people here in Washington fear are successful primary challenges and the prospect of going to jail. Those get their attention.
You got that one right.
Good night!
Tomorrow is another day…..
I like the going to jail part.
sleep well LS
Good night, LS.
I especially like the go to jail part – that was always my favorite part of the old job – watching the eyes widen when the realization hits that those are cuffs on their wrists and it is not a consentual act they can safeword.
Thanks, although if it helps to know, I am not a Mac user.
we know how to cure that.
Has anyone seen PeanutButter lately?
is it safe?
I was always very careful, tw3k, to ensure that I was kept safe at all times.
IM’d with PB earlier today.
Best. Decision. Ever.
Fuck mercenaries and their lawless conduct.
It should be said that French and Hessian mercenaries secured the independence of this country.
That should have been the end of it.
Once a nation is established any presence of soldiers of fortune should be abolished.
Militarism in general sucks.
Militarism for hire leads to the unthinkable abuses of the law perpetrated by Blackwater operatives.
tex, hope all is well with PB and you let her know that next time you IM.
Yes, Betsy, let her know we’re missing her!
I’m beat. Good night, pups.
sleep well loo hoo.
enjoy your well deserved rest after that election, loohoo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krVACUbciJE ;)
Love johnny cash.. thanks tw3k
ja, good one.
Evening, all!
Excellent news on the recall of the board. There’s still quite a bit more to do to eject Blackwater itself from Potrero but it’s a start, it’s a start.
PB! we were just asking about you.
Quite the victory for you guys, peanutbutter. Congratulations!
three cheers for peanutbutter, loohoo, and all the folks in protrero who refuse to be trod on by blackwater!
What’s interesting is that both of our senators have refused to acknowledge this issue. Not sure why Boxer has been quiet — she can be funny sometimes, but not in the way DiFi can. With DiFi, I’m just dying to see if there’s “good” Blum connections we can use that would serve the purpose of embarrassing both DiFi and Blackwater… Well one can dream of sugarplums this time of year, right?
Hey, yeah, I’ve been scarce a bit — work stuff, that kind of thing. The server hits seem to have been worked out, which is good.
sugarblums.
Where could you buy sugarplums anyway? Or do you have to make them.
ES sugarblums lol

Don’t know if you’re a jewelry person but I came across some gold vintage charms on-line that you’ll get a kick out of…..follow the “click here” linky for an even more amazing version:
http://www.mymotherscharms.com/item_cuffs_a.htm
Hope the linky gods are smiling tonite. :-) / :-(
Well, apparently the answer is :-( but the entire URL is showing on preview so hopefully you can get there with manual typing.
Waccamaw – link works fine.
kinky, erm, i mean linky!
*wheeze*
PB: whom (or where) should interested SD residents contact?
Courage Campaign (http://www.couragecampaign.org/) pretty much has the roundup on everything. Their blogging is perhaps less sophisticated, but they have a complete overview of the events, what’s important, various different petitions, and some coordination with MoveOn.org
if you did an embedded link, that did not work but the full link did.
thanks for thinking of me – bookmarked it and thanks again

Well, wizard! Don’t know whether to spit or laugh ’cause it sure wouldn’t work in preview. If you click back to the full collection, there’s also a revolver, judge’s gravel and a jail. Suz could put together a whole “law and order” bracelet; if you wanted to stretch a point, also an hour glass to mark “time served”. *G*
spew… i’m gonna be sending this to my girls with a *cough cough it IS christmas yanno*
lol, the whole chain gang *g
*mama’s working on her chain gang*
As far as the link working… it’s a known Mac html/FDLPress bug – most of the time the link looks wrong when tried from Preview, but it posts correctly. And once in a while, it posts badly, but I have only seen it a few times.
Is that so when you run firefox on a Mac? I’m a big fan of firefox ’cause it works across platforms and is a bit more virus resistant than IE.
Yeah, I was absolutely flabbergasted and astounded by Bonifligio’s response. Even the most rapacious company would try to sound conciliatory in his position.. even Enron would’ve said “Well, we’ll redouble our efforts to work with the communty and give them what they want” or at least “we’ll try to address their concerns” and do nothing, of course… instead, he just explicitly blew ‘um off and told ‘um he’s gonna go over their heads…. that his prospective neighbors are simply beneath his notice or consideration.
And when you consider that Blackwater paid out hundreds of thousands in handouts (read, bribes) to local residents in the aftermath of the fires, it really says something that they still told him to go packing. Potrero is a desperately poor community with high unemployment, that could’ve really used any jobs Blackwater would’ve provided. Instead, they had the guts and moral conscience to get up and say “No.” I salute them.
I do object to the characterization that San Diego is a very conservative community. If you look at the actual figures for the city itself, it’s no more conservative than the other major California metros. The issue is that there’s an entrenched old boy’s culture of ruling rethugs, and two very conservative suburban belts (the north and to the east). The city itself, and surrounding heavily urbanized areas, is Democratic, and represented by Susan Davis and Bob Filner, both consistently progressive-voting members of our parties (although, like most of our party, they both failed us on the war enabling vote yesterday).
Well, that’s it for me tonight. Good talking with ya, pups!
Suzanne has Late Late Nite upstairs!
Late Late Nite: Stick Magnetic Ribbons on Your SUV
Blub – on “conservative” San Diego — you’re absolutely right. Orange County is more “fairly” characterized as conservative due to very creative gerrymandering, but by and large San Diego is pretty damn liberal.

More than a few times here; seems I’ve tried all variations of posting linkys and most of them have gone belly-up…but, hey, ain’t gonna sit here and whine when it *does* work.

I just ordered a bicycle from the lady who owns the business; it no longer shows up b/c she takes down the photos as they are sold. Kind of her so people won’t drool over what got away. The bike is what is classified as a “mechanical” ie. has one or more moving parts…pedals are supposed to turn as well as the handle bars. Can’t wait ’til it gets here – Christmas present to myself. *g*
come join the party upstairs
